Kindred #1

Rebuilding Hope

Rate this book
Holden Bancroft was born with a better than average brain and not much else. Often described as strange and sickly, his attempts to conform only made him look foolish and a life-long diet of pills hasn’t provided a cure. Deciding to strengthen the only tool in his arsenal was liberating and learning became his greatest joy. But each episode is another reminder that his time is limited, and Holden intends to use everything he’s learned to help the small town of Hope before he dies.

Alpha Crowley Lomond, Zenith of the Americas, isn’t exactly happy with his ascension. Leading isn’t the problem, it’s acting like he’s somehow better than every other shifter that chafes. But while living and working beside them may seem noble, Crowley is more than just an alpha. As Zenith, he’s their example, their teacher and guide, and the one they will turn to when their way of life is threatened.

Meeting changes them in ways they never could have predicted and unveils a web of deceit that began long before they were born. Together, they will have to unravel the lies and reconcile the consequences if they are to protect the shifter way of life. Along the way, Crowley will become the Zenith his Kindred was born to love and their enemies will learn that there's nothing more dangerous than fated mates.

Like many readers, the dream of being a writer has been with me a long time. After three decades of trying, I'd begun to doubt. Thanks to social media, I followed my favorite authors hoping to glean some words of wisdom as I pounded out half-formed ideas with alarming regularity. Two repetitive themes emerged: To be a great writer you must read a lot and your butt must be in the chair every day like it's a job. The more you write, the easier it will be to write and the better you will be at writing. I took that advice to heart and write every day. With three series in the works and counting, it's been amazing to have made this dream my reality.

I am a firm believer in marriage equality, love at first sight, power dynamics and happily ever after. I'm a lover of strong secondary characters and series filled with families, biological or chosen. All are themes you'll find throughout my books.

This was a bit of a mixed bag for me. I did like it...a lot but I didn't quite love it like I wanted to. I think it's really rare to find a good MM true mate story so I was excited for this.

What I did love was the mate aspect. When I read a true mate story, I want them to want to find their other half. None of this denial crap or "you're not what I would have chosen". Here, it was just how I like it. Crowley and Holden have a one night stand and it's the best night either have ever had. Neither can forget the other. Fate has plans and puts them in each other's path again, for good this time.

I loved Crowley and Holden together. I especially liked how Holden would grab Crowley's beard and rub it....so sweet. I think the cover is a good representation of of how I would picture them both.

My discontent comes in the writing. For some reason, at times, I had a hard time following what was happening. (Maybe it was just me and my tired brain) This happened in the very beginning when they meet. It took me a bit to figure out what was present and what was past memories. It also happens later where I just found myself confused. I found myself rereading passages because I felt like something was missing. Overall, I could figure it all out so it wasn't totally a bust.

I will definitely be reading more in the series. While this isn't a cliffy relationship wise, there's an underlying story arc/mystery that will bring more mates together.

There were parts I really loved. I loved the sweetness of the romance, the need to be together. But I couldn't concentrate anymore when the inner dialogue went on and on and on and on. And when shifter politics made an entrance, I was done.

And the beginning was terribly confusing when the MCs meet, we skip to the morning after the sex and then went back to it in a flashback....

Not a bad book, I'm just not in the mood for it right now.

Disclaimer! I haven't read this book but i accidentally gave it one star and I feel bad!! I have no idea how to delete me review lol. On a side note I'm so gutted that this author, who is one of my favourites, has written this book which is in no way related to her sizzling Miami series when I have been waiting "patiently" all year for all of the sequels to my favourite book that I was told by this author would be released this year. In fact I'm sure i was told on Twitter there would be 7 or so books out this year and this is the 1st 😔

3.5 stars. Interesting but ultimately unoriginal take on the shifter trope dynamics. I'm not a huge fan of fated mates and had I read the whole blurb, I might not have picked this one up despite the fact that I do enjoy this author a lot which is I why I went with it in the first place.

So, fated mates aside I was still eventually sucked into this more and more as the story went on even though I was annoyed at a few plot niggles and at how everyone, especially boring Crowley, seemed to make all perfectly healthy, humble and perfectly affirming choices when faced with a dilemma.

This is the start of a new series with at least 4 more books planned according to the author notes. As much as I love this author, sadly, I'm more frustrated about this because I prefer her contemporary stuff and feel like I'm going to have to wait for a very long time before this series is over.

I’ve said before that shifters, paranormal, etc aren’t really my thing, except for certain well-liked/loved authors, where I have to see what they do with a different sub-genre. Jessie is one of those authors and I really did enjoy this overall. I thought the world building was good and liked that it was contained within a real world framework I could relate to. Holden is gathering evidence for what he believes to be government fraud. His intelligence and resourcefulness is trapped in a bureaucracy that won’t take him seriously. Crowley is a shifter but one with mental abilities that elevate him to Zenith of the Americas, with counterparts attending to other parts of the world. Each Zenith has a telepathic empathy with all shifters in their purview and with each other. After an unexpected hookup, they part ways without exchanging more than first names. Crowley soon finds that Holden is a puzzling exception in his world and their meeting exposes a long-standing conspiracy against shifters. The romance seemed kind of backwards since it’s a fated mates thing where they still have to learn everything about each other after they’re already committed. That was an interesting difference for me.

It’s also where I became rather lost, not so much with the events specific to the narrative but with the history and background of the characters, current world status and causes for what was now occurring. First, Crowley and Holden’s “kindred” status which seemed unknown, yet also common knowledge, had me rather baffled. There’s a past war and epidemic that are catalysts for the plot but only get revealed in pieces over the course of narrative and dialogue. My mind was looking for a more neatly defined, chronological recitation of the history of it all. Climactic events and the characters involved added more historical information about Crowley and Zeniths that I just couldn’t quite grasp. I think this is a symptom of why I don’t appreciate paranormal and fantasy stories; my thoughts are too mired in pragmatism and logic to make those imaginative leaps.

I still wanted to see the story to completion and Crowley and Holden solving the mystery of Holden’s “illness” and treatment. Side characters are quite intriguing and more than a few demand their own stories. Jessie’s writing style and skill always pulls me in and keeps me reading no matter a few niggles along the way. I’m quite sure this will hold great appeal for those with more appreciation of this genre.

I have liked or loved every thing I have read by the Author. Now this book has some of my pet peeves as main part of the plot I.e. fated mates. So I was surprised by how much I kept reading and being hooked in the story. I feel in many ways that Holden could represent me. Book smart but not so street smart, a researcher, some one who can read the reports and find things that others wouldn't notice. Loyal, and true. but I definitely have the empathy of Crowley in abundance. I would say the government fraud didn't surprise me, but the elders leading the supression cure did

This was an interesting take on a shifter romance. I'm accustomed to such things as fated mates and alphas, but both those things were taken a step further in this book.

Crowley is not the alpha, he's the Zenith. That means two things – he rules over not just a group of shifters, but all shifters. Of all breeds. There are three Zeniths in the world, ruling over different areas. Crowley rules over the Americas. Below him there are the regular alphas who run the groups on a day-to-day basis. Alphas are the strongest, as per usual. Zeniths are born to the position, not in terms of bloodlines but in terms of abilities. Secondly, Crowley can hear the thoughts and feel the emotions of all the shifters under his rule, and vice versa. That's what makes him the Zenith. How that works in reality (can you say reality when it's a fiction novel?!) wasn't explained in great detail, but the reader was given sufficient information to get the gist of it and understand how it affects Crowley and how he uses it to affect the shifters under his care.

Then you've got mates. Most shifters in this universe choose a mate, as humans do. They may fall in love, but they're not fated. It turns out that Holden is Crowley's fated mate, which for a Zenith is known as a Kindred. No one has encountered a Kindred in so long that they were believed to be myths.

All of the above gave the novel a sense of uniqueness, and made it interesting and different to those that have come before it, which is good.

I found the story hard to follow at first, and I was super confused as to why Crowley asked Holden to join him at his table in the restaurant, although that was sort of explained later. Their first encounter wasn't shared with the reader. From Crowley offering Holden a seat, we skip forward to them in bed together, and that baffled me. Why didn't we get to see their very first interaction with each other?

Once the story got going through, everything flowed quite smoothly after that. I liked the fact that Crowley wasn't arrogant, that he worried over whether he was doing a good job as Zenith, that he genuinely cared for his people, that he respected advice from those whom he trusted and respected, and yet that he was ruthless and hands-on when it came to necessary punishments. In short, a good leader. Holden's bewilderment and bafflement over the whole shifter thing and also his role as Kindred worked well and felt natural, and yet he instinctively reacted to some things, reinforcing the idea that the relationship was 'meant to be'. I thought that was all handled really well.

Some of the secondary characters were quite interesting. The vampire king definitely caught my attention.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 (rounded up to 4 because Goodreads)

Jessie G. has created a fascinating setting. After a war between shifters and humans in the middle of the 20th century, and uneasy peace has been established, but shifters are definitely in the minority. The present-day setting of the story is a nice twist on the reality we know with specific differences due to the world's history that make the reader want to know more. The story unfolds to include a worldwide conspiracy, a prophecy, and hints of great things occurring as each of the three Zeniths find their Kindred, their soul mate.

Let's see, we have:
☑️ Hurt/Comfort
☑️ Fated mates
☑️ "You're actually a shifter!" (oh come on, that can't possibly be a spoiler)

This should have been right up my alley. What happened?

The first problem is pacing. The story starts off quickly, reaches a critical point, and...bogs down in exposition. From there the story lurches along, bouncing jarringly from action to exposition. I get that there is a whole lot of world-building going on here and that a lot of the exposition is necessary, but some of that might have been better shown than told.

The other problem that I had was that while I had a good handle on Holden as a character, his background, and what his motivations might be, Crowley was less clear. We find out more about his background late in the story, but by that point I was frustrated and confused. Finally, a couple of plot points seemed to get muddled and I was left at the end of the book with a lot of unanswered questions unrelated to any promise of sequels.

That all sounds pretty harsh, but probably only because I wanted this book to be better than it was. There's a lot of great stuff here: a fantastic setting, interesting conflicts between shifters and humans (and others!). It just didn't quite come together as well as I'd hoped. Will I pick up the sequel, though? Absolutely. I'm very interested to see what Jessie G. has in store for this world!

This was the most unexpected happy surprise I’ve had in a long time. This is one of those books that you read in one sitting but try to read slowly so you won’t finish so fast because you don’t want it to be over because you’re not ready but you want to finish because you need to know what happens (yep, I know that was a rambling run-on). I would have read this in one sitting but my kid had a game so it took a day and a half to finish.

I am an admitted big fan of this author. We’ve had several…discussions if you will, about several of her books. To say that I shocked both myself and her when I finished the book with only 1 very small technical question might be a bit of an under statement.

I loved this book. I’ve decided I really love the growly possessive type…and Crowley does growly possessive PERFECTLY. He is the most powerful being in the Americas but down to earth and humble. He is thrown for a loop when he discovers fated mates are not myths…and he has one. As much as he’s grappled with his role as Zenith, when the time comes for him to fully embrace it he proves why he is in was chosen for that path.

Holden has been lied to and manipulated his entire life. He is ridiculously smart and when his true colors are able to shine we see his strength as well as a little bit of his sass. I suppose since they are fated mates it goes without saying that they are perfect for each other but here I am saying it any way…they are just made for each other; they complement each others strengths and of course their sexual chemistry is OFF THE CHARTS.

There are so many great characters and of course great dialogue between them all. I can’t wait to read more about them all as well as meet the remaining cast of characters in the rest of the series.

A friend lent me her copy of this one and I thought I would give this author a shot. At first, I wasn’t sure I was going to like this book. There is something a bit off with the author’s writing style and the introduction to this world was a bit clunky. Despite this the more I read the more I found myself interested in the characters and the story. Both Crowley and Holden were wonderful as the MCs. I was invested in what happened to both of them, but Holden particularly resonated with me. I love a character who suffers adversity and comes into his own in the end.

Although there is no cliffhanger and the events of this book resolved itself nicely, the overall story arc is open ended. There are definitely some dangling plot threads at the end of this book. I must say I am looking forward to the next one in the series and will definitely read it when it comes out.

I didn't really connect with any of the characters. There wasn't enough substance for me to invest emotionally in any part of this book. The world building was handled through info dumps rather than story telling, the flashback at the beginning was poorly written and the characters' reactions felt flat. The sex scenes were well written, though, and there weren't editing or grammar issues. I didn't hate it, but I don't feel the desire to read this author's work again either.

Good

There was so much I liked about this book. Crow and Holden are lovely together. I liked the way they came together and how Holdens’s health and identity was affected by their connection. The world was fascinating and shows signs of having great depth. The mysteries added a nice element.
Unfortunately there are some flaws in the construction of the story that stops it from achieving it’s full potential. I think the problem is that there was too much going on at one time. Individual plot points would build momentum but then the ensuing tension would be disrupted by a complete change of scene. By the time the characters returned to the original point, all the tension had dissipated. It was rather frustrating and made it harder to keep track of events and minor characters.
In the great scheme of things, this is not the worst crime ever committed by an author. This is still, after all, an entertaining read. It is however, a great pity because with a bit of style editing, this could be a fantastic series.

So much to say about this book, first I love that Jessie jumped into the "paranormal" genre, after reading Rebuilding Hope I think she has a knack for the growly wolves.
Second, let's talk about Crowley, he is just so yummy, he's protective of his people, understanding and dependable but once he met his mate all bets were off for anyone who f'ed with his man. Wowza, what a protective streak for this alpha, but he goes about protecting Holden in the sweetest ways.
I enjoyed Holden's growth throughout the book and how he acclimated to his new situation.
As much as LOVE Jessie's contemporary books I am really looking forward to the second book in this series, plus I have some serious questions regarding Taro and Bao

It saddens me to say this but this book kind of bored me. Even though they did not know they were Kindred, the romance was too instantaneous (even the sex did not help my feelings :( ). Overall, I have to say the book just did not make me feel, which is what I love about great books... Unfortunately, that did not happen and I was just reading the story just to know what happened and how it got solved. I find out that nothing gets solved here? And you know what? I don't care. It does not bother me that there is no more information and that there isn't an ending... And it's because I'm just not emotionally invested in the book and its characters, so I'm just going to start a new book now and forget all about this one.

The story is interesting, but the storytelling and writing is lacking

It was interesting. But I felt like somebody took a bunch of paragraphs and threw them together chronologically, but without any transition, several paragraphs missing and others with cut endings or beginnings. They are in one place, doing something, then next paragraph they are suddenly in totally different location with no reasoning why they decided to come here, and why specifically now, and when it this now.
The writing style is similarly difficult to follow - some scenes are reasonably clear, some have lots of text and little context, and some are convoluted and difficult to understand what's happening.

A shifter world that’s hot, emotional, and you’ll want more of the story!

Holden isn’t a shifter although he wished he was because he’s suffered pain and worse for all of his young life. He’s brilliant and totally dedicated to doing his job to his utmost ability. On his way down to Florida he runs into Crowley at a truck stop and oh my It gets HOT and sweet! Crowley actually is the Zenith over all shifters and vampires in the Americas.

This is a fascinating shifter story and I can’t wait for the next book! Jessie G Is a favorite author of mine and this is a departure for her, into fantasy and the world of shifters, which she does extremely well!

Was a surprising good read

I usually don't give reviews which is bad because I am an avid reader and I figured I needed to start. I read reviews to help me determine if I'm going to purchase a book and though there were a couple bad reviews I'm glad I did.

The first chapter was like paragraphs were left out, but it was only that portion and did not take away from the overall plot and characters.

I thought it was well written and though it was wordy in relation to the emotions of the characters it really helped you understand them better.

To me other than that first part of the book it was written seamlessly and well.

Enjoyable, but kinda slowish?

I loved the characters. I loved the writing style. I loved the story. Honestly I loved nearly everything about this book except how hard it was to get to the end. I almost gave up on it a few times (very glad I didnt) and it was an effort to push through though looking back after reading it to the end I can't remember why. I really loved the story and i think it was a great setup for the series just... Some places dragged. Like bad. All in all though I loved it and want more of the story. I really want to know which Zenith gets his Kindred next!

Amazing!!

This was my first time reading a story by
Jessie G. I'll just say I'm so glad I found this book! The world that was created and the characters..I laughed, I cried, and I raged right there with the characters. This is an amazing book and I highly recommend that you don't plan on putting it down once you pick it up!! Looking forward to the next book in this exciting new series!!!

Man I struggled to get through this one

There was a lot of telling. What I mean is, you're reading, maybe a couple of pages in, you realize you are being told what happened, in a rushed kind of way, lacking details. The way time moves in the book also threw me off a little, all of a sudden months have passed. I didn't actually feel a connection between the characters either. I suppose this author's writing style is not for me.

Outstanding

I have always been a Jesse G fan, having read all her books. I was impressed with all, some more than others, but I was thrilled to find this book. I love reading about the paranormal and shifters are the absolute best. Love the ideal and in my fantasy wish they were real.

Must read

I was hooked from the beginning! Really good book, sooooooo glad it's going to be a series. I love the characters and can't wait to see how this all evolves. It's a different take on shifters, vampires, etc than I've read before. Its refreshing! I can't wait for the next book to come out.

Shifter m/m love story

Brilliant idealist who didn't know he was suppressed cougar shifter instead of sickly human
meets ( superalpha) zenith wolf shifter and falls in love.
Good characterization but too much explicit sex. Best friend very likeable character.
