The saga of the Round Table Knights continues- five hundred years after the death of King Arthur.
When the ruthless King of Visi-Gaulia attacks vulnerable townships in Gilleon over mine rights, he has little in the way of opposition, with Gilleon's forces weeks away. It seems no one can thwart him. None except for The Merlin.
With only nine of his most elite knights and a suicide mission bordering on the impossible, Merlin engages King Jason and his army of thousands in the ultimate game of cat and mouse.
Fighting a severe war of attrition, Merlin is dealt an even harder blow when one of his own men is captured by the enemy. What will he reveal when he is inevitably tortured and interrogated?
And even more alarming- an army of Orks are slowly making their way into the enemy encampment. To what purpose?
With The Battle of  Ages raging on, three helpless children, orphaned by the attacks on their village, await the outcome- And Pray for a miracle that may never come.

When I was growing up, I never had aspirations of writing. Even as an adult, I never longed to write the great American novel. I believed I simply didn’t have the patience for it, though I had good writing skills. I worked hard to get into college, but once I was there I did little in the way of furthering my academic career and nothing in terms of building any future career. My greatest achievement in four years in college was successfully building a bong out of a hand held vacuum cleaner.

Like many college dropouts, I bounced aimlessly from job to job. I was a roofer, a fast food fry cook, a framer, a bouncer, cashier, housecleaner and even a would-be actor. Nothing enriched my soul or brought me any closer to happiness. I yearned for something more. I just didn’t know what it was.

In 1995, I reached a low point in my life. Fresh out of jail from a recent burglary conviction, I found myself homeless, unable to afford even the basic necessities and was forced to move back home to Idaho. I did regain some self-respect and finally got on my feet and once again became completely self-sufficient; but I was still pretty miserable.

I moved back to LA again in 1996 and after a number of unsavory and unsatisfying pursuits, I moved to Sacramento in 1999 to be with my then girlfriend, whom I later married. Like many couples, the illusion of true love obscured in a cloud of compatibility and chemistry eventually dissipated and reality set in. We divorced amicably enough.

By my late thirties, a relentless story had been steadily gnawing its way into my head in the form of dreams. An elaborate, rich, diverse character haunted me, begging me to give him life. Finally, I did just that. I began to write. The very first book I wrote of the character was not great and it was panned at a couple of writing conferences I attended.

Before I even got to the end of that book, the prequel to this amazing saga began to take on life. I knew I had to write it from the beginning. The story evolved as I wrote and continued to delve deeper into this world. This series is a labor of love and I hope you find the world as enthralling as I do.

DNF at page 25

I realize, of course, that 25 pages isn't a lot, especially in a 394 page book. I didn't give this book a lot of chances. But I found it a muddled mess of mythologies. So far I've already encounter Biblical lore (Archangel Michael and the fallen angel Lucifer), Arthurian lore (Merlin and Morgana) and references to Greek mythology (Hades).

But I'm giving up because it's so badly in need of editing. There are misused words, odd punctuation, sentences that don't make sense and just stuff like the word children being used 14 times in the first two pages. This book needed outside eyes on it badly. At this point, I'm giving up and find all the detail-less five star reviews suspect.

First off: this book is NOT for kids. It is extremely gorey and contains various rape scenes in which the author goes into great detail that make it borderline smut. That, in and of itself, does not necessarily make it a bad book, it's just that the only time the author decided to go into any detail was when he was killing/torturing/raping a character. But character backstories? Emotions? Thoughts? Na...let's just gloss over all that.

This makes the story and characters rather one-dimensional and therefore makes all of it forgettable. The few characters that ARE interesting and well fleshed out only show up in the beginning, and are either disposed of early or just forgotten until a minor mention in the end.

The overall plot is a stereotypical David vs. Goliath battle in the form of the Brotherhood of 10 has to take on an army of 9,000. While some of the ways they tackle this issue is pretty cool, I couldn't help but feel like the Merlin was this unstoppable force that can't be outsmarted/outmatched in any way. It was about as exciting as reading about a steamroller going over concrete. The villain is another one-dimensional character who feels like he is wronged and wants to conquer everything to take back what is his. All too familiar. All too boring.

Finally, this book is in dire need of some major editing. There are various typos and sentences that just don't make sense. But the most frustrating of all was how absolutely REDUNDANT this book is. Want to play a drinking game while reading? Drink every time a character gets shot/stabbed in the neck, or is "dead before they hit the ground"--you will be wasted by the first 50 pages.

The Brotherhood of Merlin (The Brotherhood of Merlin, #1)
by Rory D. Nelson

I wish I could say I was enjoying this as it had good reviews (which is the reason my reviews are always harder on the author than others, I guess). But I got about 4 chapters in before virtually throwing it at the wall -- something I really coudn't do since it was on my Kindle and it wasn't the Kindle's fault!.

There were so many things I didn't read far enough to understand, like why is what seems to be the main character or at least the main character's dad Lucifer? Why, after 4 chapters has the only mention of Merlin been of a figurine called "the Merlin." Why haven't any of the Round Table Knights been mentioned other than in a very general way which had nothing to do with the action in the book at that point? But most of all, was this book originally in another language, and if it was, did the author mistakenly hire the same translator as FB uses to translate posts?

Very stilted language, which I'm assuming is to invoke the alternate universe setting, convoluted sentence structure with outright errors -- those were the final straws for me. I'll move on to something else.

BTW, Goodreads, why isn't there a choice of "didn't finish" along with "want to read," "currently reading," and "read?" I wanted to just put MY shelf (threw it at the wall), but that didn't change my progress status. I object!

Quite disappointing

The description of this book made out sound very interesting. And it has promise. But it is badly written, with some parts that are almost incomprehensible. The plot wanders, and there is far too much fixation on rape and bloody deaths.

I will not be buying any more books in the series.

This book has potential. If it had been done by one of my former students, I would give it a B for effort, but an overall grade of C-. A proofreader would have been of great use. There were way too many misused homophones ( putting a similar sounding word in place of the proper word ), which could also be called mispelled words. Everyone seems to die by having their throat cut/ taken out by an animal tearing it/ etc. All females were raped. Way too many made up words. There was very little true continuity in the plot. In short, it could have been improved. Once again, it reminds me of the sort of content I was given by my inner city seventh grade students.
For a "free" book, it was acceptible, but not really worthy of paying "good money" to purchase.
I have the second book in the series that I will eventually read. I wish the writer well in subsequent books in the series.

If you like virtually non-stop, graphic, sadistic violence (both physical and sexual), you will find it here. I really did try to get through it because I was intrigued by the idea behind the storyline but it was too much for me. This really needs a disclaimer or a rating of R+ for the content. There were also some glaring continuity errors in the story. I got this book when it was offered for free. So glad I didn't have to pay for a book I will not finish.

UPDATE: I did finally finish the book.

Poorly written, poorly conceived.
At first I thought the way people communicated was supposed to reflect the idiom of the location in the book, but it quickly became clear that the poor use of language was not part of the story.
The opening chapter introduces characters who should be part of the larger tale, and then kills them all (and does so in a fashion that makes no sense within any context).
I honestly cannot recommend that anyone read this book, let alone buy it.

What a load of rubbish. Very badly written in what the author believes in "first person", but it is not believable as the characters experiences things that no human could possibly know unless he lived through that same experience and these are usually extremely gruesome detailed explanations of how they died and how it felt to breath their last breaths and feel the pain they felt. I feel that the author filled pages by describing death in ever more gruesome ways and with as many weird weapons as he could think of.
In some ways, the storyline was difficult to follow, with whole characters leaving me lost, so that I had to keep going back to find out who they were and on which side because in some ways, there was no good or bad because the good people did bad things too. Some characters were forgotten about. I gather the author is forcing us to read his series to find out about these, but it just feels like he forgot them and could have given more time to who they were and then carry on storylines in further books.
Including reference to Jesus Christ and ancestry was completely unnecessary. A story could easily have been written without this in it.

I really liked this novel, although I admit, it took me a while to finish it.

It started out in a mesmerizing way, with a blend of the Bible's most known figures, the legends of the knights of the round table, and of course, Merlin. It's also a great reminder of Stephen King's The Gunslinger. So, on the whole, it has potential for a really, really fabulous epic fantasy.

What I struggled with, is the sheer violence depicted in it. It's gory, no holds barred, and once I could get past that, I found that some bloody scenes are redundant so I more or less skipped them. A better proofreading wouldn't hurt either.

As I haven't outgrown my love of once upon a time stories, despite my getting on in years, I really liked this novel, and look forward to reading Book Two. It is a promising series that I will definitely follow.

Boring!

Started out well, great premise/idea but then became nothing but war games and porn - perhaps written for high school boys to jerk off to? It was overwhelmingly descriptively gorey - to what purpose I have no idea. Just page after page of arrows through necks it became mind numbing. I admit I did not finish the book because you never got to find out what was going on with Merlin or the angels. Not enough here to entice me to read the next bunch of war porn.

Violent, storyline solely to emphasize violence, written for 13 year old boys needing constant supervision. Quit reading 1/3 way through 1st book.

I like anything to do with Arthurian legends, I like historical fiction especially medieval times or westerns, I like “creature features “ or animal familiars, so when I saw the blurb and cover(s) for The Brotherhood series I thought alright this will be awesome ... then I started reading and it all fell apart.
I hate giving negative reviews and I will say up front
that the premise, the setting, the idea is great. But the writing is stilted, words mixed up or just incorrectly used, sentences don’t make sense or sometimes seem totally irrelevant to the story, ridiculous amount of redundant repetitive repetition, and even more ridiculous descriptions( he was accurate to five hundred yards with an arrow?.....the boy was trapped under 2000 pound horse? Blood seeps in spurts? A wolf retracts her claws and then catches a fish with her claw? Not even gonna go into the Alpha and Omega thing with the wolf pack.
I still think there could be a good story but needs editing and if someone is going to write about something I(just my opinion) think they owe it to their readers to research what they are writing. I hope it gets better as it goes but hard pass for me right now, too big a to be read pile for me to short circuit my feeble brain struggling to make sense out of what should ne a leisure read.

I won this as part of a Goodreads giveaway.

I couldn't even get 50 pages into this book before I gave up.

From the lewd description of the wife in the first chapter to the dialogue, I wanted to gouge my eyes out.

I have never written such a negative review about a book, but then again I've never read a book that has irritated me this much. I just can't.

Give it a go, if you want.

Merlin and the Brotherhood will face the Visi-Gaulia army to protect the people from their brutal king. The army of Gilleon is too far away to protect the people, but Merlin and nine other men will use tactics that the invaders aren't prepared to counter.
I really liked this book. I chose to read it after reading the description and my curiosity was peaked by a future for King Arthur's Knights of the Round Table. The characters are well written and complex with enough narrative given to each one to be helpful in understanding their motivations.
Now, in my opinion this is not a book for the faint of heart. There is a lot of violence, but when in the context of waging war isn't unexpected, however, the descriptions are very graphic. This violence includes the rape and torture of sometimes the very young, so keep that in mind if you decide to give this book a try.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

Good read

I am a beta reader for book 2 of this series but I purchased book 1 so I could start at the beginning of the saga.
I gave this book 4 stars because I had some difficulty following all the characters in the story line. There is also very descriptive violence throughout & tho it does explain some of the story i don't really think all of the deaths had to be so graphic. I found myself speed reading though many of those parts because they did not add to the story for me.
I am looking forward to reading book 2 but am hoping there might be slightly less descriptive violence.

One would say that 10 against 1000 is pretty bad odds, but 10 against 9000, is almost unfathomable.
With Merlin's abilities, his 9 brothers cause major mayhem and mischief, showing how guerilla tactics can outwit the largest forces.
Again, it is graphically gruesome and even the good guys are killed, although their death or torture weren't in vain.
The idea and deviations from real time and place, allows a whole world concept to be accepted as fact by the reader.
Yes, interesting, but I cannot see many young females reading this series, although the young males would glory in the blood, guts and gore.

Rated X for content
This book is intense. There is rape, war, and it is graphic. Normally, I am not a fan of rape and don't care for horror. This book is intense and I enjoyed it and had a hard time putting it down. I had to see what would happen next. The characters are well developed and there is a lot of them. It wasn't too hard to keep them straight. Merlin is pretty amazing and his brotherhood is very devoted. I could not watch this if it were a movie but at least with a book, I could enjoy the story and skim the really gross parts. The story flows well. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a hero saving the day with a bit of mystery and a hint of magic.

I was fortunate enough to win this book from Goodreads. This takes place about 500 years after the death of King Arthur. Jason, a tyrant of Visi-Galia, feels he has unfairly treated and blames the township of Gilleon. He gathers 9000 knights to attack the township. Merlin knew this would happen, so he gathers 9 knights to go battle with him against Jason and his forces. It is up to Merlin and his knights to save Gilleon and the prisoners slated to be sold in slavery. You will have to read the book for the exciting ending.

Stark Raving Mad

This book is one of a a rare breed of brotherhood that protect their country by any means and are willing to die for it. A true adventure of true special forces at their best. But the following of the conversations are sometimes hard to follow due to the a people not properly being identified.Overly a fantastic read. Looking forward to second book immediately

This is a good Dark Fantasy for those who like this sub genre. It has lots of actions and some thoughts in it that challenged the way I look at the world. It is a good read for those older teens and those adults who wants their fantasies dark and mysterious. I don't want to say too much for I don't want to give away the plotline or the joy of reading this book.

Good premise

The story idea is intreging but the style made me feel like I was reading a script synopsis, also while I don't consider myself a prude, I could have done with out the S&M/rape scenes, they really didn't seem to add much to the story, that couldn't have been done less explicitly. I am however interested in seeing where this story goes from here.

The characters are flawed but interesting. Be warned that the book is filled with graphic violence and is not recommended for very young readers. Having said that I was fascinated by how a small Brotherhood could systematically vanquish thousands of soldiers. If you enjoy action-packed battles, you might enjoy this first of a trilogy.

A very excellent read

I saw this book and was very intrigued by it. Always loved Merlin and the supernatural. This book is an excellent read. I continually wondered what was to come next and really enjoyed the story and plot. Cannot wait to read more. I really want to know what happens to Dante, Sylvia, and all the rest of them.

Brotherhood of Merlin

I enjoyed the plot and that is the only reason I want to continue reading the series. The violence is at times obviously impossible. And the profanity is unnecessary and pointless in the extreme. Only the characters which are believable keep my interest. The “C” word is disgusting, overused and I won’t get caught up in another book by this author.

A unique storyline, and a good start to a series. Don't miss it!

This is a good start to a unique series. I have read a few of the other books in the series and it's companion series and finally decided to go back to the start and get the whole experience. Well worth it! Don't hesitate to pick it up, you won't regret it.

So this book should be rated XXX

The title and cover fought my eye and reading the preface, the story sounded good. But after the first few chapters, it went downhill and in porno. Should have a little note about the adult content 2 young girls peing on each other whips and bondage!

unexpected cowboy magician

I know from real life experience that certain things aren’t possible even with magic… with that said, I like the book, it’s fast paced, calculating and refreshingly different. It might be too good for a sequel. The editing was bad. Too many typos. Now part two and three have their work cut out for them

I love fantasy novels that create wonderful new worlds and characters full of life (Tolkien, Brooks) and now we can add Rory D Nelson's Brotherhood of Merlin. Really good book that I strongly recommend for any readers of fantasy.
