This wasn't really what I would call a roadmap so much as a bunch of case studies in which the author came in to transform the workplace culture and (usually) save the day. It got rather repetitive in the formula and I skimmed the last few chapters just to complete the book. I didn't find anything all that helpful or relevant to my situation at work.

Book of the Day – B State

Today’s Book of the Day is B STATE, written by Mark Samuel in 2018 and published by Greenleaf Book Group LLC.

Mark Samuel is a world-renowned coach and consultant, an affirmed author, and a speaker. He teaches organizations how to thrive by applying a culture change, improving performance, and developing the leadership of an organization while achieving measurable, long-lasting results.

I have chosen this book because I have read all the books written by the author, and this specific one came to mind when I was writing a blog post.

This is a thought-provoking book, like all the others written by Mark Samuel. It provides invaluable insights and practical strategies for transforming business performance by enhancing individual and collective effectiveness. Mark Samuel‘s expertise shines through as he offers a practical roadmap to achieving measurable, breakthrough results while developing a sustainable culture of success in the organization.

B State emphasizes that true business transformation starts with personal transformation: you cannot change how an organization performs without changing the performance of the individuals working in it and for it. Mark Samuel guides his readers on a journey of self-discovery and self-awareness, demonstrating the significance of embracing a growth mindset and removing limiting personal beliefs.

The book introduces the concept of the B STATE, which represents a state of peak performance and transformational change. The author shows how this state has five distinct phases: Blaming, Justifying, Shame, Obligation, and Responsibility. By becoming aware of these phases and recognizing where one currently stands, individuals can drive their personal and professional growth more effectively.

Conscious leadership plays a pivotal role in creating this high-performance culture. The book provides many effective and practical tools and techniques to develop self-awareness, foster trusted and authentic connections, and inspire teams. By developing and using conscious leadership, leaders can empower the single members of their teams to take ownership, collaborate effectively, and achieve extraordinary results.

Mark Samuel also addresses the most common organizational challenges, such as communication breakdowns, lack of accountability, and resistance to change by giving easy-to-apply strategies to resolve them while providing some practical frameworks to facilitate open dialogue, alignment, and a sense of belonging.

Yet, achieving a breakthrough is just the beginning. The author shows how an organization and the people who work in it can be successful in the long run only by establishing clear systems, structures, and processes that reinforce continuous improvement, set clear goals, measure progress, and adapt to change.

B STATE offers a comprehensive roadmap for personal and organizational transformation. It equips readers with the mindset, tools, and strategies needed to transcend limitations, embrace responsibility, and cultivate a positive, effective culture of high performance.

Whether you are a business leader, entrepreneur, or professional aiming for growth, this book will undoubtedly guide you towards achieving breakthrough results and realizing your true potential.

did not finish. the book is literally just a bunch of one liners and stories about how this guy came in and told people to imagine what they wanted and the company was turned around and saved. he never even tells you what the B state is or how he proposes that you get there. it sounds like some guy who talks too much just word vomiting on you while you stand there trying to get a word in edgewise.

very rough read, could not finish the book because I got so tired of hearing his personal stories about how imagining makes everything work out.

B State: A New Roadmap for Bold Leadership, Brave Culture, and Breakthrough Results by Mark Samuel is a self help book that is looking at things differently. Mark Samuel focuses more on the idea that we could focus on how we want to feel and the habits we want to focus on as the driving forces of change which makes sense. It is an interesting read with stories of success included.

Items of Note:
* When everything feels important, nothing truly moves forward.
* In business and life, there are often moments when one simply can't seem to find a way forward. B State provides a clear roadmap from point A to point B to rapidly achieve measurable, breakthrough results.
* That is the definition of an A State, after all: using past and current mind-sets and behaviors to try to make changes or improvements.

This book was good at times and hard to read in some areas

I feel like the first part of the book opens up well, but there is a large chunk in the middle that feels like a slow slog to
get through. Maybe it’s just me. It ends really well, chapters 16-21 really bring everything together and contains thought provoking information.

I received this book as a Goodreads Giveaway

This book read as a (very) thinly veiled advertisement for the author’s consulting services. While there were a few good lines and some nice quotes, I found the book lacking in how to make the change that the author speaks of, instead skipping that crucial step with the implication being “hire me and I’ll facilitate for you.”
