PAIGE
People say Derek Gentry is arrogant, perpetually drunk and good for only one thing.
Even from a distance he's like a neon sign that reads: ‘I AM THE WORST IDEA YOU EVER HAD.’
And I’m not tempted, no matter how hot he is.
I’ve heard the rumors. I know his story.
But I’ve got my own scars. I don’t need his.
Despite his muscled, blue-eyed good looks, he’s definitely just heartbreak wrapped in a seductive package.
However, I didn’t plan on falling into his arms on the worst night of my life.
I didn’t plan on initiating a chain reaction of events that neither of us saw coming.
And I didn’t plan on needing him so much I can hardly stand it…

DEREK
Everyone has a history.
Mine’s a little worse than most.
I’ve hurt my family. I’ve hurt people I never even knew. I’ve hurt myself.
And I’ve been hiding at the bottom of a bottle for so long I’m not sure how to do things differently.
At first Paige didn’t seem like the type who would ever be able to handle a guy like me.
Little did I know what kind of mysteries she’s been keeping inside.
Now I can’t get her out of my head.
We could help each other.
Or we could destroy each other.
Right now it’s anyone’s guess.

Test brings up back to the Gentry family with a bit of a heavier story surrounding Derek Gentry. After screwing up in a pretty big way he's now labeled himself the black sheep of the family and is trying to battle his demons on his own. But then he meets Paige on one of the worst nights of her life and finds himself drawn to her like never before. She has her own demons that she's trying to fight away but maybe for them two broken people can make each other whole again.

I really liked the emotion turn this book took on the Gentry Generations series and it made me feel so much more connected to this family than I already did. Seeing them come together to help Derek and be there to support him when not even he realized he needed it was just very amazing to read. And then seeing how he was with Paige just brought all the warm and fuzzy feeling along with even more emotion from seeing them both struggle.

I thought there was still a great deal of romance in the book, which I loved, but the focus was definitely more on what struggles these characters were dealing with. So then I was slightly disappointed when there wasn't more of a clear ending on that but I could weirdly also understand why there wasn't. Which had me a little conflicted on the end. But either way this is certainly a book I recommend reading and it can be read as a standalone with no problem.

ARC kindly provided in exchange for an honest review.

I was looking for a nice simple romantic read when I came across this. It turns out this wasn’t the light read I’d expected.

Derek and Paige meet when they need each other the most. And together they work. But these two are young and they carry so much baggage between them.

This book deals with two difficult subjects. And while it’s an interesting well written book it just wasn’t the book I wanted.

This book is aptly named as it will test your emotions from start to finish. Derek and Paige’s story is not an easy one, it is about two broken people on a path of self destruction. Test will break your heart, make you cry but ultimately it will give you faith in learning from your mistakes. It is a journey of not only true love but healing and reclamation. It is a story of inspiration, breaking the cycle and forgiveness. A powerful love between two people that may at times bring you to your knees but will also fill your heart and soul to the brim.

The next member of the Gentry family, Derek, gets his HEA!

I really enjoyed this book. While this is a NA romance, it deals with some pretty heavy topics. However, Cora Brent does an amazing job with those topics. She does not sugar coat or romanticize addiction and self-harm, but she does not overpower the romantic nature of the book either. The underlying romance is really sweet. These two, slighty broken people share a traumatic experience and find comfort in each other after.

I appreciate that while Derek and Paige find comfort in each other that slowly becomes more, the book didn't ignore or magically fix their issues. Derek's issues with alcoholism provided conflict more than once and the reactions of his family were realistic and loving. I liked that Brent approached these topics without being preachy. However, Paige has her own issues and while they were discussed, there was less focus on her issue, which, in my opinion, is just as major as Derek's and equally as important.

The best part of this book is the sweet romance between Derek and Paige that starts off as a slow simmer and builds until the very end. It progresses organically, for the most part. There is a slight bit of outside interference from Derek's younger brother, Kellan. It was sweet and I was rooting so hard for these two.

A great addition to the Gentry family! Derek and Paige will steal your heart.

Test by Cora Brent is book four in her Gentry Generations Series and it blew me away. The previous books are Strike, Turn and Keep. Every book is about another couple and can totally be read as standalone.

Test is Paige and Derek's story. It's raw and gritty, but wonderful at the same time.
Paige is a young woman who's a bit of a drifter. She works at a pizzeria, inherited a house, but has no clue what to make of her life. She hasn't a lot of family or friends and is a bit of a recluse, a loner.
Derek Gentry is the black sheep of the family, if there could be one black sheep among the Gentry's.
He's fresh from jail, works at the garage his uncles own and has a hard battle at his hands. I will not spoiler here, only so much, he struggles daily, hourly. He has a strong network of family who wants to help him. He's loved and cared for.
Paige and Derek meet and while they both battle their demons, they're not a match made in heaven. Both bear scars, visible and invisible.
Test is written in a dual POV, the writing is excellent and the story captured me from the beginning. It had me at the edge of my seat - I read their book in one sitting - I couldn't put it down.
Favorite Quote: " Great stories never begin at college parties . " - but sometimes they do and sometimes they turn into a great love story.
I recommed Test and give 5 + stars.

This book is heavy. It's real. And I could not put it down. I have read the entire Gentry family and generations books. This book was heavy on my soul. Life is not perfect and both Derek and Paige have been dealt rough hands and meet in an unfortunate situation. They are drawn to one another and have to decide if they are ready to show each other how ugly life can really be sometimes. I will tell you there is a happy ending and I really hope there is more Gentry’s because I'm invested y’all, like I'm expecting to be invited to a BBQ.

Ahh the Gentry family. How we love them. If only the author could continue to write books dedicated to this fictional family. I think we would all be a little happier in life.
Derek battling some demons meets Paige in a time where they both needed each other the most. The love I felt for these characters is almost inexplicable. You can't help but to fall in love with them individually as well as a couple. There was no quick head over heels in love for these characters. They started off slow and brought their feelings to boil. I loved the author's take on Derek's issues. But I would have loved to see a little more depth when it came to Paige's. Filled with so many emotions this book is part of a series. But I feel could be read as a standalone. - By Vanessa

Another fantastic read by Cora Brent! Absolutely loving the second generation Gentry series. Derek and Paige meet by chance during a horrible incident. From there they lean on each other while fighting separate battles within themselves. Every day is a struggle but together they find determination and love. Definitely well written and I didn’t want to put this down. I can not wait for Kellan’s story.

Paige and Derek this is their story .
They each have lived though troubles and struggles to come out on the other side. They are drawn to each other but know that this is not going to be easy. You have to show the real you and hope that "the one "can accept you for all your flaws. This is not your cookie cutter romance. It is real, raw and a challenge . Sometimes you need to take a chance to on yourself and others to have a future !!
Great Story!!

I loved this one. Reading Derek’s struggle was really sad and I think it could of went a little more into his recovery more and really went into Paige’s recovery because that kinda was skipped over but I’ll look pst that haha. I really enjoy this series and can’t wait to see who’s next. I have a good idea 🤗

I tried, making it halfway before throwing in the towel.
Both of the characters have issues. His alcohol addiction. Hers an eating disorder. Neither of them should be with the other.

Third book in this series. I haven't had the chance to read the first two but I will be. You can read this as a stand alone. Derek leads a difficult live. One that he can lose at any minute. He ends up doing something that will change his life. I enjoyed this book because it deals with every day life problems. It is a book that you can relate to easily. Cora did an amazing job writing this one and it is a book that you can easily enjoy. The characters were amazing and the storyline was gripping. I do recommend this one and cant wait to read more from this series and writer.

I can never EVER get enough of this family. I care so deeply about what happens to them it's unbelievable!

I've been dying for Derek's story after what happened to him. Thankfully we didn't have to wait too long for it.

Derek is struggling. Ever since the incident which landed him in prison for a while he's trying to stay sober, but being young and staying away from alcohol is hard. His brother is partying up at college. Going to parties, getting wasted and hooking up with random girls for one night is all he knows so he's struggling to keep himself away from temptation. One night he's alone and his demons are chasing him. He gives in and goes to buy himself a bottle of something that will make him feel better. What he didn't expect was to end up being a hero and finding a girl that triggers something inside him he's never felt before.

Paige is stuck at a dead end. Having had her fair share of trauma she's settled for working in a pizzeria and living on her own in a huge house which was her grandparents. She's all alone as her uncle is pretty useless and her mom disappeared on her years before. All she has is her two best friends. She's not sure where she fits in life and finds it hard having no control. She resorts to her own kind of addiction to help herself have some form of control. It's not helping much any more but she can't stop. One night after work she finds herself needing to be rescued and when she falls, she falls straight into Derek's arms and for once in her life she feels safe and protected.

Derek can't let her or the feelings she brings on in him go. He finds out where she lives and goes to check on her. Paige is feeling jumpy and alone and when Derek turns up on her doorstep she can't hide her reaction to him and doesn't want to.

With both of them fighting their own battles they truly are in for a rocky road to happiness.

GAH!! These two!!! I mean obviously i loved Derek anyway. He's his father's son and who can stop themselves from loving the imperfectness of them all? But Paige. Awww i love her. She wears her heart on her sleeve and that's probably what attracted Derek to her. All the Gentry's do this so she fits in perfectly.

Often not an easy story to read with both of them battling their own demons you knew it would come to head at some point and when it did it was truly heartbreaking. There may or may not have been a little bit of eye leakage but i promise it's worth it.

The storyline was handled perfectly. The subject's in this book were often uncomfortable to read but i loved that nothing was sugar coated over. Addictions not only affect the person they possess but also the family and friends that surround them. The scenes with Derek and his family, particularly his brothers in this regard broke me. I loved how as a family they called him out and wouldn't let him go it alone no matter how much he pushed them.

Obviously seeing all the Gentry's made me smile big it's always great to catch up with them all and i love seeing glimpses of them in this series.

The plot kept me turning those pages. The love these two had between them made my heart soar and the ending was pure magic. It was never going to be easy but it was perfect anyway.

Love love loved it!! Highly recommend this book and all the others in this series. In fact ever book this author writes is an automatic one click for me always.

Sighhhhh, Derek.

Man, my heart broke for him in the novella of Curtis and Dalton. I wasn't sure how this one was going to go.
Derek is Stephanie and Chase's son, and true to the blurb, he's made a huge mistake that cost him so much. Driving drunk after the wedding, he ended up not only killing someone during a car accident in which he was driving, but it happened to be the brother of his cousin's husband. Naturally, living with that would take it's toll on anyone, and he has such a good heart, he's Chase's son, how could he not? Unfortunately, addiction doesn't care about how good a person is. Derek is an alcoholic.

Paige has a secret of her own, which I truly understood. Eating disorders and compulsions that she had were very well written. Some may not understand it, but it's an addiction in its own way too.
Having been left by her mother at a young age and having lost the grandparents that raised her, she really only had herself. I mean, sure, she has an Uncle that's married to a snake of a woman who I did not like, and two very best friends that had her back, no questions asked.... but left with a big ol' house and a penchant for avoiding people and social situations, Paige was lonely.

After a party one night where both Paige and Derek leave early, they find themselves at the same gas station where Derek comes to rescue and makes Paige feel like, for the first time, even after a tramatic experience where someone almost died... he makes her feel like everything might be okay. And Paige makes Derek feel for the first time, well... anything other than guilt at hurting his family, hurting himself and the mistake that he made.
I loved watching these two try to navigate a healthy relationship, where both of them had to want to change. It's not an easy thing, I know, so watching them do it and do it for the right reasons was just so real.
I'm glad that Derek hit his breaking point.... I mean, I would've after the mistake, but sometimes it takes someone amazing to show you that you should love yourself, even if you've done something terrible. He reminded me so much of Chase in that way, and of course we do get to see Chase and the rest of the guys.

I was also completely smitten with little brother, Kellan. If you miss Chase at all, you'll get a heavy dose of him through Kellan, who is Derek's roommate, because he is just as annoyingly charming and loose-lipped. I adored him. I cannot wait to see who he settles down with. I loved the relationship between kellan and Derek and how much his addiction affected him. This whole story was just so raw and real. I loved it.

I cannot wait to see who's next and I hope we continue to get all the Gentry kids !!
What an awesome read.

Derek Gentry has made some horrible mistakes in his life. Trying to keep himself on track is a work in progress, but with every failure he has, he gets back up again to start over...

Paige Morrissey knows all about Derek Gentry and the mistakes he's made. But, when he saves her from a dangerous situation, she finds herself getting to know the man behind the gossip...

With the comfort they find in each other, Derek and Paige begin a journey together that feels like forever... but sometimes forever just isn't guaranteed...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This book was a heartfelt story of two people who both have a lot of pain in their past. Finding each other was never a plan, but realizing they have something special and real seems to make all of the reasons they shouldn't be together disappear...
Paige lives a solitary life. With very little family and only a couple of really close friends, she has prefers to keep working at her job she has had for years, and staying close to her big rambling house she inherited from her grandparents. Until the night that rattles her, and changes her entire existence...
Derek made a bad choice and got behind the wheel while drinking, and a man died because of it. Having served his time he is working to rebuild his life, yet he finds himself struggling with addiction on a daily basis. Paige seems like someone who is too good for a man with issues like him, but he can't resist her, even a little bit.
Although Derek and Paige seem to lead very different lives, they both find themselves putting on a happy façade for the outside world, and dealing with their inner pain in very unhealthy manners. Loving each other is a start, but will their feelings for one another be enough to heal what's broken inside...
I really like Derek and Paige, their relationship was an extremely slow burn, and I felt that the storyline moved very slowly as a result. And with another Gentry family member finding his HEA, we are treated to scenes with many old favorites from the previous books and series.
This book touched on two very important and serious issues that many people struggle with on a daily basis. I really enjoyed how well these subjects were highlighted throughout the book and I though they were both represented extremely well.
I received a complimentary copy of this book for my honest and unbiased review.
This is the third book in the Gentry Generations series. It can be read as a standalone but would make more sense if read in order.
This book deals with some heavy themes, if you are easily triggered by addictions or addictive behaviors, be forewarned.
This book is by far the heaviest and most emotionally charged book written by Ms. Brent. It was, at times, difficult to read. The characters seemed so raw and so vulnerable that it felt intrusive to be reading about them. Ms. Brent did a fantastic job portraying the addictions in these two characters. It was an honest and brutal look into how addictions can fester, not only in the person suffering, but also the people surrounding them. It was intimate and intense, as well as being so beautifully flawed.
Derek has not had an easy life. Plagued by tragedy and unacceptable life choices, he still can’t seem to find his footing. Paige is an emotional character, driven by her compulsions. Her life, too, has been marred with tragedy. Together these two navigate the waters of addiction and deeply tragic personal histories. We see their relationship flourish over time, into this beautiful and hopeful thing, only to be ripped apart by one fateful decision. I think the beauty in this story is in its intricate flaws. Those moments when two people come together and try to work past their transgressions.
Test, is truly just that, a test of their willpower and relationship. This story is so exquisitely written. This is a story of hope and second chances. I have been along for the ride since Ms. Brent wrote the very first Gentry Brothers story and I have been captivated by each and every story she has told. This story is by far, my favorite. I hope that reading this story will give other readers an inside look into addictions. I hope that they take away the heartbreakingly gorgeous story of hope these two characters bring to life.
OK, so I LOOOVE Cora. Always and forever.
This book, though, wasn't my favorite. Here's why. It's something that might not perturb most people, and the characters are great, as always. I am a firm believer that anyone with any dependency should heal before jumping into a relationship. That out of the way...
I know that it's fully possible for someone to form a very healthy relationship while undergoing treatment for a condition, but with alcoholism or body image issues, IMO it's best to have those mostly dealt with.
That was my only complaint about this book. I loved both Derek and Paige. I loved the family- always love the Gentry's. I just... I wanted them to focus on themselves more than I wanted them to love each other. Then, the love can come.
I fully understand that sometimes meeting someone can be a lure to stay clean, sober, or seek therapy. And I know that's a life-long struggle.
I never felt that Derek was committed to staying sober, though. I wanted him to buckle down and man up. Paige, oh, sweetie, I wanted to see her get better. She barely acknowledged she had a problem, and she does. One that she needs support for.
All that aside, I wanted to see the above because I was really pulling for the two, individually and as a couple. I want them to get their HEA, but they have a lotta work to put in before they're ready. I loved the side characters, and seeing the older generation.
I desperately wanted to love this book, but my hangup with being strong single before being in a committed relationship outweighed that.
I love all of Cora's books, this one included. I have seriously never read anything of hers that I haven't liked. I want them to be strong in and of themselves though. They have so far to go. I'm glad they have each other for support, but there's a lot of healing to do.
I received an ARC for a review, but I purchased the book, too. I always love this family and author.
Another fantastic book in the Gentry Saga.
I think Cora did an amazing job with this one.
Derek and Paige will put you through the emotional ringer. Their story is heart breaking and definitely makes an impression, these two don't have an easy time but I loved their journey.
As we know already Derek has his problems, he's still struggling with the biggest mistake of his life.
Derek doesn't feel worthy of happiness so he punishes himself, It actually made me really sad for him.
However its the unconditional love Derek has from his Brothers that cut through the heartache for me.
Kellan with his Zero filter and infectious humour brought all the laughs. I need more of him.
Paige has her own demons too. My heart hurt for her especially when I learnt of her past. But i liked her friendship with Ric and Sam these girls have a serious connection and they genuinely care about Paiges well being. I bloody loved them.
Even though this book deals with some serious issues its still a beautiful journey between two damaged individuals that happen to be there for each other at just the right time. I'd like to think of it as fate...but you'll have to decide for yourself.
There's always a special kind of magic associated with the Gentrys.
For me It's ALL to do with the strong family bond that's apparent throughout the series, it makes it special and its why I adore these books.
Everyone wants to be part of the Gentry Family because they're perfectly imperfect.
This story is about two people in their twenties. They both have issues they are dealing with. Derek is a recovering alcoholic after a fatal accident he spent some time in jail and is now sharing an apartment with his younger brother. He wants to recover from his addiction but it is hard for him. He now works at his uncles garage.
Paige is still trying to figure out life, she hates crowds and is socially awkward.
Her mother left her at a young age and she is also still hurting because of this.
Her two only best friends take her to a college party where she sees Derek, she leaves early and sees the man again at a convenient store. Some things happen and he saves her from a mad man junkie.
She then realizes Derek is not the way she thought ha was he is a good guy.
Paige also has sort of an addiction also that she doesn’t get help for.
Even though these two had their struggles they became fast friends that became even more.can two people struggling with addiction have a happy life together.
I liked this story I liked that it had two people trying to beat their addictions and they found comfort in each other. I loved Derek’s family they were so supportive and they welcomed Paige in their family with open arms. Paige had no family but her uncle and aunt and her two best friends. She devoured this story and want to read more about this couple and other characters in this story.
Welcome back with the Gentry’s.
We got glimpses of Derek in the last Novella and his problems made me question if his book would be the book for me. I’m not good with books where the main character is addicted to something, but I thought, I would give it a try.
I shouldn’t have doubted the author. Derek and Paige have a beautiful story and my heart was breaking more than once for what they had to endure in the past and through the book.
I would not recommend reading his book without the previous books in the Gentry Generations or even read the whole Gentry series, since it gives you a lot of insight in the family dynamics and the past of all of them. You can read it as a standalone, but why would you want to miss out? It’s worth to start at the beginning.
The plot unraveled easily and sometimes even a bit too fast, in my opinion. It was surprisingly easy to connect with the characters, since I didn’t expect that, as stated in my sentence above, but the writing style portrayed the characters in a way that I could find myself in parts of them. I cried a few times, when the angst became too much and I thought all was lost, but in the end it actually turned out in a really satisfying end, which was good.
As always when I finished a book by this author, I really want the next one and am looking forward to get more books in this series.
Test is another book that I've read this week which had my emotions played with. First of all, let me say that it did take me a bit to become invested with these two broken souls, which is what kept me from the perfect rating. (Remember it's MY OPINION) Paige is a girl who doesn't do well with people around her, so even when she's a young woman, she doesn't go out & have fun like her friends. Derek Gentry is a man who is bringing her to life, even though she knows she should run the other way. It's when they go through something pretty traumatic is when they bond, and I don't mean in a quick way, but a slow burn way because Paige has just as many demons as Derek. So you would thing they would be a train wreck, but somehow, through each other, they heal, giving each other a second chance at a real life. So yeah, my emotions were through the roof, especially after Paige's demon is revealed. Like I could feel each of their struggle like it was my own by the end, and it took everything in my to not end up under the covers bawling my eyes out. Cara Brent penned a story that was beautiful, and realistic in the telling as the problems faced aren't ones that are solved overnight with new people in lives. Anyway, by the end I was a mess, and it's been hard to not give anything away, so I'll just end with HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
**SPOILERS AHEAD**
I loved loved loved this couple and how the book started. I just knew we were getting a couple that would closely resemble Cord and Saylor and Creed and Truly. Just that all encompassing love. And we did, mostly. There was near instant attraction between Derek and Paige and they attached themselves to each other fairly quickly. They of course had a very traumatic event happen that pushed this along.
Kellan was just magic in this book. He is definitely Chase’s son. The relationship between these three brothers was a lot like the Gentry triplets.
Now for the spoilers: I rated this book 4 stars because it was a great story. It held my interest. I read romance for the storyline and intimacy. I do not like slow burn. This wasn’t a slow burn in way of no romantic relationship, but slow burn in the fact that they were not fully intimate until 95% of the book was over. They both have their addictions (Derek-alcoholism and Paige-eating disorder) so I understand there were some hurdles to jump over. I enjoy reading intimate scenes and this was just lacking, especially for a title from Ms. Brent. This was very NA/YA territory, IMO.
Overall, great story. Great chemistry between the couple. A lot of angst (I am not a huge fan of angst). The story flowed nicely and kept me intrigued the entire time. More Kellan please!
Paige works at the Pizza shop while she was trying to work things out, her two friends Sam and Ric wanted her to go out and have fun, and at a party she sees two of the Gentry brothers, but remembers Derek who had an accident drink driving that killed someone
Paige had heard about Derek Gentry and what he did, he’s reputation, but when she went to the store and there was a junkie that started to attack people, even though she didn’t like being touched she felt safe in his arms.
Brilliant
I was pulled into the story right from the beginning and stayed there until I had finished every single word that was written. All the time watching it play out in my head.
Every single emotion that the characters went through, I went through with, I might of even shed a tear or two. Parts of this story really pulled on my heart strings.
There are a few surprises waiting for you throughout the pages of this book, some you may see coming others you won't, some might even shock you, as they did me. But they all help to make this story, one that you won't want to put down until the end.
In true Cora Brent style she has left me wanting more. She really knows how to keep you guessing as to what the characters will get up to next.
I highly recommend this series, if you haven't read any of the Gentry books you are truly missing out on a fantastic experience, if you decide to read them, take it from me you will not be sorry.
I love these books and I have to say as much as I enjoyed the first two books in th e Gentry Generations, this book is my favourite, I have to admit, it is in my top 5 books that I have read so far.
Thank you Cora Brent for sharing your stories with us.
I am really looking forward to what is next.
So I haven't kept up with the Gentry clan if I'm being honest, despite that , I was able to follow this story just fine. I will say that the blurb drew me into the story. This story is about two people who's had struggles and have learned to move on from it. Paige had a troubled childhood, deserted by her mom but raised by incredible grandparents. She's more than ok with chillin at home by herself. Her friends drag her out for a night and that changes her world so much. A night she will never forget and will change her. She does however see Derek in a whole different light. This starts their romance. They have a sweet relationship. If you're looking for a book with tons of sex, then you don't want to pick up this book. Derek has a troubled past. He got himself into some trouble and is now trying to stay clean and be on the straight and narrow. He's got demons that won't shut up. When he meets Paige, he's able to focus on her instead of what he really wants. This book was beautifully written. I gotta say that Kellan is a hoot! That kid, you never know what's gonna come out of his mouth! He was fun! I really did like this book! I'm also glad Derek and Paige were able to find some closure and find happiness with each other.
Every new release in this series feels like coming home. I’ve been so attached to this family from the very beginning and the next generation of Gentry’s is proving to be even better than the first. Test is by far my absolute favorite so far. Derek and Paige’s story is filled with so much emotion and so much swoon it’s nearly impossible to put down once you start. I couldn’t have predicted how much I was going to fall in love with these two.
Derek is every bit a Gentry man. Strong, loving, and flawed in a way that makes him so real. He reminded me so much of his father while still being entirely different. Along with Derek I was almost just as swept up off my feet by his fun loving and hilarious brother Kellan. I’m now dying to get his story too! Paige was a sweetheart with just as much weighing on her shoulders as Derek had on his.
When a traumatic night brings these two together what grows between them is something much deeper than sparks. That doesn’t mean these two don’t have great chemistry, because they have that in spades, but the connection between them goes so much deeper. I loved every moment of Test and can’t wait to get my hands on more Gentry’s!
Cora, you have done it again. I have loved the Gentrys from the first book Draw, and they just keep getting better and better!
Following a few years after Keep, we get to know Derek Gentry and his struggle with alcoholism, and his ever present guilt for his stupid drunken decision to drive a car home after his cousins wedding which resulted in the death of his cousins brother-in-law. Derek is trying so hard to beat his demons and stay sober but there is always that struggle, which leads him to the closest convenience store to buy some liquor.
At the same store is Paige, shy, awkward and battling her own demons stemmed from abandonment issues by her mother. A drug addict high on his latest fix attacks Paige alongside the store clerk when Derek steps in and saves them. After the attacks, Derek and his brother Kellan visit Paige to check how she is. What starts out as an innocent friendship turns into so much more.
I loved how Cora took us on both of Derek & Paige’s separate struggling journeys. I felt each of their pain, guilt, shame and angst. It was also great to catch up with the rest of the Gentry clan with hints of future stories.
The main characters in this book have issues. And that usually makes for a great story when they come out on the other side. However, I didn't feel these characters ever actually addressed theirs. I guess this was a "tell" more than "show" moment. They SAID they were on the road to recovery but we never go down that road with them. That was a big miss for me.
On top of that, this was sllooooowwww. I wasn't too invested in Paige or... see... I can't even remember his name lol. I wasn't interested in the missing mom storyline so I completely skipped anything in italics (to be fair, I don't really like the italic/flashback thing in any book). I skimmed most of the book looking for scenes with Kellen, Thomas, or any of the other Gentrys.
I mean, it was an ok romance. There's no tension, no conflict (besides internal ones) until a slight tiff at the very end and it wrapped up kind of quickly. Wasn't a complete waste of time but I had to push myself to finish.
RANDOMNESS- Cora, if on the off chance you're reading this, can we have a family tree at the beginning of each book? I'm having a hard time with who belongs to whom, especially with so many cousins...
Oh Derek 💜💜💜
Derek Gentry is the troubled Gentry. He has been struck by the addiction curse which hangs like a spectre over the otherwise happy Gentry clan. Throughout the book he struggles to stay away from temptation and to work on his sobriety. I especially loved this aspect of the story as it felt incredibly realistic. Addiction is dealt with sensitivity and it only made me warm to Derek and Paige more.
Paige for her part is also suffering her own mental health problems. These are also dealt with carefully and not just solved instantly as soon as Derek and Paige become a couple.
As a couple, they have more than their fair share of challenges but together they truly make each other happy.
I can't even tell you how much I enjoyed this love story. It had everything I love about Cora's writing. Deep, abiding love, emotional storyline, realistic personal struggles.
There are a few lighter moments courtesy of young brother Kellan Gentry who is a world class flirt and I can't wait until he meets his match!
Long live the Gentry clan.
