Rate this book
Years ago, boundary witch Allison “Lex” Luther made a promise to an alpha werewolf. Now, just when the supernatural community in Colorado is enjoying a period of hard-won peace, the alpha turns up at Lex’s door to call in his marker. Two of his pack members have disappeared in the Colorado sand dunes, and he needs safe passage to hunt for them.

With her friend Simon Pellar along for backup, Lex ventures into the dunes to search for the missing couple…but what they find is only the opening move in an ambitious assault against those who hold power in the Colorado Old World. An old enemy has returned to tear their peace apart, and Lex is soon embroiled in politics she doesn’t understand, from a time before she had magic.

To save her friends and her way of life, Lex will have to cross every line she’s drawn since learning what she is—and it may still be too late.

Boundary Broken is an amazing urban fantasy read. The plot twists and turns were unexpected, with a cast of characters that I’ve already come to invest in. Olson binds the reader to her writing with realistic, but totally fictional, characters who have heartfelt emotions and true personal connections to each other.

Lex is an intelligent, kick but character with heart! This was one of those reads that you just didn’t want to end.

I received this ARC copy of BOUNDARY BROKEN from 47North. This is my honest and voluntary review.

Good without being great.
It's an entertaining instalment in the story of Lex Luther, Colorado's very own blood witch.
The book feels a little like a set up for a new story arc.

Boundary Broken
Boundary Magic, Book 4
By: Melissa F. Olson
Narrated by: Kate Rudd
Our Boundary Witch is asked to help an alpha wolf find two missing werewolves. She owed them a favor so she agreed. What they find and what happens right after starts this book off on a wild ride! Lots of unpredictable situations, action, vamps, weres, witches, magic, and twists! Loved the story.
The narration was spot on!

This book was a close call for me. While I enjoyed, I was nervous the author was going the route of Scarlett Bernard.

Let me explain. I enjoyed that series until the start of the new one. She ended the first series with Scarlett choosing my broken surfer werewolf. That made me happy. Nothing against Jessie. He was a good guy and had he been presented as the first love interest, I would have rooted for him. And if Scarlett had chosen no one, I might have accepted the beginning of a new series.

For me personally if a book has romance, I as a reader have hard limits. No cheating, no killing off one to solve a love triangle (Andrea creamer) or no changing good guys into bad to solve love triangle (Shatter Me series). That will black list you from my reading list. Hey, though I expected believability in my story, I’m a hopeless romantic. One a love declarations made in fiction, it should be forever. Hell I stopped reading Outlander because I couldn’t bear Jamie being with someone else even though he had ever right too. I’m funny like that.

So if I hadn’t started this Lex series, what the author did in the opening scene of the next Scarlett series, she would have been dead to me. (I never finished that book past the opening scene). I feel like she caved under fan pressure.

So in the last Lex book and more in this one, I sense a set up for Lex to be with Simon. After the slow burn of Lex and Quinn and the declarations of love, if that happens- if she leaves to be with Simon, I will be done with this author for good.

Outside of that, good installment. Engaging and entertaining. Awesome narrator though I wish the guys would sound different. But alas.

First of all I can not express how much I love this series it just ticks all the boxes for me.

There are few series that can hold my interest for this long and this series is one of them Boundary Broken is the best book so far in the series the story is unfolding in such a way that even after book 4 I'm even more excited about the story than before.

I hav'nt been this excited about a series since The Blood Destiny Series by Helen Harper which is one of my faviour series, all books are out so if you want something to read why waiting for book 5 in Boundary Magic I highly recommend it and it's an if you love this you will like that kind of deal. But back to boundary broken I loved lex's make over it was just so fun an added a lightness to the story that I found refreshing after all the drama can't say much more than that with out giving stuff away.

With Boundary Broken it's somewhere between one and two stars for me.
Things I liked:
-Quinn, I guess. In the first few books I did like his characters. He's very much a stoic, silent type of character. Sometimes, I feel like he's a very flat one dimensional character.

Things I didn't like:
-I really feel like Olson is setting up the books with a love triangle between Simon, Quinn, and Lex. Love triangles are one of my huge pet peeves. I also got super sick of this trope in her Scarlett Bernard series. (Also, why can't Olson leave Simon and Lex as friends? Straight people of the opposite gender CAN be friends.)
-I vaguely remember in past books, the questioning of Lex's and Quinn's relationship. And there is a lot more of it in this book. Which may tie into, Olson re-using a Scarlett storyline in the first Disrupter Magic book, trying to create DRAMA, or making a more prominent love triangle.
-I feel like Lex doesn't seem like Lex anymore. She's written more like Scarlett. And I cannot stand Scarlett.
-All the crossovers. In this book there's was quite a bit of mentions or continued storylines to stuff that has happened in the Disrupted Magic books, which I was extremely confused about because I don't read them because... Scarlett. There was really no recap for readers who don't read the other series.
-Oh look, people trying to kidnap Charlie... again. *weary sigh*
-Lex still knows the bare minimum about the "Old World." Within the book's timeline, it's been three years since the first book. Lex still knows very little about this world. I would think she would know a bit more by now.

Over all, I was deeply unsatisfied with this series and Lex is starting to grate on my nerves very much like Scarlett did. I'll likely not continued this series.

After she finished with the second arc of Scarlett Bernard series, Melissa F. Olson returns to Boulder, Colorado, to give us, readers, the next arc of boundary witch extraordinaire, Allison “Lex” Luther.

The new trouble brewing in Colorado starts when two werewolves come into Lex's house, asking for her help to track down their missing pack members. Lex find the wolves killed - and soon old enemies seem to making new move to stir problem with the supernatural community of Colorado.

Melissa F. Olson has become one of my favorite authors in this genre, ever since I first read Scarlett in Dead Spots six years ago. This is another solid addition to Olson's book portfolio.

I admit that I love Lex and the Colorado gang, slightly better than Scarlett's books. Probably because Lex, being an ex-soldier, feels more level-headed, a genuine protector, compared to Scarlett, who in the beginning, is more of reluctant / passive heroine. I love Lex's relationship with her deceased sister, with her niece, as well as her witches friend.

Boundary Broken is clearly the beginning of something new on the horizon, with old players settling in, a couple of previous faces being killed, and new plan hatched by Maven, the vampire ruler of Colorado. I cannot say much without spoiling anything, because I believe this experience is better read than told. I, for one, cannot wait for the next book, and see how Lex adapt to the situation.

PS: Everything behind the spoiler tag is for me to remember the plot!

*Thoughts*

Boulder boundary witch Allison “Lex” Luther returns in the fourth installment in author Melissa F. Olson's Boundary Magic series. Apparently, the book jumps 2 years from the last book titled Boundary Born, but she did appear in Scarlett Bernard's Shadow Hunt. Lex is a former Army veteran who was left to die, but managed to survive thanks to her previously unknown boundary magic.

This author is one of my favorite urban fantasy writers and her Boundary Magic series is my favorite of her series. There are vampires, werewolves, ghosts and witches in this world. Most of the human population does not know they exist. While each book can be read independently and is a complete story in itself, it is probably best to begin with the first book in the series.

The heroine, Lex, is a boundary witch, which means she has special abilities at the intersection of life and death. She can see and speak with ghosts and help them move on, can 'press' humans and vampires (mind control), and raise the dead. One of the most endearing qualities that Lex has is that she never really seems to appreciate how powerful she is. She works for Maven, the top witch of Colorado, whom she both fears and respects, in a security role (and other duties as required). Lex is ex-military and has many useful talents for someone who can't go out in the daytime.

When this book starts, Lex is helping two ghosts to cross over. She has drawn a circle on the highway, it's after midnight, and there's a witch friend of hers at each end of the road to stop any traffic. This is normal, everyday life for Lex. She has a steady love interest, a vampire who works for Maven also, but the romance is rarely a focus of the books.

So after laying the ghosts to rest, she is sitting in her small house with her boyfriend, the two witches who were helping with the ghosts, and her rescue dogs when the werewolves arrive. And there the action begins and it doesn't let up until the end. There is a lot of violence and some genuinely creepy scenes in this book.

I highly recommend the whole series. All are well written with complex plots, characters who could walk off the page, a little romance, friendship, and a whole lot of suspense. The Old World that exists side by side with the modern day world is a fascinating place to visit.

Netgalley provided me with an ARC in return for an honest review.

I had a lot of fun with this book, mainly because I like Lex and the way Kate Rudd's narration brings her to life. She's brave and loyal. She knows that she's good at tactics but not a strategy. She doesn't see herself as heroic, just as someone doing what needs to be done to protect her niece and support her friends.

This episode of the Boundary Magic series has Lex at the centre all the way through. She doesn't always know what's going on and she loses as many rounds as she wins. What makes the book work is that I cared what happened to her more than I cared about the deviousness of the plot.

The plot has a few good surprises in it to keep me interested but wasn't particularly complex. In terms of story arc development, this felt like a transitional episode, setting up some new possibilities and making changes to the available characters and their relationships. On the basis, it promises well for the future.

I enjoyed the way in which Lex's knowledge and use of her power develops in this book. Her boundary magic has gone from vague to something with a solid internal logic.

This was very much a woman-centric story. There are male players in it, but mostly they are there either to get rescued, get threatened or killed or to strut around being muscular, menacing and dumb. The story is moved forward by women who are strong, bright, sometimes ruthless but very much in charge of what is happening to them. This isn't done in an in your face - look how strong my women are - way. It's subtle enough simply to be the natural outcome of the situation and the players. Still, I can't think of another series that has done this to this extent and made it work so well. I'm taking that as a good sign for the future as well.

As always, the pace is brisk, the stakes are high and the action is vivid. The end slowed down a little, partly to accommodate some of those new possiblities, but it didn't drag.

I still prefer this series to its sister/crossover series with Scarlett Bernard in LA. It feels more grounded to me. I've always preferred Colorado to California, so maybe it's just my prejudice but I find myself more engaged with Lex than with Scarlett.

4+ Stars

Perhaps the best entry in the series to date. I actually like this series better than the one from which it was spun off, Scarlett Bernard. I like the way she set up the next long arc at the end of this one. It wasn't a cliff hanger and didn't feel like it either, nor was it an insipid sneak peek sort of "ending." But it did a good job of keeping me curious about the future of the series.

This is a good urban fantasy series.

Book 4 - I do recommend the series be read in order. So, if you’re looking at this, you enjoyed the first three books. If that’s the case, you’ll enjoy this one as well. Olson is one of the better authors I’ve found available on Kindle Unlimited. Unfortunately, I’ve bought books that aren’t half as well written as these.

I've not spent all that much time in the Urban Fantasy genre of late, though it remains one of my favourites. It was therefore high time to catch up on some unfinished series! I'd read the previous book in this one all the way back in 2017, so as usual with such a lengthy gap between installments, my memory of the world and characters left something to be desired and I wasn't sure how well I'd be able to find my way back in. As it turns out, it took a few chapters, but soon enough Lex and her world had me hooked again - definitely not waiting another eight years before getting to the rest of these!

If this book were a daytime TV drama, I missed several shows

I’ve read all the books of this series, but whilst reading “Boundary Broken,” I kept thinking I missed a book or short story somewhere. I plan to reread the entire series to figure out what I missed or forgotten.

This time I didn’t love Lex as much, because her character hasn’t evolved. Lex of the earlier books had more courage and gumption than current-Lex. It’s book #4 and she’s not as experienced a witch as I’d expected her to be. She hasn’t advanced in knowledge or use of boundary magic. Maven hasn’t made huge demands on her, so it’s curious that Lex hasn’t experimented or tested herself—without relying on Simon or Lily. If she doesn’t practice or use her powers, how does she expect to protect Charlie, let alone herself?

This series just keeps getting better and better. Although I must admit that I received this from the publisher as an ARC-I am going to be buying my own copy because I really want to support this author. I first started reading this series on a whim-I don't normally use my Kindle Unlimited (why? Mostly because I don't expect to find quality reads, but I am so glad I made an exception with this series.Thes books are quality reads).

This book jumps 2 years from the last book, so you need to get used to the fact that Charlie is now a toddler with a vocabulary! It was a little awkward for me at first, but I quickly got over the time jump. I don't know how to discuss the plot without giving away tons of spoilers (and I am really holding myself back from doing so!!!)

There are so many things going on and so many new people especially people that we have only met in passing in this book. An old enemy comes back, many people die or get hurt quite badly, the mystery is very convoluted but in a good way that really keeps you on your toes.

This was a very non-put-downable book filled with action and preying on some of our main characters worst fears and nightmares.

All in all, with the way things ended, I can't wait until book 5 comes out.

I really enjoyed Boundary Broken and I liked seeing Lex in action - I really think the former solder and Boundary witch is a great character and this story had lots of things for her to do. With conspiracies in the background coming to light when Lex's attempt to repay a debt goes so wrong the story stays in motion the whole way through and the ending opens up a very interesting future for Lex and the Colorado supernaturals. Hopefully, we don't have to wait too long to see what happens next because the next book shifts back to Scarlett -though I am not complaining as she has some interesting things in store for her too. I have really have become a fan of Olson's Old World - of both the Scarlett and Lex books and all of the shorts.

ARC via Netgalley, this is an unpaid review and all opinions are my own.

This author is easily my favorite author right now. Love how her novels blend reality with fantasy and how the mystery and suspense drive the plot. The characters are really well illustrated and the pacing and editing are perfect - no sluggish spots or glaring errors to trip me up and take me out of the story. I predicted a few things, but there was still a lot of surprises. If you've made it this far in the series, then I don't need to expound on anything. Just know it is more of the excellent writing I've come to expect from this author. Loved it and can't wait for the next!

4.5 (A-)
4.5 for narration by Kate Rudd.

These books all build on the previous books and won't do well as stand-alones. I highly recommend you start with Boundary Crossed to understand the character dynamics and world-building. This review will contain some spoilers from previous books.

Boundary Broken takes place about 2-3 years after Boundary Born ends. In the interim Lex has continued to work for Maven, the cardinal vampire of Colorado, in exchange for Maven keeping Lex's niece Charlie, a rare null, safe from the old world. She is also still with Quinn, her vampire boyfriend and Maven's security expert. At the moment, Lex is restless since Maven has had little for her to do as her daytime errand runner/security. The boredom ends one night when Ryan, the head of a Wyoming werewolf pack who helped defeat the enemy in Boundary Born, comes to call in the favor Lex owes him. Two of his werewolves have disappeared while in Colorado scouting out a place for the pack to run on the next full moon. The trip was sanctioned by Maven, and the werewolves want Lex to help them locate the werewolves. Lex, accompanied by Simon the witch, agree to help. But something much bigger is happening than a couple of missing werewolves, and figuring out how everything fits together is proving complicated. What Lex and company find and what happens next proves to be the tip of a large iceberg with far-reaching implications for all of the old world in Wyoming and Colorado.

The plot is very well done, complex and fast-paced, and a notch above so much urban fantasy being written today. My only complaint was one part of the story where I felt lost. I barely remember Katia from Boundary Born. She's the sister of Lex's mother. In this book however, she play a large role and I keep getting the feeling I've missed something, and I'm supposed to know a lot more about her backstory than I do. While I finally just rolled with it, there were parts of the book where I felt, "Was I supposed to know that?"

Kate Rudd does her usual great job with the narration. She does a decent job keeping all the main characters distinct, although some of the side characters have voices close to some of the main characters. But overall, I'm definitely enjoying these books on audio.

With Every Book, I am Drawn Another Step Further into the Old World

My sister and embarked on the Old World Journey a bit out of order, beginning with the Boundary Magic Series. I loved Lex, almost immediately - she was badass before she discovered her magic and I knew she'd continue to grow in interesting ways throughout the series. After finishing the series, we found the Old World series reading order and went back to take in Scarlett's Story. I think, because we started out of order, we understood the (ingenious) way the stories from each series intertwined. This book was awesome, because it continued to bring together all of the characters ans storylines that have been introduced between the Los Angeles and Boulder stories while having a fascinating plotline involving the changing scene in Colorado. The book drew the storyline to a close neatly, but left a promise of more to come.

Something else I appreciate about this book and its author is the appreciation of the history and atmosphere of the setting of the stories. I greatly enjoy reading the author's acknowledgments and knowing the research that went into using true (or at the very least rumored) locations. The stories add places to visit to my future travels and that is pretty cool in my opinion!

Read this book, but start at the beginning of the Old World Series and read them in the order they were released for the best possible enjoyment. Also, in case anyone is reading this review and deciding to start the series for the first time, be patient with the opening Scarlett Bernard Series. It was good and I enjoyed it, but it seriously continues to get better and better as you meet Lex and return to Scarlett for more! I promise by the time you make it all the way to this book, you'll be considering the possibilities and awaiting the announcement of future books.

This story begins with a werewolf calling in a favor. Lex had promised to help him and now he needs safe passage into Colorado to hunt for a couple of missing pack members. Lex goes along with witch Simon Pellar to help locate them. They find their bodies but that only deepens the mystery. When the werewolf who called Lex in is caught and murdered before he can get out of the State with his packmates bodies, Lex feels that there was something else she could have done to change things.

What Lex doesn't know is that the deaths of the werewolves is only the first move in a well-thought out plan to disrupt things in Colorado. The villain wants to change rulership of the covens of witches and grab power from Lex's boss Maven. To do this, the villain threatens Lex's four-year-old niece Charlie who is a null and under the protection of Maven.

Between conflicts among the witches, conflicts among the werewolves, conflicts with the vampires including her boyfriend Quinn, and Lex's own magic which she still doesn't know very much about, Lex has her hands full in this episode.

Even though it has been years since I read the first three books in this series, I felt right at home here. I really like Lex and the magical world that Melissa F. Olson has built.

Every single time. It happens to me every single time: I forget how much I enjoy this author until I read a book by her. As in the previous books I’ve read by her, this book is well-written, has a totally fascinating plot, and has wonderful characters. I didn’t think I could love Lex as a character any more than I already did, but she is just so full of heart and real. I wish we had gotten to see Quinn more in this book but maybe in the next one. And speaking of the next one, I am so anxious to see what’s coming next! I had to actually force myself to put the book down to get some sleep. We get to see old enemies, some people we knew get killed, old faces come to town, and a new enemy. How’s that for not giving away too much?!? This book is the fourth book in Lex’s story, but since it’s the beginning of a new story arc, it’s kinda like a first one. If you love great urban fantasy, give this one a try; you will not regret it! I highly recommend this book and was provided a copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

What is a boundary witch? A boundary witch can see ghosts and lay them to rest by using blood magic. It’s a little bit more involved than that, but you get the gist of things. I love this concept, and oh, the adventures to be had!

Boundary Broken is the 4th book in the Boundary Magic series. Of course, this is where I start in the series. I enjoyed this novel enough to buy the first book and begin my journey on catching up. I didn’t feel lost in the series. Melissa F. Olson carried me through this book, and I had no problem following along with current events. Although, I am intrigued about everyone’s history now.

I think my favorite aspect of the storyline was the paranormal politics. I didn’t feel overburden with politics. There was just enough there to give the storyline a solid base. There was a nice variety of paranormal people and plenty of suspense! The only con that I had was the monotone voice in which the story was told. As great as the storyline was, it didn’t grab me like it should have.

I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book, so I could give an honest review.

Boundary Broken by Melissa F. Olson a five-star read that will break your boundary’s. This is the forth novel in the Boundary magic series and each one just gets better than the last, I would recommend that you read them in order as we do get to see characters in this one that we have met in earlier books. This one came at just the right moment, I was sick and feeling rotten and bored stuck in bed then this one dropped and made my day. It takes you on a journey and it will lead you on so many trips, just when we discover what happened to the missing wolves something else is amiss and will astound you as well. The Colorado Old world is a place that will take you to a different world. Lex will make you feel for every character in this story, she has a way of sucking you in, but not sucking you dry, she leaves that to her other half. This is a thrilling series and I for one can’t wait for more from Melissa F. Olson

Olson's books are fun. They're the perfect thing when I just want to relax and not think too hard about anything. Boundary Broken was good, but not great. It wasn't as compelling as I usually find her stories. That said, I still enjoyed my time with the book. Boundary Broken is definitely a setup for a larger arc in the series, and I look forward to seeing where the setup goes.

Short Review: Great new installment to the series. It was even better than I hoped for.

---

86 points, 4 ½ stars!

Wow, Boundary Broken was a great installment to this series. I've always liked Lex and her boyfriend, Quinn. This series was always better than the Scarlet Bernard ones. I like what Lex gets up to, I love how Quinn helps and supports her. Also I really like Lex's powers.

It has been a while since I read these books, nearly a year now, so I had forgotten a bit about the story. I'm actually surprised that Melissa F. Olson decided to continue on under this series name than make a new one, like she did for Scarlett. Luckily, this managed to remind me of everything I had forgotten over the course of the last year easily enough. It did a good job of it, even. However, I think new readers would be a little lost. This story takes place three years after the previous book's events, so there is quite a jump. However, a lot of references to prior events were brought up, but weren't really explained.

Actually, a lot of Boundary Broken is treading old ground. There are old allies that we team up with against old enemies who are playing off of the same playbooks as before. It is quite a repeat. The only reason I wasn't lost was because I had read the previous books before. If you haven't read them, and are looking to maybe jump in here, it would be a mistake. Yet for continuing readers, this new start to the series is great. It sets up the direction this series is going to take from now on very well. I'm looking forward to reading the rest in a way I wasn't before I read this.

Boundary Broken is fun because the characters are fun and the story is well laid out. It isn't just Lex and Quinn I enjoy, it is all of their friends and their Boss and Lex's family. They are all great people I enjoy having around. The prejudice the Old World has against each other, where every group hates and distrusts the other groups? That grew really old by the end of the book. I'm afraid there might be more of that throughout the rest of this arc of the series.

Overall, though, I really enjoyed reading this. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more in this series.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to Melissa F. Olson, 47North, and Netgalley for providing this copy for review!

Book 4 of Boundary Witch series by Mellissa F Olson
Lex is starting to get everything back on track. She and Quinn are slowly building a relationship and getting into a lower pace with her rescue dogs and babysitting Charlie.
While the slower life is better with less injuries but Lex is feeling bored and useless.
Lex gets contacted by the local werewolf pack asking for help to find there missing pack-mates, so Lex gets in contact with Maven Vampire Queen for Colorado.
This book is a slow burning for me but it kinda has to be for the story and characters to develop properly to fully so when things come to a head things drop into place and all the confusing questions get answered.
Absolutely love this story and even though old enemies come back and cause havoc again it doesn’t feel like a repeat at all.
Fantastic ending and absolutely love this series and spin off series Scarlett Bernard

Sooo good!

I LOVED this one!! As usual, every word Melissa F. Olson touches turns to gold. I will anxiously await her next piece.
