An unseen community, troublesome abilities, unforeseen captivation…

Detective Nate Hansen thought he knew the shady side of the nice and touristy town of Ashport. But when a woman is kidnapped in broad daylight, he’s faced with a hidden community he knows nothing about.

The only connection to the crime is the sometimes consultant for the police, Maggie Evans, who’s also a suspected criminal in Nate’s eyes.

Ordered to work with the elusive Maggie to find the kidnapped woman, Nate begrudgingly does so. But Maggie doesn’t want help, nor to be arrested. And she clearly has something to hide. Something that will change everything for Nate, in more than one way…

Faced with kidnappers, an irregular FBI agent, things that shouldn’t be possible, and unexpected temptation… will they be able to trust each other long enough to solve the crime?

So the blurb made me believe this would be an action packed romance.....it is not action packed.

The writing ability is fair but it definitely did not capture my interest by chapter 10 I was getting bored and still had 6+ hours left in book one let alone the 3 following books

I’ve dropped this series and may continue it at a later date

Even though i liked the plot as well as the main characters, nothing pulled me in to read it... I thought this novel would be packed with action and romance as well as emotions, but for me it fell short of all that. So i struggled to read this novel to the end. Which left me sad that this type of novel is not for me, but might be for some one else.

Book #1 of 4 in The Ashport Mender series.

Rating and Review

Rating: 3.75 Stars

* Note: This is more of a general review of the series as a whole.

A paranormal series reminiscent of the tv show Haven.

Each book is action-packed and features a diverse and well-developed cast of characters. There were a few times that I found myself frustrated and unable to understand some of the author’s choices—mainly in regards to the Affiliate Community‘s practices—but my negative emotions never outweighed my positive feelings for the books.

Would I recommend this series as a whole? Yes.

Outsider is a paranormal/mystery/romance with an interesting storyline and characters. We are introduced to Maggie Evans when she is brought in to assist with the interrogation of a prisoner because of her uncanny ability to get results. Detective Nate Hansen is irritated and suspicious but when he spots Maggie at the scene at the scene of a kidnapping he's determined to get answers. Through Maggie, Nate discovers a world he never even knew existed and the more he uncovers, the more he sees Maggie in a new light. As the book blurb says "Faced with kidnappers, an irregular FBI agent, things that shouldn’t be possible, and unexpected temptation… will they be able to trust each other long enough to solve the crime?"

Despite the slow start, this book is a really good read. The plot is original and the writing is good. I liked the characters. There are some sex scenes but this book is more paranormal mystery than romance. I am definitely interested in seeing where the relationship goes in book two.

„Outsider“ (The Ashport Mender Series) is an excellent series starter, that blends mystery and paranormal romance tropes with a solid plot and very characters.

Ashport is the nice kind of town tourist are drawn to until a woman gets kidnapped in broad daylight. Nate Hansen, the detective assigned to the case, is not particularly keen on working with Maggie Evans, the special consultant to the case is barely another criminal in Nate eyes. But as the plot develops Nate will find a lot more about the things going on in his “nice little town” as he ever suspected.

The story arc relies more on the thriller aspect as on the romantic part of the plot, which give the book a depth that is rarely found in “paranormal romance” books. Both MC are very well crafted, their chemistry undeniable from the very beginning, Nate’s scepticism and Maggie’s abilities complement each other in the search for the culprits. As a reader we are privy to both POV with makes the whole even more interesting to “watch” as it develops.

Already looking forward to the next book in the series.

G.K. Lund is a new author for me, but based on Outsider (The Ashport Mender Series Book 1) this is an author I will need to read more of. This book is well done on several levels, as a suspenseful thriller and as a paranormal tale, certainly, but to me what makes it is how the paranormal community is described and how a hard-nosed non-paranormal wold deal with discovering. Both that detective, Nate Hansen, and the paranormal consultant he is forced to work with, Maggie Evans, are very well drawn. I’m looking forward to seeing their relationship develop and hope future books are as good as this one. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.

I’m going to do something I never do and start with the thing I didn’t like first.

Flip-Flops of POV between two people. Normally not a big deal and to be honest, it wasn’t. I enjoyed it immensely. What I didn’t care for was having to guess if I was in Hansen’s or Maggie’s head before I started reading. This could’ve been solved just by their name being placed next to the chapter header.

What I did like: Everything else! Well thought out plot, richly developed characters, and enough detail to guide my imagination without hindering it. Solid world building and character development.

Authors take note- this is how you write a story!

The first book in the series called The Ashport Mender Series and I want to read the next book. A well written story that grabbed my interest from the very first page. This is Maggie Evans who has special talents and Detective Nate Hansen's story. There is suspense, drama, danger, kidnapping, villains, super naturals, and romance. I received a copy of this book and I am voluntarily reviewing it.

Great start to a new series. Maggie is a Mender and has lots going on in her life. I loved Maggie as she fought through everything. I enjoyed her interactions with Nate who is a detective. Lots of action as the two work together and great chemistry. This book had something happening all through to the end and I loved it. A little bit paranormal with tons of interesting characters. I look forward to reading book 2.

Fun Read

This novel is great fun, well developed characters and environment, with a story that is way out there but yet seems normal and plausible. For the first time in years. I did not tire of reading Outsider and, after pausing my reading, actually looked forward to getting back into the world of Margaret and Hansen. Usually I quit a book about a quarter the way through: not this one. I have downloaded Book 2 of the series and look forward to reading it.

Hansen's partner is shot and he thinks Maggie has something to do with it. She does but not in the way he thinks. Can he learn the truth? Will she get him to believe her? Will he trust her? Does his partner survive?

It was an enjoyable book, but not exceptional. It didn't automatically make me want to read book 2, although I probably will eventually, since I have the boxset.

I enjoyed this enough that I would read more. The world is interesting and well developed. Some elements did not mesh as well with my taste but it's a solid story.
