This is book two in the Unintended Series. Even though it is a stand alone book you do miss a lot of the history from the main character. It does clear some things up if you have read book one and book one, Unintended Target, is a great read as well.
This book is full of mystery, suspense, drama, family and romance. I enjoyed all the twist and turns, surprises and plot of this story, it is very well written. There are many ups and downs, surprise and even times you may want to slap some of the characters (just saying), but you find yourself drawn into the lives of the McConnaughey family. I look forward to reading more from this author.
I received this short story from D.L. Wood, author of the Unintended series - Unintended Target and Unintended Witness. It is a heart-warming example of how people survive in crushing circumstances. How the human need for fair play will overcome those who wish to dominate. Kindness and courage abound in this tale of rescuing Jewish children from Hitler's Germany.
This is a good read. When Chloe visits her estranged father in Tennessee who had abandoned her, her mother, and her twin brother Tate years ago, she never expected to find out that she has two younger half-siblings. There's suspense, mystery, and danger as someone is after her father, an attorney, and her half-sister and half-brother due to a case he is working on. Along with her working on forgiving her father, getting to know her family, and helping out with the case, Chloe and Jack has to navigate a few rough patches in their relationship. There are twists and turns in this story. The characters are great, and the plot was well-written.
Unintended Witness was a great sequel in this series! D.L. Wood does a great job of infusing real and deep emotional issues into an intense page-turning mystery/suspense drama!
The story picks up a couple months after where the first book leaves off. Chloe is still trying getting over the last ordeal she went through with her brother and a few near-death experiences (to say the least), whew! Girl, is seriously having a rough year for real! On top of that Chloe is thrown for another doozy by being contacted by her biological father, who had abandoned her and her brother as a child. Despite her conflicting emotions she decides to travel to his home, in a quiant southern town to have a face-to-face talk with him. Problem is, Chloe feels like her father is still hiding some secrets from her. When she decides to leave to go back home, they encounter a huge explosion downtown involving one of her father's clients. As Chloe balances helping her father with the investigation along with navigating through the rocky turain of her new found family, danger is lurking around the corner threating to put in jeporday the lives of those she's has come to care deeply for.
I was so excited to catch up with my favorite characters, Chloe and Jack and also getting to know some new ones as well! (I.e. swoon-worthy Holt lol!). The author did a great job of developing the Chloe's character arc from the first to the second book. She was more confident and takes more of the lead in the investigation in this book. But you also see the vulnerability she feels of being in a new environment and trying to forgive her father who had left earlier in her childhood. I appreciated how the author didn't try play down the struggle Chloe has forgiving her father, but she still shows love to him anyway, I really admired that about the story. Even though there were a few moments that made me tear up, there were plenty of twists and turns in this plot to keep my heart pounding! This is definitely a series you'll want to add to your collection!
(I received a copy of this book in exchange for only my honest review)
Chloe McConnaughey visits Franklin, Tennessee, to re-connect with the biological father, Reese, who abandoned her, her brother, and her mother, twenty-five years ago. As a new Christian, Chloe wants to forgive her father, but doesn't know if she will be able to. But when Reese is injured and Chloe finds herself developing feelings for the siblings she wasn't aware she had, Chloe realizes she wants to love and protect what's left of her family.

I devoured the first book, so I have been waiting with anticipation for the second one. Once again, D.L. Wood, sucked me in and I thoroughly enjoyed reconnecting with Chloe and Jack and seeing what new adventures they would encounter. This second book has new twist and turns that make you not want to put it down!
I’m always happy to dive into another suspense novel by D.L. Wood. She has become a must read author for me and I’m happily reading through her backlist right now! I read Unintended Target a while back and am just now getting around to book two in the series, Unintended Witness. People say it can be read as a stand alone, which I thought was great because after reading book one so long ago, the details were fuzzy. Here’s what I’m here to say: book two has so many spoilers for book one that you should only read it as a standalone if you do not plan on reading Unintended Target and being surprised. D.L. Wood to me is top notch at twists and surprise endings, so I would hate for someone to have that spoiled by reading these books out of order. Ok, on to the review! This book read more like a legal thriller than a suspense book to me. Is that bad? No, but it is a bit of a different feel than previous books I have read by this author. Admittedly there was a lot of plot details when it came to the legal side of things with real estate or other things that zoomed completely over my head. I didn’t let that slow me down, I just kind of let it go and kept reading. Piece by piece this plot comes together and the puzzle pieces complete the picture to this tangled case. I had a lot of theories while reading and as always with this author had nothing completely on target for where this conclusion ended up! I typically love a story with more suspenseful moments and a bit more creep factor than this one, but it was still a solid read. The teaser at the back of the book has me ready for book three!
When I get asked who my favorite suspense authors are, I immediately think of D. L. Wood. While I have not read all of her books yet, the ones I have read have been very “on the edge of your seat” suspenseful and impossible to figure out, which I absolutely love! While Unintended Witness was impossible to figure out, trust me, I threw about every crazy scenario out there and I was wrong each and every time, I would call it more of a legal thriller.
The very day that Chloe hits town to try and reconnect with her father and two half siblings, strange things start happening. When her father is mysteriously injured, Chloe decides to stay and help. There’s a lot of mystery, family drama, and questionable people in this story! I was totally surprised as all the threads came together and the mysteries were revealed. I would say that you should read this series in order because Unintended Witness gave away some spoilers for book 1, Unintended Target, and that’s where you will first meet and get to know Chloe and Jack who are also in book 3, Unintended Detour.
I’m really looking forward to reading Unintended Detour, especially after reading the teaser in the back of this story!
I purchased this story. All opinions are my own. The faith thread is light. 4 stars.
Unintended Witness is the second of D.L Wood's Unintended series. I picked it up as soon as I finished book one- also a good read, but I thinkthis one outshines the first Chloe decides to go visit her estranged father in Franklin TN, and write an article about the town for her magazine while she's there- the assignment is insurance that she'll really go and have to stay even if she gets cold feet or the family reunion is a bust.(Spoiler Alert) Chloe became a Christ follower in book one, and is just coming into the array of thoughts and emotions that the forgiveness of someone who really hurt her and damaged her life is setting before her. Then things get really real in Franklin... Written well, detailed character development, well thought out plot twists; Ms. Wood wrote a book (well, two...) that certainly kept my focus off the discomfort of my thumb surgery. She's good, and puts her Christian beliefs into the story which was a large part of my choice to read her books. Get it. It's terrific.
Great story, great murder mystery and very real and human characters
I bought this book sometime back and finally got around to reading it. Shame on me for waiting! Like the first book, this one is chock full of suspense, and even better it kept me guessing until the end! I love reading a good story that doesn't require the main characters to sleep with each other. I can't say too much more without major spoilers, but I guarantee I will continue to look for more from this author. Full disclosure - her parents are very good friends. It was also great fun to read about Franklin, TN, where I actually work, and keep asking "Is that place real or fictional?" I now foresee cinnamon rolls in my future. Thanks for the clarification at the end! Bottom line - buy this book. No, first buy #1 Unintended Target. Read it. THEN buy this book! And don't forget it's on your Kindle like I did.
If you’re reading this, D.L. Wood, you are one of my favorite authors as an adult! This book, however, was simply the least enjoyable of your works, in my opinion.
As always, there were surprises! Instead of building the story and then slamming the reader with a rush of page-turning excitement, this book just kind of chugged along. There was definite character development, but the overall story felt long and winding and kind of confusing and complicated. Not the usual parfait of thrill and suspense layered into the books. Aside from one or two minor excitements, the book just didn’t “pick up” for me until around 85%.
Hopeful for the third and final book in this series though. The first one was so good, afterall.
DL Wood's first book was amazing(!) and reading the new Unintended Witness (Book 2) was like catching up with a good friend after a year or so apart. I loved getting to know Chloe in further detail while she navigates tricky terrain in her personal life, her emotional past and imminent present dangers. I read to relax and escape. DL Wood's writing flows beautifully while painting vivid scenes in my mind's eye. And the fast tempo of Chloe's adventures keeps the pages turning (even past bedtime). Bravo on a terrific follow-up (to Book 1 Unintended Witness) that raises the bar for this series! Looking forward to what's next...
Chloe coming into the Tennessee Valley a father she had not seen since she was a child. Finding her after the news of her brother Tate’s death. His home looked new with flowers, compared to what she and Tate had and foster homes. A call shortly after seeing him, his daughter telling of an explosion. He was to busy now, dealing with the damages, she was going home. Her half brother and sister wanted her to stay, they could tell her about her father. While Holt a law assistance for her father takes a call. A construction site that now has a dead body. She is intrigued by this man Holt, a family she didn’t know about, a murder was it connected to her father. If she stayed longer she would have to forgive him, and twenty five years, is a lot. Good plot, with the theme of forgiveness, was well written. Good two book series.
I just LOVE D.L. Wood’s writing style! It’s exactly what I look for in novels - riveting story arcs, believable characters, and balance of dialogue and narrative. Her descriptions are, and I feel weird for saying it, but I can’t think of a better word, delicious. Just like secret spices that set apart a special recipe from the ho-hum, her prose is rich and inviting, pulling readers right into the story, raising it to a level many books simply don’t achieve. I have been recommending these books to anyone who will listen, and I cannot wait to read the next one!
Mystery is a passion of DL Wood. It shows in her work
I was continually looking for clues and wanting to turn to the end to find the truth but couldn’t miss the various possibilities so I just kept turning the pages as fast as possible. Reading between the lines and enjoying the ride. Thank you for a clean mystery with evil shown up for what it is, and fallible people who have faith that pulls them through tough situations.
There were a lot of potential who-done-its in this book. Chloe never intended to stay in Franklin, TN as long as she did. Nor did she expect to meet and bond to the characters she me. God can change your plans to his purpose.
I hope you enjoy this suspenseful thriller as much as I did. Great story with strong characters. I especially like the way D.L. cleans up all 5he loose ends by the end of the story.
Excellent character development plot line. Adultery, extortion, deceit, and even some humor. And of course some romance. Chloe and Jack are trying to work through issues, but doing it "long distance". And there's more, but it would spoil the book, so I'll just say I definitely recommend this book!
Truly a stay up all night read! And, there was clean romance, christian integrity without being "preachy" all wrapped in a twisty plot. Every character has depth and unfortunately are believable. All the good guys were people I could admire and relate to. I particularly appreciate the author's including just enough first novel background.
I loved this book. I read Book 1 in this series first and couldn't wait to read Book 2. It did not disappoint. I like that it is not predictable and I have fun trying to figure out who did what! I also like that it is a clean, Christian book. You don't have to have sex and violence and had language in a book to make it interesting and suspenseful.
I found D.L. Wood recently and have already finished the two books in this series. Looking forward to the next installment. Meanwhile I am going to read Secrets She Knew while I wait. I love her writing so so much and the sprinkling of faith is refreshing. (I’d give more than 5 stars if I could)
Many people struggle with forgiveness, Christians included. As Christians, knowing and doing are two different things. Chloe allowed God to help her forgive an absentee father, and in the process discovered she had another sister and a brother. I love reading suspense Christian novels and D. L. Wood delivers.
Another great page turner! Stayed up way too late again finishing it. Chloe meets her dad after 25 years, finds out she has siblings and it continues down hill from there…. My hubs graduated from Franklin high so I especially love the setting of the series!
Great read. I enjoy series that follows the same main characters throughout the series, though Jack and Chloe were not together for most of the book
This book was totally different than the first, as it has Chloe going to visit her father who deserted the family years before. In addition to a lot of suspense and drama, the book also had her dealing with forgiving her father.
This is what happens when Chloe goes to visit the father who left when she was younger! Wow, she meets younger half-siblings and finds our real quickly how intense some court cases can be! Wow! Great story. Could be stand alone, but it definitely helps to read in order. Jack is still in the picture, but not much romance in this one.
Wood has crafted an edge-of-your seat thriller. I was immediately immersed into the drama. Twists and turns kept me turning the pages. This novel is hard to put down. I'm looking forward to reading the next installment in this series.
Recommend to readers who enjoy clean thrillers.
I borrowed a copy from KU. I have expressed my honest view.
I liked the 2nd in this series as much as I did the first. Is there a 3rd one coming out? I enjoy this new to me author! I really like the characters she has developed and can see them in my mind's eye. So enjoyed this book!
Good book. Great storyline. I really enjoyed it. Suspenseful with twists and turns. The only thing I'd say is a bit too descriptive of places. Other than that it was great.
I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered Franklin, Tennessee was the setting for this book. The setting drew me in, but the writing, characters and plot kept me reading. “Who done it” was a real surprise, just the way I like it!
