I bought this book as a member of the USCHS. It started out OK, but the last section was unbearably dry and I ended up skimming the second half of the book.
Valuable narrative of early Washington, D.C., focusing on the Capitol Hill area, from its selection as the U.S. capital in the 1790s through the collapse in land values during the Panic of 1819. I met a bunch of new historical personalities, including Daniel Carroll, the most prominent founder-developer, and August Kollner, whose paintings depict early Washington buildings now gone. Writing is shared by three authors, and in general is readable if not snappy.
