I would like to state right at the very beginning of this book, that it is my heart filled desire to bring the balance to biblical prosperity principles and to fill the gap which I feel is so necessary for the Church of Jesus Christ. This book has been birthed through my own personal experiences of attending prosperity conferences and in a professional capacity, having to counsel hundreds of Christians on financial matters. Having been brought up to believe that poverty was ‘Godly’ and that the ‘rich’ were in some way not fully accepted in the body of Christ, I was liberated to hear of biblical prosperity being taught to the church. I attended many seminars, studied the material and listened to all of the tapes. I was blessed and encouraged that at last I was being taught that God was not against money or posses- sions. I subsequently embraced this neglected revelation with passion and became a serious giver into many ministries with great joy in my heart. However, I now feel strongly, that I must address many issues which are heavy on my heart for God’s people, and the subsequent pain many have felt and experienced. I have personally witnessed many Christians returning ix
BALANCING PROSPERITY PRINCIPLES from some prosperity seminars so excited and enthusias- tic but with no practical knowledge on how to prosper. I have met and spoken to hundreds of Gods people who are so genuine in their devotion and want to demonstrate their love of God by becoming generous givers. However, there are so many who are still no further forward finan- cially, despite attending such seminars, and have never experienced the breakthrough promised by the biblical message. I believe that this topic is the source of so much controversy within the body of Christ, because so far we have only heard the spiritual principle message with little or no practical outworking or follow up. The people of God are left feeling terrible guilt and inadequacy, because the messages they heard, promised increase and abundance within their finances. This in turn, may lead to confusion and discouragement.
