Ryder has been my light in a hurricane, but even I know the sun can't shine all the time. This journey of mine only leaves me two choices and neither satisfy me. Do I continue on my path towards retribution for my family? Or do I focus on the first man to crack my ice-cold heart? He's the only man who has ever made me feel safe at night; the first to truly accept all of me- scars included. I'm at a crossroad, and no matter which way I turn, I'm fucked. Ryder or retribution? This life of mine isn't a fairy tale, I know I can't have both.

"You are completely thrown, slammed, and brutalized by Harlow. Seriously, get these books!" Ramblings from beneath the sheets blog
Harlow Stone is a thirty something contemporary romance author and avid reader from Ontario. One cold winter day she couldn't find the book she wanted to read, so she decided to write it herself.
She published her first book in January 2015 and immediately knew the story wasn't over. One book turned into a trilogy and the trilogy spun off into a series.
Harlow made the top 100 list on Amazon for her first book in The Ugly Roses Trilogy and hopes to break more lists in the future.
Harlow —a former construction worker— likes to stay busy. When she's not busy working on her books she can usually be found reading someone else's or working on her house.

This was better than the first book! Concealed Affliction was a little more focused on Elle and Ryder's relationship. Elle is also slowly learning her new self. Even though she's hiding, she still manages to meet friends that deeply care for her.
Ryder has a secret that has him going to Chicago multiple times. When Elle finds out why, she gets into a 'Fuck It' mode. She leaves Ryder and faces her demons.
"It's called retribution, you sick fuck. And it starts now."
The mystery of her past is still there, but now she has help from her friends. She also discovers she has more enemies. *Sigh*
There were a lot of surprises. I wish the 3rd book was out! I can't wait!
I love Elle and her "potty mouth" and think it's funny when people are like, really? Does she have to swear so much. Hell ya she does and leave her the F alone. I love Harlow's writing style and love that Elle isn't wishy washy. LOVE Ryder, and I want one of my own. Norm is a fantastic dog❤️
I was lucky enough to get an ARC of book 3 and don't doubt that it will be fantastic.
Following book one I had high expectations to see the story unravel in a way that would pay justice to the main heroes. Well I must say I was totally disappointed. The story idea is really good and reasonably well developed but the main characters and their emotions, behaviours and interaction so so poor, at times off putting.
The worst of all was Jay/Elle literally I could not dislike her more half way through. I'm afraid for me the author turned her into bitter, angry, self centred, at times mean, ungrateful and blinded by her predicament bitch. At the end of book one I thought she found her pace with Ryder, I could understand her behaviour, emotional turmoil because of what she went through all fine. There was justification for all this. But in book two it was all pushed to unacceptable extremes. I could not sympathise with her despite her ordeal, to a point I just wanted to stop reading, I just could not stand anymore her outbursts of childish behaviour (me, me ,me). She pretended to be independent, strong etc. but really had not progressed in her investigations until she found Ryder, whom she just treated so poorly. It did not help her case that the story is said only from her point of view where she repeats again and again the same dilemma. We do not really get to know Ryder how he feels, what he thinks about Elle there are literally two short chapters with his voice, well not enough to give him justice and be objective. Based on that he is way more likeable. The build up in their relationship very erratic ending with them back together at the nd of book two.
There are also inconsistencies in the timeline as story progresses the author does not pay attention when describing scenes. Events may start in the morning and should finish little later but suddenly its next day or evening etc and the vent concludes. It's unclear how long Elle spent in the cottage with Ryder few months? Six months?. That spoils the story telling quite a lot as it shows little attention to details, which actually separate brilliant story from OKish.
So, I was excited to read book two but my enthusiasm has deflated now and I'm not sure what to expect from the third book could it be worse then this? I gave 3 stars simply because I liked book one and gave it 5 stars.
Holy cliffhangers!!!! I don't even know how to review this book. Awesome, amazing, phenomenal, heart wrenching, there's not an adjective out there that can do it justice! Ryder in all his hotness is trying to hold onto Elle, but she definitely has her own demons. We get to know so many more wonderful characters before it all comes to a head and then BAM!!!!! Harlow Stones writing is absolute perfection! On to book 3!
Jesus effin hell..what did I? .... Seriously I lost count of how many times I wanted to throw my book (but its pretty and signed so I didnt) but I wanted to! Ryder ..... sweet Jesus Ryder I wanted to both cheer him on in his pursuit of Elle and kick him in the bits for being an asshole ! Elle is such a strong character I love her. Harlow Stone is quickly becoming one of my go to authors.
Waaaaaay over did pet names, cringe worthy. Main women annoyingly stupid. She was suppose to be stubborn and strong but came off as immature and selfish.
Elle has known one defense for the past year and that is run. She has let her guard down where Ryder is concerned and she has maybe even let herself feel and hope. She knew better, everyone she gets close to leaves at some point.
To many people are beginning to know her secrets and the only way to keep them safe is to go back and confront those secrets. She is determined to go alone and has made it very clear to Ryder that she can't deal with lies. She doesn't want his protection. Elle/Jayne goes to her friends that she willing left behind to keep them safe.
Ryder doesn't listen very well and sends his men in silence to be there is she needs them. They are all trying to find the pieces she needs to be safe. Unfortunately it seems it might be Ryder's personal problems causing her more heartache and danger. Will he be able to keep her safe and will she ever understand.
Hopefully she can hold strong and keep fighting. Fighting for her life, for justice to be served.
The twists that book 2 take us on are unexpected and just add to the depth of the story. She has undying love and friendship from more than she ever expected. Let's hope it enough to keep fighting.
Ms. Stone has my mind racing with what is going to happen in book 3. Leaving us with a fade to black that could have many different outcomes. Diving into book 3 now!
OMG!!! The second book just made all the difference!! I just finished the second book in The Ugly Roses series by @harlowstone . I could not put it down! The questions I had about Elle/Jayne's past were answered. The character development was spot on! I fell in love with the secondary charter Denny. I want more of him and now need to look at the authors books to see if she made a spin off story for him. Ryder's character pissed me off but then redeems himself. Harlow wrote the most twisted, convoluted, fucked up story for Elle/Jayne and it works. This woman goes through more shit than anyone I ever read about. She is not just strong, she is smart and selfless. I don't know how she survives the crap home that is her life. Side note: I love how the author doesn't make her some sitting duck waiting for her attacker to come get her. She ends up training MMA style with Brock and Denny, and she builds herself up to be able to protect herself if she is attacked. But the worst happens (ending spoiler) . . . . It's a guard in the jail she is at that is attacking her and she knows if she fights back, she won't get out. Cliffhanger at the end.
I can't wait to read the conclusion of this story.
I love this book, I wasn't sure how it was going to top Frayed Rope but it did. It's one hell of an emotional roller-coaster. Concealed Affliction is full of twists and OMG moments that it literally has you on the edge of your seat the whole way through. Concealed Affliction gives you a chance to dig deeper into the background of Elle/Jayne and her relationship with Ryder and 'the guys'. Sometimes...Okay a lot of times I wanted to bang Ryder and Elle's heads together but that made me want to read on more to find out how it ended with them.
It's been a while since I have binge read a series and I think the Ugly Roses series is a pretty fantastic one to do it with. Concealed Affliction had me hooked from the first chapter as did the first and that cliffhanger???? What! So glad book three is already out otherwise waiting for the third installment would suck. A fantastic series and amazing writing by Harlow Stone.
This book continued the saga of Elle trying to get here ducks all in a row. The romance which is so steamy deepens and growing passions drive both partners more and closer. One by one the heroine demolishes or solves another demon, another buried secret till there are none. As a healing Elle revisits her friends who gave her courage and support to survive. When the couple finally know they cannot live apart they find they are indeed pregnant. From that point on the book is not about headstrong, determination, defiance or anything but just living, enjoying their friends, and watching their family increase. Sorta the happy ever after ending after so much violence, pain, humiliation, arguing and resolutions. Bravo all three books are well done. Good surprise ending.
Concealed Affliction is the 2nd book in The Ugly Roses trilogy and they must be read in order.
I loved Frayed Rope, the first book in this series and dived straight into book two once I finished. But it has nothing on this one. Concealed Affliction was so much more... everything. It is a heart wrenching page-tuner that pulls you in and won’t let you go. It’s an emotional roller coaster ride on a journey of twist and turns, ups and downs, and survival. Nothing will stop Elle from finishing what started so long ago. She is devoted to finding out the truth to what destroyed her life as she once knew it.
This is a wonderful continuation of this series. I can’t wait to read the third and final one.
DNF. The first book was good ! 4 stars good! I wanted to see how things progressed in the 2nd book , but I just could not stand Elle enough to finish the book. She has got to be the most annoying, self -centered, dumbest character ever written. I get angry at female characters that come off as doormats because well, pride and dignity …. And I love me a strong , feisty , kick ass FMC, but Elle is none of that . She’s childish, immature, stupid and thinks she’s smarter than she actually is …. It was so bad, that while I enjoyed the story , I couldn’t bother to read it anymore .
When I finished the first book I immediately got the second! What a fantastic read Harlow, thank you so much. Love the characters and the strong bitchen women Jay/Elle is, and Ryder and his team are just sweet sexy beasts, holy hell! Bought book 3 and it’s like a f***ing roller coaster ride of adrenaline.
The story continues in this, book two of the series. Ryder and Elle (Jayne) are burning up the pages with the chemistry between them, the banter between them is awesome. Can they sort thru Elle's case, find the missing pieces and find their way back to one another? I am looking forward to the next and final book
Concealed Affliction is book 2 in The Ugly Roses series. It takes off where book 1 ends so it is neccessary to read in order. The suspense continues and the plot thickens. I was so wrapped up in the story, I screamed no when it ended. Definitely going to read the last book now. Read to find out that not all is as it seems.
Elle is still running, and everything is coming to a head. Ryder has been keeping things from her, despite knowing all the details concerning her. Elle is hardening herself further from the pain, she knows she will have to face her past and she needs to be ready. Will Ryder tell her the truth? And is there a Twin hiding somewhere?
Give this series a try, you won't regret it. I enjoyed this series. It deals with harsh subjects, but the main character is strong and you feel for her so much. Ryder is just alpha male hotness, and is the best pick for her.
This is an intense, suspenseful, gut wrenching story. It has everything I love in a story. It has great writing, interesting and realistic characters and non stop action. I loved every minute of this story and can’t wait to dive into the next book to find out what happens to Jayne and Ryder.
I cannot wait to see how this all ends.. I do admire the way Harlow Stone spins a tail...can literally feel Jayne's pain, joy, sorrow, anger, fear, and now I am waiting for retribution....on to book #3!
This book was even better. It picks up right where book 1 ended. Both characters are stonger now. And the suspense picks up. I wanted to throw my kindle several times. I love Ryder and his character the most. Wish I had my own Ryder at home, LOL :) Can`t wait to start book 3.
A very good extension of the first book! It seemed so random though that I think at chapter 23 we finally hear from Ryder. The whole first book and all the way until that point in this book we don’t hear from him and then boom all of a sudden a chapter is written from his perspective.
Concealed Affliction (The Ugly Roses #2) by Harlow Stone
Ryder has been trying to get Elle Davidson to open up to him. He wants her, but he knows if he pushes to hard, he will spook her, and she’ll run. He can’t risk it, he can’t take losing her, and it scares the hell out of him. When he has to push her away to protect her, it eats him up. There has never been a woman who has made him care this way about her. He certainly doesn’t plan to let her go. He will stop at nothing to keep his woman in his arms, his bed, and his life. If only she would let him keep her. If only she would keep him. Elle has allowed Ryder to get too close she knows it but she can’t seem to help to want to be near him. He keeps the nightmares away and she can finally get sleep. When he discovers her scars, her first instinct is to run. That’s what she does best. He tries to convince her he wants her scars and all and she almost believes him until his past shows up and Elle decides its time go. Can she have a second chance at happiness and a life with Ryder or is she too broken and damaged for anyone to want?
This is book two in the Ugly Roses Series, you must read book one to understand book two. Book two picks up where book one left off.
I absolutely love this couple Ryder and Elle are great together. So when they mess up and hurt each I found as a reader of their story it hurt me too. I sensed the deep emotion from both of the characters. That’s damn good writing Ms. Stone!
Ryder Callahan might be one of the best book boyfriends like ever! He was protective alpha male to a fault but still gave Elle her space to let her heal from the traumatic experiences she has had in her life. Did he seem perfect? Yes. Was he perfect? No. He messes up a few times and nearly loses the girl. Elle has a hard time trusting people she is used to being on her own and doing it all for herself. So, when she finds people like Ryder, Brock and Denny that help her through her journey of self-discovery it was heartwarming to read.
About 35% in the mystery part of the series was definitely keeping my interest. The romance angle of the story kind of dropped for me here. I wasn’t too happy where the author went with Elle and Ryder’s relationship at this point. However, as I read and found out how it all unfolded, I realized that it all had to be part of Elle’s journey back to Ryder. I really, really loved Ryder as a male character and I thought he was so good for Elle but she kept pushing him away. Those times I have to admit I almost wanted to stop reading. Not because it wasn’t good but because I was so mad at Elle, so for me that is a sign of a great story. The author had me feeling emotionally for these characters.
I don’t want to say too much because I hate spoilers but the mystery angle of the plot was really well written. Even though sometimes I wanted to punch, Elle in the face because was so damn stubborn I could not wait to find out how her story unfolded. When a writer makes me feel mad, happy and sad for a character it shows the characters have depth and I am invested in their story. This unique series has it all a hot ex-military security company owner, a strong willed sassy woman that makes him crazy, a bunch of drool worthy background characters like Ryder’s friend/employee Denny. Don’t even get me started on the rest of Ryder’s employees apparently being drop-dead gorgeous was a job requirement to work Callahan Security. There are many twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. Not to mention the very steamy sex scenes and the emotional charged tender ones.
Great series definitely worth the time to read, highly recommend. There is the harsh subject matter such as rape, and physical violence so if these are trigger for you this is not the book for you. This reader is hoping Denny is getting to tell his story next.
I am just blown away with this series that I just don't know where to start - this second book has literally left me speechless!
So, it picks up right where book one left off and so you REALLY need to have read Frayed Rope in order to continue with this series. That being said, and if you read my review for book one, you will realize just how excited I was to see Elle and Ryder's relationship develop and see where Harlow Stone took this series and I just didn't see the bombs she dropped coming. I won't spoil the plot for this book because I hate spoilers but let me just tell you that you need to prepare yourself for one hell of a roller-coaster ride of emotions.
My new favorite book boyfriend suddenly became a man I thoroughly hated and what happened to Elle and how much she keeps taking just stunned me. At one point I was so annoyed with Harlow that she had taken the story and their relationship where it went, that I was beginning to hate her too. I had visions of me writing a stern email full of disappointment and harsh criticism of how she completely threw me for a loop and destroyed my capacity to love her characters and her novel. But, oh my god does Harlow Stone know how to knockout a reader and keep them second guessing and on such a wild ride of emotion that she will eternally have my fandom for her novels.
One minute I was cursing and shouting foul language at the book and the next in floods of tears or smiling with the shear relief of the joyous respite thrown in by characters such as the return of Laura and Jimmy, Elle/Jay's best friends and family. But you know what, Harlow manages to transfer these feelings to her readers as they are Elle/Jay's experiences. What she goes through, thinks, feels and expects we too share this with her. We are made to feel like our world is unsafe and so shattering and devastating that we can't help but feel the full force of Elle/Jay's life shattering experience which I think Harlow has aimed to do throughout both books. Then Harlow skilfully and sneakily pulls us up out of our desperation and depression and shines a light on the love and support that Elle/Jay has and we begin to feel safe in the world again.
Denny is just such a strong presence and support throughout this novel that he has gained a place in my heart and if he isn't evolved more in the final book I would certainly love to read more about him and his life in book of his very own (HINT, HINT Harlow!). Harlow however doesn't let me down with regards to Ryder and let's just say by the end of the book when more is revealed I am back to feeling the love for him wholeheartedly.
There are so many great parts to this book and I realize that none of my favorite lines can be added to a review as they would give too much away but there are definitely some very memorable one-liners in this book as with the first one. When Jay takes a trip with Denny one night (you will understand where when you read the book), my heart was ripped open with the words written. I cried so hard with Jay that I had to take a few minutes away to compose myself so I could actually see the rest of the words!
In true fashion the ending once again leaves us on such a cliff-hanger ending that I am SO glad all three books are out already....I'm not too sure I could have waited to see how the finale plays out had I read this series as and when it came out! And that is where I am off to go now.....book 3 is calling and a late night/early morning is certainly on the horizon!
Harlow Stone has managed to sweep me away with this series and I can only advise this a must read. You don't even need to think about it, if you have read Frayed Rope, you should be already hooked! Keep reading, this series just keeps getting better and better!
~*~ Obsessed by Books copy given in exchange for an honest review ~*~
"Black flowers for a black heart."
This is book two in a three part series and they must be read in order. Oooooh where to start? Without spoilers this book is contains more revelations regarding what happened down in that dark and secret basement where Elle was tortured and stripped back to nothing more than a primitive need to survive. Survive long enough to exact retribution for the innocent lives lost in the obsessive hunt to possess her. Who was her stalker, why does she feel she is still being preyed upon?
After letting Ryder seep in through the cracks in her armour, the lies he has uttered haunt them, driving a sedge between them. Embarking on a journey of self discovery Elle is forced to reassess what she really wants. Doing what she has become so good at over the past year, Elle runs. Using the time away from the man who has broken down her walls, Elle starts to let people back in. Conversing with her neighbours and building tentative friendships especially with Brock. She is blind to how truly special and endearing she is regardless of the horror she has survived, her inner light has not been diminished. Part two is more Elle's story. She grows throughout this book, discovering who she is now. Able to make peace with her past and come to terms with what happened including her part in it Elle accepts that road ahead is not going to be easy.
Ryder has a mountain to overcome. Setting himself up for a fall not everything is as it appears to be. Wanting nothing more to release his inner caveman and run away with his woman to keep her safe she beats him to it and runs from him. Ryder is one determined soul...and although he is an arse at times he is a pure soul. He is a balm to her festering wounds and soothes the trapped beast beneath her scars.
Book two is ...I was speechless. Blown away. It's well written, developing the characters and plot line so that their story was a living entity in my consciousness. Unable to function until I had consumed every word I needed to know! Obviously as this is a book two in a three part series there are more questions yet to be answered but the twist, I did not see that coming...scumbag! Fantastic.
