Pencil sketched illustrations, drawing seemingly sketched through the eyes of children, and twenty pieces of trivial advice. The absurdist book touches upon themes of everyday life in the world of a child reader.

“Don’t read when you’re hungry”, “Don’t read when you’re angry”, and “Read to your dog” are each written on pages adjacent to imaginative pencil drawings. The young adult book delivers pieces of advice on how and when to read. Some of the nuggets of wisdom urge the reader to strive to learn from books, and then go back to their everyday life.

Twenty pieces of advice tell children to read at certain times of the day in addition to the words: “Don’t define why you read.”

The illustrations portray the vast world of a child’s curiosity. The short and concise sentences are easy reads themselves but contradict one another. The book stresses the importance of reading by repeatedly saying reading is unimportant. The last sentence of the book advises the reader to not listen to advice.

Despite the apparent contradiction, the afterword of the book explains the relevance of the absurd stylistic approach. The author describes the book’s therapeutic approach to getting children to read by saying that visual stimulation corresponding to short, concise sentences, can help children get used to reading out loud.

Some of the themes used are that of family, nature, everyday life, and reading.

“You can hide in a book for three days and not do your homework or visit your aunt. On the fourth day, go back to your life."
“Lend your book even if you know that you won’t get it back.”

The last piece of advice contradicts the preceding pages: “Don’t listen to me.”
