Wren's Song #2

Silent Captive

Rate this book
Wren is caught in the clutches of three dangerous Alphas, each with their own selfish designs.

One wants pleasures only an Omega can offer. Another desires affection, yet gives only cruelty in return. And the last—and by far most dangerous—he craves love, but has no idea how to return it.

Silent Captive: Wren’s Song Book 2 is a dark, sinister Omegaverse Reverse Harem tale for those with twisted tastes and a passion for unabashed bad boys. Complete power exchange dominates these pages, as do THREE smoking-hot Alpha antiheroes.

Uuuuurgh. So this is my first review. Hi.
description

So, why the 1-star review you might ask. Well... I think most of Addison Cain's readers enjoy really dark romance... but this wasn't romance. At all. A good counter argument to that would be that the book is filed under "dark fantasy" on Amazon and called a "dark, sinister Omegaverse Reverse Harem tale for those with twisted tastes and a passion for unabashed bad boys" in the book description. So there's that. Calling the three alphas "bad boys" is a stretch, though. (The beginning of the book also comes with this warning: "*This book is intended for adults only and contains scenes featuring total power exchange which may make some readers uncomfortable.") So no mention of any romance, truth be told.

description

But I digress. SILENT CAPTIVE (WREN'S SONG, #2) doesn't contain any more severe or detailed warnings than any of her other books, so here I'll add a list of the sexual content and some plot details you might find of interest:

When you, as a reader, feel like the best course of action for the heroine (or main character) is to jump off a cliff and die, you know something's up. That was at least what I felt like when reading about Wren. I wanted her to die, because her arc is so very miserable and painful, and there is no light at the end of her tunnel. But wait!, you might say. This is a daaaaark romance novel; there're not supposed to be flaring disco lights and unicorn sparkles and sh*t. Well, yes. You're right. I, too, wondered: Why didn't I enjoy WREN'S SONG?

REASON NUMBER #1: Concerning the romance – or lack thereof

Like I said: This is not a dark romance novel, not in my book. And that's perfectly okay, if that's your thing. I do, however, consider all of her other novels to be romance or contain elements of romance. I even consider her short-story CATACOMBS, featured in the anthology WHEN THE DARK WINS, to be a hundred times more romantic than this. And WHEN THE DARK WINS clearly states in its description: no romance, only darkness, no HEA, yadda, yadda, yadda. And I loved CATACOMBS to bits. Even though it's really dark and contains many of the same sexual elements as WREN'S SONG. My only wish was for it to be longer. I also love all her other works. 5 stars all around.

The reason I don't like WREN'S SONG is because the Hs or the heros, or the alphas: Caspian, Kieran, and Toby, or whatever you want to call them...
Don't.
Give.
A.
Sh*t.
About.
Wren.
There, I said it. They're not as obsessed, or enamored, or even all that territorial over Wren compared to the other alpha heroes in Addison's works. They like f*cking her – for the time being – and the way she smells. Aaaaand that's about it (for the most part). Case closed. I thought in the first book that they were only in denial about their feelings for her, but Alas. They obviously don't like the idea of bonding, because they think it'll make them weak. But they also don't find her all that special or irreplaceable, compared to the other omegas in their establishment. Why isn't the book about Rosie (another omega) as well, then? How would they react if Wren died, or she killed herself or the most likely scenario: They accidentally killed her?

#2: Character development

There really isn't any. Character development, that is. Which was pretty much what I was hoping for, since I thought the alphas' feelings towards her would change from the first book. Book number two here, is mostly just sex from beginning to end. I didn't particularly find the sex scenes appealing, personally, due to a) situational factors (Rosie, Wren, what's the difference?) and b) too much sadism – at least relative to how little they care for her, I guess. Like I said, I loved CATACOMBS, sooo. We did see some very interesting character development for Wren at the end of the book, but we still, ultimately, ended up back on square one.

I feel like you would really love WREN'S SONG, if, while you were reading ALPHA'S CLAIM #3...

#3 Wren as a character

"Wren had spent a lot of time pretending since she’d been cast down into the mud. She was good at it. Pretend life wasn’t so awful. Compartmentalize. Survive."

Wren's an albino omega.
She's mute
She's "defect".
She smells good.
She's in her early 20s?
She cares about her two adopted boys.

The only thing standing in the way of Wren and the Grim reaper is her love (and omega instincts) for her two adopted boys, as addressed in the first book. I actually find her really interesting as a character, but I also found myself irritated by her feelings for her boys, because they kept her back; she becomes a very passive character. And. She. Doesn't. Speak/communicate. I never realized how much I appreciated Shepherd and Clair's conversations until now. Jeez. She alludes to a special someone who helped her in the past, and that peaked my interest, I'll admit.

#4 Reverse harem and what's a Alpha/omega dynamic really about

So. Reverse harem. One female, several males in one relationship centered around that one female. I really like reverse harems. It can make the power exchange more pronounced or vice versa, makes the female feel really special/wanted/rare, you have more males with different personalities and sexual preferences, the sex scenes and relationship dynamics can become a lot more interesting. Et cetera. So I was really excited for this series, needless to say. But it wasn't my cup of tea, unfortunately. Because it correspond with the criteria (I didn't know I had) for liking reverse harem in the first place.

When it comes to alphas and omegas, we can take a little look at the world building. Cain is truly the pioneer when it comes to the M/F alpha omega genre, and I have yet to find someone who holds a candle to her in this sub-genre. I personally think that in a vacuum, Wren as an omega acts as a omega and the alphas behave like alphas, but when they meet... something just feels off. It's a very different dynamic from her other alpha/omega novels, in my opinion. Because I feel like I'm reading a story about just any other omega who's being ****ed by some alphas. In her other books, there's this need and obsession and protectiveness, hand in hand with some violence and disregard of their omega's free will. Wren is sick and wounded throughout much of this book, and Caspian, Kieran, and Toby didn't care all that much. I sort of wished that had escalated more and she's almost died, or something. That would have been interesting.

In conclusion, this wasn't my cup of tea – but that doesn't mean it can't be yours! And that's totally okay, if it is. I just think Cain's readers shouldn't dive into WREN'S SONG with the same expectations they had for her other works. A lot of people left 5-star reviews, and that's great. I'm happy Addison Cain's becoming more popular, and that's she's such a productive writer.

My 1-star review reflects my personal opinions on this book, but also the fact that WREN'S SONG has been split into three very short novels, which is really ****ing irritating, and a cheap marketing trick. I read this book in, like, two hours. They're too short, is all I'm sayin'.

I don't know if I'll be reading the next and final installment. Probably not. I never imagined myself NOT wanting to read an Addison Cain novel, let me tell you that...

P. S. A part of me feels like it's a little bit too cruel to leave a 1-star review on one of my favorite writer's books. The writing is okay, the grammar's on point. And so one, and so forth. But that's a given for me. And I really didn't like it. I regret buying it. And I definitely don't want Cain to write books with similar relationship dynamics in the future.

Oh, how much further down this depraved rabbit-hole can poor wren even fall as she is taken and used for these selfish alphas pleasure.
All with there own personal agendas and this one is even dirtier than its predecessor: I definitely need to scrub my eyeballs clean with some bleach after immersing myself in this purely decadent filth and oh my the language used here by our alphas it was so shockingly disgusting but also so hot, horny and heavy too.
This one was definitely not easy reading: it really went above and beyond and at times pushed the boundaries of what I am comfortable with.
A real mental undertaking where to accept this in its entirety you kind of have to throw your own morality compass far out of the window.
I will say it again this series is so not a romance in any shape or form.
This is pure exploitation of an omega who will do anything to protect her boys even at the expense of her own self-respect.
You will most certainly despise Caspian Kieran and Toby I know I did.
Out of the three Toby despite his strange perversions is the one that I am warming to slightly he just seems that touch kinder than the rest of his pack also if sharing and indulging in more than one female is an issue then be warned this story wallows in its filthy mire of sexuality and there is absolutely no shame when it comes to these boys indulging in their baser instincts.
Silent Captive smashed and obliterated my walls dragging me kicking and screaming out of my comfort zone: this is dark dubious consent with a side serving of humiliation and this author just does this so darn well.

Honestly, I don't even know what to rate this, so I've gone for a 3.

If we were going just off pure technical ability Addison's writing is first-class. My heart tore for Wren - rage, pity, jealousy, betrayal, I felt everything on her behalf.

This book is extremely not a romance. There are OW galore and Caspian and Kieran are distinctly not very attached to Wren. As someone who got used to Shepherd and Jules's possessiveness, this was an unpleasant shock.

I really could not have pictured deciding that Toby was my favourite. But now he is, inasmuch as any of the three can be a favourite. I wish Wren had a bit more backbone, even as much as Claire or Brenna (is that her name?) but that's just not her style.

I'm going to have to read the next (undoubtedly super-short) instalment because I have GOT to know what happens next, but weirdly I don't seem to be deriving actual pleasure from what I'm reading.

I finished this in an afternoon, all the while wishing I was in Addison's head - and kinda glad I wasn't. This is an incredible view into madness, desire, jealousy, rage... All the feels - except happiness and peace. It's stupendous and a bit shattering to read.

First off, DON'T read this if you're squeamish. Or averse to more than the average dose of dubious consent in your books. Don't read this if you're expecting a happy ending because there isn't one. A wise reader will check reviews before they read a book. Be a wise reader instead of an idiot who reads books they won't like then rates them poorly when they should have known better. I'm putting this on top in the hope that some of the more sensitive readers will see it.

Wren is, and remains, the strongest female character Addison has ever written. While she is bound to some degree by her biology and instincts, she still possesses enough strength to take tiny bits of pleasure when they come her way, grasping them with both hands lest they escape. And when she finally explodes, the damage she inflicts is tremendous. One fault in this is that I would have loved to see that scene from one of the alpha's POVs. I'm not going to spoil it, but Ms. Cain, if you read this, we want to SEE the alphas hurt, love. Throw us a bone and let us see her clock Caspian and break something important. For this reason alone, I give it four stars instead of five.

Toby... Well, I revise my opinion. I thought he was insane, but he's not. While he is sociopathic, he has a goal and a clearly set plan to achieve his wants. I almost admire him. Sort of - he still squicks me out. Kieran develops a much more well-fleshed personality in this book, and it's horrifying. And Caspian? Confused, tortured Caspian. He doesn't know what he wants any more than Wren does. I'd like to see him develop more. He's a bit of a 'whiplash' character - one never knows what he'll do in any given scene, and it's impossible to predict for Wren and the reader.

Yeah, I didn’t like this one. I’ve enjoyed a bunch of her other stuff. It’s all way out there but those others even though the guys were assholes they weren’t like these guys. They are horrible evil men. There was no light in this book, no indication that the men did or ever would care for her. It was just bleak and sad and there was not one moment where you thought that any of the guys had even one speck of caring in them. There was nothing to root for in any of them . No well he’s not a good guy but he’s soft for her . Nope I hope they all die fiery deaths.

uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuggggggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Okay, these guys are still fucking douche bags. I seriously hope that their dicks fall off by the third book because they obviously weren't taught on how to treat a fucking lady.

Silent Captive picks up where Branded Captive ended. I'm still very annoyed with the guys in this book - which shouldn't be a surprise. Other than that, I'm liking the smut.. but I hate how they are treating her. I feel so bad for Wren that I can't wait for her to become some type of bad ass and walk away from these guys. They need to realize that they are treating woman like shit. Lower than shit, really.

I have nothing else to say about this book. I'm obviously going to wait for the next one to come out but I'm really hoping, and praying, that the these guys will become human and realize that she's still not an object. god, I will hate everyone if that doesn't happen.

I’m not sure how to accurately describe why I didn’t enjoy this when I enjoyed the previous book (to a point). I suppose, first and foremost, it was the lack of character development. I learned essentially nothing about Wren and one or two tidbits about the Alphas. Given how sadistic they seem, it would help to have some sort of foundation for their choices.

The series has devolved from “plot with a side of torture porn” to “torture porn with a heaping helping of snuff film”. Will I pick up the next one? I don’t know. I might just pretend there will be a “Wren goes psycho, murders them in revenge, and takes over the sewers” ending and let the series go.

ETA - I have removed my rating as this is yet another unfinished series by this author. I have enjoyed her work, but I can no longer support someone who repeatedly starts a series just to leave it unfinished.

This is Addison Cain's darkest work yet with only the tiniest glimmers of light that are quickly snuffed out

This book is only for those that enjoy a truly dark read - it's listed under horror (and not romance) for a reason. The sex, at best, is dubious in consent and at times is almost violent. Wren may be beaten down, she may be degraded, defeated and desperate but still she retains an inner strength. An inner strength that marks her as one of the toughest heroines I've read about. The story is pitch black virtually from the first line, in fact it was such a tough first couple of chapters that I did briefly wonder if I would be able to read it. Once started, though, I read it in one sitting, even if it had my emotions all over the place.

Caspian continues to ignore his instincts, which leads to him repeatedly hurting Wren both physically and emotionally. He's also a prime example of power corrupting the soul. Kieran showed some glimpses of why he is such an arse. I wouldn't go so far as to say I like him, but I certainly don't dislike him quite as much as I did at the end of Branded Captive. Toby was my favourite in Book #1 and I still like him best, though his idea of love is rather scary, not to mention dangerous!

There are the very occasional glimpses of a tiny bit of humanity in our three anti-heroes. Whether Ms Cain intends to redeem these characters and allow us to forgive them, I'm not sure. If only they could let go of their 'pack' notions and embrace their instincts there could be light at the end of the tunnel. They would still be violent, aggressive and possessive alpha-holes, but loving alpha-holes too.

Wren is caught in the clutches of three dangerous Alphas, each with their own selfish designs.

One wants pleasures only an Omega can offer. Another desires affection, yet gives only cruelty in return. And the last—and by far most dangerous—he craves love, but has no idea how to return it.

Wren, being the mute heroine in this twistedly dark, sexual power exchanging dominating game of three alpha anti-heroes is all you need to know to hold on to by following the "unfortunate" present condition of the mentioned heroine...and still be mesmerized by the described pulsating need...

Blime me...I shall say NO more

2nd installment of a continuing story:

“Not a speck of trust was in those violet eyes. There couldn’t be when something so vulnerable had been used so callously. A man who watched everything, who could read a person with a single look saw…
…how lonely she was. How even surrounded by three of the most powerful Alphas in Dale City, she felt unsafe.“
This is one of those times rating a book is completely pointless. I don’t even know how to rate what is only a piece of something.
All the sex acts, and there were many, are rape in this book. It was difficult to read through.
Any pleasure Wren achieved from what happened to her was biological and pure manipulation.
Manipulation, due to Wren’s natural, biological responses.
Manipulation, because their alpha bodies are able to purr and cajole her body into a different state of feeling.
Manipulation, because the only reason she acquiesced was out of fear for “her boys’” life. And her own.
I think this second installment is a perfect example of why splitting up what is a singular story doesn’t work. It’s the middle. We’re at the arc when everything goes to hell and everyone is at their worst. When any possibility of redemption seems unattainable.
In a complete story, we would read past this dourness to see hope on the horizon, and from hope to some sort of forward progress for Wren.
Instead, down to the last awful line of this book, we’re left with the very worst of Caspian, Kieran, and Toby. Wren’s predicament is at its lowest. And I’m left feeling disgusted and angry by all the rape, hoping the three men reap what they’ve sown.

4 Stars

I wanted to give it 3 stars because the book ends at 84% which really pissed me off. It’s already a short book and then to have it end at 84% so the author could sell other books, well that makes my head shake.

Anyhow, this one was a lot darker than the first one and yeah I’m a bit confused on some parts. The author has problems with transitioning between one scene to the next and at times it’s a little choppy and it leaves you kind of confused. BUT you read it for the taboo steam.

And oh boy do you get taboo steam.

I’m not sure if I want to like the guys or not. So far, not so much. I guess I wanted more endearing quality or maybe have ONE that is nice, but all of them have their faults and it’s still hard to claim even one that is decent.

I’m not sure if the 3rd book can redeem any of them, even if they all give her flowers and the world. I guess I read it for the kink right?

4 Stars!
That. Was. Fucked. Up!

Dirtier? Check.
Darker? Check.
More desperate? Check! Check!

Like I said in my review of book one, this was different. So very different.

The alphas were corrupt and demanding in book one, but the author totally stepped up their game in this book. Wow! Sinister doesn’t even cover it.

I still didn’t swoon, but holy hell was I glued to the pages. Obsessed and completely captivated.

I LOVED IT!

Now... where the hell is book three? The wait is going to kill me. I HAVE to read what happens next!!

I was so torn throughout this book because I just couldn't get into it. There is literally only sex. (And if you know me, or have read my reviews, you know I LOVE smut. But this one just didn't do it. It's basically rape...) Except maybe four total pages there isn't sex. And the poor girl just gets used and abused this entire book. I'm to the point where I kind of just want this series to be over. I want to finish it because I want to see if Wren ends up somewhere where she's happy. But I'm also dreading finishing because I don't know how much more I can handle...

In order to have Michael continue to get the medical care the kid needs, Wren agrees to move in with Caspian and his alphas. Now that she is at their beck and call, all they do is have sex with her. Each alpha has something different that they want from her, but she feels degraded despite the orgasms. At the end of this book,

This universe still confuses me at times. There is terminology that still hasn't been explained and it is a little frustrating. I'm still waiting for something good to come of the relationship that Wren is building with these bad boys. It hasn't happened yet. She is still just a piece of property to them and it is hard to stomach. Smut factor is still a 5 of 5 - I am amazed that there was time for any other plot line to make its way to the surface in between all that sex.

I’ve read most of Addison Cain’s work and while the writing can pull you in I’ve had issues with a couple. This series has crossed a line I didn’t feel in her others. It’s ugly, the ‘alpha’s’ have absolutely no redeeming qualities and I rather felt like I was in a cesspit reading it.
There’s nothing romantic, the sex is more constant assault that gets tiresome.

2* STARS!

I'm not impressed with this book.

Wren is living with three dangerous Alphas as their cum bucket. *cringes*

Caspian, the worse-of-the-worse Alpha took her to his place because it is much better than Wren's. He keeps her for his amusement. His Second Alpha, Kieran is a wolf wrapped up in sheep. His sweet voices turns into harsh with bitter resentment. The Third Alpha, Toby has fallen a little for Wren. He's the only one who learn her sign language. He's the one who really "take care" of her despite his depraved mind.

All of them are devils.

And Wren is in the clutches. Can't escape without the children's safety is in Caspian's.

There's A LOT MORE FUCKING & F**TING than the previous book. Caspian finally shared Wren to Kieran and Toby. But it is only Toby who caught my attention. He's just... different. Crazily and madly different than other Alphas.

The story itself is not pretty and I hardly enjoyed it. Wren is in dead end with three Alphas on her back. Literally. They're keep pushing at some limit and Wren just swallow it. Really frustrating moreover with Caspian's man-whoring attitude really break Wren's Omega heart. I simply despise this man. I think this book is really hit me with all the dark abusive and non-con sexual in hardcore way.

A little disappointed by this installement, when you know how this author can write obsessed alphas to perfection.
I was a little unconfortable by the way Wren had been abused, I can't help but compare it to her other omegaverse stories, even when the male MC was a brute, he was always extremly protective over his woman. Here Caspian, who is the first alpha, watched Wren being violated and degraded by his men without blinking an eye. Strangely it was Toby that I liked most.
Despite all this, I'm giving it 4 stars, because I liked the book and I'm still hooked to the story.....Thanks to Wren, who was a great heroine.

A nice start to a new trilogy but the rest remains to be seen - which is what I said for the first part
The second part only shows the more of the first but less development on the relationship side
As of now, the 3 alpha's are still busy treating h like a possession but not one they are particularly fond of; which is a departure from AC's usual path
Honestly at this point its hard to see a connection between the Hs' and the h; apart from the physical.
Let's wait for the 3rd one ...
Will give stars once the trilogy is complete

I’M YOURS

Ms. Addison Cain knows how to spin the tale in an Omegaverse story. In this new series, Wren’s Song, it won’t be one Omega with an Alpha, but instead, the Kingpin Alpha, Caspian, his second, Kieran, and his third, Toby. How far will a woman go to protect the boys she calls hers? What will she sacrifice to keep them safe? The story is unequal power exchange, dark, raw, edgy, filthy-dirty, sexually explicit and a definite page-turner. This isn’t a romance; it is possession. The story is a continuing tale, and if you don’t read book one, Branded Captive, you won’t understand the story.

Wren is moved from the Warrens to the Pipeworks area and will be placed with the second Alpha, Kieran, but will be subjected to whatever any of the three want., singularly or in a ménage. She sold herself for the sake of her boys, while not biologically hers, ones she has cared for and raised. Now she is no different than the other women in the pen that are used at the pleasure of men.

“Wren had spent a lot of time pretending since she’d been cast down into the mud. She was good at it. Pretend life wasn’t so awful. Compartmentalize. Survive.”

“I want to be happy too. I never wanted to be abandoned, to buy children, to live one hungry day to the next. You want a fancy Omega? That’s a game I can play.” (Wren signs)

The three Alphas will use Wren while the others watch and even at times participate in the debauchery. It isn’t lovemaking; it is claiming, dominating, forceful, rough, and degrading. While there is a pecking order and Caspian is in control, the other two make it know that they will fight him for a piece of her too, as had been promised and agreed. Coercion will be used to get her to cooperate by telling her if she willing submits to each man that she will be allowed to go see Mikael. There is nothing nice or fair about the way things are done, but this isn’t a nice place, she is among murderers and liars, and they take what they want.

“I didn’t bring her here to watch her suffer. I brought her here to watch her sing.”

Wren will end up under medical treatment for her lungs, and once again, Kieran will be in charge of watching over her. When she returns to Caspian and is feeling better, she will write letters of gratitude, but that won’t be well accepted. Learning that the promises made were just empty words, she will snap and become hell-on-wheels angry and violent.

“They’d made an agreement, she’d held up her bargain—and it began to dawn on Wren that all the while, all those days, Alec had been right here. He’d probably marched right back to the pipeworks once she’d dragged him home and demanded a place. Caspian, Kieran, Toby—all of them had lied to her. Used her.”

The story is the second in a series, and the ending will segue into the next book. Wren has sold herself to protect Alec and Mikael, but in the process, she will discover more about herself too. Now she learns that everything she fought for was empty promises and lies. She may have lost Alec to Caspian, but maybe there is still hope for Mikael. We learn that Wren is a fierce Omega, one who will fight for what she believes in, literally and figuratively.

This book is hard to read but I couldn’t put it down. This is one of my guilty pleasures.

The story of Wren is hard breaking, she is so strong and resilient. The love she has for her boys.

I hate the way the omegas are treated in this world. And I love to hate the three alphas.
They think they are right and have the right to everything including people.
The way the use and abuse her is disturbing, the way the manipulate her body is hard to witness and you suffer along her.
But she has clear her end goal and that is all that matters to her. She is a survivor.

I hope I can see them suffer and that Wren can gain some power.

This was a hard installment in this series to read. It definitely does not have an ounce of romance in it just pain, humiliation, lies and manipulation. I realize that this is, I can only assume, the lowest part of the story (series). Most books have a rock bottom where things can only improve from but this is an extreme low for Wren. This part of the story would have had a little less of a negative effect if I could have continued reading the story and seen some hope on the horizon but now we are left hanging with absolutely zero good feelings toward the characters. Honestly for the first time reading an omegaverse book I truly hope these three horrible alphas find a brutal demise. They deserve it.

Addison has taken her dark and dirty story and turned the volume up to 11. Everything you loved about Wren has amplified and everything that has made you dislike the 3 Alphas has magnified. With a story that will draw strong emotions, one becomes anxious to see just how far Wren has to go and if life will get better for her. I didn't care for the Alpha's in book one, I don't care for them in book two, however Addison has made me fall for Wren's character as she is strong, resilient, and a fighter, something we all hope we can be when faced with a difficult life.

Oh the trails that Wren must endure!! Not fair but she does live in the Alpha world, we see how the Alpha's want her and Toby.....I felt so sad for towards the end, lied to and betrayed. boy that Omega went head to head with the #1 Alpha, she fought hard and long, woke up in chains,,,when she was made to apologized to Caspian it was with great joy when she saw his battle worn body, yes she had to submit but I think he admired her that he certainly said he did enjoy that fight,,, I hope to see more from the Alpha's as in treating Wren better in the next one:))

I don't even know how to rate this one. Wren is leading a wretched life and I don't think there is any sort of redemption for the alphas who own her. I am sickly fascinated with how she is going to survive or if she is going to survive. I know there will be a third book but . . . poor Wren.

I'm giving 4 stars because I had to finish reading this book. I don't recommend anyone read this book unless you have read others by Addison Cain as this one is pretty far down the twisted omegaverse dark underbelly of romance.
