There are many words in these poems of mine, but I have one message and it's quite simple.
I ask that you have a conversation with your heart and tell it from now on its only job is to love.
Love recklessly. Love inexplicably. Love boundlessly.
In her debut book, Mia Laurén Herrera unravels her mind through poetry. Using her gift of language, she paints poems about love, the fading of culture and the heartbreak that tends to come with life. A ruthlessly honest read, this collection of poetry will take your breath away.
For a 17 year old, these poems are very nuanced and mature. There are a few that are a gut punch. There's a few common themes about living between two worlds, and learning to love and accept herself. And then there's the heartbreaking theme of living in the time of school shootings. There's love, hope, and heartbreak here. All very well done.
I think Herrera will be a poet to watch. As she grows and learns, I suspect her words will have a bit more polish and economy that will really make her poetry shine.
