A deranged, vicious psychopath has gone on a child-killing spree in London. MI5 thinks the killer might be connected to the secret Nabatean society. They call in the world’s expert on the Nabateans, Carter Devereux.
While Carter is in London, working with MI5 and the police, his children are on holiday with their grandparents in Greece and they get abducted. It soon becomes clear that the London psychopath has moved his base of operations.
Carter calls in help from his friends at Executive Advantage, a group of Special Forces experts, to help him find and rescue his children.
Racing against time, there’s nothing that Carter Devereux and his Special Forces friends won’t do to save his children. But Carter and his friends are about to learn that the labyrinth is not just a maze, but also a deadly threat.
THE LABYRINTH OF MINOS is a full-length novel, a nail-biting suspense-thriller the fifth book in the Carter Devereux series, the sequel to The Nabatean Secret.
This was a really enjoyable action packed story with plenty of suspense and good characters. With Carter Devereaux and his special forces team having to find his kids after they are kidnapped its a race against time. Along with the labyrinth which is more than a maze, this book will keep you turning the pages till the end.
This is the first book of the Carter Devereux Mystery Thriller series that I have come across, but is actually the fifth book in this series. The main characters are a married couple, Carter and McKenzie and their children Liam and Beth. They live and work in French Quebe, Canada, in a small community based on old family land. The community is made up of other people who are working with them on the translation of the Library of the Giants and also further work on the secret Nabateans society and the knowledge to be gained from them. Carter is an archaeologist and McKenzie is a scientist, they both work with a secret organisation in the US, while living in Canada.
The story starts with a man who is a serial killer, hunting down his next prey, a young girl, in an isolated and rundown part of London. After doing many foul acts against the child, he dumps the body at an archaeological site and travels to Crete, where he is looking for evidence of the legend of the Minotaur. He wants to be made famous with his discovery, like one of his heroes Carter Devereux.
One of Carter and McKenzie’s projects has involved translating the language of dolphins into a translation programme. They have discovered how intelligent the dolphin race are and have made firm friends amongst their group, similar to McKenzie’s link with their wolves at home. This link will prove crucial in the days to come. Carter is called to London to help with the hunt for the killer, whilst McKenzie starts to set up her new lab and employ fellow scientists.
Their children and grandparents go on holiday to Athens, with a friend and ex-Seal Dylan to help look after them and keep them safe. Carter is then called to Crete when the mother dolphin, Merryweather, reports her daughter, Carmen, is missing and possibly kidnapped. Carter takes Dylan with him, leaving his children unprotected and something terrible happens to them as well, as they are kidnapped by a psychopath!
Carter and his wife end up joining together with separate teams of agents to save the dolphin and their daughter. The only thing the psychopath wants is the location of the Minotaur, so he can use the DNA to make a clone and prove his research on Knossos. This psycho has unusual strengths that the team don’t understand, but McKenzie’s research project is needed to help them reach the location he has hidden the dolphin and children in underwater caves.
A great story of adventure, ancient history, scientific discoveries and a thrill of a read. It reminds me a lot of the Peacetaker series of books by Edita A. Petrick, where a husband and wife team hunt down ancient artefacts that are being sought by others for evil purpose. There is plenty of surprises and a good few twists, which made it a great read and it kept my interest the whole way though. The main characters are likeable and the whole family and friends community sounds like a lovely place to live.
I wish I had read a few more of the books in this series. I have read some of the author’s books in their Rex Dalton thriller series, but hadn’t had a chance to expand into their other series’. I will look forward to starting back at the beginning of the Devereux storyline. I received an ARC copy of this book from Hidden Gems and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
I had an ARC of this from the author and, being a great fan of his previous books, was excited to be able to read this but due to other commitments was delayed in being able to do so. I wasn't disappointed... the action is fast paced, the science fascinating and thought-provoking: could we do this, what are the ethics of doing this, what if we don't do this? The story is mostly set on and around Crete in the Mediterranean Sea and centres on "a very bad man" who threatens the future of the Devereaux's family. Lots of questions need to be answered: did the Minotaur of myth really exist? Do they still exist? How could they have existed at all? What about the dolphins and their ability to communicate? What about those wolves doing the same? So many questions... I hope the next book continues to explore the latter two themes as well. This is a real page-turner of a book, I was desperate to know the outcome - read it, I'm sure you'll enjoy it too!
The Labyrinth of Minos by author JC Ryan is more than a thriller! An action packed mystery full of surprises with a well thought out plot full of suspense. Complex characters make this a fantastic read. The story line is full of opportunities, the reader has to wonder if there isn’t a little bit of truth in this work of fiction. Even though this is the latest book of a series, JC Ryan gives you enough back story to not feel lost. A great read for those that love thrilling suspense with just a touch of drama. As an ARC reader, I am giving this fair and unbiased review in exchange for the honor of reading this book prior to release. Final word – you can’t go wrong by reading this awesome book.
As well written as the 1st 4 books, but very tense and even disturbing in parts.
The book is really ever well written, but the subject matter can really get to you. Is Ahab such a cruel psycho path because he was experimented on and no one cared about him or did the experimentation cause him to be this way. Carter and Mackenzie continue to make really exciting and beneficial breakthroughs mankind along with the good uses for such things there are always wants to use it for evil. Enjoyed the book as much as the other four even though it was hard to get through the torture and murder of innocent children bad the kidnapping of th e dolphin and the Devereaux children.
I am so excited! I just finished J.C. Ryan's The Labyrinth of Minos (Carter Devereux #5). This was my first book by J.C. Ryan and I am thrilled. This book has just about everything I love in a book - great writing, interesting characters, a really bad villain, edge of your seat techno thriller, an archeological theme, and conversing with dolphins and wolves! Most of the action takes place in Crete, actually offshore and under Crete. I am ecstatic that Ryan has written a number of books which I will be diving into shortly. I was given a copy of this book and am enthusiastically voluntarily posting my review.
A CAN'T PUT DOWN, UNTIL THE VERY END!! Carter and Mackenzie make a device to be able to talk with the Dolphins! They find out, that one of the Dolpin family they connected with has been kidnapped and being held in the Labyrinth on Crete. There's a serial killer on the loose, and kidnaps Liam and Beth! They are being held in the Labyrinth also. Carter and Sean are injected with the Respirocyte Generators, to enable them to swim thru the Labyrinth to save the Dolphin and the Devereux children. Will they also find the fabled Minotaur??? You will have to read to find out....LOL.
My favorite Carter Devereux book so far, I received this book as an ARC and am so glad I didn't have to wait for it to be released. I love how well developed these characters are becoming and the growth the author is giving them. This installment in the series is a very quick paced, hard to put down read. I was able to predict the kidnapping of the children, but the reaction of the adults to the event and resolution of it were so well written the book grabs the reader won't let go until the end.
I must've been living in a cave because this is the first story I've read in this series, though not for long. I will catch up on this series. I've read other books by this author and love all he has written so far. This is dark but extremely engrossing. I am intrigued by what brought the story thus far. If the first 4 are as good as this one, I'm in for a lot of enjoyable reading.
I received this book from AuthorsXP and am voluntarily providing an honest review.
I enjoy continuing series with great characters. This is an enduring series with very good characters and an ever growing cast of new ones in each novel. I hope you never run out of scenarios to put the cast through. Maybe even to begin more adventures for the upcoming generation (the children, the animals)
Greater than their knowing. Misquotation from Kipling, but it applies to the work of the Devereux family--and, for that matter to the writing of JC Ryan, who deserves to be on everyone's best seller list. Labyrinth is the kind of novel you expect from Ryan. High adventure combined with science fiction set in the past and in the future.
I didn't finish the book, by chapter 4 there still was not a storyline and I lost interest. Didn't care about back ground story of characters , I wanted the story to move on with plot, her disappointed
Carter Devereux and his wife Mackenzie are probably one of the best characters I have read for a while. And the story is truly intriguing, filled with a mix of facts and myth that I find very enticing myself.
A great read, one that I don't hesitate to recommend.
I didn’t fill any thing from the last novel in the series but a quick finish to a great a series with a C+ quality in story originality for the Minotaur legend.
I have greatly enjoyed this series so much. The ideas presented give you great pause for meditation and contemplation. I so wish could have a cup of coffee with the author. Read it!!!!
There IS a Book 5 & it is the final-final of the series.
Yes Virginia, Book 5 is the end. I thoroughly enjoyed this Carter Devereux Series. This last book was about about the respirocites, and another surprising adventure. Entertaining.
