Another wonderful Robert P. French crime novel takes the reader into the core of Vancouver’s darker side. It is here that Cal Rogan tries to help a family whose daughter has gone missing, the second such case in the last few months. After leaving the Vancouver PD, Rogan teams up with his former partner, Nick Stammo, to open an investigation firm. While much of the work at Stammo Rogan Investigations will be word of mouth, things are picking up slowly. Rogan agrees to meet with a woman who has recently reported her daughter missing, but feels VPD is not taking things as quickly as she would like. Ariel Bradbury has disappeared days ago and there has been no ransom demand. The Bradburys, while in the middle of a separation, have money and cannot surmise why no one has sought it. Rogan has a bad feeling about this and agrees to look into the case, working in tandem with his former colleagues. When Rogan uncovers that Ariel was involved in a children’s beauty pageant type reality show, he can only wonder who might have been lurking around, seeking her out. Rogan uncovers some issues within the show, red flags that the Bradburys ought to have realised, but cannot dwell too much on that. He also learns of a ‘grooming’ that Ariel undertook by a certain young man, all through social media. Meanwhile, Nick Stammo has been contacted by a friend in Toronto to check on his son who has made his way to the West Coast. It would seem the young man is tied-up with one of Canada’s most notorious drug dealers, which cannot bode well. Now stuck in a wheelchair, Stammo can only do so much and must come face to face with some of the people he spent his police career putting away. When Rogan discovers that his own daughter, Ellie, is being groomed online as well, he takes a proactive approach and it lights a fire under him to solve this case. All the while, a local politician has been pressured to bow out of an upcoming federal election because of a secret in his past. Might all these cases connect in some odd fashion? Rogan and Stammo will have to work quickly to save themselves and they newly-forged alliance. Another winner in the series that has me begging to know more, particularly after that great cliffhanger. French is a masterful writer and this series came out of nowhere for me. Recommended to those who have read and loved past French novels in the series, as well as anyone wanting a Canadian crime thriller to enjoy!

French opens his book with a bang and hooks the reader before too long. The story, like its characters, connect from the opening pages and the reader cannot help but push through to learn everything there is to know. Cal Rogan returns, away from the VPD, but still with some loose ties. His investigative work shines through yet again, as he continues to battle The Beast in the form of a past heroin addiction. French pulls in more personal story for Rogan, whose ex-wife and daughter play a more prominent role in this piece, leaving questions about whether they will ever reunite formally. Other characters make an impact, including Nick Stammo, whose presence in the second novel surely whetted the appetite of the series fan. Stammo gets a little of his own personal life backstory and development, though the results will surely resonate into the next novel. The list of others is long but they impact the plot so definitively and keep the reader wondering who might make another appearance down the road. With a story again set in and around Vancouver, French keeps things Canadian and yet does not go for docile. There is much grit in these pages, with a mix of chapters and narrative perspectives. The reader is pulled in and must try to keep pace, as the momentum of this tale has no room for lagging. I loved it and binged yet again to finish it in a single day. I cannot wait to see what else Robert P. French has in store for fans, but I am reaching for the next book now!

Kudos, Mr. French, for another winner. I love your writing and how smoothly things seem to flow.

4.5 stars. Reading this book is like climbing aboard an express train that takes off before you have even sat down. The pace is relentless. As I thought after book two, Stammo and Cal Rogan have teamed up to form a Private detective agency. Now in a wheelchair, Stammo does the research and calling on favours from the police and others while Cal does the leg work. Only Cal still tends to go ‘off the reservation’ which gets him into all sorts of trouble.

They are juggling cases. Cal takes on a new client - a wealthy woman whose daughter has been kidnapped. Cal is also still beholden to Walter so needs to help with security for a couple of political electioneering functions. Not his style at all. Because one of the candidates is promoting legalising drugs he is sure to invoke the anger of drug dealers so Cal is there to keep an eye out for anyone he recognises from his days as a drug addict. Unfortunately he does spot some red flags so his services are still required while he would rather be searching for the missing child.

Meanwhile Stammo is approached by an old friend who is concerned that his adult son has gotten mixed up in the wrong crowd (read drug dealers). Could these three cases somehow intersect? You betcha, and that’s when the express train goes seriously off the rails. This is another stellar book in the Cal Rogan series, and it, too ends on a cliff hanger so I will be looking for book 4 very soon.

Exciting story!! Cal Rogan, ex-cop, now a PI with former cop Nick Stammo, who is confined to a wheelchair after a recent case he assisted Cal with while he was also still a cop. Cal is an addict, the hunger eats at him every day, as he tries so hard to resist, to remain sober for his ex-wife and darling daughter, Ellie...But the lure of the drug is so very hard to endure, especially when you are constantly placed in the area of your worse times...
Cal finds himself working several cases at once, due to his feelings of thanks to some people and the money he receives in trust from another, but the case he wants to clear badly is a missing girl, about his daughter's age. He needs to research and reach out to any friend left in his old unit, but his competitive nature, wanting or Needing to find this girl Before the cops, has him leaving clues to himself and doing things without any backup!!
You can feel every emotion, and sweat with Cal as he tries to defeat his cravings and stay alive on the mean streets...A fantastic story that has you from start to end with explosive action, human frailty and the intense search to save a young girl from the worst...

Don't plan on reading this book if you have a compacted schedule. It will mess you up! The action starts on the first page and then you're off! The story, full of intertwining plots, clues and dilemma's moves very fast and before you know it you are at the end..wanting the next Cal Rogan adventure to begin. Definitely a must read. Robert french hits it out of the park with this one!

An excellent kidnap for ransom thriller that has a great storyline and believable characters. A fast paced thriller with several twists that was hard to put down. A stand a lone book in the Carl Logan series that I highly recommend.

As much I have loved the first 2 books this one does not match up to its predecessors. Even though I loved the story and its usual writing style and the edge of seat thrills, I found it to be slightly dragging at some points in the story. And one thing I kind of wonder is why Sam always goes into a relationship which is bad for both her and Ellie. In all the 3 books she made the same mistake but in this book alone that mistake was cut short quick and author also didn't show how Sam feels about Perot once his actions were known. Does she feel angry or stupid for again bringing home a criminal.
But this I definitely again recommend for mystery book lovers

New Fav Author

I love the Cal Rogan series. Things do not work out for him as he wants but then again he isn’t sure of what he wants. I like this author because when I think the usual or happy ending will happen it doesn’t. This is what happens in life which makes the characters more real. I end up staying up into the morning hours to finish the books. Try the series and you will see why.

Action as advertised but……

I am torn on this one - there was a lot of fast paced action on this one - as advertised. This is a middle book in a series but enough was explained to figure things out. This book did not really end - you have to go to the next book, etc. so…I was not happy with that. Plus I felt the main character - while interesting - was an idiot and created most of his own problems. Still the plot was good so I gave it a 4 star

Not as good as it could have been.

The ending was disappointing. After getting through the story that had too much inappropriate language…I expected a happier ending. I love Clive Cussler’s books, he is able to write great stories without offensive language and unnecessary sexual innuendos.
I think the story itself was excellent and I was kept guessing about who the players were! Could have been awesome.

Cal Rogan takes the law into his own hands to save a little girl from paedophiles and comes off badly. You can't just murder someone because you don't like them even if it's the moral thing to do and getting yourself shot is going to leave DNA. Killing your best friend's son into the bargain is going to leave a bad taste.

As detective books go this has it all. Good pace, contemporary issues, realistic plot and a side sweetheart. Had a hard time putting this down to sleep, found myself picking it up between projects!

Love the connection to the lesser known islands known as the Gulf Islands, off coast of Vancouver BC.

Editing mistakes

Was a good read but wasn't edited.

Two mistakes near end. When Matt says Hello daddy dearest Stammo refers to two words his son said. It was three. Also near end Cal talks about Stammo's wife smelled of gin. Gin doesn't have an odor. Simple mistakes which should have been caught by editing.

So-so

I am starting to get used to the first person narrative, although I am still not really liking it. Cal is an interesting character, but given his history he does live a charmed life. Will try one more book, but I have to say my interest is waning.

Gripping Action, Plot Twists, Blood and Water

Ex cops turn private and take on the had guys. Well written, in tune with what criminal enterprises are doing today in drug and human trafficking. I couldn't put it down.

Robert P French – Cal Rogan Mysteries Boxset 1-3 – Reviewed 7/21/20 – Read 6/16-19/20 7/14-15/20

When you hit bottom the only way to go is up! Family is the lifeline!

When Cal Rogan arrived at Kevin’s today and rang the doorbell, there was no answer… looking through the window Cal cannot see anyone, he tries again and still no answer. He turns to leave as he cannot let his daughter down; it hurts because he smells so bad. Walking away he hears Kevin. Thankful that he is there he turns and hurries inside because he is running late, and he just cannot do that. Rushing through his shower and dressing he is almost ready to leave when Kevin tells him that he needs his help. Cal looks at the time and he knows that he must leave now, or he will not get to the bus stop on time. He tells Kevin that they can talk when he comes back!

Cal has hit bottom, losing his job (which he loved), his wife (the woman he loves), and his daughter (his reason for living). The only person that had helped and stood by him since he lost everything due to his drug addiction was his best friend, Kevin. The one good thing in his life has been knowing that he could come to Kevin’s, shower, and change to nice clothes so that he can visit his daughter, Ell. Now he finds his best friend dead, the VPD ruled it a suicide, but Cal knows better. He knows that there is no way that Kevin would do this to himself. After the VPD leaves, Cal decides that he must solve this case, and he knows that he needs to get clean.

And now the story begins….

This boxset contains: Junkie, Oboe and Lockstep in the Cal Rogan Mystery Series

What did I like? Gee, Cal Rogan came into my life and my heart just broke! I know that life is tough, and there are people out there that once they start drugs they cannot stop unless they find the motivation to do it on their own. I read all three of these books and just wanted to be there for him. To help, to give him that drive, to keep him clean, and give back the life and loves that he truly deserves. Now on the other hand, if I did that then I would lose the most important thing, what happened to him is the reason for the books. We need for him to go through hell so that he will come back and visit us again and again!

What will you like? This is a nonstop incredible action-packed, gripping, captivating, interesting, thought-provoking, heartbreaking emotions, and ingenious plots. Those are just a few of the adjectives that apply to these books. They are all beautifully written and edited! The characters are amazing, and so unique but have the feel of the guy next door! Robert’s style using the POV is marvelous, he has done an excellent job of taking hold of you from book one and not letting go of you till the last page turns in book three. The details and descriptions are so creative that you feel the fear, and the desperate search for the answers, in addition to the bullets, and despair! Join Cal as he works to put his life back together and continues to fight the monkey on his back that never stops screaming. An excellent read for everyone! We have lots to look forward to as Robert has finished three more in this series book 4 “Three”, book 5 “Cabal”, plus Book 6 will be released on August 13th.

Note: I will be featuring Robert on my site for August, drop-in, and learn more about this awesome author!

The Beast is never far away. For Cal "Rocky" Rogan, every day is a battle against himself. Being a Vancover Police Detective was always his goal after he got addicted to heroin. It wasn't until his best friends murder that he was in a position to build himself back up. Thanks to Larry Corlissi and Arnold stepping in and stepping up for him Rogan has a second chance.

That second chance was almost taken from him when he was wrapped in a case where a child was murdered. With his new minder Nick Stammos at his side he doesn't allow for the Beast to stand in his way. Now a year later he is no longer Detective Rogan, but has partnered with his now friend Nick Stammos at , " Stammos Rogan Investigations Inc." After he was betrayed by his fellow co-workers and subjected to inhuman treatment, he would have never been able to work without looking over his shoulders at the VPD.

As a new case unfolds and he meets with Rebecca Bradbury, who doesn't feel that the VPD is giving her daughters disappearance the attention it deserves. Nothing is ever as it seems and the case seems to go from a child abduction to a full blown out of proportion criminal case. David Bradbury and Rebecca Bradbury seem to be holding important details back and Rogan's ex-wife Sam and his daughter Ellie seem to once again be placed in the middle of the investigation.

The writter's style seems to roll with the turns of events. Robert P. French is quick with the storyline and keeps the supsense right at the tip of the readers purviews. One thing that kept me thinking, was why are Sam and Ellie always wrapped up in the middle of these cases? I feel like a threat to the family would be enough to keep Cal determined to keep them at a distance, to protect them. Somehow, they seem to always be right at the center of it all. It makes me wonder, is Vancouver that small that they are encircled in every case? I enjoy seeing Cal and Nick's relationship become something more. Cal Rogan has become a picture in my head of what a determined, sexy, stubborn, yet damaged detective/investigator would look like.

I am looking forward to what will happen next. The book left off on a cliffhanger and I wonder if after all that has happened, will Nick Stammo stick by Rogan's side. What will happen with Sam and Ellie now and what is in Cal "Rocky " Rogan's future?

I’ve just finished Lockstep the third novel in the Cal Rogan series, and it was every bit as good as the other two.

Cal Rogan is an ex-detective and recovering heroin addict. He has left the Vancouver Police Department and with his friend, another ex-detective who is now wheelchair-bound following an incident in their last case together has set up a PI company, Stammo and Rogan.

Rogan has entered into a contract with Rebecca Bradbury to find her eight-year-old daughter who has been missing for several days. Ellie, Rogan’s daughter attends the same school as Ariel, the missing girl.

Meantime, Stammo has agreed to help a friend, yet another ex-cop, find his teenage son hasn’t been in contact for some time.

There is a third case that Rogan is working on that of a candidate who has received death threats.

Political blackmail, drug peddlers, paedophilia along with his desire for heroin, keep Rogan busy. But are the three cases connected? Both he and Stammo begin to think they are.

This is another riveting story. A hero who struggles with his demons, an ex-cop who struggles with his new wheelchair-bound life, personal problems, and police activity are all included. It is a stand-alone novel but better if read following the other two.

And the ending, really means you have to buy, beg, borrow or … so you can read the upcoming book, the next in the series. I’m really looking forward to it.

Note I was given a copy of the book to read by the author and I really enjoyed it and give it five stars.

Robert P. French returns with a third book in the Cal Rogan series. Cal Rogan, a former detective with the Vancouver Police Department and recovering heroin addict, is still fighting his demons in Lockstep. Rogan and former VPD detective, Nick Stammo, have partnered to start a Private Investigation Firm. Stammo is a paraplegic from an injury he obtained while working a case with Rogan when both were detectives for the VPD. Juggling three complex cases, Stammo delves into researcing and calling in favors. Cal finds himself back on the streets of Vancouver's drug district. Thus, the struggle continues with old demons. The complex cases, several characters, going from past to present makes this a most compelling read. Fast paced suspense at its best. Cal Rogan is a protagonist you would love to hate, but can't. I am a voracious reader, and bit of a book snob. Lockstep captured and held my attention from start to finish. If you enjoy Jack Reacher, Harry Bosch, and Eve Dallas, you will love Cal Rogan. I do not like spoilers, therefore, I try not to include them in my reviews. I highly recommend this book, you will not be disappointed. If you have not read the previous two books in the series, this can be read as a stand alone.

This one wasn’t my favorite of the three. It ends in a cliffhanger so I know there’s another book coming, which is good, but the constant back and forth of Sam and Cal is almost exhausting, as is Sam’s convenient relationships with a man close to every single investigation. This woman is not made out to be a stupid character accept in this instance. She’s painted out to be a gold digger who goes after rich men but is completely blind to the fact that they’re either drug lords or pedophiles and it’s always a guy who is using her to get to Cal. I mean give the woman a break.

All in all, I liked the story and I’m glad Ariel is safe. I like how Cal and Stammo have their own detective agency now, which allows him to skirt the law even further than he already was. I’m anxious to know how he’s going to get himself out of the predicament he’s now in.

The Cal Rogan I fell in love with in the first two books is back, and just as lovable (and almost as flawed) as before. He solves crimes while fighting his own demons. The story is well-written and fast-paced with just the right amount of setting detail, the outcome is satisfactory, and at least this time Cal isn't beaten up too often! Jack Reacher and John Milton, move over, there's a new kid on the block!
