Beth and the Barbarian is book two in the Alien Abduction sereis by Honey Phillips.

Another Hawt and Steamy read with a couple that fits together.

Beth is sensitivity to others and can feel their emotions. It’s why she lives fairly isolated. Dragar is a scared alien male who has given up much in life. Beth will soon discover that Dragar’s issues go deeper than the skin and he will need her, as much as she needs him.

Dragar was a perfect alien alpha hero. I do enjoy my scarred hero’s. I liked his gruff appearance which hide such a gentle and caring man.

This book isn’t all sunshine. We’re treated to lots of sex scenes and they are well written. Your blood will be on fire. We also meet some new characters.

I enjoyed this book and will be continuing onto the next.

Two people, one human and one alien, who thought they would forever be alone. And then they weren't. One is scarred, inside and out and it takes the loving touch, the loving heart of the one he holds dear to finally start to heal him.

A former Outcast, Dragar never felt worthy. He believed he was destined for a life alone, helping to forge a new way for his people, but not really one of them. Beth was an empath, and because she felt too much, she removed herself from much of society. She also believed she would always be alone. And then Dragar came bursting out of the woods, killed her attackers, and took her on a journey among the stars.

Some favorite scenes: everything on Kievan's space station (does he get his own book?); Dragar standing up for Beth and what they share; all that Beth was willing to do to tie herself to Dragar; Beth and Rianen (does this warrior get her own book?); and Jakkar and Anna standing by their sides.

I loved the instant connection between these characters. I enjoyed seeing how, although they were supposed to be so different, they were so much alike. And their feelings for one another, their intimate moments, their bond... yeah, that's what I like to read.

There's a reason I once again took a chance on this author. Sweet romance with dominant heroes, soft yet fierce heroines, and happily ever afters. Gets me every time!

Beth has always been sensitive to the emotions of others, it's why she lives a fairly isolated life. Living in crowded towns and cities can be overwhelming. But, it is a lonely existence. But, when she first sees Dragar, a scarred alien male she feels an almost instant connection. Despite his large size and his scars and the fact that he isn't from planet Earth, she feels safe with him. So, when he takes him with her and away from Earth she is eager to go. But, Beth soon discovers that Dragar's scars are more than just skin deep and he needs her, as much she needs him.

I adore a battle scarred hero. It's all very well having a sexy as hell, unblemished guy, but my tastes run more to the rugged. Which made Dragar perfect. I was already intrigued by him after his appearance in the first book of the series Anna and the Alien, so this book just furthered the obsession. I really liked how his gruff appearance belied someone who could be extremely gentle and caring.

But, this wasn't all sweet. Honey Phillips has written an erotic sci fi romance, so expect some red hot sexy times between Beth and Dragar. This book actually contained more sex scenes then I would normally like in a story, however, Phillips does them really well. So, if you are after a sexier sci fi read, you should definitely give this book, indeed this series, a try.

This book also introduced some new characters I can't wait to learn more about. Firstly there was the icy cold Outcast Kievan, who helped Beth and Dragar...for a price. I can't wait to get beneath his steely exterior and learn more about him. There was also the female gladiator (getting a mind blank on her name!) who helped Beth. There aren't enough alien heroines so I really hope that Phillips breaks the trend and gives her a book in this series.

I enjoyed this book, it's definitely going to be a series I continue reading when I am in the mood for some sexy alien action!

Okay, so this was my first try at a read by Honey Phillips, and...

...it started off hilariously bad, but then got better as I went along.

Like...pretty much it was insta-romance and insta-lust, but while things sped like a bullet train through the whole meet up-get abducted-jump into bed phases, afterwards it was just an emotional roller coaster that went along at a comfortable pace and made you really root for Beth and Dragar to be together.

It definitely wasn't the best or most compelling thing I've ever read, but...I'd be hard-pressed to say that it was quite that bad. If you can make it past the first 30% or so without tripping over how awkward, fast, and nonsensical everything is, then you're in for a smoother ride afterwards. Sure, some things like the whole "get abducted from earth by an alien and possibly never return" part is done rather casually, but I suppose that since I didn't want to read this for the angst, that it's a good thing.

Will be reading other books in this series to get a better sense of the world--starting with Book 1 in the series, which I surreptitiously seemed to have skipped.

This just didn’t do it for me. I have so many questions still because we found out the ‘why’ of zero things. It read like an outline. This happened. Next this happened. Now this happened. The end. Lots of smex, but I just needed a bit more story with it.

Quick(ish) Review

The Good: I am still intrigued with this ‘verse, especially with the introduction of new characters like Kievan. However...

The Bad: The romance is a bit too insta for my taste. I don’t mind an immediate attraction, but the first meet is barely done before they’re practically having sex. And perhaps I didn’t notice as much in the first book, but there’s a lot of sex and it gets a bit repetitive after a while. I appreciate that there are erotic romances that develop a romance through that sexual connection but when there’s not enough outside of sex, I get bored easily.

The Bottom Line: this follow up was only ok for me, but hey your mileage may vary.

Beth y Dragar pulgares arriba!

No sé, simplemente me encantó él.

This is a much more erotic story than is usually found in the sci-fi/Rom genre. It's not that long ago that sci-fi was sci-fi and romance was romance and never the twain should meet. Things have changed of course, and there are many authors out there writing sf/rom. Most of them have a good story with a strong alien hero and a reasonable love interest. This one has a fairly good story but it gets drowned in the erotica that is all pervasive. Of course, you can always do what I do and skip through the pages of erotica but, in the other hand, you may enjoy it.

Beth and the Barbarian review by Honey Phillips.

Synopsis:

Can an alien Outcast and a lonely human find happiness together?

Now Beth and Dragar are being pursued across the galaxy. The time on the run is only forcing them closer together. Can Dragar put aside his troubled past and give Beth the love she deserves? Or will they both end up alone again?

‘She knew he was sensitive about them but they didn’t bother her. The idea that someone had inflicted such pain on him was appalling but the resulting marks were not ugly. They had a certain primitive beauty and showed the strength it had taken to live through what had happened to him.’

This is probably my favourite book in the series so far. Two lonely people making each other complete. Love it!

“Don’t you dare push me away. I don’t for one second believe that you ever acted without honor. But even if you had, even if the whole damn galaxy declared you Outcast, it wouldn’t mean a damn thing to me.”

I actually cried a few times while reading this book because of relating to the female main character. Especially with being an Empath. It’s super rough to be around people when you feel what they feel.

‘I never had a close girl friend.” “You have one now.” Beth felt her eyes fill at the quiet words. “Thank you,” she whispered. The women smiled at each other.’

MAN, do I enjoy the big, scarred, reserved aliens who want desperately to find their special someone, but who think they're unworthy and so FIGHT THEIR ATTRACTION SO HARD IT HURTS. And when their special someone is a delicate little ray of sunshine who looks like they wouldn't be able to handle said big, scarred, reserved alien (both emotionally or physically), but who ends up being FAR tougher than they look I get all swoony.

Beth and Dragar, guys. She's the seemingly fragile human who feels more than most and he's the stoic, former Outcast warrior who finds it hard to believe someone as sweet and gentle as Beth could want someone like him.

*heart eyes*

Throw in a little danger, some steamy times between the sheets, the seemingly cold-as-ice Outcast leader of a dangerous space station, and some spunk and fire and you've got yourself a fun FUN ride. I'm digging these aliens, man. Digging them.

I like this one better than the first story. I do gotta say the author has the weirdest kink for pleasure and pain each their own I say. I wasn’t a big fan of her taking advantage of him while he was asleep not my jam. Also who leaves a planet without their shit he took the paintings the fucking shoes, but he forgot her clothes.

Not as good as first in series

These two are just to sweet. I would have liked to have seen more about the h having Empath powers maybe showing who was after them all. The H was always too worried about hurting the h. It got to be redundant.

Another day, another book in my trashy book era. Although after months of reading almost nonstop, I'm starting to run out of steam!

This book was really good, we follow Beth and Dragar, who made an appearance in the first book. Beth is an artist and an empath and apart from a few moments that felt icky...mostly involving Kievan, I'd say this is a vast improvement over the first book.

I was so looking forward to this book based on the summary and Book 1, but 20% in, and a mostly skimmed 20% at that, I couldn’t take it anymore. I mean really, the story thus far is ludicrous. All sci-fi has to have elements of believability - to be somewhat relatable - and this story has none of that. DNF. Life is just too short.

The first half of this book was bad in the sense it was bland and the second half of this book was bland but somehow worse.

This book is insta-love/lust and not a particularly good example of it. I guess conceptually somewhere it was supposed to have beauty and the beast vibes, but the beauty doesn't notice any of the beast's beastly qualities partially because she doesn't know anything about him or his culture or anything at all before she falls unshakably in love. The beast basis for his love for her is the classic, super-interesting "she's a woman that's spoken to me".

In the second half of the book, once they've finished falling in love in the most boring way possible, we get to the meat of why I didn't like this book.

The villian is introduced and I actually find him quite creepy, sexual harassment/rapey vibes etc. But then there keeps being little comments that are supposed to undercut what a creep this villain is in the "he's not so bad deep down" sense, which I didn't like and he also doesn't really get a comeuppance, which I also didn't like.

But honestly, the worst part was when I clicked "next book" without reading the blurb of the next book. The villain is the main character of the next story. And I thought, ok he's a mega creep but let's see if it's somehow redeemed. Spoiler alert: He isn't. He's so much worse in the next book. It's just an ultra-gross book.

The previous two books I read by her (Beth and the Orc and Quinn and the Queller) were a little bland but not really offensive in any way, but given that bland is a pattern and with the occasional extremely offensive book thrown in I think I'm done with this author.

Oof, so much edging.... that was delightful. My personal guilty pleasure.

I liked a LOT about this book. But what was missing.... the heroine using her powers would have been enjoyable. She's supposedly strong enough to "get images" from people around her, but it's never described. Then other times, she's just like every other heroine who "hears a strange tone in his voice" but "can't place it". Which is FUCKING ANNOYING.

Other than that, background stories were seriously lacking. Hero is shown to have strong friendship at the end of the book, but nowhere is that alluded to previously. Heroine.... is.... some sort of social outcast? No friends whatsoever? And yet she's still a functioning adult... hmm......... I call BS.

Lastly, the ending was annoying. Randomly the author just had to throw in some bdsm. Annoying and amateurish execution.

Anyway, this was my last book for 2019, so happy new year all ;P I think I'm going to avoid Honey Phillips books for now. I either LOATHE them with a passion or they're enjoyable but also annoying at the same time?

I could not put it down! I adored this book! When they first meet, Beth and Dragar are strangers, kicking butt and bonding over dead aliens. Beth is a character that is easy to love. She sees what she wants and she goes after it. Dragar doesn't think he should pursue what he wants because he doesn't think he deserves happiness. My favorite part of this book was the whole thing with Beth knowing that Dragar's the dude for her and Dragar constantly trying to find a reason not to have that happen. Keivan is kind of a sketchy character, but he's still kind of lovable at the same time. Weird I know, even when he's trying to steal Beth from Dragar, he's still up front about it. I can't wait until he finds himself a human mate too, because you know he wants one. In the end, I would highly recommend this book, it's good from the beginning to the end!

Repetitive

The plot was good but if I had to read "your so small" or "I'm don't want to hurt you" one more time I felt like I would scream. It was so repetitive. The author also had to describe every sex scene instead of just a few with implying at other times. This was nothing but page filler to drag the story out longer. Page filler is not a substitute for a well written story.

I stumbled across Honey when I had finished another authors books. I have been on a bit of a sci fi romance blitz. Just something to get lost in other than the norm. Where you can do what you want because it is sci fi.

Trust me you will not be disappointed. I enjoyed this one so much that I am now working my way through all her books. Gotta love Kindle Unlimited.

Disappointing. Extensive themes of dom/sub while not having true bdsm. Anal, spanking, exhibitionism, pain. Other than really disliking that part of it the overarching storyline was good. Lots of triggers that are not mentioned in the blurb, make it only 2 stars.

Ok - Steamy

Whoa that is a lot of sex that is decidedly not plain vanilla (see CW below). The rest of this book, for example the character reactions, are not even trying to be realistic (e.g. responding to anger, fear or just about anything with lust). It's a lust-driven, not a character-driven book. When I read the first book in the series Ithought it was too much, but I think this book might be more. This was never going to be the type of book for everyone. However, if you enjoy very dominant males and lots of steamy scenes of the varieties listed in the CW below, then enjoy. Be aware, as with the first book, this does leave some mysteries unresolved. As for me, I might come back to this series, but right now I need a break from it.

*Content Warning*
Violence. This book contains scenes of sharp clawed aliens attacking and gladiator type fighting.
Sex. This book contains a virgin heroine, themes of dominance & obedience, fighting to get away during sex, anal play, exhibitionism including sex in front of others & sex outside, chase & capture sex, nipple clamps & outfit made of chains with collar, use of a showerhead, the heroine responding to unsolicitied touches of another male, drugs that make the heroine horny, and spanking as well as some other moments of pain as pleasure.

Critique*****Spoiler Alert*****
For me, putting this book in the erotica category indicates that my expectations in terms of depth of characters, character arc, believable world, and logical plot are pretty low. That said there are still things that stood out and annoyed me.

The virgin sexpot. This sexually empowered virgin idea just doesn't work for me. In particular, the scenes with her responding sexually to another male's unsolicited touch don't make sense. Especially because earlier in the book it says she was a virgin specifically because she didn't desire any male's touch before the hero. Not to mention enjoying another man touching her nipple makes her look perpetualy horny & a bit of a skank, instead of a 1-man woman horny for her man.

Rape. The first book touched on this, but the idea (expounded upon here by Rianen in Chapter 11) that it is traditional in the alien culture for men to physically fight with their women and overpower them during sex just makes thier whole culture appear to be rapists. I get that the author is walking the line here between uber dominance and rape, but passages like this just make me uninterested in continuing to read the series.

Changing the previously established world is a bit of a pet peeve of mine. In this one the author changes / develops this idea of the mating bond. Yet, it's still unclear what the difference is between having sex and forming a mating bond.

Liked the scarred Drakar and his lonely sorrow and Beth too but didn't like how quickly she was humping at him, literally their very first meeting and she was rubbing herself all over this complete stranger, who was an alien for outer space. It just wasn't believable or interesting.

I get that the the author is maybe using the whole "mate" genre thing for their instant connection, as well as both characters having been so lonely for so long, but it still made this not very enjoyable.

The sex scenes in this were also much worse, maybe I didn't see it in the first book, but they're very repetitive, she was "rubbing her hard nipples against his chest" every other page, literally. Then he's laughing too much at their first sexual encounters and random times. Again, both really were not good.

I honesrly found this one boring, including most of their time on the space station and really everything about it was boring. I also saw more missing words etc, maybe it's the same in book one but I only noticed here because the story was boring. It's a pity because I did like the characters, so giving it two stars for that.

But this isn't written as well either, there was much less detail, I couldn't even envisage Darkar. There was so little written about his physical appearance, except for "he was big and muscular", I think it was only written once at the very beginning that his skin was grey and textured and I don't even remember it saying once that he had no hair.

There was more detail given to the first aliens that tried to abuuct her, almost like alien werewolves, and weirdly because there was so little description given of Drakar my mind imagined him as like a werewolf male in human form, long brown hair, instead of a bald grey alien that Deakar is supposed to be

That's really not good when the author doesn't even provide a good description of the main character enough to be able to imagine them while reading about them! Very disappointed how lacking and boring this one was, because I had liked Drakar in the first book and wanted to read his story. But this failed for me.
