Hij houdt Eddies koninkrijk al een tijdje in de gaten en is van plan om de ontevredenheid van de boeren te misbruiken!
Als de keizer een grote nepdraak bouwt van een koe, groen crêpepapier, pluizige pantoffels en twee verjaardagstaartkaarsjes, om de boeren bang te maken, weet Eddie dat het tijd is om zijn eerste stiekeme plan ooit te verzinnen.

Andy Riley is geboren in 1970 te Aylesbury. Momenteel woont hij in Londen. Hij heeft al heel veel grappige dingen geschreven, zowel voor de televisie als voor films. Hij won er zelfs prijzen voor: BAFTA's en een Emmy. Voor de televisie werkte Andy mee aan het scenario voor Oma Boef, De jongen in de jurk en Robbie het Rendier, allemaal van David Walliams. Hij heeft meegeschreven aan films als Gnomeo and Juliet en The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists. Andy houdt heel erg van cowboyhoeden en kan geweldig goed FOE HOE HOE zeggen. Het boek gaat over Eddie. Eddie is geen gewone jongen. Hij is een koning, met een troon, en zijn eigen harnas, en een kasteel met geheime gangetjes en zo. O ja, en de gemeenste en meest kwaadaardige man van het universum is zijn buurman. Dat wordt natuurlijk echt geen spannend verhaal zo, met actie, chocola en happende krokodillen... Of wel?
Mijn zoon van 9 jaar (Miguel) mocht leesambassadeur zijn voor dit boek. Het begon al speciaal dat het boek als pakketje aan hem geadresseerd was. Dat vond hij helemaal geweldig. Hij heeft toen zijn huidige boek aan de kant gelegd en is meteen begonnen met dit boek te gaan lezen. Hij vond de voorkant echt cool en mooi! Hij heeft het boek echt heel snel uitgelezen zo leuk vond hij het. Hij is heel erg benieuwd naar het volgende deel! Hij vond het verhaal spannend, grappig en de afwisseling tussen tekeningen en de tekst vond hij goed gedaan. Hij geeft het 5 sterren! Ik heb het boek na hem gelezen en ik kan het eigenlijk alleen maar met hem eens zijn! De voorkant is prachtig met dat goud en de Kwade Keizer zwart. Ik heb tijdens het lezen regelmatig gegrinnikt. Door het einde wil je eigenlijk meteen door met deel 2! Een paar moeilijke woorden worden uitgelegd behalve één, maar door de tekst kun je wel raden wat het ongeveer betekent. Het is echt een aanrader! Ik geef het ook 5 sterren!

Recently, I have seen this book everywhere – on television, in newspaper reviews and on kids websites – so obviously Hodder Children’s Books feel they have something worth pushing and I was keen to read this with my daughter and see whether it was worth all the hype. Author Andy Riley is an Emmy and Bafta -award winning scripwriter, who has written cartoon books and comic
strips, before turning his attention to children’s books.
At around 200 pages, with loads of black and white illustrations, short chapters (and even a theme tune to learn to play) this has loads of appeal for children of approx 5+. It has particular appeal for reluctant readers, as it is a fairly easy read, without too much text on each page. However, of course, to make it work, it has to have a good story and I am pleased to say that this certainly does.
Edwin is a nine year old boy who just happens to be a king. Ruler of Edwinland, he spends all of his pocket money buying chocolate for the villagers, while Minister Jill really does all the ruling. Then, one day the money runs out and Edwin finds he is danger of being invaded by his evil arch enemy, Emperor Nurbison (who of course has an evil laugh, “Foo Hoo Hoo Hoo!”). You can, of course, tell he is evil by his scary castle, complete with narrow path and lots of bats…
Can King Edwin come up with a sneaky plan to defeat the Evil Emperor Nurbison? Can he get hold of some more pocket money? What follows is a madcap story, with fantastic characters and a book which really cries to be read aloud. Even better, it looks as though King Edwim will have more adventures – we look forward to reading them.

I got a copy of this book from the publisher in Norwegian, and the following review is posted in Norwegian!

Jeg ble lovet at denne boka skulle være morsom, men jeg kan ikke si at jeg syntes den var det. Humoren er bok mer tilrettelagt den yngre garden, og kan virke veldig barnslig hvis den blir lest av litt eldre barn.
Derimot er bildene nydelige og morsomme, viser karaktertrekk til de forskjellige veldig godt! Og det vil være lett for barn å drømme seg bort i disse bildene, kanskje lage sine egne fortellinger!
Det er en fortelling som går fremover, men også med en del «tomrom» som er litt treige å lese.
Passer nok bra for de som akkurat har begynt å lese!

Review in Norwegian as I read it in Norwegian
Jeg fikk denne boka i posten fra forlaget. Jeg leser ikke mye barnebøker, men noen ganger er de greie, ettersom de er så lettleste.
Denne boka var et unntak, samtidig som den ikke var det. Den var lettlest nok, da jeg leste hele ila en time, samtidig som den var litt tung. Det var nemlig en hel del frem og tilbake story—messig som virket unødvendig.
Noe av det er derimot greit, da det gav en moral.

My son read most of this, not I, but I enjoyed the tale. We particularly enjoyed the song that goes 'stick your toes up your nose' and regularly sing this to one another at bedtime.

Nine-year-old Edwin is a compassionate and generous ruler, but he's not very good with money. When he overspends the kingdom's coffers on chocolate for his subjects, the evil Emperor Nurbison seizes the opportunity to take over the kingdom by fomenting rebellion among the peasants and frightening them with a dragon. The dragon is actually a cow disguised with candles and various articles of clothing, but frightened folks don't look closely when they are scared. Edwin, his right-hand woman, Minister Jill, and Megan the Jester manage to escape Edwin's castle when the Emperor appears, crossing over into his lands, and pretending to be interested in joining his army. But all is not as it seems, and just as their disguises are revealed and they are about to be thrown from the castle into the bottomless pit, Edwin gets the urge to scratch his rear and saves the day, thanks to quick thinking on the part of Jill. Packed with humor and some wry observations about human nature, this is the start of what promises to be a popular series. I'm undecided as to whether I enjoyed the story line or the large illustrations best, but I will happily confess to being completely amused by the notion of mail that goes by peasant post. Sometimes I suspect that's how some of my own mail is delivered. Read the book to see what I'm talking about. In the interest of full disclosure, I should also confess that I love chocolate almost as much as Edwin and loved him all the more for his sweet addiction.

This book is supposed to be funny
but I didn't think it was at all. Example,
it talks of sticking toes in your nose,
itchy bums (which ends up being a
somewhat major part of the story)
& to me just stupid things I most
definitely would not let my kid
read.
The pictures go well with the book
and the plot keeps moving making it
easy for kids to be entertained, I
however was not but that is just one
opinion. The book also repeats very
obvious things and says things that
really don't need to be in the book
in order to move the story along.
The characters had interesting
appearances and went well in the
story. It is a small, simple book
but I just didn't enjoy it due to
the style of humor used. The
humor overall ruined the story
for me. But, as always, I shall
pass the book along for
someone else to enjoy.

Dit is zoveel beter en grappiger dan boeken van David Walliams, is althans mijn persoonlijke mening 😀. Koning Eddie komt in de problemen als hij al zijn geld heeft uitgegeven aan chocola voor de inwoners van Eddieland. Dat is het moment waarop de kwade Keizer Nurbizoon gewacht heeft. De boeren uit Eddieland komen in opstand en Keizer Nurbizoon neemt listig het kasteel van Eddie in. Gelukkig weten Koning Eddie, minister Jill en Nanda de Nar te ontsnappen. Droge humor, goede vertaling van Edward vd Vendel, enorm veel grappige illustraties en een verhaal dat, hoe bizar ook, toch van begin tot eind klopt. Ik heb er zelf smakelijk om zitten lachen, maar het is ook geschikt voor jongens en meisjes vanaf 8 jaar.

Dit was echt een superleuk boek, ik ben blij dat ik hem heb geleend uit de bibliotheek. Het enige jammere, en ook vaak de reden waarom ik niet boeken lees die vertaald zijn naar het Nederlands, is de vertaling. Er waren wat dingen die niet lekker klonken, namen die je gewoon had kunnen laten staan.
Maar verder lag ik dubbel, koning Edwin (sorry, ik noem hem bij zijn Engelse naam) was een goede koning, een dappere, hij heeft alleen nog veel te leren over het beheren van geld (arme Jill).
De slechte keizer was inderdaad heel slecht, maar ook best een sukkel.
Het boek is ook gevuld met gezellige, hilarische illustraties die het boek nog veel leuker maken.
Maar verder lag ik dubbel, koning Edwin (sorry, ik noem hem bij zijn Engelse naam) was een goede koning, een dappere, hij heeft alleen nog veel te leren over het beheren van geld (arme Jill).

I read this to a six-year-old boy and he loved it. It was fun for me to read as well, which is great as otherwise story-time can be a pain.
A funny book with wacky pictures, silly character names and even music at the back to learn the evil Emperor's striding theme.
A fantastic book for kids just getting into reading; I've been recommending it to other parents.

I read this over a few days and really liked the story. The story is an adventure/mystery and I think my friends would like it. My favourite character was King Edwin. He kept saying things like 'Seize him' and kept buying sweets and chocolate. I liked the pictures and would give this 5 stars out of 5. The ending makes me want to read book two.
I read this over a few days and really liked the story. The story is an adventure/mystery and I think my friends would like it. My favourite character was King Edwin. He kept saying things like 'Seize him' and kept buying sweets and chocolate. I liked the pictures and would give this 5 stars out of 5. The ending makes me want to read book two.

With Andy Riley's humor, this is such a fun book. King Edwin is a boy king who loves his subjects, and they him. But the Evil Emperor is out to steal his kingdom.
Lots of deadpan humor in this story, and the accompanying illustrations just add to the fun. Read it. Trust me.

I buddy read this book with my son. It was so funny and adorable. We've already picked up book two and can't wait to get into it. We loved King Edwin and the fact that he learned a great lesson at the end of the book.

The jokes about Megan the Jester's weight are unnecessary, and the overall attitude towards "the peasants" is uncomfortable. There are better, less problematic humourous books to rec to kids instead.

Dit boek is heel interessant voor kinderen die niet graag lezen de letters zijn heel groot dus minder zinnen.Je komt niet zo veel een prent tegen maar af en toe wel.Er zitten verschillende soorten types van karakters in dus ik raad het zeker aan aan kinderen.Groetjes Thibaut

Really good book, made my 4 year old laugh in many places and had some jokes I even chuckled to. It's a bit like Monty Python for kids. Will be reading the next in the series!
