‘The quiet descended as her breathing stilled, and she soaked in the serenity of the forest.’
New Zealand born Australian author L.C. Conn has discovered that cosmic glow that allows her reader to make sense of the order of the universe, all in the format of a coming of age story. L.C. is a mother who is battling breast cancer and has transformed her life situation into a significant epic - the One True Child Series - which proves to be not only a sensitive examination of the coming of age time of each of our lives, but takes that discovery/recognition sequence into the realm of philosophy, a survey of good versus evil/chaos versus order and the permutations those poles have on each of us. And she manages to tie this all together in the form of young lass Carling.
After grasping our attention with Books 1, 2 and 3 of THE ONE TRUE CHILD series L.C continues to make fine use of artistic covers that draw us into the epic. Stepping into Book 4 we again appreciate the polished quality of her prose: ‘Claire Brown sat on the floor of her bedroom amidst piles of clothing, toiletries, shoes, books, and bags. She stared around her at the posters and bookshelves that lined the walls and wondered again at what she was doing. Was she really going to give up all her creature comforts to live rough on a hillside in the middle of Scotland for three months? Yes, she was, and she was very much looking forward to it. Having gained her bachelor’s degrees in arts and science, Claire was now in the final stages of her honours in archaeology, and this dig in Scotland was going to be the trip of a lifetime. Her professor and mentor, Maggie Hallaran, had picked Claire to join her on this new excavation. She had been on other smaller expeditions around the country and a couple in Australia, but never had she been so far away from her family and the security they gave her. Pulling a pile of clothes towards her, she started to sort them and remembered the other reason this was an important trip. In some ways Claire was running away, but for a very good reason. It was a painful one and one that still cut deeply at her heart—the raw and explosive breakup of her five-year relationship with Adam Ryder. He had been her childhood best friend, her confidant, her boyfriend. Up until six months ago, that is, when she had caught him cheating on her with a very beautiful redhead. She flicked her blond hair from her face with some irritation at her thoughts and shoved the clothing into the bag with a bit more force than she should have. The anger stemmed from the fact that he would not let up trying to get back together with her—calling, messaging, and never giving her a wink of sleep with his constant attempts to contact her. Claire was getting very tired of it all and wished he would just find someone else.’

Guardians (One True Child Series Book 4) by L.C.Conn continues the story of Claire, our strong female protagonist. Six years have passed for Claire, and she has grown as a young woman. In this book, Claire is recovering from her break up from her boyfriend Adam of five years. She now has accepted her special powers and is looking at going on a challenging archaeological expedition to Scotland. With her education in one hand, and her determination in the other, she heads off, and gets more than she ever expected from the experience. Finding more than just ancient artifacts, Claire learns even more about her ancestors. The author does a fantastic job with her portrayal of Claire. Claire is a strong heroine, able to survive on her own, yet full of emotion and depth. The writing is accessible, down to earth and involving. You will enjoy following Claire on another adventure as her life takes off in yet another direction. Highly recommend.

Guardians is continuation of Claire's story from a book of the same title. The author in an interesting way shows the heroine evolving, her internal transformation, changing her priorities, fight for herself and identity. But this time she walks through her life alone. Claire and her boyfriend Adam, after five years, broke up and I have to admit I was in shock and very disappointed.
Fast action, amazing world, interesting heroes- there are the advantages of this book. Actually all of L.C. Conn novels.

I did enjoy this book, just like the others i read by lc conn. Much like the others though i doubt i would have ran across it on my own. I do believe this one was probably the easiest for me to get into, but then they were all good once i was able to get into them. I am glad that i was able to read them, but i dont think i would have normally read them if i hadnt seen some reviews before hand.

Good Read
Well made characters, good story, some action, some drama, magic and romance. Was not has spellbinding has the first two books and still confused since I thought this would be the One True Child who would have a huge battle. We shall see what the last book reveals.
