Spending Fall in Cornwall wasn't what Jennifer was expecting, but then, neither was a centuries-old mystery and a present-day killer.
A fortune in jewels. A little girl with a mysterious past. Townspeople who could be friends or could be foes.
When Jennifer agreed to discreetly snoop for details on properties and antiques for her globe-trotting boss, Gable Landon, she didn't realize that she may have bitten off more than she could chew. A simple job undercover suddenly turns deadly when her presence digs up things better left dead and buried.
Clean language, and only rated PG because hey, there’s a murderer running around in this book.
I've been writing and making stories in my head as early as I can remember. In third grade I came home, set my lunchbox down, and told my mother I wanted to be a writer. Luckily, Mom was supportive.
I've been a published author for a while now, under different names and genres, but the thought of writing about a small coastal town in Oregon, and about its loves and mysteries and holidays and people has been with me for years. To be honest, I am a bit scared to dump those ideas onto the written page, but hope you'll enjoy getting to meet the people who inhabit my imagination.
In real life, I'm married with kids, live on the West Coast of the US, and own a hobby farm just outside of my favorite small town. I love to travel, and can often be found strolling down a windy Oregon beach, holding onto the string of a high-sailing dragon kite.
Another great little read. Okay the mystery part is so, so but the human aspect of is awesome. Love the way she stands up for herself. Her next assignment is Cornwall and trying to get details of an old Manor house. The owner is anti social and a loner. Can she get anywhere? Figuring that her best choice is to get to know the locals she starts there. With her puppy as an ice breaker she meets the eccentric people that call the village home and slowly but surely she starts to fall in love with both the place and the people. Shame that her meeting with the owner left such a bad taste. Until she sees him deliberately struck down by a car. As he has no-one she takes over his care. Only to find the man accused of running him down in an open grave at the back of the manor. Can she find out what is really going on? Will her employer get the manor or will the owner have different plans?
I loved this author's Ravenwood series, so was excited to see her new series was a spin-off featuring one of Ravenwood's characters. I was very disappointed in Book 1 of this series - nothing much seemed to happen until, suddenly, toward the end, a body was found. A couple of pages later, the culprit was caught. There was no real lead up to the murder & very little explanation of why. I gave the book 3 starts for effort & decided to try this book, hoping it would get better. It doesn't. If anything, it's worse. Again, in the last few pages a body is found. Again, only a couple of pages later, the culprit is identified. And again, little to no lead up to the murder. I won't be reading book 3.
I really hope Jennifer and Orly get to spend some more time in Cornwall in between world travels. I really want to know what happens with the dance and nude yoga classes, Mr. Mantlewood, and the apple orchard. My ebook Kindle Unlimited edition of this story needed some copyediting to fix some strange sentence lags--it was like some rewriting happened, but the old part of some sentences didn't get deleted.
I chose this rating because I love reading all of Mrs. Dean's books. I am so glad that Jennifer is globe trotting. I get to visit all the countries that she travels to plus get to know some interesting people with quirky personalities. I can't wait to see what she gets into in her next assignment. Keep Jenna employed.
The author needs to do more research if she's going to set books in England.
Not entirely sure what a "popover" is, but I suspect you're unlikely to be offered them in a Cornish pub.
Also, English people do not "visit *with*" their friends... Just two of the more egregious examples of American speech being inserted in English mouths in this book.
This is such a friendly, cost murder mystery. Such a joy to read, I hope the author writes more in this series. Jennifer is likable and nice, I enjoy looking over her shoulder. I'd like to thank the author for making sure that Jennifer, isn't a nosy parker. Thank you. Read and enjoy!
Jennifer arrives in Cornwall to try and obtain a falling down Manor house for her boss Gabriel. She noses around for information. Meets the crusty old man who owns the manor and stumbles across a corpse. Overheard conversations and nosiness about the presence of a man on a property that doesn’t belong to him lead to a solution on the corpse. I’m not really into this series.
Jennifer is sent to Cornwall to see about buying Mantlewood Manor for Gabel. She meets a bunch of quirky people. Someone tries to run Mr. Mantlewood over with a car. Jennifer had stopped to change a flat tire and sees it happen. She offers aid to Mr. Mantlewood and this gets her into the house to look around. Really enjoying this series.
I really enjoyed this book. I can't wait for the next one. I love this new series. There were plenty of twist and turns in the story. I sure didn't figure out who did it until the end. Thank you Carolyn.
The character, Jennifer Peetman, and her side kick, Orly, become so likable that one finds it hard to lay Carolyn L. Dean books down. During the year we all have had, these books have provided a taste of hope, goodness, and normal ness so needed.
Carolyn Dean has created characters that don't need to curse a blue streak to tell a story. Her plots are twisty enough to entertain on a rainy day with tea and biscuits. If you like mystery and visiting exotic locales, the World Traveler series is for you.
I love these books they are really well written and enjoyable to read the characters are really good and her description of a small village is brilliant.
Lots of fun...cozy mystery but different from the "normal" cozy. A bit shorter than I would prefer but easy to move on to the next in the series (p.s. I love Cornwall!).
