Recently a friend asked me why I write Westerns.

The simple answer is that I love Westerns. I love the history of the 19th Century, and I love the themes of classic Westerns. I write Westerns because I am a fan of Westerns.

But I think there is a deeper reason why I enjoy Westerns, and I’d love to explain it to you.

I am drawn to Westerns because it is the only genre that embodies the ideals that I consider to be truly American: Ideals of freedom, of rugged individualism, and of independence of spirit.

The heroes of Westerns are men and women who understand that justice and the law are sometimes two different things. They are people who make their own way by their own means, they are prideful and stand by what they say.

Readers of Westerns, I think, typically hold dear those same values.

They are “my people,” and I consider it a privilege to write stories for them.

No time or place better exemplifies these ideals than the American West of the 19th and early 20th Centuries. This is why I love reading Westerns, and this is why I love writing Westerns.

When I write Western novels, I’m very aware that these principles are not simply tropes in a genre but dearly held beliefs of a certain caliber of people, Americans generally, Westerners specifically, and me individually.

I strive for historical accuracy in a created world. Typically, my stories start with inspiration from actual events. I read old newspapers and non-fiction, and when I find a true story that moves my imagination, that’s where creation often begins.

Even as a young child I was drawn to Westerns. In preschool I wore a Lone Ranger costume to school every day, and I would only respond if people addressed me as “The Lone Ranger.” Kids in my class told their parents they went to school with the Lone Ranger.

I like to think there’s a bit of that kid still with me.

To be sure, the Old West is part myth and legend, and often my characters are larger than life. Their aim is truer, their horses are faster; the men are tougher, the women are prettier, and the outlaws are meaner. Even so, in my novels a six-shooter only has six rounds (and sometimes just five), and I try to avoid miraculous feats of travel.

Tougher, prettier, and meaner though they are, my characters also tend to be flawed. I want them to be as real as they can get.

But the Old West is not all legend. Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, Dangerous Dan Tucker, Charley Parkhurst, Seth Bullock, Billy the Kid, Jesse James and hundreds of other cowpunchers, lawmen, outlaws, buffalo runners, and other individuals great and small were all real people who really did the things that made them famous.

So I try to write novels that exist somewhere between the real and the legend.

I write with a map and a history book beside me.

If you like fast-paced Westerns full of adventure, I hope you’ll enjoy my novels. If you do and you want to connect with me on social media, I’d encourage you to follow me on Facebook and Twitter and to visit my website at robertpeecher.com.

So cinch up your saddle, strap on your gun belt and enjoy the ride in my classic Westerns.

PICK YOUR BATTLES

Some people seem to hold grudges FOREVER, and it simmers until all you can think about is REVENGE..Well this what happened to our friend Rabbie during the War of Anarchy between the North and South. Rab was leading two other men him who were trying to get in front of the Union's Calvary. Rab was a scout for the Rebs, but he also was going to part company with the Rebels, he was tired and this war was useless as far as Rab thought. One of the two other Rebs was named Frank Cosgrove aka "Bad Eye Frank" who held a vendetta against Rab because those two were caught by the Union solders and sent to a prison camp. Rab headed for the mountains where he settled with a Ute tribe for awhile.
Times passes and Rab had his ranch in Las Vegas hills, he and Evangeline took care of their livestock and life goes on. Rab took jobs here and there to earn extra money, so one day he's sitting in a hotel lobby in Las Vegas and five hardened, mean looking men walked in looking for Rab. Let's just say of the five only three lived and were jailed for attempted murder....actually one of the three made it back to the man who hired them to tell him what happened....Bad Eye Frank..
So now there it's out in the open REVENGE, JEALOUSY that's how Bad Eye Frank thought of Rab. All the women even the leaders of the troops they all liked Rab and Bad Eye Frank wanted that attention. Bad Eye Frank had a nasty disposition, just plain mean and above all he was a conniving wealthy bully. JEALOUSY is one of the ugly aspects of humanity which guide some people to do ugly ugly things without conscious.
Bad Eye Frank got his name because his left eye was direct at you while his right eye wandered farther right also known as walled eyed. Situations like that you don't know if he was looking at you or up the street...unsettling feeling. He kept sending horrible men to kill Rab, one named Francisco TeBone trying to make a name for himself, stole from Bad Eye Frank which caused him to be whipped until the skin hung from his back. This guy was a sadist who loved murdering people which eventually he would gain notoriety as a gunman....which in his case was short lived...it's the con trying to con another of the same attributes..All I can say, some people should learn to pick their battles, Rab Sinclair isn't the type of man you should mess with..you know leave alone...nooo Bad Eye Frank was determined to get his pound of flesh..dummy..now he's has a war brought directly to him via Rab..not going to go well for Bad Eye Frank. You all who follow Rab when he rides we all cinch up with him and Cromwell, his blue roan. This author pulls you into the adventure you ride, eat and hide. Everything that Rab does so do you with enjoyable reading and mutual respect for Mother Earth...ride easy everyone keep that cinch tight and your coffee or tea hot and sweet..

Rab Sinclair is settling down. At least that is the plan. Bad Eye Frank wants him to settle down 6 feet under. Bad Eye is a thief and a murderer. During the war, Rab led him right into a Union cavalry where he arrested and spends 2 years in a Yankee prison. We he got out, he got rich with a freighting business by skimming goods off of each wagon. And he has spent 5 years finding Rab. He sends 5 seasoned gunmen after him. 3 end up dead and two went running. However, Rab is wounded badly in the shoulder. He went to his friend Grady and Grady's charge, Caleb Morgan, for help and healing. He is back at his ranch in Las Vegas when Grady gets murdered by yet more gunmen looking for Rab. Caleb escapes to warn him and his girl, Evangeline. Lots of exciting shoot outs and planning as more gunmen end up dead, forcing Rab to finally stop Bad Eye Frank.

RP. has. penned the second Tab Sinclair western novel , which has our intrepid hero be the subject of a man hunt. RS. has been involved in a shooting dispute and the men he engaged with were killed. When the brother found out about his brothers death he sent hired killers in search of RS. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS

A western set in New Mexico.

I love to read Westerns. I grew up in New Mexico. So, a western novel in which the plot is located in my home state is a special treat. I read two Rab Sinclair novels this week, and I like his character, and the easy, but interesting pace of Robert Preacher's writing style. I took off one star because the proofreading of this novel was not done well, and that distracted my reading.

A Long Time Grudge

A very good read !
Lots of men tried to help honor that grudge and they bit the dust. Love that Rab.
This book is action packed , and the end came too soon though.
Too much review might spoil it , I recommend this book for all readers.

Fun book

Probably would have given a five were it not for all the many typos. I do not understand. Are the proof readers all on vacation?
