Cory Q Tan is an Award Winning Children’s Book Author who illustrates his own books. Or rather, an illustrator who writes his own stories, for he sees himself first as an artist, then a writer. He graduated from the Slade School of Fine Art (UK), trained in the fine traditions of lithography and etching, and his works have always had a strong illustrative and narrative quality. He has a strong affinity for figurative and surrealist art, and Peter Breughel, Pablo Picasso and Japanese Anime Master Hayao Miyazaki count amongst his favourite artists.

He first came across the idea of becoming a children’s book author when he became a father at the age of 32, but it wasn’t until 11 years later that he finally produced his first children’s picture book– ‘A Very Special Cat’. Since then, he has gone on to produce 7 more books and is enjoying art making and story telling like never before!

Cory’s Children Picture Books had won several awards over the past few years, including The Story Monster Royal Dragonfly Award (Honorable Mention), The Independent Publisher Book Awards (Silver, Children’s Illustrated E-Books) and The Next Generation Indie Book Awards (Winner, Best Illustrations). In 2020, his book ‘Theodore The Unfortunate Bear’ was shortlisted for the prestigious International Rubery Book Awards (UK)! His proudest achievement to date, however, was to attain the Gold Medal for Children’s Illustrated Picture Books (E-Book) in the 2020 Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards (USA) for his book ‘Theodore and The Bear from London’!

A former art teacher, Cory has a great passion for art history and had enjoyed teaching it to his students. Now, he infuses numerous elements of art history in his books and through his books, he hopes to promote awareness of well-known and less well-known masterpieces to his readers.

I won this book in a goodreads drawing.

A kid finds a cape that lets him fly. He almost immediately loses it, and gets into conflict with his entire neighborhood trying to get it back. Somewhat humorous.

What a nice surprise! This little book popped to the top of my tbr list just in time for me to take it with me on a visit to Wisconsin, where I have a couple of grand nephews just the right age for it.

"Hi, Leo! Hi, Warren! Oh, all right, Lorelei. Sit on Auntie Cookie's lap. You can hear it, too."

This brightly colored tale of a flying piece of red cloth is a delight. The cape comes out of nowhere, landing on the narrator's big brother as he sits outside one day. It takes him on a day full of adventures, problem solving, conflict resolution and just plain fun.

It's as much fun to read as it is for the kids to read with you.

I received this book free in exchange for an honest review on Goodreads.

Cute children's book

This book was about a boy who was trying to be a hero with a magical cape's help. Most of his hero stuff didn't involve the cape, but he managed to help anyway. This book teaches children that they don't need super powers to be a hero.

Loved this!!!

Excellent book for kids!!! What's crazy is that the boy in this story did more heroic actions without the cape.

This wonderful book is perfect for encouraging your young children or grandchildren to read. Enough of a story and nice pictures to keep their interest, but of enough difficulty reading to stretch their vocabulary and make the assistance or involvement of the caring adult a must. Perfect with hot chocolate : )

Another fabulous read from the author. Having read A Dream, I was keenly waiting for another book by the author. The illustrations are lifelike and draw your immediate attention. Thus when I received a copy of A Hero's Cape, my excitement knew no bounds. My expectations were high when reading the book and the book didn't disappoint me. I was rather feeling lost when the book finished, since I felt it finished too soon. This is the magic of Cory's books. The illustrations add a charm to the book that keeps you captivated. I read the two books with my daughter and she kept requesting to reread the books since they are simple to understand and have the gift of holding on to reader's attention.

Like A Dream, this book too is a first person narrative which makes reading endearing. The elder brother of the narrator finds a cape while reading his favorite book on a bench in a park. Just when he realizes that it's a flying cape, a gust of wind sweeps the cape away. What follows is a sequence of side-splitting ( cape used as spare diaper for a baby!!) and unforeseen events involving various characters in the neighborhood. This includes a Father and a Baby, a Girl walking her Dog in the park, a Cat eager to protect her Kittens, a lost Bunny, and many others.

Just like in his previous book, this book too has a lesson for kids. It makes one realize that you don't need a hero's cape to become a Real Hero. It's the small random acts of kindness, courage, sacrifice and selflessness that you perform in your daily grind of life, without noticing. It teaches a valuable and priceless lesson to do good without thinking of reward or name. One becomes a Hero in its true sense, when helping out and reaching out to people in need without thinking of the outcome.
Recommended for all parents and readers who love illustrations and can appreciate the joy of reading a simple straightforward book. I added to my bedtime story list for my daughter next to A Dream.

A little boy is very excited when a cape that can make him fly drops into his life. He starts planning how he can be a superhero when a wind sweeps the cape out the window. In his chase, the boy stops and helps many others along the way he finds in need. Does he really need a cape to be a superhero?

A cute story with a fantastical cape and one madcap chase as a mechanism to point out that you don't really need superpowers or a magical cape to be a superhero. The copy I received from the author could have used one more round of editing of the writing part of the book. (But they were very minor things.) The illustrations are fantastic and anyone who loves anime or manga-style illustrations should hunt down this artist's work. Parents and adults looking for a story that encourages kids to be little heroes should go find this book.

Notes on content: One bare baby's bottom illustration.

I received a free digital copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.

A delightful story of a boy wanting to be a hero when he mysteriously finds a magic cape. Even though he does become a hero it is not in the sense he may have expected.
A great book based around a great moral on how good deeds, and not a cape, makes you a true hero in life.
The simple narrative told from his brothers point of view makes the story more endearing to read.
Beautiful artwork in the form of illustrations brings the story to life and adds extra charm to an already engaging storyline.
I would recommend this book to parents and children who appreciate the joy of quality reading.

Great Unexpected Ending

I read this story with my six year old and we loved it. In her words (without giving the ending away) she loved how he was able to help people along the way and the ending was her favorite part.

I received a free review copy of this book.
Cute and colorful! The art looks inspired by both woodblock prints and Doraemon manga. I didn't expect the talking animals! The happy ending, though, I did expect. I still kind of wonder where the cape came from!

❤️❤️EXCELLENT

The young boy was reading his favorite book, lying on his favorite bench in the park near his home.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, a large red cloth fell on his face...

********

Here is the incredible adventure of a young boy with a big heart who sets out in search of the owner of this large, mysterious red fabric.

Very beautiful colorful drawings and a magnificent background story on benevolence and charity.

Absolutely worth discovering!

Okay

My children absolutely adore this book. Reading literature is so important to the development of a child's mind, and I cannot think of thing I would rather do then sit down to read to them in the evenings. Imagination and growth are so vital in those so young.

I won this in a giveaway. I like the message that being a hero involves helping others. That part is good, as is having characters who look East Asian. I'm not sure why the brother is doing all the helping, while the sister's role is to declare that her brother is a hero. Why doesn't she get to help, too? I understand not being able to declare good traits for one's self, as that would be presumptuous, but I still cringe at having a female character be close to invisible, her only role to declare the value of the male character. :/

I glanced at illustrations in some of his other books & suspect I would enjoy them more - they seem more lushly drawn & colored, which is something I appreciate.
