This book was even better than the first one (The Dark Witch: Time for Evil Doing) and I was glad I had it immediately ready for reading. The story continues following Amura and her little group of misfits. Although it is still witty and very entertaining, this book takes a more serious tone as Amura is dealing with more serious issues.
I didn't think it was possible for me to love this character any more than I already did, but let's face it - Amura rules. She does not give up or stay down for more than a moment. Her brilliant mind, creative solutions or simply going head first through any obstacles in her way, ensure that she always comes out as a winner. She never compromises her values, opinions or her personality traits. Truly one of the best and most lovable characters ever created.
The plot thickens with the appearance of the Fae Court and some additional characters. The way the author incorporated the fable of ruby slippers into the story, is simply ingenious. There is also a lot of action in this book. It starts with a slow build up, as Amura and Pulania are tying up loose ends from the previous books, and some matters become clearer. Amura and others are pressed for action, so they jump into the roller coaster and give their best. This was the hair-pulling half of the book for me, and I enjoyed it immensely.
The author's writing is fantastic. It has a great flow delivered in the author's unique style, and the consistency the author applies to her character development and world building is remarkable. I also have to mention that the author's attention to detail is impressive, starting with the titles of chapters, each one carefully thought through and coloured with the author's signature satirical touch. And of curse, there are hilarious curses and the best copyright notice I have ever seen.
Writers such as this one, who come up with great ideas, who execute them with consistency to perfection, and who do not sacrifice fabuluosness of their characters with old-fashioned traps, raise my expectations and spoil me for stories that offer any less than that. That is why I will stay fateful to this author and continue reading her books, eagerly anticipating the arrival of every new book.
