The Intern is book 3 in the Brooke Walton series, but can easily be read as a stand alone book.

This book starts off with Brooke participating in a rather horrific event in Cancun, Mexico. As always, Brooke feels perfectly justified in her response to the attempted attack on her, but she does make a rather unfortunate mistake this time around which has an impact on future events in the story.

Brooke is as focused and perfectionist as ever and has managed to get a great job as an intern at the local medical examiners office. She is hoping to have opportunities to participate in autopsies and learn more about the functioning of the human body as well as find out about the effects of diseases and unnatural death. Brooke quickly discovers two things at the medical examiners office. The first is that the doctor in charge, Dr Gold, does not seem to like her and relegates her initially to data entry and the second is that someone has been making some serious mistakes and entering certain bodies as having being autopsied when they have not. Brooke feels she must bring these errors to the attention of Dr Gold and, by doing so, sets in motion a series of events that results in her being out of control of her own life for the first time ever.

This book was a bit different from the first two books in the series and redirected the path of Brooke's life to a certain extent. This needed to happen if the series was to continue and it added a lot of new thrills, excitement and some interesting new insights into Brooke's fascinating physiology. As always, despite Brooke being a serial killer, I found my self routing for her and hoping for a good outcome to the story as far as she was concerned. The outcome certainly takes a must unexpected turn, but this added greatly to the story and the series as a whole. I will definitely be reading Book 4 when it comes out.

Don't know what to say.

Wow! I really don't know what to say! What an awesome read! Brooke is the sociopath that you can't help but love. Does that make me crazy? Anyway these three books flowed together beautifully with characters who are complete. You are not left hanging at all! I only hope that just maybe a few more books might come out of this. I'd love to see where school and her new job takes her.

Interesting read. A beautiful protagonist without a scintilla of empathy or conscience

I read this as a stand-alone, because the author included enough back-story from the first two books of the series. This was interesting, because the POVs are of two people with serious anti-social personality disorders. I guessed one is an innate psychopath, and the other is a violently impulsive sociopath with a modicum of empathy.

The premise is intriguing, the storyline well-crafted, but I was drawn by the protagonist—an intelligent, high-functioning psychopath—who’s obviously studied/read about the psychology and sociology of human behavior. It wouldn’t have been as gratifying a read if she weren’t still learning about “normal” human behavior. Plus, she does make mistakes when she’s forced to improvise.

There were several more-than-coincidences and some unbelievable events, but I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more about Brooke Walton. However, I’m more interested in Greytech and its players.

Audible:Excellent! The 3rd book in this series and I can't wait for more! Brooke is working in a morgue, her dream, when all heck breaks loose over her past descrepancies. There MAY be a way to blame someone else for some of it,but she'll need to be a good actress too.Stephanie Dillard was the perfect narrator.
I was given this book by the narrator, author or publisher free for an honest review.

I liked the first two books in this series a lot. But I LOVED this one! I couldn't stop reading and when I had to, I couldn't wait to pick it back up again. I stayed up past my bedtime, but it was so worth it.!!

This is another tremendous story in this series but the appalling mistakes in it really let it down. This is the worst-presented one of all of her stories, I would say. I've never yet given her 5* as each time presentation/mistakes have let the side down but this one really took the biscuit.....the errors this time really should've been spotted and corrected. Too many of them were the big no-no from me when an author gets her own character's name wrong and this time it happened more than once, quite shockingly !! Hence only 3*.
I wondered too about Brooke in this instalment..she seems to have got a bit careless and clumsy. This is a girl who doesn't ever make mistakes. She got a little too slapdash in this story....to her cost. The fact she had to question whether someone could bug her mobile phone gave me pause, too.....the "old" Brooke would've known this.
There were a LOT of missing speechmarks I highlighted throughout the book, we also had missing or misplaced apostrophes, dropped fullstops a few times, Oak was needlessly capitalised then scotch needed to be but wasn't, hand written doesn't need a space, neither does work out but anyway DOES. Tired looking needs hyphenating and so does as needed and binge watching, then she wrote craning and it ought to have been straining.
But those really terrible mistakes were suddenly writing Carrols and not Carrolls (more than once) and then Jessica Kline was referred to when her characters' names are Rachael Kline and Jessica Carroll......the worst instance of this was writing Violent Simpson and not Violet and then also writing Brook and not Brooke (which transgression cost one star on its own) ! How nobody spotted this is beyond me but this sort of sloppy mistake really lets her great stories down. If this had been my first read of hers, it would've been my last.
Hoping this won't be the last in Brooke's series, although if I pick up another by her presented THIS badly, we'll be parting ways, sadly.

I liked the first book Everett, I enjoyed the second book Rothaker but loved this one. I just hope the author has plans for another book!!! This book continues from where the previous books left of and I highly recommend you listen or read them before you enjoy this book. I spent the whole book wondering who was going to get killed next, was she going to finally get caught? and then got hit by an ending I didn't see coming.
Brooke has finally made it through the first year of medical school and needs a summer job to pay for next year. She is lucky to land a job in the medical examiner's office but it isn't quite up to what she is hoping for. Until she starts to notice discrepancy in the paper work and she finally gets the chance to help with the autopsies. Things are looking up until a detective comes around asking questions about Jessica and Rachel, just two of the obstacles Brooke had to move out of the way. At the same time two missing boys bodies are discovered in Cuba who happened to go missing when Brooke and her family were there on vacation. As Brooke beings to feel the noose tighten around her delicate neck can she put her high IQ to the test to find a way get awy from the ghosts that haunt her.
I really like this narrator and think she did an excellent job with all three book, so if there is another book I hope she sticks with it as I can't imagine Brooke being read by anyone else.

The Intern - a Dark Thriller (Brooke Walton book 3) by Jennifer Ruff and Dan Alatorre
I didn't really like this book. I wasn't really sure why. About halfway through I got confused about the plot, about the characters, about the author's intention.

There were too many threads. But I persevered it seems so did the authors. The ripples over the second half of the book seemed to converge almost as if their typing fingers had decided where the story was going to go, and took over from their minds.

Not sure why, but I finished it, and I'm pleased I did. I believe there was merit there. I enjoyed the character of Brooke, and I liked the boss of the morgue.

In the end it was a worthwhile read. Not special, but OK. I think there could be more here. This is just the opinion of one man of course.

Despite her resolve, Brooke has killed again. It has been six months and the furor over her fellow missing intern has begun to die down. Brooke had no choice really. The woman threatened to derail Brooke’s achievements!

Now it is summer., her first year of med-school behind her. Brooke is ready for an internship. The perfect position comes up, an assistant at the morgue. She can’t wait to start. It is the perfect job for her and the pay is unusually high for an internship. What could possibly go wrong? Has she really been smart enough to cover all her past indiscretions? Can she finally be trouble free?

I want more

Summer time and Brooke is an intern, but the murders and the cold cases regarding missing people from the first two books are not gone. Zander is still her bf, but not as present as his internship has him in another city. New characters appear with her work at the morgue and in the form of a stalker?!? The story flew and I was so intrigued by the spin of the stalker and psychiatrist detective. I hope there is more to this series because what a premise would the next book or set of the series have!! A psychopath working for a secret organization…color me intrigued!

Refreshingly different!

This series has been great! The writing and ability to draw you in significantly increased with each book. I read many books and often become frustrated with reading what seems to be the same or very similar story lines but this series is refreshingly different and has stood out amongst many! I usually don't leave reviews but felt this read is well worth the time. Thanks Jennifer for sharing your talent! I can't wait to read more and being a local is pretty awesome too!

Loved this book

What a twisted sister. I find this Brooke character quite funny at times. The way things irritate her crack me up as I had a sister that thought like that about people. Unlike brooke, she just chose not to speak to them. The medical parts interest me as a nurse and the psych aspect is fascinating. Making this series blend so well. Twisting the whodunit kept me guessing. This is one of the best books I've read in a while. Scoring a five in my opinion. Thank you and may I have another ?

3rd book in series

My oh my where do I begin? Let me say it is not often that I like a sequel or even a 3rd book in a series as much as the 1st book...the author knocked it out of the ballpark once again in my opinion. I'm always afraid to say too much in a review about the actual story because I don't want to ruin it for anyone. That being said I'm going to tell you to go read books 1 and 2 so you can catch up and enjoy the ride.

Twisted ending

Brooke Walton , psychopath ,goes to Cancun on vacation for four days with her family . On the first night she is restless and goes for a run. She has the rental car key . While out she runs by two young men who decide to rape her . She comes out on top of that situation with them dead and the key lost . This story becomes one of lies and more lies, however , she is smarter than everyone . Or so she thinks .

Highly intelligent female, med student, and functional psychopath...

Brooke is in the habit of achieving whatever goals she sets for herself.
She is young, beautiful, a serious runner, a med student (working a summer job at a morgue), and, oh, by the way, a functional psychopath in the habit of eliminating obstacles in her path.
Recommended, especially for fans of author Robin Cook or TV character Dexter Morgan.

Twistedly good!!

Great series! Completely not what I expected. I always want good to triumph over evil but I found myself continually not wanting the murderer to get caught and admiring her perseverance, intelligence and absolute confidence in her ability to always outsmart everyone else and come out on top everytime. Haha!
A really fun read!

The Best So Far...

I read all 3 novels and book 3 was the best! I thought for sure her character was over and so glad it is not. These reads kept me reading and wanting more. So many twists and the plot just thickens. A must read if you have not read these books!! Bravo-- you keep writing and I will keep reading !!!!

Psych!

This is an entertaining read even though I didn’t read the other Brooke Walton books. Brooke is quite the evil genius, her brain always in overdrive, staying a step or five ahead of her pursuers - whether they be law enforcers or dastardly criminals. A worthwhile, and enjoyable read-it-in-a-day book.

Would not want to get the wrong side of Brooke!

Came late across this series so this ended up being the first book I have read. But this did not detract from being able to enjoy this novel. Not knowing the details of her first murders but just knowing they had happened almost made this a stand alone.
Enjoyable thriller and it makes a change to be rooting for the baddie!!

Great story of Brooke Walton and she finally identifies her as a psychopath with no remorse or feeling. Brooke does some crazy things in this story and it is a wonder she lives to tell about it. Ruff’s writing keeps you turning pages waiting to find out what’s next on Brooks agenda. I loved the twisted ending to this book. I hope Jennifer Ruff delves into the CIA? Loved it 5

I was enjoying this book, as I did with the previous two. Brooke was actually becoming sort of a detective, to cover her own butt, of course. But the ending was such a let down! The omnipresent CIA, really? Surely the author could have written something more imaginative than that to end the series.

Kept my attention

I read all three back to back. Very nice character development.
I thought she would use her boyfriend and blame him, unresolved.
Was Robert behind everything? , some of it? Then came Charlie ,in service with boyfriend. Good reading. Author left open for further series.

I was taken by surprise on how the story developed. I liked the way it ended, not predictable at all. The lack of humour between any characters bugs me a little. I would have expected some banter, even if Brooke did not relate to humour it should have been somewhere. I enjoyed the story none the less.

I got this book as part of a free deal from Amazon so didn't expect much but by the end of Chapter 1 I was so hooked I had to congratulate the author on her writing skills by e-mail.

Jenifer Ruff, I'm looking forward to the next installment of what Brook is up to.
