I have my assignment: infiltrate the Gifted government and find a way to undermine their power.
Should be easy, right?
But my magic is going haywire again, the bond to my four is straining, and I don’t know how to play the role I’ve been given.
On top of that, I’m starting to realize there’s even more danger here than meets the eye.
Someone in the Capital isn’t playing by the rules...
Which leaves just one question. Whose side are they on?
I can handle myself in a fight. But can I win the game of lies?
Get ready for more romance, magic, and intrigue in the second book of the Magic Awakened series, a Reverse Harem urban fantasy featuring one badass ex-mercenary and the four sexy-as-sin men who will do anything to protect her.
“Breaking a vase is an ‘accident.’ Killing thousands upon thousands of innocent people is genocide, you fucking Gifted psychopath!”
Sorry about that quote. It’s kind of a spoiler BUT honestly we know the Great Death happened. Did anyone? Anyone??? Believe it was caused by a non magical group. Not me. And the Gifted (I wrote the names down so I wouldn’t forget) use it to control and kill the Touched (half magic) and Blighted (no magic) it was so convenient of them to blame the “lesser” groups and use all that death as justification.
Shit goes down. Lana finally So yeah, that happens. The ring, parents, and birthday questions are answered. Like 2% into the book all of my previous questions were answered. Including all of Corin’s drama.
I’m invested and I need to know more about Jae and his father. I’m also intrigued by Akio very much. I think he puts up a front. Of all the men Jae looks like the most hurt or sensitive but I think it’s Akio. Incubus have a really bad reputation and he is constantly being put down by Lana. She keeps saying he’s using his charm on her when he’s just looking for affection. She gives her affection freely to the other three men but she never does to Akio. That must really hurt him.
The story continues. There’s this war brewing. Or continuing. Or...whatever. The villain is planning No surprise there. Honestly!!!!! It worked out so well for the bad guy the first time around why not do it again?
What bothers me the most is that stuff just happens. Out of no where. Just bam. Lana knows who did it. No evidence. Nothing. Everything just happens and keeps happening. However, it’s juicy and like I said before I’m invested now. I need to know how it ends.
This was an emotional roller coaster. So many twist and loss. It seems hopeless for Lana and her men. There is trouble on every side. I was totally rooting for her and her grandmother. I was hoping together they could start making changes to their world. At least the men and her are getting more bonding time.
My problem with this book was that it did not focus enough on her growing as a character, or growing into her magic. I also did not care too much with how easily she jumped into the Resistance in the first book and went undercover, especially since due to her past she was supposed to be pretty jaded. IDK, she really just doesn't hit me as a strong main character.
Another thing that I had a hard time with while reading was that there was almost no world building. The history behind everything was very sparse and there wasn't enough to convince me that the racism started due to this plague that some Gifted thought they non-magic people started. Why did they think the non-magic people started it? Did the Gifted think they were jealous? Was it a plague caused by a bacteria or virus? Was there any type of pattern other than it only killing Gifted people? Did every Gifted person who got the plague die? What were the symptoms? What was the country like before the plague? Was everyone equal? Were magical people already out or did the plague expose them? And many more questions like that which I feel would make the reader more attached to the story and maybe also feel more passionate about the Resistance and understand the reason for the MC's quick joining to the group.
I continue to love, love this urban fantasy reverse harem series that follows Lana and her four sexy men on their battle against the corrupt members of the Gifted. You definitely need to read the first book, Bound By Magic, before you do this one. There is a prequel (Kissed by Shadows) that gives some history on Lana (and Corin) and though that doesn't have to be read before the others I was happy that I had read it first. I can't really comment specifically about the things I loved in this second book of the series without spoilers so I will just say it continues the action, magic, intrigue and romance (things heat up a bit in this second book). The writing continues to be top-notch and at the end there is a note saying the last book will be out in November. I can't wait! 4.5 Stars
2.5 stars. Not sure what happened with this book, but it really fell off the mark from book 1. Annoying behavior from the MC, like living with someone for half a month and never having the opportunity to sit down with them to have a conversation? Really, you were afraid? Too much just felt forced. Big let down from the first book.
Game of Lies sees the return of one of my very favourite heroines. You know how people say that the sequel never lives up to the original? Yeah, this one totally does! Except for that cliffhanger at the end… SADIE!!!!!!!
Oh! No, I can’t tell you that!
Oh! Yes! No… can’t tell you that either.
Oh! Oh! Oh! You have got to read this book because I need to talk to you about it but I don’t want to tell you all the good stuff because you really must read the first book and then this second gem to truly appreciate everything that is Lana and her balancing band of men.
Man, when I grow up I want to be like Lana Crow. She is, as they used to say in the old days, “A stand-up gal!” I like her so much and I respect her character so much as well.
Let me try and do this book justice with my puny little review.
Lana returns to us having done a 0-60 from the backstreets to the boardrooms of Government. But the fighting that Lana is used to, isn’t going to do her a whole lot of good in this new world of politics and dastardly intrigues, is it? Well, maybe she’ll get to land a couple of punches to take that edge off! Politics is a dirty game after all and our girl has never been afraid to get her hands dirty for the right reasons. The trouble is that she’s still trying to figure out who is really on the side of good. For someone as up front and to the point as Lana is, this spying and acting out a role doesn’t come easy.
Lana’s magic is going nutsicles and the bond with her men (every time she calls them “my men” I get a little tingle) because she’s been living separately from them, having discovered the existence of her long-lost Grandmother (this is a little spoiler but think big picture okay?). A Grandmother who happens to be a pretty bigshot in the world of Gifted Government – so now Lana has the desire to get to know her Grandmother and more about the family she can’t really remember BUT also the fear that sweet Grandmama is dodgy as hell and one of the people intentionally making the Blighted’s lives completely miserable WHILE keeping a few of her own secrets too. This Grandma doesn’t exactly bake cookies (She’s not really on speaking terms with her kitchen) but for Lana’s sake you really hope she’s not a megalomaniacal tyrant.
In spite of the initial strain, Lana and her guys manage to use time in this book to add more layers of depth to their relationship as a group and to their individual relationships and the connections between them only gains strength and traction as they grow together.
There are so many great parts to this story: the growing closeness between the 5 that is clearly not just the result of a magical bond, the building of positive relationships with old and new friends despite the darkness and peril all around and of course, the very essence of this journey: the fighting of the good fight to see the victory of good over evil.
There are also so many sad and hurtful parts which is to be expected when the power over many lies in the hands of the few. Magic aside, the fight for equality in the face of prejudice, intolerance and segregation with the mindset that people are better or worse than each other simply because of their differences is an age-old battle that is constantly fought world-wide. In this case, our heroes are in the thick of things, at the frontlines, and the battles and the betrayals cut sharp and deep in this second installment.
And then there was the damn cliffhanger… SAAAADDDDDIIIIIEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
More ‘Magic Awakened” Greatness! Fabulous Audible Listen🎧 Game of Lies: A Reverse Harem Paranormal Romance Magic Awakened, Book 2 By: Sadie Moss Narrated by: Heather Firth
This is the 2nd book in this great "Magic Awakened" series, it picks up where the first one leaves off. This is one action packed story and i I just can not get enough of it. If you have not read or listened to the first one do not continue to read this review, go read or listen to the book, it is awesome and lays the groundwork for this story. Lana joined the resistance and this book starts off with her infiltrating the “gifted” government. She finds herself a perfect “in” or rather it found her, that being her a Grandmother she did not know she had. Beatrice is a Government official and board member. I really liked Beatrice, her acceptance of Lana, how she listened how she grew up amongst the blighted and how she just acquired her magic, her gifted ones and the ones from her bonded men. She still needs to control it better and her men are there to help, I just love how supportive and protective they are of her. It is great to see their bond and feelings for each other continue to develop and deepen. A lot goes down in this book, there is plenty of drama and twists as Lana uncovers truths and betrayals, in both the government and the resistance. I am looking forward to next book in this series, Lana must prevail! Sadie Moss thank you for this fabulous story and series.
I listened to the Audible edition, Heather Firth is a wonderful narrator and voice performer. She continues to bring these characters to life, giving each their own voice and personality as well as attitude and heart. Her portrayal of Lana is spot on, she makes her sound badd ass and you can hear her gaining confidence and strength as the story goes on. Her male voices are awesome, she does justice for each one, think my favorite is Akio you can hear his angsty attitude in her performance. Heather Firth is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another awesome listen🎧
1) Lead female fails to act like a human and make natural inquires like, for example, asking her grandmother what her parents were like or asking the mage about his and his father's deal. 2) Lead female is suppose to be contributing to the take down of the present gov't but fails to educate herself on it's structure/rules/regulations/policies/procedures/ect (she didn't even know seats were hereditary) so she can ask questions, gather information and take action effectively, despite having the perfect source and situation for weeks (instead she hangs out in the kitchen with the help). 3) Human lead male failing to act like a human and find out exactly what happened eight years ago before trusting enough to share deep personal turmoil (although besides that, that scene under the tree was powerful and moving; hats off to the author) 4) Grandmother being used as a plot device at every turn. 5) Werewolf lead male going full on creeper, including emotional manipulation, when lead female was in shock and grief-stricken.
Overall, I just feel like everything is being rushed and I am missing out on a lot of essential and affecting story which leaves me irritated and frustrated as opposed to pleased and interested.
Game of Lies (Magic Awakened Book 2) ~~ OMG 😱 this series/ book does not slow down. Not even a little. If anything, it felt like every lie, every secret, every half-truth from Book 1 came back swinging. Lana is still trying to figure out who she can trust and honestly, each guy has his own agenda… but somehow they all still want to protect her. Watching them balance loyalty, jealousy, and magic while she tries to stay alive? That’s the kind of drama I eat up.
This book really digs deeper into the politics of the magical world, and let me just say ~ half of these people need therapy and the other half need to be magically tossed into the sun. The betrayals hit harder, the danger ramps up, and Lana starts to realize she’s stronger than anyone expected… including herself. There’s one twist near the end that had me sitting straight up like, “Excuse me? Come again?!”
By the time I finished, I was fully invested in Lana and her guys all of them and absolutely ready for the next mess they were about to step into.
I would definitely recommend this book and series and can’t wait to start on the next book. If you want to know what happens next, you’ll just have to read this series yourself you won’t regret it.
I received an advanced/review copy of this book. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content and honesty of my review
Oh my gosh. This book. UGH. It was SO unbelievably good. I loved the first one, but honestly, I actually liked this one better. It could have quite a bit to do with the fact that there are more sexy times with a couple of her men than in the first one, lol, but also, I felt that the story was richer and there was so much going on that drew me into the story. I'm loving the dynamics between Lana and her men and some of the magic politics and adventures they have had me on the edge of my seat.
There are a few hardcore twists in this book that I DID NOT see coming, and for that, I have to applaud Sadie for, because, wow. She is such a fantastic writer and she weaved those plot twists into the story flawlessly.
Also, there's a major cliffhanger at the end and I'm pretty sure I read the entire last chapter with my mouth hanging wide open. Plot twists, I'm telling you!!
Lana has an opportunity to infiltrate the highest levels of the Gifted Government for the Resistance. She can identify their strengths, their weaknesses, and maybe find those who would be sympathetic to their cause. But it doesn't take long to realize that she is in over her head and that she needs her four. She stands to lose more than she bargained for.
I am still having issues with this series. I would like more character-building, character growth, and relationship focus. I still feel like we are being told emotions rather than feeling them with one exception in this book and it had nothing to do with Lana and her four. There was no magic development at all. Lana is supposed to be so powerful that her magic couldn't be contained in one body. Yet, she can't do anything naturally and isn't being taught how to wield her power. I feel little attachment to the characters, their relationship, the Resistance or the Gifted. This makes it difficult to be as invested as I like during a book. Plus, I would like to see Lana nad her guys get at least one small victory in this fight. So far, they have been outmanned, outmaneuvered, and out-magicked. Frustrating.
This one wasn't as good as the first. I felt like too much was going on and not enough pages to fully work through everything. Still was a good read and definitely kept me interested for the next one.
My favorite part was seeing Lana and Corin working out some issues. I wish she would explain more about what happened to him, so he could try to understand, but I just don't think this book was long enough to flesh out all the relationships. Fenris is still the great comedic relief while still having a personality outside 'funny.'
Outside of the romance, I am liking the development of the government and the resistance. Especially the government. Lana is going to bring down the establishment! Haha! She actually might though. She is powerful, and so are the boys, and she know exactly how people who are not powerful are being treated. I just really love that dynamic.
I hope book three we will get to see Jae breaking out of his own control a little. And I am ready for more and more and more Akio. I don't think we know enough about him to justify how much I love him.
Tense, Steamy & Suspenseful!!😕🔥😱 (Read using Kindle Unlimited)
This was a really good follow up to book #1. Lana is now living newly found Grandma & Gifted Council Representative. Their relationship is slow going but is starting to make progress 💕
Her four bonded men end up moving in to her Grandma's house with them after a rather large disaster with her unstable magic!🙈💘 Beatrice, although old, takes their odd relationship in her stride 👍✨The hotness factor beats up especially between Corin and then Fenris with Lana 🔥💘🔥
There is heartache, tears & betrayal for our intrepid resistance fighters in this book. Poor Lana really emotionally battered 😢 The continued & constant blatant hatred by each group for the other is awful & is made worse by the overwhelming power the Gifted hold over the Blighted, it's a sickening state of affairs!!😔😷😡
Audio book review Book 2 in the series . The author picks up where book 1 finished . The plot and characters get stronger . The story has lots of action. Warning you there is a cliffhanger. Heroine is Lana . Lana is still not sure how the other world , the world of magic works. It’s new to her . There are some scenes that will have you hold your breath wondering what next. Lana will need her game face on to know who she can real trust and who will put a dagger in her back . Lana is not use to her men , when she calls them hers she gets a tingle and she knows that they are hers . Lana also finds out who her grandmother is , Lana didn’t know that her grandmother was gifted and how some questions need to be answered . Her men know she is theirs but they need to show her how to make the bond stronger
I honestly did not know where Sadie Moss was going to take Lara's journey after Book One. But this book just really keeps you guessing, in all the best ways! Once I started Game of Lies, I could not put it down and just had to keep going, it was THAT GOOD!
We have high emotions that are tested to their limits, and steamy moments between Lana and her four gorgeous men. People who were once friend are now foe, and foe is now enemy. Or are they? We have plot twists and new issues. It's such an up and down ride, but it definitely has you craving more!
"I was theirs. They were mine. And I would do anything to protect them."
**I received a complimentary copy of this book for review consideration**
The novel lost me shortly after I started it, and even after I forced myself to keep picking it back up, I couldn’t get beyond chapter 20. There was just too little happening in the learning department. I detest main characters who aren’t curious about themselves. I mean, honestly, you’ve just found out that your grandmother is still alive after you’ve been an orphan your whole life, AND learned that you are Gifted after thinking you were Blighted your whole life, and you don’t ask ANY questions about your family or your power for MONTHS? No. Just totally absolutely unbelievable. Unrealistic. Stupid. Asinine. I cannot respect that character. Also, the skipped ahead just to see how book 3 starts, and yes, I predicted whodunnit. So over this series.
This book picks up right where book 1 left off and I was thrilled to start it. The 4 men and Lana have a plan. She is going to infiltrate the capital and give them the information needed to change everything. This story was great. There are a lot of things I loved that I cannot tell you about because it would be spoilers for book one.
The narrator did a great job with voices and feelings. I can honestly say, I've enjoyed these two audiobooks more than most because of her. I really loved the new ladies in Lana's life. There is such a difference between the classes that it is super sad. There were several twists that I didn't expect at all. Now I cannot wait to see how this all turns out, as it was left on a cliffhanger!
This was an incredible sequel! Lana recently discovered that her grandmother is a Gifted with a seat on the council. Her most recent mission is to infiltrate and access information to give the rebellion an upper hand in the fight for equality. Lana’s Magic is going crazy again with the strain of her bond of being separated from her four guys and there’s also a mole in their midst- who can they trust? I love getting to see Lana learn more about the Gifted and a little bit of her family and it’s past. Her grandmother was so sweet and definitely had an open mind when it came to the Blighted. Her relationship with Corvin and Fenris heats up in this sequel and things also start to get better with Aiko and Jae. This book was filled with heartbreak, betrayal, steam, and revelations that left me wanting to see how it all ends! Heather did another amazing job with this narration! She managed to bring all of Lana’s emotions to life with her performance and kept me engaged until the very end. @AudiobookObsession *I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
This series wasn’t for me. I read the prequel, and skimmed the rest of the series.
1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.
2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.
3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.
4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.
5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.
Game Of Lies by Sadie Moss is a reverse harem paranormal romance that I listened to on audio narrated by Heather Firth. This is the second book in the Magic Awakened Trilogy.
Sadie has done an amazing job on this series so far and I cannot wait to dive into the third and final book in the series Consort of Rebels. This book does end on a cliffhanger but it was no surprise since it is part of a trilogy.
Heather did a great job on the narration. She really knows how to bring a story to life.
I would recommend this book if you like Paranormal/Fantasy Romance, Slow-Burn Romance, or Reverse Harems.
Title: Game of Lies Author: Sadie Moss Format: Audio Narrator: Heather Firth Genre: Paranormal Romance, suspense Standalone: Nope Part of a Series: Book 2 of the Magic Awakened trilogy POV: Lana Steam Level: Steamy at times but not too graphic 5/5
Game of Lies is book 2 of the Magic Awakened trilogy and boy does it end on a cliffhanger! I could not stop listening to this story. The suspense, intrigue, backstabbing and secrets are insane. You don't know who you can trust and who will survive. Game of Lies is the quite the roller coaster, full of twists and turns. Great story telling.
I received this audiobook for free from Audiobook Obsessions. This is my honest and voluntary review.
Look, I love the guys. Especially Fenris. But I was just having trouble with the lack of relationship building. They just got so friendly so fast and we didn't even really get to experience it.
If there's one thing I want in a book, it's to see the relationships develop. I just can't continue reading right now because it's almost a bore now that they're suddenly so close and friendly.
I want to know how the story goes. What happens. But I'm skipping more paragraphs than I'd want to if I was actually going to fully read the book.
Maybe I'll come back and finish this series sometime but for now, it's sadly a DNF at 44%.
I really enjoyed this second book in the Magic Awakening Series. Lana is trying to get to know her new found grandmother and learn as much as she can about the politics to give to the resistance. However; things aren't always as they seem and the nicest of people can't always be trusted. Her relationship with her guys is growing and she is realizing how much she needs them and they her. I love Lana's character. She doesn't give up but keeps fighting for what she believes even as her beliefs are changing. The cliffhanger is killing me and I am looking forward to the next book.
Wow, I did NOT see that coming! Lana has come to accept her responsibility as gifted in the government and the opportunity it gives for change. Unfortunately she has a hard time navigating the lies and half truths of politics and ulterior motives. She does get closer to her 4 albeit slowly. There is healing with her and Corbin, but still a long way to go with a couple of the others. Ending on a cliffhanger, Lana has to get herself out of quite the pickle she is in, and cut the head off the snake. The snake she didn’t see coming. Can’t wait for book 3!
OMG this book blew me away, I was hooked from the start, and riding an emotional rollercoaster and hanging on to the edge of my seat. Just when Lana starts to settle with her long lost grandmother - who accepts her four men & quirks, Lana suffers a horrendous loss, and tensions build around the city increasing danger to the blighted. As Lana and her men start to uncover the mole, she is betrayed by someone close and held captive! What a cliff-hanger, I need the next book, another fantastic narration by Heather Firth.
This second book of "Magic Awakening" continues where the first one left off. The characters are being more defined and bringing in more that will keep your interest and curiosity peaked. We have the fight against good and evil going with surprises around every corner. Lana is starting to come into her own and what a journey it is turning out to be. This one just keeps getting better and better.
Games of Lies is the second book in the Magic Awakened series. It’s emotional, a little steamy, anger fueled, plot twists and get ready for vengeance. Lana and her men are kept on their toes throughout the book, especially since someone is always a step ahead of them.
*****************************
Lana is on a mission to get information from the Representatives and other Gifted government officials for the Resistance. Lucky for her she’s able to stay undetected by staying with her recently found grandmother, but that also means she’s has to stay away from the four men she’s linked to - Fen, Jae, Akio and Corin. Lana’s magic is haywire without the connection between the guys, but hopefully they don’t need to stay apart too long.
