Two forest friends approach Winter with seemingly different concerns in this charming picture-book from Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell, the author/illustrator team who also produced the middle-grade fantasy series, The Edge Chronicles. Rabbit, dreading the lonely days ahead, when Hedgehog is in hibernation, seeks reassurance; while Hedgehog, keenly conscious that he is missing out on an important season, has a favor to ask. In their different ways, they both want to be remembered...

The first of several books to feature this "odd couple" - subsequent titles include The Birthday Presents , Rabbit's Wish and What Do You Remember? - A Little Bit of Winter is an endearing and humorous tale of friendship. From the opening page - Winter was coming. "I'll miss you," said Rabbit. "Will you miss me?" "No," said Hedgehog. "I'll miss you," said Rabbit. "I know," said Hedgehog, "You just told me." - to the closing passage ("Did you miss me...?"), I found myself chuckling at the two friends' interaction! The accompanying illustrations by Chris Riddell, whose artwork somehow always manages to be both cute and vaguely disquieting, were delightful. All in all, a book that young readers with a taste for animal tales will relish, and Chris Riddell and Paul Stewart fans will appreciate.

I wasn't sure how to rate this but, having read it a few days ago and just bringing it out of my library bag to write a review, I felt touched at seeing the cover illustrations again so I guess that bumps this up to five stars. It's a very sweet story of friendship. Hedgehog hibernates for the winter and his friend Rabbit is going to miss him all that time. Hedgehog won't miss Rabbit, though, because he won't think of anything while he is sleeping. But, he wants Rabbit to save a little bit of winter for him so he can experience it, too. This gives poor Rabbit something to do and a way to remember his friend in a proactive way while the cold snow blankets the earth. But how will Rabbit save a little bit of winter? Find out! :-)

Thanks to my friend Abigail for alerting me to Chris Riddell's marvelous illustrations. I have a soft spot for hedgehogs so this was a perfect introduction to his work for me!

A cute, simple, story about a hedgehog and a rabbit. The hedgehog must hibernate for winter and wants the rabbit to "save him a little bit of winter" for when he wakes up.

So, what exactly is winter? How will Rabbit save some? And will Rabbit even remember?

Accompanied by adorable illustrations, this is a cute story about what winter is like, and also how special friends are.

“A Little Bit of Winter” written by Paul Stewart and illustrated by Chris Riddell (Copyright 1999, Harper Collins Publishers) is a story about two friends, Rabbit and Hedgehog, who are about to be separated for the winter. Rabbit will miss his friend, who doesn’t even know what winter feels like because he spends every winter sleeping. Hedgehog scratches a reminder into the bark of a tree asking Rabbit to save “a little bit of winter” to share with him when he wakes up. After a heavy snowfall, Rabbit leaves his warm burrow to look for food. Seeing Hedgehog’s reminder on the tree, he rolls a snowball, wrapping it in leaves “to keep the cold in” before taking it underground. When spring arrives and the two friends meet again, Rabbit unwraps the snowball, giving it to Hedgehog, who finally gets to experience the “hard, white, and cold” of winter as he holds “a little bit of winter” in his paws. The sweet illustrations are a joy from start to finish as Hedgehog receives two gifts from his friend, the coldness of winter snow and the warmth of an enduring friendship. Hedgehog hibernates in the winter and so has never experienced it like Rabbit has. He requests that Rabbit save a piece of winter for him, so when he wakes up he can know what it feels like. But Rabbit is very forgetful, so Hedgehog writes a reminder on the bark of Rabbit’s tree.

Throughout winter Rabbit bemoans how everything there is to eat is brown including—oops!—a piece of the note Hedgehog left that said what to save! But Rabbit remembers and thoughtfully stores a snowball packed in leaves for Hedgehog to experience when he awakens in spring.

All that’s left of the snowball is a very small portion by the time Hedgehog comes out of hibernation, but it does the trick. He is grateful that Rabbit remembered and Rabbit is grateful that Hedgehog left the note and that he done hibernating.

I really loved that Hedgehog didn’t just bemoan the fact that Rabbit is forgetful, but accommodated that quirk by leaving a note. And Rabbit works very hard to remember when he eats the important part of the note. When he remembers he takes great pains to store some winter for his friend, and Hedgehog is very grateful.

This is a quaint children's story which we picked up at a charity shop due to the hedgehog theme and the illustrations by Chris Riddell. The artwork is beautiful, as you'd expect. The story is about hedgehog hibernating for winter but asking rabbit to save some winter for him so he can experience it for himself. Rabbit is forgetful; will he remember to do what hedgehog asked?

A lovely little story of friendship.

In this book children learn of the concept of hibernation alongside recognition of seasons and the changes which happen throughout. Whilst Hedgehog sleeps he asks his friend rabbit to save him a 'little bit of winter'. Forgetful rabbit must find a way to preserve such an abstract concept for his friend when he reawakens in spring.

Wow! Such an awesomely illustrated story of the friendship between Bunny and Hedgehog. As Hedgehog is preparing for hibernation, he asks his friend Bunny to save a bit of Winter for him so he can finally find out what Winter is really like. I definitely recommend this book to kids of all ages especially during the time when Autumn turns to Winter.

Urocza, czarująca opowieść o przyjaźni i o tęsknocie.
POLECAM

My granddaughter is so lucky her grandmother loves books. She is getting this one for Christmas. This story is about two friends, their friendship and the changing of the seasons. Brown coloring dominates but spring spurts forth to friendship and the gift of remembrance.

Cute pair of friends. The rabbit has to learn how to pass the winter without the hedgehog, but manages somehow to save a bit of winter for when his friend wakes up from hibernation.

A fun story about friendship and wintertime. Knocked a star off because winter sort of got a bad rep in this story. It’s not all hard and cold.

This book is so sweet and the kids learn a little about what hibernation is with this factionary tale. We loved the illustrations in this book in that they are colorful and really remind us what winter feels like. I loved that Rabbit is forgetful so his friend writes him a letter to explain what he wishes for. It's a nice way to start our cold spell. The kids really liked this book in it's simple yet beautiful storyline. I recommend checking out this book.

Theme: Winter Stories
A Little Bit of Winter is a great storytime read aloud about friendship and winter.
Hedgehog and Rabbit are best friends. Rabbit misses Hedgehog during the winter when he's hibernating and Hedgehog misses getting to see winter. When Rabbit saves a bit of winter for Hedgehog (a snowball wrapped in leaves), Hedgehog eagerly unwraps his present. He grasps it in his hands, and cries, "Ouch, it bit me!" Rabbit replies, "That is what winter feels like." I agree, winter bites!

This is a story about a hedgehog and a rabbit. Winter is approaching and the hedgehog is going to go into hibernation. The hedgehog asks the rabbit to save him a little piece of winter for when he wakes up. He writes the message in the bark of the tree so the rabbit won't forget. The hedgehog goes into hibernation and the rabbit goes about it's days in the snow. The rabbit did everything it could to save some snow for the hedgehog until spring came and he woke up again. Spring came and the two were reunited.
This is a great story about friendship. It is also a great way to teach kids about hibernation. It's a good way to talk about what kinds of animals hibernate and why. It also has a good message about keeping your promises to your friends which the kids can relate to. This book gives a good opportunity to also talk about seasons and how the weather changes. This is a very simple story that can teach children so much. It was always one of my favorites as a kid. The illustrations go along with what the text is saying. The illustrations are colorful and they are realistic. I think kids should read this book.

A Little Bit of Winter is a cute little tale about a rabbit and a hedgehog who have to separate for winter.

I like this, but I don't think it will pass as a great read aloud. I'm going to try it this year in my Animals in Winter later this month and we'll see how it plays.

The relationship between the two characters in this story is just so fun. There's an understanding of each other that is more nuanced than you generally find in a children's picture book. It might be fun to pair this with Ezra Jack Keats' Snow Day since they both involve preserving a snowball.

The book held the attention of a room full of 3-4 year olds.

What does winter feel like? smell like? look like? Try explaining this to someone who SLEEPS through every winter. Rabbit is stumped by this request from his Hedgehog friend -- to save a bit of winter.

Our story performers used puppets to tell this story.
