Lachlan, a skinny teenager, finds a magical, treacherous, bloodthirsty sword. He swiftly grows into a handsome warrior capable of wielding it, while trying to manage the power within. He’s a likeable, sympathetic character to root for as he gathers allies on his quest. I also enjoyed the descriptive writing: “Flashes of lightning illuminated their confines and one another, leaving luminous white-ghost images behind in the darkness that followed.” There’s adventure, danger, strong characters, and plot twists. The ending is solid with room for sequels. This was a fast-paced, gripping read. Well done!

Corvidae Animus: The Soulraven
What a name for a sword. The title alone sent shivers down my spine.
I expected a grisly tale full of blood and gore, of darkness claiming my soul to pull me down into its dark abyss.
Instead, I was pleasantly surprised by a wonderful, heartfelt, partly humorous story.
I fell in love with the protagonist Lachlan, a character with an atrocious accent and a heart of gold. In my head, he sounded like Scotty from StarTrek in his best years, simply hilarious!
But be assured, this is not a comedy. There will be blood, there will be choices between either frying pan or fire. Lachlain takes you on a voyage that lets you soar the sky, only to fall and shatter in despair a moment later. It's a tale about friendship, loyalty and kindness, but also about hatred, loss and carrying grudges.
The ending came utterly unexpected, probably because my mind refused to see the evidence dangling right in front of my eyes the whole time.
I'm looking forward to following Soulraven's voyage in the next book, Soulraven: Volume one.
