Very funny indeed with all the usual references from Al Ewing that lead me to believe the two of us had identical childhoods.

Why not five stars? Well, some of the artwork was a little on the mediocre side and the story did get a bit repetitive in places, although the latter complaint is probably unavoidable due to the nature of the format... which is a choose-your-own-adventure gamebook. I probably should’ve mentioned that earlier. Whaddaya want fer nuthin’? Rubber biscuit?

Esilarante! XD

Al Ewing creates a Choose Your Own Adventure comic for Deadpool. It's a clever idea made for a character like Deadpool. However, it's a pain in the ass to read. There's tons of page flipping because it's not just turn to this page. It's turn to this panel. The panels are all numbered and you may be turning to a specific page to only read one panel. It allows you to inadvertently see where the story could be headed ahead of time. Plus, for the lettering used, the ink for the threes and fives bled together leaving me confused if I needed to go to panel 37 or 57. This would have worked better as a digital comic where you could actually make your decisions and get taken to the next panel.

2024 update: I was doing so well, duh! Then I ended up dying because of Bullseye. Sigh.
---
OH MY, it's been AMAZING!
I have been a total failure as a Deadpool, let's admit I couldn't have done worse - I never carried with me useful stuff (even if I wholeheartedly believed so: I mean, I was trying my best!), I kept losing all the fights* and I even ended up dying inside Fisk's elevator, with Sadness Level set on super high, brutally torn away from this funny and gripping adventure. But I had so much fun!

Ugh. I can't believe how much of this I read before reminding myself how much I dislike Choose-Your-Own-Adventures. And how much I dislike Deadpool. My brain has melted and not in a good way. And yet it is far from the worse Deadpool I've ever read.

Wow! This was actually a lot of fun and I really enjoyed this role-playing, stat-keeping, mini-game-playing comic book. Totally unique concept that played very well!

I can't think of a character better suited to an adventure book than Deadpool - the structure of the comic intermingles with his fourth wall breaking personality in a deliciously demented manner.

The overall plot of this adventure is something to do with a Time Helmet, but really it's just an excuse to throw Deadpool into a variety of absurd situations and see how a die or assorted small objects can impact the story. There's a lot of humor here, playing with and subverting reader expectations in the choose-your-own-adventure style layout. I was honestly impressed with how well they made use of the comic format to dictate the confines of the story, with the issues being interlocking and related to each other without being dependent on each other. I'll admit I didn't play through the book, instead reading all the diverging routes, and it works pretty well for that too, with some knowing comments hitting that approach head-0n.

There's a lot to like here - the variations on a super villain in every time, the numerous cameos that play to or off of the character behavior (especially related to the era of each comic), and the ultimate resolution of the story is a very Deadpool spin on things. This was a lot of fun, with lots of depth to explore and it took a fair bit longer to read than your traditional Graphic Novel, but I was intrigued every step of the way, by the mechanisms if not the story itself.

This is a collection of a five issue miniseries that serves as an off the wall choose-your-own-adventure. You play the first issue, then the middle three in a possible random order, then the last issue, with each issue being a relatively self-contained adventure. I played through the whole thing (dying many times but going back to the start of the issue rather than the start of the series), and then read over the paths I missed.

If you're going to do this type of thing, Deadpool (with his usual fourth wall breakage) is a good choice. I'm not a big fan of the comics character, but he works great in this setting. (To give you a sense of the gonzo nature, in the tutorial section, Deadpool is attacked by writer Kieron Gillen with a sandwich.) Ewing sets up the three middle sections in different decades of Marvel history, and Deadpool's interaction with all of them is funny and energizing.

I need to give a special mention to Espin's art. Not only does he depict different eras of Marvel's history quite well, but he handles the ridiculous panel layouts with ease. (Because of the choose-your-own-adventure nature, adjacent panels may have nothing to do with each other.) I can't envision a better artist for this type of endeavor.

For about $16, I got a pretty good payoff --- at least 3 hours of work to get through the whole thing. At times, it did feel like a bit of a slog; in issue 3, I resorted to note-taking to try and figure out what to do. And, to be honest, I'm not sure I want to go through the series again (even though there is an achievements page to work on if you wish). But as a one-off experience, it was pretty fun.

GODAMMIT THIS NEEDS TO BE READ AS A WHOLE. NOT IN SINGLES.

If you liked Choose Your Own Adventure as a kid like me. And also you like Deadpool. But you DO like him cuz you wouldn't be reading this. SO ... yeah... Then you need to read this.

Alot of fun but I have to reread it a couple of times for the full experience. With some choices I made I either died instantly, or on one occasion, had an instant victory where I didn't need to read the rest of the story.

Another reason why I need to read this again (or a couple of more times) is because I missed out on certain storylines. While skipping through the pages to go the the correct panel I saw some things happening, but while I was following my storyline I never experienced them.

But all in all it's a really fun book and I won't mind reading this a couple more times.

Well, I say I've read it - it's told Fighting Fantasy style, and I've only played through once, with barely any cheating (well, except where the protagonist told me to. Or I lost). So there's plenty left to discover. But even just that one path... well, it's Al Ewing writing Deadpool, so obviously it's ludicrous, and brilliant, and fucks with its own format. It also contains lots of very sarky in-jokes, a surprising amount of the Grasshopper, and the first in-universe appearance by an authentically puntastic Kieron Gillen. I love it.

Aside from Batman's wedding, this was a very light comic book week... perfect timing to jump into this "choose your own adventure"

What can I say though, I died. Which is officially canon! And sometime I'll cheat and see what the good ending might be, but for now I accept my fate!

But yeah, this was a lot of fun! 10/10 would recommend. Very well done, very cool, here's hoping for more like it!

This gets 5 stars in my book because it was a choose your own adventure game that actually worked and kept my attention the whole time. And I laughed out loud a few times! Gimmick books like this are often clever but don't always hold the whole way thru - this one did for me. I used a tablet and that really helped the experience. Loved the five different time periods/art styles and found it easy to navigate. I didn't actually roll but picked paths instead and that worked just fine.

A fun Deadpool adventure and nostalgia trip back to the days of choose your own adventure books.

When I was a kid, I remember reading a series of books with this decision-making concept; I used to love them. applying this to the comic set, with a tongue-in-cheek character like Deadpool is a good idea. Overall, it is very well executed; it gets lazy in the last issues (this is a difficult thing to write and you can run out of ideas quite easily; so that is kind of understandable); but aside from that, it was a nice attempt and quite enjoyable.

When comics and RPGs merge this is the wonderful brainchild. I haven't seen one of these since they were pitched in "Big", but it's waaaaaay better than those stuffy execs ever thought.

I'm going on a long trip with minimal packing space. I'm making room for this.

I actually brought out the dice and tracked my score and items. The comic works really well as a choose your own adventure/pen and paper rpg. It’s fun to read and play.

This was... actually an insanely entertaining and hilarious read. It was completely different than any other comic I've picked up--and, when you read a lot of comics, it's downright refreshing to get something completely new and different. This experimental sort of story was clever in all the right ways: It just MAKES SENSE to have a choose-your-own-adventure story be a time-traveling one. How else would you have so many different parallel stories occurring simultaneously? Al Ewing could have just made this a choose-your-own adventure comic with no rhyme or reason for it... but he actually had the multiple plot lines make sense in the actual story. Kudos, Ewing. That kind of smart writing was all through this graphic novel--there were tons of fourth wall breaks, nods to continuity errors, and just more Deadpool sarcasm and craziness than can fit in this little review. (The jab at DC Universe Rebirth had me both laughing and shaking my fist. It was funny, but... man, I'm a DC girl and Rebirth ROCKS!!!) Honestly, it's the best Deadpool story I've read in a while. This comic took full advantage of the character's craziness and just let it explode into a wonderful whirlwind of what-ifs. Honestly, you can't ask for a more fun book. Plus, it has a great re-read factor. There were many storylines that I didn't hit, so I could definitely see myself picking this up again sometime. I do have to admit that, since I read this on my lunch break, I didn't actually have dice on me, so I just picked whether I won or lost at random. I'd love to try this again the way it was intended, but it totally worked just leaving Deadpool's fate to a 50/50 choice, too. (Even if I did kill him or end the world a couple of times... oops.) The only reason I didn't give this book a full five stars is because, in comparison to other comics, Deadpool is kind of an outlier character, based more in goofiness than in concrete storytelling. I'm not saying writers haven't done more with him (there have been some very compelling stories with Deadpool, particularly when paired with Spider-Man), but if you take his character too seriously, you lose what makes him Deadpool. As such, it's difficult to give a story with this character five stars, as that would put him in the same ranks (at least in terms of my reviews) as characters like Batman, Red Hood, Superman, Spider-Man, and Loki (just to name a few). But for what this comic is, it succeeds 110-percent. It's a perfect fun read, and I can practically guarantee that if you pick it up, you'll be chuckling out loud many times as you read it.

This. Is. Soooooo. Good!!!!!
The art in all issues is top-notch! The 2nd, 3rd and 4th issues poke fun at 4 separate ages of (comic book and general) history - the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.
The gameplay is surprisingly good - the interactions between the issues (yes!) vary, the items mechanic is cleverererer than you think. There is replayability! Wow!
Rules? Yes, there are, but really ... really? Rules?
For me this is one of the strengths of the comic - both following and ignoring the rules yield satisfying results.
Deadpool remains true to himself throughout the entire mini series and that's also to be commended.
As a finisher, there is a list of achievements - hilarious and well done!
