Although he was usually regarded as English, as he spent the majority of his life in England, he was born in Wales, where he also died.
He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1950 "in recognition of his varied and significant writings in which he champions humanitarian ideals and freedom of thought."

মন ও মগজকে একমুখী চিন্তার পথে ধাবিত করলেই চিন্তারাজ্যে কায়েম হয় স্বৈরতন্ত্র। একদল আপাতদৃষ্টিতে 'ভালো মানুষ' গোষ্ঠীতন্ত্র কায়েম করলে তা আমাদের চোখে ফ্যাসিবাদ মনে হয় না ; বরং বেশির ভাগ লোকে তা তারিফের দৃষ্টিতে দেখে। তাদেরকে উদ্দেশ্য করে রাসেল বলেছেন,
'There is a tendency, as strong now as at any former time, to suppose that an oligarchy is admirable if it consists of ‘good’ men. The government of the Roman Empire was ‘bad’ until Constantine, and then it became ‘good.’ In the Book of Kings, there were those who did right in the sight of the Lord, and those who did evil. '
গণতন্ত্রের নামে 'ফেরেশতার শাসনের' বন্দোবস্ত যা রাসেলের মতে, 'Rule Of Saints' হলেই গণতন্ত্র প্রাণ পায় না। বরং এমন শাসন যদি জনতাকে একমুখী চিন্তা করতে বাধ্য করে ; এমন পরিবেশ সৃষ্টি করে যেখানে সংখ্যাগরিষ্ঠের রাজত্বের নামে একনায়কতন্ত্র প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয় তখন তা অসহনীয় হয়ে ওঠে। এক্ষেত্রে তিনি স্মরণ করেছেন মহাচীনের মহামতি কনফুসিয়াসের। যিনি বলেছেন,
'Remember this, my children: oppressive government is more terrible than tigers.'
মসনদের মোহ গণতন্ত্রীকে পেয়ে বসলে সে একান্ত অনুগত গোলামশ্রেণি তৈরি করে। তার বাসনা সবাই শুধু তার দেখানো পথেই হাঁটবে। ভিন্নমত ও ভিন্নপথ হয়ে ওঠে অসহনীয়। কেমন সমাজ চায়, এমন গণতন্ত্রীরা, রাসেলের মতে,
'When a spirit of ferocious dogmatism prevails, any opinion with which men disagree is liable to provoke a breach of the peace. Schoolboys are apt to illtreat a boy whose opinions are in any way odd, and many grown men have not got beyond the mental age of schoolboys. A diffused liberal sentiment, tinged with skepticism, makes social coöperation much less difficult, and liberty correspondingly more possible.'
বয়সে বুড়ো অথচ মনে শিশু - এমন জনতাই অনেক গণতন্ত্রীর কাম্য। যা গণতন্ত্র প্রতিষ্ঠার পথে সবচেয়ে বড়ো বাঁধা।
রাসেলের এই আঠারো পাতার প্রবন্ধটি লিখেছিলেন প্রায় নব্বই বছর বয়সে। বহুদর্শী এক প্রজ্ঞাবান প্রবীণের চিন্তার নির্যাস প্রত্যেকটি লাইনে লাইনে পাবেন। মসনদের মোহের কার্যকারণ ও ফলাফল নিয়ে এমন মূল্যবান লেখা যে কোনো পাঠকের পড়া উচিত।
