Keeping the One shifter’s love for fun and games brings him to the chance at the ultimate prize…if he remembers that winning isn’t everything.
For over a century, Lachlan Addair worked for the Shifter Council as an enforcer. When the ruling body decided to open a new investigative branch, Lachlan was the first to volunteer. Infiltrating and exploring a shifter unit without detection is right up his curious cat’s alley. When Lachlan’s duty to report the causes of strife within a lynx pride has him slipping into Councilman Goldstein’s estate undetected—just for fun, of course—Lachlan stumbles across Thad—his mate. Unfortunately, the wild turkey shifter is standoffish and brusque. He doesn’t trust Lachlan and makes no secret that he thinks the mate-pull is nothing but a trick of the pheromones—something he’s determined to ignore. Lachlan loves a good puzzle and is undeterred. He admires Thad’s loyalty and uses his extensive wiles to cultivate a little of that for himself. When Lachlan is injured wrapping up a case, will it be the catalyst his mate uses to reject Lachlan—his job could bring so much danger to his flock, after all—and send him on his way?
A tale of reluctant mates, a cat shifter/enforcer ready to change his life, and a fierce wild turkey shifter who grew up in captivity and is determined to be independent are at the center of this second story in the ‘Shifters Regime’ series. While the shifter council and its shenanigans play a role, the focus is really on the continued integration of the previously captive bird shifter flock whose members are trying to build a new life. Many have already found their mates, but not everyone is happy to enter a new bond they can’t escape from.
I enjoyed the mating between Lachlan and Thad, especially since Thad didn't really want to be mated in the beginning. He had been tortured by scientists in the past and didn't want to be controlled by a mating. I'm so happy that he changed his mind. There was danger, tension, a bit of action, and lots of heat. The characters were very intriguing (there were many) and the story was enthralling with a HEA.
Liked this one better than the first. In the first Cho felt so very young and incapable and naiv in his mate's presence. In this one they both felt more adult. My niggle is with the issues that were raised, like that Thad was not impressed with fate choosing his partner instead of having controlover his own fate. In my opinion it was never satisfactory explained what made him change his mind as his opinion seemed to change out of the blue after caring for Lachlan off page.
i like lachlan and i understand that thad's doubts, love can be a cage and with his obsession with control it's understandable, he didn't get raped but i felt uncomfortable during their first scene together, lachlan should have been more patient he used their mutual attraction against him, otherwise their their first date is cute.

I enjoyed the story and its characters. Some of the storyline did not finish with some of the characters introduced. I will look forward to the next book.
I didn’t get where the Tom came from in the title until the end. Tom Turkey! So funny. Anyway, I really didn’t expect to like Thad as much as I did. I’m really enjoying this series so far. I’m interested to see what happens with the new human, Pete.
Charlie Richards is a comforting read for me. I like seeing familiar faces, I know what’s going to happen in the story and there’s usually something sweet or fun that surprises me and keeps thing interesting.
I think you’re ok reading this as a standalone but book 1 would help and knowing the entire story – like a million books long by now! – makes it even better.
reread On a compulsive re-re-read of the various series that make up the Stone Ridge world. One by one as stand alones, these short stories and novellas are usually a 3 with the occasional 2 dropped in. As a binge read they move to a higher category as the world building and plots become cohesive and more complex as the individuals merge. Alone they often feel like there are gaps or unfinished plots. Problem is there are over 190 books.
I really liked Thad. He’s my favorite character in this book. He doesn’t believe in this mate crap and I’m all for that theory. Shifter mates are getting a bit predictable but Thad’s denial spices up this story.
Some of my favorite characters are the members of the Flock the Stone Ridge wolves rescued from the scientists. Thad found his sexy mate in this tale and I can't wait for Prescott to finally get his.
