THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY is the debut thriller by Egan Hughes. The premise of the story deals with love, drama, psychological abuse, lies and revenge. Who was the one that got away?

Mia finds out that her controlling ex-husband, Rob was dead-someone had shot him on his boat. Now things quickly fall apart.

When the police come to interview her, Mia acknowledges that she had taken out an injunction against her ex, when she left him, as he was dangerous and manipulated her. She thought that she had escaped her controlling ex-husband, Rob.

But now Mia is terrified she'll be a prime suspect, however the police are checking all options. They know Mia had reason to hate her ex-husband, but she's not the only one. Lots of people wanted Rob dead, not least his new wife, Rachel. Mia and Rachel are the prime suspects in Rob’s murder.

Mia is now in a new relationship with her new boyfriend, Ben, a new home, planning a new future and a new life.

But Mia has a secret, and one that she must protect at all costs...

Jess is about to embark on a magnificent honeymoon with the man of her dreams, travelling from England by boat all the way to sunny Greece. But things were going to change.

How are these women tied together? Who killed Mia's ex-husband? As the investigation focuses on his new wife, Mia becomes obsessed with finding the truth.

Someone knows the truth…

A Whodunit that you won’t want to miss out on. This book just kept me guessing, right until the end.

Many thanks to the author and The Book Club (FB) for my digital copy.

This is the authors debut novel and an earlier edition was shortlisted in 2017 for the ‘Richard and Judy Find A Bestseller Competition’

Mia has a controlling, manipulative, gaslighting ex hubby Rob but she has divorced him, has a new job and a new man and life is settling
Until Rob ia found dead
And she, amongst other ex partners is in the frame for it
The book goes from the past charting Mia and Rob’s life together to the present and the investigation into Rob’s death in a kind of Whodunit style
Although the theme of a controlling man and the women they abuse is well told in recent fiction this differs as most of it is set on a sailing boat, they have given everything up to go sailing around the Med, this is described in very real claustrophobic chapters and you can almost feel the swell of the sea, and tye taste it leaves on everything it touches, it will certainly put most off the romantic notion of sailing
Rob is horrible, a bully, a leech and a controller, Mia ( especially at one point in the book ) puts up with a lot of psychological abuse from him although I am unsure aside from sympathy at her plight if she will gain many fans re her narrative style in telling her story, you can almost hear the deep sigh before every paragraph
There is a very unexpected twist at the end of the story which was needed and was a good ending to a readable if not a bit drawn out book

Mia Fallon spent months at sea with her new husband, only to discover things were not as they seemed. She managed to get off the boat and head for home, where she's rebuilding her life. When the cops come knocking on her door, it is with the news that her ex-husband has been murdered. She should have felt some kind of relief, but she didn't.

The next person to bang o her door was Rachel, her ex's newest wife. She begs Mia to help her .. to tell the police what had happened to her during her marriage. Rachel is the prime suspect .. she was found over his body covered in blood.

But Mia cant's do that ...Someone knows Mia lied to the police ..and now she's getting threatening letters.

This is a fantastic book told in parts by each of the wives ... both before the husband was killed and the present. It's an intricately woven plot with twists and turns that resemble a roller coaster ride. The characters are finely drawn and memorable. Had me hooked from the very first page.

Many thanks to the author /The Book Club (FB) for the digital copy of this psychological thriller. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

I gotta be honest. This was a struggle. Although the premise sounded interesting it didn't manage to get my attention at all and every other chapter I found myself distracted checking my phone, and that's a pretty bad sign when I'm reading. I think one of the reasons I didn't find this as compelling as I would have liked was the narrative style. While being pretty slow paced at the same time it felt like things were happening so quickly, with conversations ending abruptly and jumping from scene to scene in a way that it felt disjointed some times. Also, some conversations were repeated over and over not adding anything new to the story.

And the characters weren't my favorite either. Rob was despicable and Jess was so naive and gullible that it was hard to read how she took everything in stride while he gashlighted and alienated her. Throw him overboard! I found infuriating how she knew something was amiss with her husband and she acted so passive, not doing anything about it.

While it has several twists, I guessed all of them (minus the one in the epilogue that felt like an add on just for the sake of adding another twist), so I wasn't surprised at all... and I WANT TO BE SURPRISED!

Rob Greavy is found dead on his boat. Theres two prime suspects. The first being his ex-wife, Mia. The second is his current wife Jessica. Mia wasn't where she told the police she had een the night Rob was killed. Jessica's marital relationship with Rob was disintegrating and she had realised he wasn't the man she thought he was.

What a gripping page turner this is. Mia and Rachel are the prime suspects in Robs murder. But could the women be innocent and someone else was responsible? This is what I couldn't quite make my mind up about. It's well written, full of twists and had an ending I didn't see coming. Rob was not a likeable character so basically anyone who knew him could have been the culprit. Loved this book.

I would like to thank NetGalley, Little, Brown Book Group and the author Egan Hughes for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

3.5 stars rounded down. When Rob is found dead on his boat, the police contact his ex wife Mia and his current wife Rachel. Mia wants to forget about Rob - her relationship with him was a disaster, he was a manipulating, coercive man and after their plans to sail across Europe went horribly wrong she was glad to see the back of him. But after Rachel gets arrested for his murder - whilst swearing blind she didn’t do it - the pressure is on Mia to come clean. But she has secrets of her own she doesn’t want getting out…

Am enjoyable enough thriller which kept me interested. But my big issue was that I didn’t find Rob threatening enough, and the fact that I knew he was dead from the start of the book also dissolved a lot of tension. He was dead so there was nothing to fear from him.

It was well written and I loved Mia’s recollections of the sailing trip, I could have read much more on that. I feel it had lots of potential but just didn’t grab me as much as it should - maybe I’ve read too many similar novels.

Told via dual narration by Mia and Jess we know they are both connected by Rob and so is Rachel his younger current wife.

The gripping opening chapter, oh and I do love a Chinese proverb, draws you in. We hear of Rob’s death from the police informing Mia, and learn that she had an injunction placed on her ex husband. She has however moved on and is happy in a new safe relationship with Ben.

We then discover how Jess was swept off her feet after a hasty proposal in Rome and Rachel turns up at Mia’s home. Drenched, nervous and in the frame for prime suspect by the police. But Mia has a secret and she’s not the only one.

The characters, to some, may seem a bit infuriating but for anyone who has been in this situation will know the signs and how easy it is to go along with things to make life a little easier and how all your strength is gradually chipped away. The author has done her research and it has paid off with gritty realism that at times is a little uncomfortable.

This is claustrophobic, frighteningly real in it’s telling of gaslighting and coercion and also a classic whodunnit.

The book started off with the cops informing Mia about the death of her ex-husband Rob. Then came the present wife of the ex, Rachel, her father, then a letter from her mother, in fact, Rachel’s entire family came to Mia’s doorstep, asking for her help. I wondered why. Was it because she was the one that got away.

The story was told from Mia’s POV in dual timelines. The past bespoke of her time with Rob, which was far more interesting as it showed me how Rob eroded her confidence and made her lesser than herself. The present time showed me that she had a secret that she was hiding from the cops which was dragged until the last few pages.

The writing was good, suspense could have been sprinkled uniformly in the prose. This was quite slow paced and many a time, I wanted to ask Mia to run away. Rob was a typical smooth operator, the forked tongue who could make any woman fall for him with his charm. Mia tried hard to gain my support and sympathy. Never understood the rest of the characters. There was just so much of anger and bitterness amongst them. Better motives for every character might have made it far more interesting.

Overall, it was a good tale but quite familiar as many have been done on the same lines.

No niestety.

To historia o traumie, zemście i toksycznej miłości.

No szkoda. :(

Rob Creavy has been shot dead. And, quite frankly a man like him has so many enemies it's anyone's guess who could have shot him. Which is lucky for us as a reader.

The first part of this story is told from the perspective of Mia in the present. Who is Robs ex-wife. And, that of Jess told in the past narrative. Through their stories we start to piece together the nasty piece of work that Rob is. He charms the ladies, promises them the world then basically as his name suggests, Robs them blind. Like I said, he's got plenty of people with good motive to kill him.

We slowly uncover that Mia isn't quite as squeaky clean as she's trying to make out. What secrets is she keeping? And, who on earth is sending her nasty emails?

The One That Got Away is a great mystery drama. I love the way that the story and lies start to disentangle. When you think you have one mystery solved then another bombshell explodes and you have more mysteries to uncover.

I really hated Rob so in a way I was excited to find out who killed him just so I could high five them. Is that wrong and twisted of me? Well why don't you read about his exploits and see if you think the same.

💫 Thank you to the publishers for my gifted copy 💫

Thank you to NetGalley and Little Brown Book Group UK for the arc of The One Who Got Away written by Egan Hughes.

Thank you for Egan Hughes for writing this compelling gritty book.

This involves a man named Rob Creavy- whom is an controlling ex husband of Mia, is found dead on the boat in which he owns. There are several suspects of whom it could be... including his new and current wife named Rachel and of course Mia herself.. but who actually killed him? anf were either of these viable suspects to the killing...? Or are there other suspects in the mix who wished that Rob is dead...

This leaves you guessing and asking questions right up to the end and the ending is remarkable... one of them books in which you will not be able to guess in a million years.. it had me shook! but toally loved all the twists, turns and mysteries... definitely a summer read... 100% recommend!

The synopsis for The One That Got Away sounding really interesting so I'd been looking forward to reading it over the summer while imagining being on a yacht off the coast of Greece seeing as real holidays aren't possible at the moment!

The plot starts with the murder of Mia's ex-husband, Rob. We learn that Mia had escaped an emotionally abusive relationship and Mia carries the scars from that relationship. She also seems to have some guilt over his murder and we find out she was actually with Rob on the day he was killed. Mia is introduced to Rob's new wife Rachel who is in a frantic, emotional state after being questioned over his murder. Rachel comes to Mia for help with both women knowing how they were treated by him, hoping they can be victims who support each other. Mia's account is split between "before" the murder and "after", showing us what she experienced throughout her relationship and how it has affected the person she is now. There is also a third account from a mystery woman who also seems to have had a relationship with Rob. These three women have all been wronged by Rob and all of them in their own right had motive for murder... but who is truly responsible for the man they once each loved?

The One That Got Away seemed quite promising at the start, especially with the first twist. Soon after that, I felt like we were going round in circles. We got the idea of how Rob treated Mia, how he treats women in general but I started to feel like the backstory wasn't giving us much to help reach the conclusion. Each of the women is put forward as possible culprits with their own motive but then quickly discounted on account of evidence or their own admissions. I just felt like this could've been developed better to make this story more enjoyable as it did feel a bit like going round in circles to drag out the ending.

I think there are plenty of readers out there who would enjoy this book but I didn't enjoy it as much as I'd hoped. A middle of the line 3 star read for me. Still happy to recommend as an easy summer read for fans of this genre.

Thank you to NetGalley, Egan Hughes and Little, Brown Book Group for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Mia, to nasza bohaterka. Czy ujrzy on światło dzienne?
Uwielbiam to uczucie.

Mia is settled in to life after her experiences with her controlling ex-Husband, but when the police inform her that he’s been found dead, not only does it bring everything back, but she’s also worried she’ll be a suspect….because she has something to hide. But she soon discovers she’s not the only one that hated Rob, and anyone of them could have been the murderer……

This is a fab debut thriller with plenty of unexpected twists. The chapters alternate which helps us to get to know Rob in the past, and see things from Mia’s view point in the present. Hughes does a brilliant job of keeping the suspicion on everyone so you’re never really sure who did it until the conclusion.

Rob is a cruel, manipulative bully who will make your blood boil. The way he controls and exploits others is disgusting; but he sucks you in with his charm in the beginning. Because he manages to suck the reader in too, it makes it easier to understand how the characters were influenced. Mia goes through a lot and although at times I felt so frustrated for, and at her I did warm to her and felt sorry for the things she had gone through. I’m not going to say anything about the other characters – I’ll let you make you own decisions!

Mainly set on a boat, sailing around the mediterranean you can feel how claustrophobic it is for Mia, and her desperate need to get away to land and civilisation. The boat gives Rob the ultimate control and definitely made me not want to go sailing! The descriptions are brilliant and I could imagine the glorious sunshine, marina’s, sea and storms. I could also really see the changes to Mia as her marriage progressed.

I really enjoyed the twists in this and the ending was fab. I did feel at times that the story dragged on a little, but still throughly enjoyed it. Overall a great debut; I’ll be keeping an eye out for Hughes’ next book. If you’re looking for a new author, a psychological thriller and some glorious sun and sea then this could be for you. Recommended by me.

The One That Got Away is the debut novel for Egan Hughes and is one that I found to be dark, gripping, intense and a very enjoyable read. It had me well and truely in its clutches and I was caught in its web of lies and deceit.

The story follows Mia who has left her controlling husband Rob to start her life anew in a new home and with a new boyfriend. But her new found happiness falls apart when Rob is murdered, which has Mia scared that she will become a suspect and that the secret that she is hiding, could become her downfall.

The characters have been very well put together, but I did find it hard at times to connect with them all. Rob as the villain, is perfectly written and with a host of characters that have a hatred towards him and with each wanting him dead, has you second guessing them all.

Having part of the setting on a sailboat was a great move on Egan’s part and a point of difference. Its claustrophobic vibe really made those chapters feel so real and its choppy waters had me on more than one occasion having to put the Kindle down to reset. It really was a character in itself.

The structure of the story moves from the past, giving the reader an in-depth view of Mia and Jess’ relationships with Rob, to the present where the focus is on Rob’s current wife Rachel, their relationship as well as his murder investigation.

The story is a slow burn to start with, but the second half does pick up significantly and had me racing through the pages to see how it was going to unfold. Along the way, Egan throws in some pretty big twists and turns to keep you on your toes and to hold your interest.

All up The One That Got Away is a thrilling and twisty read that will keep you engaged in the build up to an epilogue where Egan has left the biggest and most shocking jaw dropping twist of all! It was a pleasure to read and review The One That Got Away which I recommend.

Thank you to NetGalley, Little Brown Book Group and Egan Hughes for allowing me to read an advanced copy of The One That Got Away which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Poznajemy trzy różne kobiety - Mię, Rachel i Sky. Kto i dlaczego popełnił tę zbrodnię?

This crime/domestic thriller really gripped me! We follow Mia as she learns her ex-husband Rob is dead, and someone suspects foul play. Given that Mia and Rob's marriage has not been smooth sailing, it is inevitable for Mia to be suspected. Even more so because she was there when it happened.. but will she get away with it?

Mia is doing all she can to lay low, but begins to receive messages from someone who knows exactly what she did that night. She tries to avoid and navigate the police investigation, but when Rob's recent wife Rachel reaches out for help, Mia is dragged back into the life she so desperately wanted to escape.

The reader follows the police investigation as well as gaining an insight into Rob's previous relationships. We learn of the type of husband Rob really was, and quite frankly it builds a pretty good motive for any of the ladies in his life to want him dead. This adds to the suspense of wanting to find out the truth.

As much as I was hooked very early on in the book, I found some of the storyline to slow down a bit. I knew things would pick up again (there were still so many unanswered questions!) but it took some time to get there. The final events were not as expected, and really tied up a lot of the themes and lies touched on throughout the story.

Exploring themes of control, power, and deceit, this book is definitely one to look out for! The comparison of 'before' and 'after' built a lot of tension, which made for a fantastic fusion at the finale!

I really enjoyed reading this book, and the themes left me thinking about a lot of the character's experiences. I gave it a four star review on Goodreads, and I can't wait for other readers to get their hands on this too!

This is a gripping and addictive read, dark and bitter, a read that I will not forget.
I always know that books with an abusive husband touch me deeply, I don’t think it is easy to step outside the relation without any mental scars, it doesn’t matter for how long it has been the abuse, the life will never look the same as before.
This is the story of Mia, Rachel and Rob, Mia is the one that “got away”, Rachel is the new wife and Rob is the abusive husband that has appeared dead. As you can imagine there are a lot motives to want Rob dead, but the main question is “Why Now?”
The story will be told between the past and the present; the investigation of the murder and the story of Jess, how a beautiful love story transforms into a nightmare. Since the beginning you know that Mia is hiding something, she is scared that the police discovers that she saw Rob on the fateful night and she is receiving some menacing letters on the email. But the mystery remains the same, she left that horrible life, now she has a boyfriend and a “normal” life, why would she risk everything by killing Rob? Or she didn’t do it and there’s someone else wanting him dead?
As you can see there are a lot of questions popping to your mind while you are reading this book, but be prepared, this will not be an easy book. It will touch you and wonder if there’s any way to help all the women that are every day abused by their loved ones. Because leaving the monster is not the only difficult step on the path, they normally try to find you again…

**SPOILERS**

I did like this book although it was a little predictable and the characters a little bit unlikeable.

The beginning was a little confusing as it chopped between two characters and I found it hard to keep up although I then found out they were both the same person so this helped things!! In the second part of the book when the story flicks between past and present I found it easier to keep up.

The whodunnit itself seemed quite simple - there was an ex wife and a current wife and they were trying to pin it on the sister (who it turned out did do it). They all had motives and all appeared to have played a part, so there wasnt much detective work needed, rather just reading on to find out how it panned out.

I think that the biggest problem with the book was that the characters were not very likeable. Jess/Mia was not that interesting, Rachel seemed manipulative and Mia was just a bitch! Rob was horrendous and manipulative which made him the typical villian of the piece however; as a serial schemer I felt like we should have seen more of the charm that helped him scam all these women in the first place. Just being a one dimensional horrible gaslighter didnt really do it for me.

I would say that 3 stars totally fits as I did like this book but felt that improvements could have been made.
