Yuki Midorikawa (緑川ゆき, Midorikawa Yuki) is a Japanese mangaka (manga artist). Midorikawa is best known for drawing the manga series Natsume Yujin-cho ("Natsume's Book of Friends").
Yuki Midorikawa started writing manga when she was an elementary school girl. When she was a junior high school student, she sent her manga for the first time to "Hana to Yume", a semi-monthly Japanese shōjo manga magazine published by Hakusensha. Since then, she had kept drawing manga to become a mangaka.
Holy shit, this was a ton of fun! I loved loved LOVED the detective chapter, ESPECIALLY the yokai eyes in the background! Nyanko sensei's eyes made an appearance TWICE! Yeeeee, it was so awesome!
Misuzu's chapter was awesome for many reasons, but the one that stuck out to me was when Misuzu brings up his and Natsume's "contract". Misuzu tries to goad Natsume into using the Book of Friends, but Natsume stands his ground, admitting that if he did, something would be lost between them. What I love about this is that Misuzu is not against Natsume using his name, and Natsume has used it before, but that was more so for manual labor. In this instance, Natsume would be using to force Misuzu to confess, but he doesn't want to because Natsume believes it would be a violation of trust despite Misuzu not seeing it that way. It's a small detail, but I love it because it shows how much Natsume values his connections with the other yokai and doesn't want to violate it even when said yokai don't mind.
Finally, the last chapter was so sweet and wonderful. I wish I could have had dreams like those! And seeing Natsume interact with origami's true form was so sweet, I nearly cried (not that THAT'S new with this series...).
No clue when the next volume will be out, but you bet I'm pre-ordering that sucker as soon as I can!
This is my favorite manga series, hands down. I loved everything about this volume--Tanuma and Taki each having their own adventures, and the way that Natsume is starting to open up and learn about relationships and what's supposed to happen in healthy ones. The last story was such a perfect Natsume story in every way, and the funny interlude literally made me laugh out loud. These books are my comfort reads and I adore them.
Loved being introduced to Takis brother and seeing Misuzu's human form. Last chapter was so simple yet almost made me tear up. Natsume is too nice and precious. He's so kind to this origami piece he found on the ground who is a yokai he can't hear a single word from or see it make any movements. I wish we saw more of the yokai in its true form. Seeing a kind-hearted yokai who is not comfortable with their terrifying looking appearance hit me in the guts.
Wonderful continuation of Natsume's Alice of Life stories mixed with the mystic Home I and other worldly adventures. Natsume is becoming more confident with each volume. He definitely values his friends and is very protective of them. I enjoy reading Natsume's stories!
As usual, Midorikawa sensei made me cry; the story of Taki and her brother was beautiful and endearing. THe story with just Tanuma and Natsume was everything I'd want in a uch a tale, sweet, mysterious, vaguely dangerous but ultimately bittersweet. And the last story was poignant, reminding us that sometimes it's the small moments that make life worthwhile.
It’s been so long since I read the previous volume, and this series desperately needs a character/story index (what are those called?) at the beginning of the volumes. So many background characters at this point, and I get them mixed up so easily.
Still an easy, sweet series. The emotions feel a bit distant from the reader, but in a way that keeps things more light while reading it.
The last chapter in this volume really hit home with me in a pleasant way. I enjoyed Natsumi’s quiet introspection and love that he is continuing to connect with yokai in a more meaningful way. Can’t wait to read the next one!
Everything I love about this series, all in one volume. Creepiness, Natsume struggling to improve his relationships with others, fantastic art, bittersweet resolutions. Even a funny bonus chapter! This series just makes me so happy, every time I get my hands on a new volume.
4.25 stars. This was my favorite volume of Natsume in a good while. The stories about Taki and Tanuma were good, but it's particularly the last one that got me. It was wistful and kind and a perfect example of why this series is so good when it hits
This was a lovely volume! I loved seeing Misuzu again (in his "human" form this time) and the last chapter (#99), was beautiful! Truly a Natsume-story.
The only problem with this Manga that it finishes real quick... I truly enjoy the moments when u read this manga, so relaxing, and usually you read it with a smile
Got my volumes mixed up oops. I forget what happened in this one specifically.
Natsume’s Book of Friends Review
5/5 stars
I ended up down this rabbit hole of trying to find cozy/supernatural stories about yokai, partially because I’d just read Kusunoki’s Garden of Gods, and partially because I watched the movie Mononoke: Phantom in the Rain and was craving literally anything in the same vein.
So of course I ended up reading Natsume’s Book of Friends. This is the quintessential yokai manga. It’s about a teenage boy who can see yokai, which gets him into a lot of situations. Have you ever seen that thing on the internet where people are like, let’s put that character through situations? That’s Natsume. But it’s also sort of cozy, despite being all about ghosts. Not sure how that’s achieved, but it works.
Natsume ends up with this yokai trapped in a lucky cat shrine statue as his bodyguard. His name is Nyanko Sensei and I love him so much. He’s both the most helpful cat around, and also a pain in the butt. He sticks around Natsume mostly because Natsume promises to give him his grandmother’s book if anything were to happen to him.
Natsume’s grandmother’s book is a notebook filled with names of tons of yokai who she tricked into writing their names in the book. All of the yokai in her book have to do the bidding of whoever is holding the book, so all the yokai in the book either want their name released, or want to own the book themselves. Natsume is determined to return all their names, that way he doesn’t have the burden of constantly being attacked by yokai who want the book for themselves, and he doesn’t have to fear someone else getting their hands on it and controlling so many powerful yokai.
It’s a relatively episodic series where in each new chapter, Natsume comes face to face with a new yokai, which may or may not be in the book. There are a lot of fun returning characters who Natsume hangs out with, very little of whom know anything about the book, if they even know he can see yokai.
My favorite is the guy with the weird lizard tattoo. I am very curious to see if in the future we end up getting any clues as to what sort of yokai caused it, and if it can be removed, but I’m also scared that finding out that information would make that character suddenly less mysterious. I also hope this series never ends. It’s very fun, and has been going on for so long that I hope I’ll be able to keep reading it for a very long time.
This will be a spoiler free review. Onto the review!
Taki is troubled by the return of her older brother. Isamu is just a little awkward around Taki and Natsume helps bring them closer. Tanuma gets sick and Natsume is there for him as well as Nyanko.
