In 1965. the Historical/Architectural/Landmark committee was formed to advise the Herkimer-Oneida Counties Comprehensive Planning Program on significant historical and architectural resources in the two counties. The committee, composed of architects, historians and interested citizens, compiled an inventory of over 600 landmarks. From 1966 to 1971, field documentation, photography and historical research continued on the sites. In 1971, a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts made possible the preparation of the survey for publication. The preservation of our historical and architectural landmarks is a challenging task. Concerned citizens must be alert to the destruction of the best of our man-made heritage by demolition an by neglect. We hope that Wood and Stone will encourage our residential and business communities to realize the economic and cultural benefits of historic sites, buildings and areas, and to take an active role in planning for preservation.
