The Royal Trials were never meant to be easy, not even for an imposter like Rybet Waise. But nothing could have prepared her for the magical storms, mutated animals and malicious gods standing in her way.
There is no time for tears, mere hours after being bathed in Prince Alexander’s blood, Rybet must embark on a quest. The second trial dictates she find a missing magical artefact--Queen Ophelia's crown.
Released from the overbearing confines of the royal palace, Rybet competes not only with the other remaining ladies, but also with the land itself. Magic is more volatile than ever, and the gods have come out to play.
Royal love interests who don’t know how to share only make things harder for this dirty pond-dweller--if that’s really all she is.
Rybet will do whatever it takes to make it out alive, and with her heart unbroken.
**SEEKER is book TWO of The Royal Trials trilogy and ends with another cliffhanger**
It was a bit too predictable for me. Then there was the F’ing 3 brothers piece that was very weird (in my opinion); reverse harem, I get, but I draw the line on members of the same family (I am probably alone in this, but hey, free speech and all). I love the plot but it was too predictable and the weirdness was a difficult piece to read. 2 stars.
Man, I love Tate James. I have been waiting for Seeker to come out so I could dive into it. I hate cliffhangers.. and then waiting for the next book to come out. It ages me.
Okay, not going to lie.. this series is starting to get predictable now. Maybe it's because I was so in love with Kit Davenport series that this just seems to follow the same-ish pattern? I don't know if that really makes sense.. but it's early and I need coffee. Now that doesn't mean I'm not enjoying the shit out of this series, because I am. I love the characters and the little twists and turns.. but I'm not getting shocked or anything. I'm just like.. been there, seen that. Next!
Other than that, I still hate cliffhangers and Tate always delivers them! Now it's another waiting game because I really need the next book :(
Well... that could be better. I mean.. it has potential, but it felt messed up, adding some major things to the plot. Unnecessary in my opinion. We'll see. I'm going to read the last one, but I'm not expecting much tbh.
PS. I needed more *hot scenes* in contrast to all that drama and adventure fantasy style that it provided.
I've found my new pet peeve in RHs. The book calls itself an RH but then the love interests or just one in particular cough Xan cough are all like we can't share, how dare you ask us to share, how would you feel if you made me share blah blah blah. Like I don't fucking care. This is supposed to be fantasy, I don't want any arguing. Also like poly relationships do exist in real life so
Also please outlaw spurting in sex scenes. Ugh no.
I liked how we got to know more about the world and the mythology that existed before the current tyrant. I'm curious to learn more about the various deities. Also I still like Calla but I so called her identity from like the beginning of the first book lmao. I fucking knew it.
So still predictable and mostly fun. Honestly, if you cut Xan out of the scenes, I think this book would have even improved a full star. There's something i can't stand about his arrogant fucking ass.
The ending makes it seem like but I don't believe it for one second. But ya know if she ended up with just one love interest that would be okay with me. Tho if she does, then please stop calling this a RH. ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
WAH! This book ended on a SERIOUS cliffhanger! If the third book wasn't already released as I finished this one I probably would've went insane!
This book starts off right where the first ended. It takes care of the cliffhanger ending of the first book and shit just absolutely starts hitting the fan left and right! Ry and her boys are now on a wild goose chase for a crown in the second trial. And there is so much action and hidden romance that you can't help but just keep reading.
You just think that you have read books with a "so called" cliffhanger.. that is until you read one that literally ends hanging on by a thread on the side of a cliff lol. The unfortunate part is that I held off on reading this one in the series as long as I could stand because it took so long for it to come out after the first and I was anticipating the same for book three. I wish I had stuck to my guns but I caved and now my impatient self is going to have to wait /cry!!
Though the book literally starts where the last one left off, I was very surprised that this book didn't pick up and flow off the first book, with the eliminations, and dramatic deaths. I feel like we are playing a whole new ball game now, away from the castle. This in itself would probably normally be a tad jarring but I love the characters so much I just rolled with it. Now I'm not a fan of this RH feel with the one dude that's like its me or else.. RH only works for me when everyone is totally dismissive of it and fine with it. Now I feel conflicted and super confused.
After a dramatic start with some weirdness from Rybet and a marking which looks interesting, the candidates are off outside the castle each with a stone to use to track the original queens crown. Rybet on the other hand, does her thing, and ends up in a hotmess lol. Rybet has some interesting "magic" she is desperately trying to hide, and now there are a whole host of new players in the game, and they are picking sides.. Will Fate pick Rybets side? Our 3 princes are tagging along for the ride, at least until choices can't be made fast enough. I don't want to give anything away but things are coming to a head here in The Royal Trials.. maybe its less important that Rybet win and more important that she save her people, and claim her birthright!
This was a super enjoyable read even if it didn't follow the first books story line really and we seem to have set off on a a new chapter so to speak! Can't wait for the next one!
Just as riveting as book one, this trilogy is easily taking over my life. Rybet has not been killed yet in the challenge to win the prince's hearts and she refuses to let them be her end. Continuing with fruitless challenges, Rybet works to prove herself as a noble woman rather than the street rat she is. With the help of a few she continues to slip by unnoticed. However the rules are changing and Rybet is going to learn more about herself than she ever expected to before. I love her character and how outspoken she is. Now that she is learning more about her background, she's going to change her destiny. Love the slow relationship growth between them all and I can't wait to see how she gets her HEA and kingdom. The guys' are struggling with sharing and I can't wait to see what the outcome is!
I so absolutely hate cliffhangers man!!! UGH!! Damnit this series is so freaking good... Such a freaking page turner!! Come on Tate James where the hell is book 3? Please don't make me wait too long!
Oh my God! What a hell of a ride and what an ending! I'm so glad that the next book in this series is being released soon, because seriously, how are people dealing with these kind of cliffhangers? I fell in love with those guys, okay? You can't leave me hanging like this! (Pun intended. I know. Too soon. Not funny.)
The first book was already a really amazing surprise, but the second book was just as good, and that is a rarity. From the very start the story was exciting and the pace was fast, but not too fast. I liked that one of the big reveals was done in the first book so we could now enjoy the aftermath of it. Our heroine could spend some time with all three princes and I realised that just like the heroine I fell in love with all three of them. I really hope they figure their shit out and she can have all three of them. We know it's possible, cultural wise, so I'm rooting for it!
The writing style of this book is really nice too. I love how easy it reads and how naturally it flows. Sometimes the phrases used feel very modern, but it's a fantasy world so the author can create that society however she wants and it didn't really bother me. Actually, it made the world and the characters feel a little closer to me and I really enjoyed it.
And even though the big reveal of this book wasn't much of a surprise (I mean, we all saw it coming from miles away, did we?), I still raced through the book because the plot was gripping and made that I just wanted to keep on reading and reading. I just had to know what would happen next and next and next. And I'm left with that feeling since the book ends with a huge cliffhanger (pun intended once more, still not funny).
Starting with book one, Imposter, James has been throwing some plot twists and surprises at us. My major critique for the first was that the surprises just didn't surprise me.
Honestly, the series, so far, is following a bit of a predictable pattern where the big reveals don't make my jaw drop. If you're an avid reader of fantasy, I'm doubtful that you'll be surprised either.
THAT BEING SAID, I still really enjoyed Seeker. There's something fun about James' stories even in the midst of their danger, magic, and angst. Rybet/Callaluna is in the middle of a situation that's been building up for decades, and she's undeniably in over her head.
She still has her moments of sass and independence, where the streetwise kid who was raised in the Pond shines through and takes the lead. I love the ways her true self sneaks out even when she's dripping in jewels and satin. I act. James is also embracing the typical path of her story, and it really did make me laugh out loud when other characters reveal that they've figured out things that are total "jaw droppers" to even Rybet/Calla.
The guys are in all different places when it comes to this relationship; even though they're brothers, or perhaps BECAUSE they're brothers, the idea of sharing isn't going on smoothly as the HEA lovers would hope. I think it's all going to work out in the end; there's some drama towards the end of the book that I think will have them all reevaluating their priorities and who/what they really want.
Overall, Seeker was a fun return to Calla's world. There's some big action in store for book three, and hopefully more steam ahead as well.
I actually pre-ordered this book because I enjoyed the first in the series. "Imposter" was reliably predictable; I wanted exactly what I got. Unfortunately, the second installment was a flop for me. I was turned off by all the typos- including major typos like entire chunks of sentences missing. It's like the author was in such a rush to get this out the door that she declined to read through the finished product. I have no doubt that at least half of the errors would have been corrected had the author read through the book even once. To make matters worse, the storyline was unbearably irritating- there was so much jealousy and drama that the first book definitely didn't sign me up for. If you're expecting Kit Davenport, or even "Imposter," you won't find it here.
Series review: Do you want a super predictable reverse harem/why choose version of The Selection series but with hunger games elements? The Royal Trials could be for you!
Imposter: ⭐️⭐️⭐️Predictable but compelling and I enjoyed the intrigue even if it was obvious where the twists would happen.
Seeker: ⭐️⭐️ Started to get a little slow and boring and the steam/tension wasn’t very well written. I also didn’t like that there was so much jealousy in a RH/WC book.
Heir: ⭐️ I got so BORED and the promise of “there is more going on than it appears” from book one never actually paid off.
Overall, it’s predictable and got boring, but it has a HEA and if you liked The Selection, you might enjoy it.
Calla screams herself hoarse in Zan’s bed as she watches him bleed out while being unable to stop it. He removed her blindfold to reveal himself, and immediately suffered the punishment for a broken blood vow. Now Calla realizes the three princes have been masquerading as their tutors all week and were bound with magic not to reveal themselves to any of the contestants. Her heart in shambles, Calla and the remaining contestants begin week two of the trials on a quest to seek Queen Ophelia’s crown.
Since Ophelia’s death, magic has been unreliable and something only the royals can wield in a diluted form, but even they cannot stop errant magic gone wrong in nature. The usurper king has been draining the land of magic, and now the land is fighting back. The journey is fraught with danger for the ladies, especially Calla, whom someone desperately wants dead.
Wow. Lots of stuff going on here, and the book takes a complete turn toward the end. The more the story goes on, the more the mystery deepens. Holy cliffhangers! I’m still Team Zan and Team Lee, so look lively, boys!
Meh.
The cliffhanger of the previous book was major. So, I was really excited to read Seeker and find out what happened next. The plot of this book was amazing. Many exciting secrets were revealed while Rybet was on the quest and many unexpected turns also took place, which I really enjoyed. The battle at the end of the book was probably my favorite scene from this book. It was so explicitly described that I felt like it was happening right in front of me. It felt amazing. It’s still insane to me how Tate James can accomplish so much in one book that isn’t even that long. This book is smaller compared to her others, yet so much happened.
The cliff hanger wasn’t very nice but at this point very much expected. I have so many questions and am nervous to start book 3 as I need happiness. I really enjoy this story so far, sure some of the plot lines are easy to guess but that doesn’t make them any less enjoyable. I’m fully loving these characters. Sagen is also becoming one of my favorite characters.
Solid! Definitely could benefit from some light proofreading (hi, I'm available and cheap!) - lots of its/it's mix-ups, but I love the characters and the story moved along well, and we got some smut. Can't wait to see what happens next!
That cliff hanger from book one shook me to the core, so of course I had to jump right into book two to find out what would happen next & it did not disappoint. This series has got to be one of my favorite reads for 2019! It is just so good! The plot got even more intricate and more questions arise as crazy events occur. I can not wait to get my hands on book three because I need to know what will happen next. This book also ends on a cliff hanger, but thankfully there is not too much of a wait for book three.
Like I said above, the plot gets so much more detailed in this installment. I loved trying to figure out and piece together what was going on. I will say that some of the reveals in this book was obvious from book one, but there were still some twists that took me off guard. This book amped up the fantasy element, but again, not to such an extent that I had a hard time following what was going on.
Just like in book one, I really liked Rybet. She is such a spunky, independent character that wears her heart on her sleeve. I am also glad that it feels like her character is evolving and growing. The best thing about this book was the character growth in the prices. Their characters were expanded on so much and each one was unique and different from each other. I am glad that they did not all feel the same.
The romance in this book was on point! I just love everything about it, which surprises me. Honestly, if you would have asked me if I would like a RH book two weeks ago, I would have said no, but this book has opened up a new trope in romance for me to love. I do feel like it works because this is set in fantasy and is not a contemporary read. It also still feels a bit like of a love triangle, but I am interested in how this will play out in the end. I kind of want her to end up with all of the guys, but it is kinda weird considering they are all brothers, but I just can't decide who I like better. They are all amazing and they each have a special connection with Rybet that I absolutely love.
I just love these books! Everything about them is absolute perfection! I need book three now because this book also ends on a huge cliff hanger. I know that some readers hate cliff hangers, but lucky for us, the third book will be released soon and we will be put out of our misery. I HIGHLY recommend this series! It is so addicting and fun.
CLIFFHANGER WARNING! Seriously, what is with these cliffhangers? This one is just as bad as the one in book 1, so it’s twice as annoying now. Other than that, I disliked this one mainly because it had such a focus on which love interest the MC would choose. The whole point of reading the RH genre is that I don’t want the romantic plot to focus on whom the MC will choose.
I had a few other complaints about the book as well:
1. The book had several distracting typos, punctuations issues, and spacing issues.
2. The MC claims that Barmzig, not her, broke the curse, but Barmzig was cursed too. Wouldn’t Barmzig have broken the curse earlier if she could?
3. Sagen. Wtf is going on with Sagen? Apparently she’s the guys’ spy among the queen candidates, but I have no idea why this ambitious and cunning girl would have agreed to this, and essentially taken herself out of the running, in the first place. It’s almost as if she’s rooting for the MC at this point, and that was such an abrupt shift from what we saw in book 1 that I have whiplash.
Anyway, I’ll finish the series, but I’m getting impatient with it, and not in the good way like I can’t wait for the next book: more like, I can’t wait for it to get its act together. I do not want another full book of pick-me angst.
Here are my review and rating of the other released book in the series: (1) Imposter ★★★
I absolutely loath cliffhangers. Everything that could go to crap did and she left it that way. It will suck you in then spit you out with no warning. Happy reading. Ps it's a good book I'm just miserable over this cliffhanger.
It’s been quite long since I read the first book, so I forgot a lot. Yet, the entire plot was still bloody obvious. I This fact was obvious since the first second of book one, and it just kind of annoyed me now. I mean, the plot feels SO much like a YA novel? I’m glad she at least finally understands that they’re the princes pff. Besides the obvious plot, I liked it. The steaminess obviously isn’t YA at all, although Rybet is coming closer to the point of ‘only thinking about sex 24/7’, the point that I always hate. I think I need to take a break from reverse harems because they keep annoying me lately. I’m kind of glad that It’s realistic that people aren’t okay with sharing – Rybet seems to assume that everyone wants to fall down at her feet, but it’s obviously not normal to anyone else and I like that. I’m starting to like Zan – I definitely didn’t think I’d like him. I still like Lee and Ty, although I wish we could see some more of them – which isn’t sex that is because apparently that’s the extent of their character now. I like Zegan or whatever her name is – I’m listening to the audio so I don’t know how to write her name – she’s the one actual badass in this series so far, Rybet is starting to suck. There’s not a lot left behind of the badass she was in the last book, she now just blindly does stupid things – I mean, and I’m getting sick of her. Apparently, It’s also really annoying that I hate it when something like that is repeated, ngl.
I hope that the next book will explain some more about the world – some really cool concepts like the magic rain were introduced, and I’d LOVE to see more scenes like that! So cool. So yeah, I liked it at first, but some things in the plot annoyed me. Rybet is slowly edging into annoying as well – she doesn’t think at all and her whole personality is becoming focused on the guys’ sex. Hopefully the next book will have a bit more worldbuilding and an interesting plot!
