After reading it for the second time I believe I'm ready to review this beauty. So... behold the masterpiece. I shall never recover. 💔 This book has stolen my heart in so many ways. Priceless.

I loved this so much more then Mark of the Raven, and I can't wait for Cry of the Raven, which will probably be my favorite. ^.^

Let's talk about this book. How much I loved it, and why you'll love it too.

First off the setting was absolutely gorgeous. And the map. *gasps* So beautiful. I could picture everything so much better compared to the first book. The ocean and sand were magnificent.... *happy sigh*

Details ~ Oh my. I loved them so much. I just can't-- *fangirl mode* -- THEY WERE EPIC, AND TOUCHED MY DEAR LITTLE HEART. 😍 The forests, the sky, the dreamscape, the ocean, the people, the castle, the courtyards...etc.

Plot ~ Unexpected tragedy. The ending gave me goosebumps, and I might have cried, which isn't abnormal. xD There were a couple slow moments...but mainly cuz I wanted it to be Damien and Selene's perspective the whole time. Lots of romantic action...which I found absolutely adorable.

Content ~ Dark Lady...some blood wounds...and a very, very suggestive scene between Selene and Damien..

Romance ~ I just can't contain my inner fangirl rn-- *extreme fangirl mode* -- It. Was. So. Cute. 💕💕💕💕😍😍😍😻😻😻😻 ALL THE SCENES LEFT ME GRINNING EAR-TO-EAR AND PERHAPS GIGGLING HAPPILY. *sighs dreamily* It was just so perfect. An arranged marriage with real love developing ..... so adorable. I could read about these two over and over and over again and never get tired of them.

Characters ~ They've been further developed since Mark of the Raven, and made into extremely loveable people. Emotions raged like never before inside of me--which is normal for every new book. ;P

Selene ~ Awww, I could relate to her so well, even though I've never been faced with any of those trying emotions. She's just such a loveable character, allowing the reader to understand her without blabbering how she feels or what she believes. The reader just understands cuz she shows instead of tells. >.< *squeals* You heard me right.

Damien ~ And oh, my poor heart. I could barely keep from crying every time he was upset over his brother. 😿 I understand him completely--having experienced such grief before--in loving someone so much, then they pass away. I loved how he was strong and yet weak at the same time, and how he was able to show instead of tell of the storm inside of him. How Selene just understood. ((Busse is amazing.... *inner fangirl*))

Taegis ~ Oh. How can anyone not love him??! The whole time I just kept saying, "Taegis, why aren't you married??!" Even though that question was answered. ;P

Karl ~ I can understand him. I just wish he weren't so aloof all the time. :P Although, there was a specific scene near the end I recall him showing his caring side. The soft part that's always hidden.

Amara ~ If only.... 💔😭😭😭😭💔

Breven ~ Fight hard. Never stop.

Overall ~ My emotions raged within this, from extremely happy to devastated. A Book that can do that deserves my praise, my support, and my five stars. It deserves your's too. ;)

~2020 Review~

Omg this boooook, the ending 😱😍😭😭😭 I can't wait for Cry of the Raven.

~2023 Review~

This book. My heart. I love seeing Selene's character growth, as she discovers The Light and the true purpose of her gifting. And her and Damien, I love them ❤️
I feel like I should warn people that this book is very romance heavy and there is a fade-to-black scene. That would normally bother me, but I think it was done very well, without over the top uncomfy details, so I didn't mind it.
The ending still gets me 😭💔

~~~~~~~~~~~
~2025~
yes, I did cry at the end again
But first she must adapt to her new life as wife to Lord Damien Maris, the man she was originally assigned to kill.
While adjusting to her marriage and her home in the north, her power over dreams begins to grow. As the strongest dreamwalker to exist in ages, her expanding power attracts not only nightmares but the attention of the Dark Lady herself.
My personal Rating- Two Stars
**Due to a fade-to-black scene, this rating is a case-by-case bases. See below.
This book definitely toed the line for me, personally.
While I’m interested in the plot and this world (the author has made it well, it’s very fleshed out and detailed), this book went past my comfort zone on some elements. Mainly the romance and the Good vs. Evil fight.
Let’s discuss the second one first: Because of the Dark Lady is chasing Selene in her dreams, it kind of felt like a spiritual warfare book, which I’ll admit, I typically stay far away from those kinds of stories. I can handle all kinds of suspense books, but spiritual warfare is my personal tipping point.
Secondly, the romance: There’s a fade-to-black scene of our main couple and while they’re married at the time, I still don’t need to know about their kissing leading to the bedroom. It’s an unpopular opinion, but one I stand firm on. I think it rubbed me the wrong way even more because they were not equally yoked then and being lead by their emotions and feelings for the other. I wish that would have at least been touched on, but no. (Side note: If you loved the whole “River of Time” series by Lisa T. Bergren, you would most likely be completely okay with how it’s handled in this book. I wasn’t a fan of that series because of the marital content. This book had it milder and less comments/suggestions. I’m not a fan of either way, though, so there’s that.) Damien and Selene are cute together, but there’s quite a bit of tension now that they’re married.
So, opinion thus far on this series? Hmm. I see why so many love it. It’s fleshed out and captivating. But this book definitely goes right up to the line of what I’m comfortable with in both the spiritual warfare and the romance.
Usually the second book in a trilogy are dark and depressing … and the ending to this book has some dark elements … but I enjoyed following Selene and Damien as their relationship deepened and intensified … their marriage blossoms from a tentative friendship to a passionate romance … and Selene’s desire to learn more about the Light brings them closer together … Selene is also growing into her power as a Dreamwalker, and her power soon eclipses that of her mother …
This book definitely is not a stand alone … all the plot twists in this book - and there are lots - rely on knowledge presented in the first book … and this book promises an exciting conclusion in the third book … but what I liked most about this book is how the story arc is so character driven even though the plot twists are many … I fell in love with Selene and Damien as they fell in love with each other, and as Damien taught Selene about the power of the Light, I felt the peace and warmth provided by the Light …
I devoured Mark of the Raven in a day, so of course I was on pins and needles for the next book! Flight of the Raven picks up exactly where the first book ended and sets us forth on a quest of self-discovery.
It was really beautiful to see Selene open her guarded heart to the possibilities of happiness and hope she thought was completely barred from her. As she and Damien carefully explored their new and unexpected relationship, I both cheered and cringed because they are so awkward and adorable. There was ONE major communication issue that was used as a plot device, so while I both understand why it happened, I also thought it was a little out of character.
I felt the settings and kingdoms were even more vividly depicted! Especially the ocean...ah, one can easily see why Selene falls in love with it. And the Christmas-like festival!
Although this book is more focused on character than plot, I didn't get bored, because it was all interesting. It is more of a romance than an epic fantasy, but the pieces are all set up for an intense final book! And the scenes with the Dark Lady were suspeeeeeeeeeeenseful, gosh, gee.
I was mostly okay with the ending...although I don't like character death, this one turned out better than I predicted, although I am not certain it really HAD to happen other than removing the character from complicating the future stories...and I would have RATHER seen that character's future. Especially since the reason for the character's death could have been solved by another less fatalistic method.
Content:
Selene uses a fantasy curse word often.
Mainly, one should realize that this book is about two people who had to enter an unexpected marriage and are now figuring out what to do with it--leave it as a title only or actually come to love one another? Damien is trying to be respectful and Selene is insecure, so this leads to them both dancing around one another for the majority of the book before finally deciding to share a bedroom, leaving a small fade to black and waking up in the morning. Nothing is at all explicit, but the subject is a strong focus of the book, so it may not be suitable for some younger readers.
In conclusion--I really enjoyed it and can't wait for the next book!!! :D
I pre-ordered the audiobook and literally set aside the audiobook I was listening to so I could jump into this one right away. After the sort of cliff hanger ending of the last book, I've been impatiently counting down to this book.
This book was a bit different than what I was expecting, yet in some ways it was exactly what I was expecting. It had less action than the last book. Really only the ending had anything like the danger and tense scenes of the first book. I was expecting a lot of Damien and Selene falling in love and growing as people, and that's exactly what I got and it was really well done and sweet and adorable.
Even though this book was in many ways slower than the first book, I still couldn't stop listening. The struggle inside Selene is very compelling and Amara's struggles were a good parallel.
There were a few doctrinal things I didn't agree with, but overall I appreciated the Christian aspect of the book.
The ending was the best part of the whole book. Tense and heart-wrenching and totally sets up a dramatic finale in the third book. I'm already starting a countdown to the release of book 3!
4.5 Stars!!
This book picks up right where Mark of the Raven left off! And thank goodness... that cliffhanger was BRUTAL!!
Diving deeper into the light in this installment!
I love this series so much, we get to see more into the life of our main characters and their houses. Honestly - who doesn't love a character driven story? Thats definitely what you get in Flight of the Raven. Selene and Damien's arc takes place in book 2 so it felt a little more slow moving but thats ok because and it was a beautiful thing.
I can not believe this is a "Christian Fantasy" its so well done and not at all what I expected it to be. I am always looking for books like this and its really sad that its so rare. But from this moment forward Mrs. Busse has gained a new Fan and I have to read all of her books now.
Just a heads up- There was more romance than action in this book which was to be expected with that cliffhanger from Mark of the Raven- but Im ok with that. Plus its done in such a subtle way and not the mushy gushy kind. It felt authentic and real and I adored it. It had to happen anyways to make way for the War that is brewing up for the last book!
Im so excited cant wait to start it!!
A breathtaking continuation of the Ravenwood Saga, Flight of the Raven completely swept me away!
I loved the first book (Mark of the Raven) and have been on pins and needles waiting for the sequel to release. Flight of the Raven was one of my top-anticipated releases of the year and I was worried it might not live up to the first book, but it surpassed my expectations and I’m happy to say that I absolutely loved this book!
Author Morgan L. Busse has outdone herself in this delightful sequel, with a unique love story, fascinating dream powers, a vivid world, and characters who stole my heart.
Even as Selene finds her new place in the world and struggles to learn more about her dreamwalking gift, tensions are mounting with the oncoming threat of war while the autumn turns to winter, and Damien must sort out plans with the few allied Houses as well as the feelings of his heart. A few mind-blowing revelations and twists were introduced, and I’m so excited to see where these plot elements go!
The new major setting, Northwind Castle, completely captured me. I want to go visit this castle on the cliffs by the sea! The rest of the world is neat too (and GORGEOUS), especially seeing more of it as we do in this one, and I love the feel of it and of the different Houses with their unique gifts, including Damien’s power over water. I also loved the wintry, Christmas-type fantasy holiday. It made me happy. ^_^
I especially found the dreamwalking to be fascinating! I LOVE dream-related things in stories, and I loved the parts in this book which built on the first one—I don’t want to spoil anything, but THINGS are happening and it’s SO intriguing.
Selene and Damien are the best! I love them so much. Reading their story, especially getting to see both of their points of view, was just delightful. Both of them are growing and changing and their story makes me happy as they face new obstacles together. These characters really made the book. (The other characters are all vivid as well!)
The romance was precious! Those who have read the first book will know about a certain event which changed the dynamics for this book, and it definitely made things interesting! XD But I thought it was really well done, and it felt different. I loved watching Damien and Selene get to know each other, and especially how they each have something that the other needs and how they reach out to help each other.
There’s awesome action near the beginning and end, but although technically the main central part of the book is a quieter part of the story, it never once ceased to be fascinating. I love how these books are so utterly absorbing even when nothing obviously exciting is happening. In fact, some of my favorite parts were the parts between, being immersed in the characters’ struggles, the delightful world, and the romance and political ins and outs. I loved ALL the parts of this book!
I suppose I had a lot of feels about one incident near the end—I’m not sure how I feel about that—and I still want to see more of the wyvern riders someday, but otherwise I really don’t have anything to complain about. It was so, so good!
Threads of excitement, mystery, dreams and danger, love and loss, romance and beloved characters, faith, suspense, an enthralling setting, and light overcoming darkness are all intricately intertwined in this masterful tale. It hit just the right balance to keep me turning the pages. I didn’t want it to end and never wanted to set it down. Definitely one of the best books I’ve read this year!
After the way this one ended, with an almost-but-not-quite cliffhanger, I’m SO ready for the final book, Cry of the Raven! (Which my sister and I have playfully retitled Save Ophie. XD) I’ll just be over here on the edge of my seat waiting until it releases, thank you very much. I need it in my life! (Just like you need these books in your life.)
I love this series dearly and I can’t wait to see how Damien and Selene’s story concludes!
Mark of the Raven was one of my favorite reads of all time and this second installment did not disappoint. The settings and character interaction were so vivid, rich and full of life. Definitely the most enjoyable parts. There were plenty of good twists and page turning moments ... the Dark Lady, yeah, my bunny slippers are still hiding.
Congrats to Busse for pulling me so deeply into Selene and Damien's "finally" kiss. Kisses, meh, I never care about them, but this was so, so good ;).
On a down note (spoilers ahead) ~
This is a personal issue for me. I don't handle character death well so it has to feel necessary for the character's arc/main storyline for me to begrudgingly accept its appearance. While most of the climax/ending was just perfectly amazing; I can't make myself feel that a certain character's demise was needed. I'm trying to trust Busse has a reason ... trying.
But overall, seriously, where is book 3. I need it hmmm, in the next five minutes would be quite acceptable.
I knew going in that this book was going to be fantastic from the way book one ended. I mean wowza. And it didn't disappoint.
I love character driven stories and this is certainly one. I adore Selene and Damien. They are my children and no one had better be mean to them. And I don't want any disrespect on Taegis either, counselor, guardian, and matchmaker 😜
Where the first book was much more fantasy, this was much more romance. I do wish that there was some more action, and the ending was a bit anticlimactic. Still I was never bored and the next book looks like it will more than make up in the action department.
Content:
Not much, a fade to black scene between a married couple as well as insinuations of their relationship. Mild violence and some slightly creepy demonic stuff (as showed in contrast to the Light- it never bothered me but it might make more sensitive readers uncomfortable)
A solid second installment in this series. I am invested in this world and these characters' happiness. I can't wait for book three!
I AM FEELING SOO MANY EMOTIONS!
I loved the characters and the story line in the first book, but this one might take the "favorite" spot.
The first book dealt a lot with WORLD building and "Flight of the Raven worked on CHARACTER building. We're getting the see THEM. Their fears, their faults, their strengths and a snippets of what's to come. I'm really enjoying where the author is taking this story!
The author does an amazing job grabbing you and pulling you into the story. The pages fly by without you even realizing it.
Pro tip: NEVER get comfortable where you are in the story! The author will pull the rug out from underneath you in snap.
I'm VERY excited to see how she weaves and finesses the 3rd book! My heart is already breaking when I think of this series ending, I'm so invested in these characters.
I can't say too much because "SPOILERS", but I can say that the author wrote a story that will touch those that hurting and lost. I have a feeling many people will be able to connect with Damien and Selene and what they feel.
We are ALL special to God, no matter how much darkness you think you have in your past. He is much greater and brighter than it all!
"Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12
I rated it a 5/5 stars!
What an incredible sequel! I had huge hopes for this book after Mark of the Raven and this totally met all of my hopes and blew me away!
Watching the characters continue their journey was so epic. How they grew from the ending of the first book and came into themselves more throughout this story was exactly what I was hoping for.
Also...I ship!! Slow burn romance!!! ALL THE FANGIRLING.
I adored how the plot of this book didn’t just focus on action and adventure, even though it had a good amount of that, it also had so much emotional and political intrigue. I’m not usually one for political things but this series does it so perfectly that I understand everything and can’t help but get sucked into the story heart and soul.
I’m so utterly in love with this book and these characters and I can’t recommend it enough! Such a beautiful, epic, heart-stealing story! Definitely a favourite.
❝The light will come again❞
We follow Selene as she acclimates to her betrayal of her mother, the leaving of her home and her new title as Lady Maris. Damien must deal with a new wife as well the disruption of his plans to unite the houses. Amara must now train as the new heir of House Ravenwood. The sequel was so good. I forgot how much YA focuses on romance but I didn’t mind here, Selene and Damien had me kicking me my feet. And that ending?! Can’t wait to read the last book.
“Every year we remember the Light during the darkest day. We were not left in darkness, to flounder about in this life. Instead, humankind was given hope.” He squeezed her hand.“We have hope, even with the threat of the empire.”
“Does that mean we will win?”
“No. Sometimes we lose, for reasons I don’t understand. But He does.”
How exciting it is to dive back into the adventures of Selene and Damien! Flight of the Raven was one novel I was highly anticipating, and it did not disappoint! In book two of THE RAVENWOOD SAGA, Morgan L. Busse carries on with this epic story, following a would-be-assassin, her sister, and the young lord who is their target. With action, romance, mystery, and a journey of faith, this tale swept me away.
Truly, I'm always looking for new Christian fantasy novels, and this one has caught my attention. Just as with the first book, I loved the world. It is rich, diverse, and fascinating. We're learning a little more about each house, and with every tidbit of information, I get more excited! It's one of those fantasy lands that you could get lost in.
The Christian allegory is unfolding so wondrously! Selene is hunted by the Dark Lady whom she's sure she doesn't want ... and haunted by the Light that always seems out of reach. It was amazing to watch her wrestle within herself and slowly come to believe and trust this Light. The way the author writes this beautiful, intense allegory reminds me of Anne Elisabeth Stengl's TALES OF GOLDSTONE WOOD series. (Oh, how I miss reading from that series! It's good to get a taste of that kind of awesome fantasy in Morgan L. Busse's novels!)
It was interesting to get some of the story from Amara's point of view. I loved seeing some more of little Ophelia. Their mother makes me furious! *feeling all kinds of rage* So many great characters! That's what makes this series glorious!
Mark of the Raven definitely built up to the romance we get in Flight of the Raven. I was looking forward to it, and glad to see this couple blossom! *happiness* There were many sweet, tender moments. And some raw, sacrificial moments that made this love story that much more beautiful. Pretty far into the book, there were a few kisses and talk about the marriage and feelings. It was all pretty sweet, though some of the details weren't necessary (in my own opinion). And even though there was nothing explicit, since this book does have a marriage of convenience it felt more "adult" than "young adult".
I smiled, I cried, I was surprised, and my heart sighed within me. Flight of the Raven was an emotional, thrilling journey! I was sad to finish ... realizing I won't be feeling that happy feeling that I get when reading about these characters for awhile. And, whoa, that cliffhanger! (It made me think of the Marvel movies, for some reason. *laughs*) I can hardly wait to see what happens! Next book, please!
I received a complimentary copy of Flight of the Raven from the author and/or Bethany House Publishers. This review is honest and all my own.
Well, I'm finally getting around to reviewing this! I've already reread it and it was just as good (maybe even more so) than the first time. The books in this series are true gems and will always be on my favorites shelf. :D
Flight of the Raven immediately impresses the eye with its absolutely stunning cover, and it definitely doesn't disappoint after with its unique well-written characters as well as the author's beautiful writing style. In the first book, we see Selene (the female MC) with a hard shell but as the book continues, we start seeing her soft true character. In Flight of the Raven, we continue seeing that and I absolutely love her true personality. Busse portrays her as a fierce character but extremely kind and thoughtful on the inside. Damien, the male MC, is exactly like a Peeta in my opinion. He's soft, gentle, caring, and sensitive to Selene and how she feels. He's considerate and very loved by his people, and overall one of my favorite male MCs... ever.
Personally, I did feel that the ending was rather anticlimactic for what led up to it, so I was a bit disappointed by that, but in general the plot was done brilliantly and the writing style only enhanced it.
This series is absolutely incredible and I would strongly recommend it. 5 stars.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher. All thoughts are my own and a positive review was not required.
5⭐️
Both times I’ve read this book, I’ve given it an enthusiastic 5⭐️!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I seriously love this story, Morgan! You are brilliant!
Christian fantasy of a woman born into the Ravenwood family who have the dreamwalking gift. This book picks up immediately after book #1 cliffhanger ending and doesn’t slow down at all!
I loved the pacing, the heart and most of all, the faith that shines through this series!! 💖
Flight of the Raven by Morgan L. Busse was a fantastic sequel to the first book, Mark of the Raven. This book gave me all the feels, and left me wanting more and more of Selene and Damien. Like, they were perfecttt together, ahhh.
❇ This book definitely went more in depth romance-wise, as Selene and Damien's relationship grew. I loved Selene's character development in this one. The pacing was perfectt, and I could clearly see how she struggled to love and trust Damien due to fear. But seeing her overcome these obstacles, as well as fighting her internal war of whether to follow the Dark Lady or the Light, was a really cool aspect of seeing spiritual warfare in play in Christian fiction books. The romance was pretty clean, so that was good. There was physical attraction, and one suggestive scene that was sorta fade-to-black, but yeah, content-wise, I don't really have any issues.
❇ I haven't read a book this fast in a longggg time. I mean, I finished it within 24 hours because it was just SO GOOD. It was better than Mark of the Raven, in my opinion, because we got more character growth, and of coursee more of Damien <3
❇ But also, there were more spiritual elements in this one as well, which I absolutely loved. Seeing how the Dark Lady followed Selene relentlessly and entered her dreams represented the spiritual realm today. There is a constant fight between the forces of Heaven and the forces of Satan, but, as shown through this book, God intercedes on our behalf and fights for His children. Furthermore, I thought Selene's internal battle was really relatable to people today, and how so many struggle to follow the true Light, God. It really expounded on points so many people often think, like, "How can He love someone like me, with a past as tainted with sin as mine?," and "Why was He silent all these years, and let my family and friends pass away? Why didn't he save them?" Seeing these questions I, and so many others wonder, mirrored in this book just hit home. And the simple answers Damien, Cohen, and others offered just reflected the light of God within themselves. Just knowing that the Light, God, loves us no matter how dirty and stained our past is, is just truth of his grace and incomprehensible love towards His children.
Characters: Once again, Taegis is just ✨amazing✨ The relationship he and Damien forged ever since he was just a little boy is so heartwarming. I love when books have a mentor/guardian guy, because it shows we all need a little help and advice sometimes :)
~ Cohen... loll, love this guy.
~ As for Sten and Karl... ok, so I like Sten, though I feel like this book didn't have that much about him in it, but Karl is just r u d e . I mean, can Selene get another guard, please? Just be like, "As Grand Lady of House Maris, I forever banish you to mop my floors for the rest of your life," hehe ;)
~ I also loved the chapters on Amara, though I still strongly disliked her until the last chapter of the book. Then, just a small crack of light peeked into my heart, and I had like... 0.1% of sympathy for her, XD. But seeing
❇ The ending was bittersweet, and JDSHFJSHFKJ WHAT IS UP WITH MORGAN BUSSE AND THESE CLIFFHANGERS?! LIKE I LOVE YOU, BUT YOU'RE KILLING ME, GIRL!
No but seriously, those last three pages... AHHHHHH I NEED BOOK THREE!!!
In a nutshell, Flight of the Raven was an astounding novel, and deepened my love for the Ravenwood Saga. I can't wait to see what The Cry of the Raven has in store for the seven Great Houses! ;)
ANYWAYS, GOTTA GO PUT CRY OF THE RAVEN ON HOLD NOW 💨
Flight of the Raven picks up right where the previous book left off without much passage of time; a few hours at most. Selene and Damien's relationship with one another plays a huge part in the arc of this book so there is obviously a larger romantic element here than in the previous book. And while this book felt much more slow-moving than Mark there were still some developments in the story that advance the plot.
In this book, Selene is really on a journey to discover just who she is. She wants to learn as much as she possibly can about the history of House Ravenwood and their gifting and use that information to inform her current situation and position in the realm. She's also digging down deep inside of herself and grappling with her feelings, emotions, and confusion about the things she's been brought up to believe. Selene is a very rich character and it was interesting to get to know her further in this book. It's a good thing that she is such a great character since the majority of the book is dealing with her and her internal struggles regarding her marriage to Damien, how she should feel about the Light (the deity of the Old Ways whom her husband and his people worship), and even the smaller issues like fitting into daily life at Northwind Castle.
Lord Damien is the perfect gentleman character. Though he does make a few blunders on occasion, for the most part, he is the quintessence of refinement and poise. You might even criticize him for being too perfect, though he felt genuine enough to me to not find him to be flawless to the point of annoyance. His earnest care and concern for his people was a great quality that he showed from the moment we're introduced to him in Book 1. He's a truly just and honest leader.
Sprinkled throughout the first three-quarters of the book are some tidbits of backstory on Damien, some history of the giftings, and other information which helps to flesh out the story world even more and make it that much richer and vivid. But the action doesn't really get going until much later. After all the character development that takes up the majority of the book, there is some action at last near the final quarter of the book.
In summation, this is a highly character-driven book with lots of time spent getting to know the major players from Book 1 on a much deeper level. And we learn more about the story world and its history and lore. This all builds up to the few bits of action we get near the end and sets up things for a much quicker-paced, action-filled adventure in the next volume. So let's hope Busse keeps the momentum going that was built up in the final chapters and carries it over to Book 3.
Content Advisory
Mentions of marital infidelity (though not graphic), multiple murders, typical war-related violence that you'd expect from a fantasy story with kingdom rivalries. There are also allusions and references to intimacy in marriage though nothing is described or explicitly stated beyond a few kisses. Would recommend for male and female readers ages 18 and up.
Good thing I didn’t break my book gripping it that last 100 pages or so. 😅
What a turn of events! Like whew buddy! Prepare yourself!
I struggled with starting Flight of the Raven because I had a *really* hard time connecting with Selene. It wasn’t until I kept reading that I realized how well the author wrote her character. She’s seemingly so cold to me, though she’s not really anywhere near that. Her growth in this story deeply reflects that on so many levels it left my heart aching. I’m VERY excited to see her continuing journey in book three as I think it’s going to be something deep and powerful.
I also continued to love Damien’s character so much. And in fact, I can finally answer questions like “What character(s) is most like you?” or “What character(s) can you most relate to” by answering with Damien! I related to him so much in book one and only continued to relate to him in such a personal and heartfelt way. Things he told or shared with Selene reminded me of what I would say and just felt a joy to so deeply to relate to a character this strongly.
Lastly, I’ll just quickly say (since this review is already so long) that I loved the marriage aspect in this story. It was fantastic! We definitely need more fictional stories like this, one of showing love bloom and couples desiring to know one another.
Overall, I was moved by how this story affected me. I wasn’t quite expecting a roller coaster of emotions, but I enjoyed it and can’t wait to read more of Selene’s story!
Wow! This intense series picks up right where Mark of the Raven left off. Selene left her family home to save Damien and finds herself still in the middle of intrigue, murder, and secrets.
I love this series. It is a war between the light and the dark. The House of Ravenwood has operated in the dark for centuries. They are all about power and gain. Selene learns the difference between light and dark and the warmth found in the light. She learns of the good in people and that a ruler does not need to rule with "an iron fist."
Flight of the Raven was hard to put down. Selene and Damien's story kept me turning the pages. They are strong and better together. I would suggest that you read Mark of the Raven first. They do need to be read in order. I'm so glad that I found this series and I am anxiously anticipating the next!
This book contains non-graphic violence and Christian themes.
So, so good! Many middle books of trilogies lack in the interest department, but this one definitely did not! It was filled with romantic tension, Selene’s character growth, and a continuing battle of Light against darkness. Amara plays a pivotal role in this book, and it is so well done!
It is very clean, but in a closed-door scene.
There are lightly described kisses and mentions of desire. I would rate it as 14+.
You know why the books in this series keep getting five stars from me? Because they're seriously taking me back to my younger years when I'd stay up way too late just to finish "one more chapter."
(in other words, it's late and I'm going to bed now)
(also, how am I supposed to wait for the next book? I'm not used to reading series with cliffhangers anymore-at least not ones where all the books haven't come out already- and I'm IMPATIENT)
Overall Rating : C+
"But I left for the sake of our house. They cycle of hatred and murder needs to be broken. We can't keep going on like this."
description
I debated giving this 2 or 3 stars, but I figure I should've known more about what kind of genre this book was before going in, so I really have no one to blame but myself.
This is Christian/Romance/Fantasy, more heavily on the Christian/romance. I didn't really get that vibe from book one, but I sure did here. There's "the Light" and "the Dark Lady" and this book is really all about how anyone can start believing in "the Light" and turn your back on "the Dark Lady" and saving yourself from torment and darkness.
And the Christian aspect didn't bother me all that much, although some passages where a little hammy and over the top cliche. What I really wanted was more action based, even something politically motivated, but really it was about Selene and Damien. I will admit they made a cute couple, and I do love me a Golden Retriever type of man, but the main plot was lost in favor of them. And they kept tiptoeing around the same issue for practically the whole book.
Amara and Lady Ragna's POV were interesting and kept me focused on the main reason I got into this book. And the cliffhanger did peak my interest. Will definitely read book three since I do want to see how it ends.
Completely wonderful, fantastic, work of art! I absolutely loved this book, and the characters were delightful. It gave me all the feels, it made me swoon, smile, giggle, gasp, close the book in shock, stare in silence, daydream constantly, and uplifted me. all the things I could want in a novel.
This was an amazing book, and one I needed to read right now. I feel like I have so many thoughts to say on this book and so little space to get them down or I don’t even know how to process my thoughts.
I loved Damian even more in this book, and he may not be exactly the type of man I gravitate towards in books, but oh my, a man of God who intercedes in prayer for his wife and does battle by her side? The way he loves her and his people? Ahhh swoon.
I really loved seeing each other the characters growth and the way they changed throughout their journeys from book one to the end of book two, and I’m excited to see where the next book takes them!
I will say I am sad about something that happened at the end but for spoilers I won’t say, but it did resolve and it had hope which was good.
I loved all the faith in this novel and the journey of faith that Seline went on.
Absolutely loved this novel and would recommend this series!!
Beautiful second entry in the Ravenwood Saga. I loved the relationship of Damien and Selene and how that grew and changed throughout the book. Busse has a way of conveying deep emotions without overdramatizing everything, so you can actually take time to FEEL the way the characters feel. Especially in the ending of this, which I won't spoil, but suffice it to say, readers will be waiting with baited breath for book 3!
Reread - Feb, 2020 - still so good! Love everything about Selene and Damien! <3
~~
I've been dying for this book since I read book 1 months ago! I loved iiit! This series is becoming one of my favorites because it has so many epic moving parts, amazing characters, magic, and just this wonderful thread of faith at its core. I've enjoyed everything I've read by Morgan Busse, but this series is for sure her best.
Also Damien and Selene are <3. After the ending of book 1, I'd been dying to get back to their story together and it was adorable awesome. Also, I want a castle by the sea with water bending powers. I'm going to put Northwind Castle and Nor Esen on my list of fantasy locations to visit. lol!
