Going to be honest, the whole ecchi misunderstandings are just too overboard. It was funny at first, but quickly wore out their welcome. It needed better pacing between them, and at times felt nonstop. Might continue if I find a sale of future volumes.

Pretty decent little manga. I was a little surprised since I thought from the cover and title it'd be less intense and more all-ages (I was thinking maybe 4 Koma). Like, maybe it'd be about someone who can't figure out how to study, and someone helps her. But no, it's about a girl that would like to study, but a boy in her class showing an interest in her is making her distracted, and she just wants to crush his dreams and get back to learning.
On the subject of age appropriateness, this is definitely a bit more mature. Ao's father is that "perverted Manga author" stereotype, always pushing advice to her about boys based on his smutty literature. He even named her Ao for the color of the sky when he made love to her mom... A fact that a young Ao didn't fully comprehend and blurted out in front of other parents on the "Parent's Day" event at her school in Kindergarten. Besides the old man and his scheming, Ao herself is having a hard time avoiding fantasizing about the boy from her class that likes her, much to her chagrin since she'd rather be studying.
The romance moves pretty well for a volume 1. I wonder how long they can keep this up though. They introduce a rival fairly early too, and I thought it'd be a misunderstanding thing ("he's my brother" moment or something), but nope, a former school friend of Ao is really trying to steal away the man that likes her. So despite being a comedy, it's not 100% feel good. I like some drama, so I'm ok with that development. Very interested to continue this one.

This was a fun and surprisingly relatable read!
Ao-chan Can't Study!, Vol. 1 introduces us to Ao Horie, a brilliant high school student with a single mission: get into a top university far away from her family. Her main motivation? The deep-seated embarrassment she feels for her father, who happens to be a wildly successful erotic novelist. Growing up, all she's ever known is her dad's inappropriate behavior and his lewd writing, which has convinced her that all boys are solely driven by lust.
But then, her carefully laid plans are thrown into chaos when a popular and seemingly "normal" classmate, Takumi Kijima, confesses his love for her. As she starts to develop feelings for him, the dirty thoughts and perverted misunderstandings that have built up in her head thanks to her dad's work begin to mess with everything.
I'll admit, there are so many hilarious scenes, mostly revolving around these misunderstandings. It's incredibly funny how her mind goes to the dirtiest, most messed-up conclusions over something so simple and innocent. The comedic disconnect between her filthy inner monologue and Kijima's wholesome reality is the heart of the story.
The father is definitely over the top and a little odd at times, I didn't love the part where he tries to get his daughter half-naked to make the boy fall for her, but he's generally harmless and more of a goofy idiot. Ao herself is pretty oblivious for being so smart, but that just adds to the charm.
This isn't a high-brow read, but if you're looking for a silly, sometimes sexy, and goofy romantic comedy with a mature tagline, you'll love it. A solid 3 out of 5!

This was an OK read and even cute in places but for me, it talked about sex too much and that took me away from the characters.

A fair warning this manga is on the slightly mature side.
The manga reads as a continuous story; no time skips or separated stories. Each chapter is a continuation of the next. The manga itself uses a newer art style and the lines are very neat so I think it’s digitally drawn but I could be wrong there. There aren’t many panels with a full drawn background. We only see them when the scenery or story’s setting has changed. The manga focuses on the character’s expressions, interactions and sound effects.
Our main character Ao Horie, keeps men at arm’s length since she holds a strong view about them being perverted. That’s mainly in thanks to her father, who is a bestselling erotica author and often times can be seen recommending Ao erotic novels to read. Ao doesn’t seem to have many girl friends either as she doesn’t talk with any. I believe that’s because she focuses on studying due to being singled out since childhood. Her “feelings” for Kijima grow a bit too exponentially in the story for me but I’m hoping there’s a backstory or reasoning somewhere. Anyways, given Ao doesn’t seem to have any social interactions, I can give her the benefit of doubt for falling in love quickly.
Kijima or the “King Normie” has feelings for Ao. He seems pretty sincere even though Ao tends to run away and sometimes acts rude or weird. We don’t get much about him honestly and I hope we can see more of his character in the next volume.
Ao’s father, is a really short person. At most times his advice and instinct is correct however he messes it up with his antics. He’s a fun character and the main reason we have this story as it is now. Miyabi Takaoka is another character who has an important role in this volume. Personally, I don’t like her since I dislike individuals who try to sow discord between others by using fake methods like photo editing.
This manga is a romantic comedy so it’s enjoyable and quick to read. We ended on a building misunderstanding so it’ll be interesting to see how or if it gets cleared up in the next volume. If you’re looking for something to lighten up your moon, I definitely recommend this manga.

They grow up so fast
Honestly after reading this book I feel more sorry for Ao (which I guess is the noun of blue rather than the adjective which would be Aoi from what I hear) then I find the story amusing. That said it is not a bad story per say but with a very open father known for his pornographic works of literature raising the poor girl it is understandable why she desperately tries to be completely serious as she tries to reach her life goals. Sadly teenage hormones are a powerful force of nature and with an advanced knowledge of sexuality mixed with a bit of naiveite it isn't long before she finds herself falling for a classmate and doing her best not to fall off her studious course as she also finds herself thinking about him a lot. Throw in a childhood rival and of course the incredibly unhelpful father figure and it is all a girl can do to stay sane.
There is another manga series about a father that works on adult content called Kakushigoto: My Dad's Secret Ambition which this book reminded me of but while the father in that story is trying to protect his daughter there is a scene in this one where Ao introduces herself to the class as A like Apples and O like Orgy which made me cringe a bit because she was obviously very young when she said that. As such seeing her father later in the book didn't improve my interest but if you can overlook the perverted one this is not a bad series though some people may be offended by references to sexual content that occurs now and then.

I guess one shouldn't judge a book by its cover, quite literally. I for once thought it was going to be way more ecchi, but it's more of an almost SFW-ish rom-com between Ao and Kijima. Their "relationship" or the development of it is hindered by misunderstandings and a third and forth party (if you count the dad).
Ao certainly has potential as a main character and Kijima is a nice potential boyfriend. The third party is hard to judge, but I guess we'll learn more about her and her motives in volume 2.
It's a first volume and those always get a little bonus, so this is a 4/5 based on the possibilities.

I was recommended this manga and, admittedly, very hesitant to read it. However, after constant baggering to "Get on it already!" (Thank you, Jenny), I decided to give it a go and maintain an open-mind. Surprisingly, this manga did not uphold to any of the worries I had going into it, and was actually quite a funny and entertaining read. That being said, many of the comments and jokes in this manga were pretty raunchy, but overall not too bad. In short, I will be continuing with the series, mostly for the cute and light-hearted romance between the main protagonists.

It should have been amusing, but Ao started annoying TF out of me very early on. She was a little too stupid with the misunderstandings and weird reactions to sex. Her dad is reminiscent of Happosai from Ranma 1/2, and a little of him goes a loooong way. There was also the love rival that popped out of nowhere and started being a PITA, leading to a sudden cold shoulder(that actually didn’t make sense - their conversation didn’t seem like it should have taken the turn it did). I might read the next volume to get past the cliffhanger, but honestly I would not recommend.

The entire bit of this manga from the first volume is quiet girl that says she just "wants to study" is actually thinking lewd thoughts while guy hitting on her is thinking wholesome. I think it was supposed to be funny but for me at least it was more annoying than anything especially as it went on. The dad character is also just the worst. The entire bit of trying to get his daughter interested in sex or trying to teach her about it so forcibly is just weird and not funny. Won't be continuing, not for me.

Anywho, I like the story so far, & it seems that little-miss-sleeparound is determined to prevent Ao from being happy. On to the next volume. Art, a little naughty, yet well done. Dialogue, a little perverse, but decent. Characters, believable, likeable, relatable.

It’s my first manga read and boy was I in for a shock. The plot is cliche, though that shouldn’t count too much against it. I enjoy the main character (AO) aspect of her being a devout student. Although as the title suggests, she isn’t doing too much studying these days! The story stops at a climatic moment where you need to read Vol. 2 to find out what happens.
As for the art, it’s standard for comics. And don’t forget it reads left to right.

Too many misunderstandings that could have easily been solved if our MC wasn't so dumb. The dad was annoying me for most (who the heck strips his daughter in front of a boy). The love rival can just go and *insert something bad*. But the art was OK. And at times it did make me laugh how far the MC's imagination went.

Not my cup of tea. The dad seems to be a fun and silly character like the mayor from power puff girls but everyone else is kind of dull. Silly misunderstandings and lack of good comme cause relationship issues. It's a trope seen in so many other stories it's not interesting.

June 17, 2023I was not getting what I was expecting. I thought this would be kind of a four panel gag manga. Well I got instead is romantic comedy based off sexual misunderstandings, and while this isn’t bad, the humor isn’t my cup of tea so I quit after the first two chapters I guess I do like that it’s the female lead that’s the Overthinker and over analyzing every situation because usually in other anime comedies like this, it’s usually a guy so that’s a nice change

This manga is pretty raunchy, so I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did. The misunderstandings were funny (and surprisingly not annoying). But I think everyone can agree that Ao's father is terrible.
