A Montecito car collection gives up dark family secrets in Book 1 in Kat Drennan's "A Classic Car Romance" series.
Maddie is known at Midwest auto auctions as the tall, hot babe in the tight jumpsuit and red stilettos. To take her car restoration company to the next level, she must sell a prized family heirloom: a one of a kind, '53 Cadillac Eldorado in Mint Condition.
Maddie's senses go into overdrive when the gorgeous California investor, Nick Berlin, shows up with a blank check in his hand and an irresistible gleam in his eye. It's obvious he knows nothing about classic cars, but when Maddie invites him behind the wheel, he's ready to push the pedal down.
Then a letter from her estranged father claims ownership of the car and Maddie puts the brakes on the sale to launch a road trip across country to confront her past and Nick must decide how far he's willing to go to get his hands on her chassis.
Native Californian, Kat Drennan is all about beach, desert, mountains, and sun and her books reflect these settings. Her stories are rich with original characters, picturesque settings, and a voice that draws readers deep into the story. Always with a hint of humor and sharp emotion, her books include epic fantasy, historical time travel, romance, and women's fiction.
When she's not writing or romping with her grand kids, she loves to bike, swim, and run outdoors.
Mint Condition is a fast-paced, highly entertaining read that will keep you up late at night reading because you don't want to put it down. I was immediately down in to the story and had to force myself to stop reading so I could feed my kids. It is seriously that good.
I love the characters, who are smart, witty and likable with all their quirks and flaws. They meet and bond over an adventure that has highs and lows, excitement, drama and, of course, sizzling romance.
The story is well written, intriguing and well edited, with very few grammatical errors. I felt like I was flying down the highway in that old Caddie with Maddie and Nick. I felt their excitement, their grief, their fear and their happiness. This book gave me all the feels....what else could you ask for in a romance novel??
Don't pass this one up, folks! Five enthusiastic stars all the way!
Recommend to readers of romance and romantic suspense. My cold little heart often doesn't relate well to romance but I loved this book. Essentially a romance but also a road trip and an intriguing mystery based around a classic car. Maddie and Nick appear to come from different worlds but they soon discover as well as growing up with an absent parent, their respective families share a dangerous past that will impact both of them. Believable feisty characters and a fast paced read that kept me intrigued throughout. Alongside a romance facing impossible odds the mystery surrounding the car's history piqued my interest and kept me on tenterhooks as well as any thriller. Very enjoyable.
Mint Condition first attracted me because California was the backdrop. I’m an Aussie who left a big chunk of my heart in California along with part of my family. Returning through the pages of this easy to read romance and adventure page turner was a joy filled reading experience. With great characters, including that Mint Condition, one off, '53 Cadillac Eldorado and what is sure to be a happily ever after romance, I’m certain others will love this book every bit as much as I did.
This was such a great read! It's not often I come across a book which manages to fall into both the crime and romance genres, so Mint Condition was a rare find! The characters are real and multi-layered and the relationship between Nick and Maddie felt genuine. I loved the way the romantic scenes were interspersed with action and characters you love to hate like Ray and Nicholas Senior. This was my first book by Kat Drennan and I'm definitely looking forward to reading more from her!
This is a fun romance mixed up with a crime story. The two main characters are both suitably hot and easy to like. It takes time for love to flourish and their family backstory is a serious complication, which adds an exciting edge to the story. There are some suitably evil types who pop up at various points in the story to put Maddie and Nick's love affair and lives in danger. At the heart of the story is an unusual road trip and an extremely valuable classic Cadillac, which provided an imaginative setting for both the crime and romance elements of the story. Definitely an entertaining book!
Crime and romance meet in this action packed story!
Maddie's Grandfather has passed away. In order to keep her auto shop, she finds herself needing to sell an a prized family car - a '53 Cadillac. All of a sudden everyone is interested in the car including Maddie's estranged father and a rich hot guy.
We first met Madonna, “Maddie”, when she is burying her beloved grandfather. At the burial, she meets an unexpected and handsome visitor, Nick Berlin. Maddie had previously placed an ad to sell her beloved 53’ Cadillac Eldorado, which Nick is interested in looking at the car at the request of his father. Nick is a handsome, rich, playboy that is enjoying his freedom. But, Maddie is not fool. She is educated, beautiful, and runs her own car restoration business, and, girl, is darn good at it!
Maddie has been raised by her grandfather in Kentucky as her father dumped her off there when she was just a little girl. After the funeral, she finds some interesting information about her father and his whereabouts. Maddie decides to head to California and confront her father for disappearing out of her life and to sell her car at a premiere auction.
As Maddie heads to California, Nick is sure to follow. What Maddie doesn’t know is that Nick isn’t the only one that wants her prize possession. There are other hunting Maddie and her car as well.
Now this is not your typical romance story, this story has mystery, intrigue, and has you reading pages as fast as you can to see what could possibly happen next. This book absolutely blew me away with the sexual tension, passion, romance, mystery and suspense.
Madonna (Maddie) Kerrigan is a hot young woman who can’t help but feel attracted to Nicholas (Nick) Berlin, Jr. when he shows up unexpected wanting to buy her grandfather’s butter yellow ‘53 Cadillac Eldorado. With sea green eyes that make you feel like you could swim in them, he makes Maddie forget about her Mad Monkey restoration business and focus on love. I have never read a book before written by Kat Drennan and I’d say this was a very good way to introduce her into my lifestyle of reading. Kat has written several books that include Mint Condition, Borrego Moon, The Goddess of Undo, and Blue Flame Six. Maddie has been raised on her grandfather’s Kentucky farm working on the Flying Goddess, but when she meets Nick, who is interested for the sake of his father, her emotions are thrown out of whack and so are both of their hearts. A heat-of-the-moment decision ends up with Maddie and Bébé in the Flying Goddess, who takes an iron fist grip on your heart, road-tripping across the U.S. to find her father out in California. She is lucky to find a partner when Nick has a change of heart and follows after her, finding her sleeping in her car outside a hotel. Things only go up from there.
Right from the opening when Maddie attends her grandfather's funeral I had no idea where this story was going. When Maddie meets a too-hot-to-trot young man at the funeral, it further complicated matters as if Maddie has little control over sexual chemistry, then she certainly had zero control over the yearnings of her heart. Of course, all is not what it seems and very definitely that goes for the fish out of water visitor, Nick Berlin, Jr. who, wondering why he was arriving at a funeral where he didn't know a soul, he at first thinks that he was given the wrong address. Ever since this cute meet (at the most unlikeliest of places, indeed) I was rooting for the pair but true love never does run smooth and like two magnets attracted by the forces of nature, they get together only to be parted not long after. What keeps them apart? A car! Well, not just any old car but a certain mint condition classic Cadillac, the kind that men especially lose their heads over. Of course a past history that even they know little about has a huge part to play and seeing them find out their shared past connections is all a pleasurable part of the ride. And hopefully, more of the story to come...
At first I thought the book is boring and then zoom when the road trip begins, the books get exciting to read. I cannot put it down until the last page. Mad Monkey and The Flying Goddess is your best buddy travel trip
If you love classic cars, then this book is one way for you not to miss. Maddie will also make you dig for your hidden gems to win for the auction car she is selling. This girl is sexy, tough but so emotional with family problems buried in the past. It was dig and solved when the handsome Nick came to her Grandpa's burial. The chemistry is intense and undeniable between these two.
This book is suspense too. You might need some tissues. You will also adore Bebe the dog with her sloppiness. Mint Condition is also a sexy tease, very hot, heart-thumping and very emotional book. One of the best marriage proposal you will read. Love is worth bidding.
I cannot wait the second book. I am looking forward for more adventures.
An enjoyable romance with a few twists. I'm not generally interested in cars but I was intrigued with the author's knowledge and expertise on the making and workings of the Cadillac Eldorado.
The story, beginning at grandfather's funeral, carried on at a steady pace. There were great descriptive prose, which took me right into the story. I was racing with it but it did stall a little, for me half way through and seemed to slow a little after that to the end.
I thought that Maddie was a strong, well developed character with a natural flow to her dialogue. This was a romance, and it was very well portrayed, however there were also some very nice surprises and twists in there, as an added bonus.
What a great read! Nick and Maddie are made-for-each-other fresh, the secondary characters are 3-D believable, the heroine’s dog plops her butt right down into your heart, and even the bad guys had my sympathy (except for the real villain, of course). The plot twists across the Midwest, landing in California with a shocking discovery. The heat cranks up from there, driven by an eight cylinder, ‘53 butter yellow Cadillac Eldorado trouble magnet.
Mint Condition is a satisfying page turner with a Happily Ever After that has me anxious for the next in Kat Drennan’s Classic Love series. (I hope she writes fast.)
Flow wasn't quite right but enjoyable. Enjoyable romance with fun, well-rounded characters, but the story flow wasn't quite right. The point that I would consider the climax came in the middle of the book rather than at the end of act three. The result was I kept thinking the book was winding down when really I was only half way through. It made the book feel super crazy long. Still a good book but it could use a little tweaking. Also needed another round of editing.
Maddie our heroine has depth and honesty that separate her from the usual beautiful leading lady. This romantic mystery has a little bit of everything we read mysteries for. Maddie encounters death, a new love, car thieves, old friends, a sad truth about her father, and finds new friends along her journey. Just when the reader thinks that all the loose ends might be tied up, another secret from the past keeps the action moving. All in all if you love mysteries and intrigue with a bit of romance on the side, you love Mint Condition.
I love a good romance with a fast paced plot. I also love a strong heroine who can take care of herself, and can handle what life throws at her. Maddie is that kind of heroine. Nick, the hero is a suit wearing kind of stud. When he meets Maddie, who's more at home with a wrench in her hand than in a dress and heels, her strength and vitality remind him what it's like to really live. you'll love the dynamics between these two, while enjoying a thoroughly entertaining plot.
This is a great Contemporary Romance to just get away and get lost in a book for a little while. The characters are lovable and relatable from the beginning. You really care for them and what is going on in their life. I loved the car aspect that Kat Drennan brought in to the story. It was something different and I personally am not a huge classic car fan, but I could tell the author knew what she was talking about.
This is an intriguing thriller and a great romance story all in one. A stranger appears at the funeral of Maddie's grandfather. The question marks pop up left right and center as we learn that Maddie's father left her with said grandfather years ago. Who is the stranger and what is his agenda? With the chemistry between Maddie and said stranger, this gets interesting really quickly and never lets up. Very enjoyable, definitely recommended for fans of the genre.
A fun and romantic book with plenty of suspense and unexpected twists and turns that kept me turning the pages. The writing style is enjoyable and easy to read. Maddie and Nick are really attaching characters and I loved their relationship, dialogues and the chemistry that there was between them. I have to mention Bebe too :-) just so cute. All in all, I really enjoyed this book from beginning to end and couldn't put it down. Well done to the author and looking forward to the next one.
A romantic story that is fun, suspenseful, and an interesting plot with twists and turns. I love that the story is in California. I love that the story features classic cars, and the author knows her way around cars. I love that the story has emotional depth.
Mint Condition is a well-written story with very likeable characters, and adorable dog, that you will want to invest into. I really enjoyed this book, I am looking forward to reading the entire series.
A really good read with a lot of stuff going on in it. Plenty of twists and turns in this one. Kept me turning the pages. Well written and a good plot line. Didn't hurt that I know cars and this really appealed to me on that level. Great romance, I'm looking forward to the next installment.
Mint Condition by Kat Drennan is the first in a series called Classic Love, which focuses on romance centred around classic cars. Now, if you're a car buff, that should be enough on its own to make you want to read this book. In Mint Condition, we find the classic setup for romance. A rich, successful, young Real Estate CEO from California meets a sassy, smart, beautiful young mechanic from Kentucky. The sparks fly the instant these two set eyes on each other, but neither of them fully understands the many strands of their family's histories that are linked together. What follows is a wonderfully, fun, at time steamy, but always fascinating trip across country to deliver a classic Cadillac to the auction in California. Nick and Maddie try hard to make this explosive new relationship work and each realises they need each other, but both are harboring things that could wreck the blooming relationship. In many way, there two young lovers are perfect cases of two people suffering for the sins of their fathers. Throw in a long-forgotten jewel heist, some shady characters and you have all the ingredients for a fast-paced, romantic adventure. I really did enjoy reading this and my interest is definitely piqued to check out the second book in this series, which focuses on Nick's brother and his relationship with his "ex" fiancee. Drennan had written an excellent, solid, romantic adventure. It is clearly her genre and she's good at it. I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who likes an action romance. A good, solid four stars from this reviewer.
When Maddie advertises The Flying Goddess, her 1953 Cadillac Eldorado Special Edition, she causes a stir in the classic car collectors’ community. The beautiful car with its “Dagmar Bumpers” is truly special, since only made five hundred and thirty two of them were manufactured.
Nick leaves sunny California to trek across the country to Kentucky during the earliest, heaviest snowstorm in recent history. He’s intrigued by the gorgeous Maddie, a grease monkey with a sense style. She owns the Mad Monkey, her car restoration business.
Maddie and Nick share an important problem: issues with their fathers. What they don’t realize is the bond is like the hand of destiny. The hand latches onto the steel cable of fate, winching them nearer and nearer their potential doom. An unseen enemy is stalking them, determined to get the car, and its secret contents, no matter what—or who—it costs.
Kat Drennan expertly combines steamy romance and exciting suspense into a book that keeps the reader enthralled until the last twist and surprise turn. I liked Luke, Nick’s brother, and his “ex”-finance Gina. I’m looking forward to reading their story in the next book.
This is a fine romance thriller that will appeal to a wide range of readers. The book has good depth and the main protagonist, Maddie, is a classic car enthusiast who knows her stuff. As a male, the romance was okay, but the characters and their situations add a great deal of quality to the story. Layered on the romance is a road trip, tragedy, shocks & twists, perversions, disloyalty, and past secrets, all of which bring intensity to the love and intimacy story arc. The characters are well rounded and developed, easy to engage with, and interact believably well including the pet dog. The goodies and baddies are well positioned for a good vs bad showdown that doesn't disappoint. I liked the writers style, easy to follow and understand and the pace kept me turning the pages. Highly recommended.
This was a wonderful romantic suspense. The blend between romance, which was both beautiful and steamy, and suspense was perfect. The plot involved family secrets, intrigue, crime and a touch of mystery that had me hooked from the start. Things moved at a fast pace, with some really thrilling parts as the story started to roll toward the climax. There were also a lot twists, many I didn’t see coming.
The characters were fantastically drawn. Maddie and Nick, while instantly attracted to each other, had a whole lot of obstacles both internally and externally between them. But wow there was some hot chemistry there. Maddie is a strong, well-rounded, easy to like and believable character. Nick is handsome and troubled, my kind of hero. I even found myself sympathizing with the bad guys, a few of them.
I was in the mood for a good romance and I picked up this book and was not disappointed. Maddie Kerrigan's grandfather has died, and a strange, handsome CEO turns up in a limo at the funeral. He's interested in the car she's listed for sale. Maddie restores classic cars and Nick is interested in more than the car on offer. It kicks off into a cross country road trip that has many ups and downs, twists and turns as it seems Nick is not the only one who'd love to get his hands on the Goddess. It's an excellent book, well written and the turns of phrase fit perfect in the prose. I loved it, and will be keeping an eye on this author for more good writing. Recommended to those who love a good love story!
