Unexpected
I find the Cicurel family fascinating, as they were one of the most powerful families in Egypt at the time.
I anticipated a greater focus on the family and their business dealings.
I was hoping to learn more about Jewish families during this era and what life was like for them as a community. However, Mr. Ronald only offered a brief glimpse, which is understandable since this is his own biography.
After reading for a bit, I began to enjoy the story, sailing on waves of memories. Gradually, I felt more and more connected to the family, their life and their hardships.
That scene, where they had to flee the country and leave their father behind, not knowing what the future held or what became of him, was both terrifying and heartbreaking.
They had spent their entire lives in a country that was supposed to be their home, where they had built an empire, only to be expelled and mistreated. It was truly awful.
The man had to start over at the age of 68.
I truly wish Salvator had lived to know he was welcome back in his homeland.
He deserved so much better.
It's worth mentioning that I truly enjoyed his writing style, the expressions he used, and his personal insights about the world. It's surprising he didn't consider writing as a career, as he has a remarkable way with words.
I admire his perspective; he comes across as a wise man with whom I'd love to discuss life. He has a truly unique outlook.
I felt the warmth, joy, and kindness in his words, which made me feel as though he were my grandfather. The strength his father displayed in starting over at over 60 is inspiring. His feelings of being lost and torn, unable to fit in, resonated with me deeply, as I can relate to that struggle.
I was discussing the book with my Mom, she was deeply moved by their forced departure and the loss of their earnings. She recalled their once-grand empire, mentioning Grandma's pride in Cicuril's luxurious fabrics and designs.
This book will be my refuge; I know I'll return to it again and again, seeking the wisdom of Mr.Ronald and the strength of Mr.Salvator.
This book was truly heartwarming and felt like a hug.
