The magnificent old, the masterful new, this is the premise in this lush publication with 180 plant portraits that span 1,000 years. These portraits were selected from the unique collection of Dr. Shirley Sherwood and from the rich treasures of Oxford's libraries and museums.
Sherwood compares a wealth of botanical art from different eras, although strangely our own modern times do not seem to be represented. The most modern works here date into the 1940's and 50's. That being said, the art from the time periods chosen are captivating, and the way that illustrations of similar species are grouped together drew me even further into the details. I look forward to enjoying more of Sherwood's books.
