Though the book felt as an information brochure or a commercial to the “NeuroGym”, I found the overall information John was trying to convey, quite useful. The simplicity of language when explaining some basic fundamentals of neuroscience and brain was also a bonus.

Wasn’t thrilled with the print design but absolutely loved the content. Read in a morning. Will revisit frequently as the lessons are needed!

I bought this book forever ago and forgot i had it, so i picked it up recently to read it. The book got interesting for me around Chapter 10 when it lays out things like “your brain on goals” and “your brain on plans” and i really liked reading about the emerging theories coming out of brain studies. If i’d read this book when i originally bought it, i would have gotten more from it and rated it higher.

If you have read other books or have a basic knowledge already on neuroplasticity, the majority of the book likely won’t impress you but if you are starting to dive into topics like this, I would recommend picking this one up. The book tends to give you the ‘what’ versus the ‘how’ but i think each person who reads it will have different takeaways and aha moments depending on their prior knowledge.

Also: this book obviously part of a marketing funnel, so you’ll see testimonials of John Assaraf’s NeuroGym customers throughout, and invitations to opt in for further resources at the end of each chapter. If that’s not your thing, you’ll be able to skip pages here and there and that makes for a slightly quicker read.

When I first picked up INNERCISE, I have to admit—I was skeptical. Books that talk about “unlocking your brain’s hidden power” just sound a little bit out there to me. But despite that, I gave it a shot—and I’m really glad I did.

Assaraf dives into how we can train both our conscious and subconscious minds to help shape the life we want. The book is filled with practical tools, mindset shifts, and what he calls “innercises”—mental exercises that help rewire your beliefs and behaviours. And they really resonated with me.

What stood out most was his personal story about commitment—how his mentor challenged him to decide how committed he really was to changing his life. That question hit home for me, right at a time in my life when I’m also looking to reshape things and commit to new paths forward. I love when a book finds you at exactly the right moment, and INNERCISE did just that—much like Atomic Habits, Four Thousand Weeks, and The 4-Hour Workweek did in the past.

There’s a particularly vivid metaphor early on where Assaraf compares your subconscious to a gorilla—a fun and memorable way to think about taming your deeper habits and instincts. The “Take 6” breathing exercise became a favourite, and I found myself actually doing the breathing while reading, which was a lovely little moment of mindfulness.

One exercise that really stuck with me was writing out “a day in my life three years from now.” Visualizing that future and reading it daily has become a grounding practice for me. It’s simple, yet powerful.

If you’re at a crossroads, or just need a motivational push, I’d definitely recommend this book. It’s not just inspirational—it’s practical and full of actionable ideas. Sure, there’s a bit of marketing sprinkled throughout, but it never felt pushy.

Final rating? A solid 4.5 out of 5. It may not be an all-time favourite, but it absolutely earned its place on my shelf—and in my personal growth journey.

If you have ever wondered why you break your New Year’s Resolutions very early, drop your diet, or stop exercising regularly, Innercise: The New Science to Unlock Your Brain's Hidden Power by John Assaraf may help you to answer those questions.

In this book, Assaraf explains the inner workings of the mind and why our brains override our plans. He also gives us answers to how we can overcome this problem.

You aren’t broken, just human, which sometimes is the same thing.

The author uses a hybrid of NLP, LOA, Self-Hypnosis, Mindfulness, and other disciplines to help his readers learn ways to change the patterns of self-sabotage.

Innercise is well written and takes the time to explain the science and psychology behind his methods. We like this book because it is compatible with the Christian faith.

As I enter the final years of my life I am on a personal Spiritual journey of out and in. John Assaraf is an amazing guide to the in of your brain. He calls the experience Innercise the exercise manual for your brain. From simple to do breathing techniques that are the platform of this work to how it ties into manifesting, meditation and spirituality. If you are on any kind of journey of the mind you need this book as a companion to whatever guide book you are using. I have used this book while completing the Ultimate Success Master Class led by the incomparable Natalie Ledwell and it has helped me get unstuck several times. I don’t say this often but I will today this book will be a reference for me for the rest of my life.

John Assaraf is a man who is committed to helping others. The book has interesting tidbits about how we can reprogram our minds to achieve what we want in life. I have no doubt any reader of this book will benefit if they follow his techniques. The thing I didn't like about the book was that it seemed to be directing the reader to go further with some of John's other more expensive trainings. All in all, though, I rate it as a worthy read, easy to follow, lots of exercises you can try that are guided on his website. These kind of trainings take time and if you commit to making the time, you will get something from it.

A useful and informative read, but super "self-helpy" and full of program promotion

Innercise contains a lot of useful ideas and information about changing the way we think, process, and approach the world.

I will say, however, that the book spends too much time promoting the Innercise online coaching program. Many times I got the impression that I was reading an extended brochure for that course.

Nevertheless, I came away with some useful techniques for snapping myself out of unwanted thought and emotion patterns, and a better understanding of the dynamics of a brain attempting to change itself.

I was pretty disappointed by this book. I picked it up after hearing the author interviewed. There isn't very much that he espouses that hasn't been said before and better by other people, for example by Tony Robbins.

There is a lot of selling of his programs in his book. I can understand that there would be some but it was too much, too often. He also uses this "calm the circuits" activity which is really a very simple breathing technique, nothing new here, yet he uses a lot of space in the book to repeat each step of it. Totally unnecessary.

I would give this book a miss and go to the master, TR, if you are interested in this sort of material.

An amazing book that will support you

If your looking to make a major change in your life by losing weight, quitting bad habits and overcoming fears--then look no further!

I read this book with the intention of just trying to improve myself with losing weight.

What I love about this book is it breaks down how to do the exercises in a simplistic way without having to stress how to do the exercises.

It is truly a great investment. They also offer additional supports through their website.

Enjoy and be prepared to have a change for the better.♥️

Great thoughts and ideas

I liked this book very much, even though I felt the "upsell" about the NeuroGym courses. All in all I found great methaphors like the 800 pound gorilla, Einstein and Frankenstein, the straw to breathe out (Take 6).
The book has powerful references, John did his research pretty well.
I liked the stucture and the examples of real people as well. A good read, worth 4 stars for me!

Great concepts. this book had a great foundation. like many of the other books on personal improvement, they require study. that said I was able to take away one key nugget from the book which will be life changing helpful. there are so many great insights on those book however they require practice or continual effort of studying.

I’ve attended Tony Robbins UPW, and some of the stuff Tony also teaches at his event is also in the book but in John’s methods/ways.

I saw John’s interview with Tom Bileyu and knew it from the first minutes that his book will be a great read for me. This man sounded so humble and honest from the very time I saw his interview.

Hands down a great practical book, with good digestible science.
I love how all the Innercises are so practically useful.

More power to John Assaraf. 🙏🙏

Just ignore all the attempts to promote his program in this book.

This book is gold!

Based on neuroscience and an understanding of how the brain works, John not just explains but provides practical action steps (what he calls Innercise) to implement life-changing strategies.

The book also contains links to his website where you can find audio/video guides to help you with the innercises.

Good book with some great tips and strategies about improving your life through unlocking your brain's hidden power. I do wish there were some other detailed information and steps. Overall, the information in the books wasn't all that new but did shed light on strategies to improve ones life and goals.

I'm recommending this book! I thought long about taking it out from the shelf, thinking that it would be difficult, scientific language, but it wasn't! It was really easy to read, yet packed with some really interesting facts about how the brain works - exactly what I hoped for. Many specific brain exercises included. About the advertisements - it wasn't that bad, just ignore them ;)

Better books available about the brain than this one

Reads more like a script for a television ad than a serious brain discussion. Lots of promotion, thin on substance. It might have some value to someone new to brain science but it shouldn't be where your inquiry into the topic ends.

Just lovely! Streight explanations, not beating around the bush. Stories of others are highlited which makes easy to navigate through the book if we are let's say not interested to read stories of others. Nice book! Getting new from the author... ;-)

I read reviews before reading Inndercise. I was warned. This book does come off like an infomercial for the author's programs. However, in between all of that, I found some helpful information. I liked the deep breaths and suggested visualizations.

This book is probably one of the few books out there that provide practical and step wise instructions. It is very much a self help manual and requires multiple readings of it. I am going to reread it and take it slowly to create the right routines since it is so packed with Innercises.

I preferred his other books over this one. I think the hard copy would be better.
