I've read all kinds of books in my life. Big Important Books. Falling-apart-from-use books. Comic books. Books with no pictures that I wish had been comic books. Cookbooks. Pulp fiction. Histories. Biographies. You get the idea.
And one day I just reached a point where I wanted to write the kinds of stories I really enjoy reading—stories with humor, action, and all kinds of supernatural shenanigans. And a kick ass heroine who's a real person, with the messy and meaningful challenges real people face in life.
When I'm not writing, I'm outside working in the garden, playing Pokemon Go with my kids, or trying to convince our crazy dog that she really does like baths. Hope your day is full of awesome—thanks for stopping by!
Transparently biased here, as I recently finished narrating the audiobook version, but I love Cass!! You can't read this smart and snarky vampire thriller without getting caught up in it. You'll be glad you did!
I am an Avid Reader of the paranormal genre with a strong leaning toward vampire novels. I've read many, all of the most famous ones. And this book comes up with A New Concept, to me, which is a wonderfully surprising event. I mean, looking for pieces of the one true cross, that's genius. Really good book. Worth a read.
An interesting read but a bit disjointed at times as the author doesn't fully explain the MC's powers or how she can use them. They just are and the MC goes from no feeling of powers at all to instant blast off super hero ability. All the same, interesting enough that I'm now reading book 2.
I loved this first book of this series. I loved Cass, her aunt, best friend, and a man not quite to vampire state, not lost. I figured who the leaders of the vampires was very quickly. I loved the religious part, the faith, the relics, the evil versus good, the loss, her struggle, and her finding that she has abilities. The fighting scenes were awesome, and it will be a series I will want to continue. I want to see whose side that the Orange tabby, called Atlantis is on. It is more than just a cat. I'm also interested in finding the truth about Nicholas York. I do not trust him, yet he does not seem evil, just up to something. I also feel her father may have a role to play. This was a fast page turner. Plus it had history, and paranormal, and vampire slaying. Oh My !!! 5 stars.
A quick and entertaining read with a nice blend of religion, magic, paranormal, history and romance. The play on these topics created a unique story for Cass and crew. The book provided details at perfect moments that built in who each person was and what all was going on in this world. The connection to her mother was interesting and left me with many questions about dad and Richard and what happened to mom. Good first book!
I'm not going to rate this because I ended up skimming the last third of the book. This should have been a great adventure for me. History and magic and mysteries? All good stuff. But for some reason, I could not get into this book. It was a chore to put myself into the story, and I never really understood Cass, or her separation from her emotions.
Anyway, I couldn't properly finish this book, so it gets no rating from me.
This book was so good. I loved Cass and how the author made a imperfection powerful. I would have never imagined it. The story line was smooth and easy to follow.
Another author recommended this book in her newsletter. The book itself isn’t bad but you get the impression that the author saved all the interesting developments for the next books.
Cassandra works as a barista after the university failed to accept her dissertation. This dissertation is about religious relics. As you might know, the church used to have manufactures for religious relics. Think of the shroud of Turin. But Cassandra has written a thesis on how to track pieces of Jesus Christ’s cross, the True Cross. After being contacted by two vampires about this thesis, one of them the and guy always referred to as the thin man who is killing priests, and the handsome Richard, Cassandra discovers she is a seer (a seer named Cassandra how original) and the only one who can stop the thin man from acquiring the pieces and ultimate power. This she sets forth with Richard, her friend Zach and her aunt.
Vampires aside this setup is actually similar to Indiana Jones. Instead of the journal of Indy’s father they follow Cassandra’s thesis. And like the ark of the covenant, the relics have interesting effect if not used properly. However, the book is like a cheap television rip-off.
The characters are bland. Zach serves no purpose other than being the corner of a very forced love triangle. While Richard seems to be her insta-love interest, I find him shady. His motivations are never explained and since the thin man is once mentioned to be the first vampire, these should probably be questioned. This could be elaborated on in later books though.
With her powers, the thesis and the help of a cat that keeps showing up (probably a divine messenger) finding the relics isn't a challenge. Though the scene in the cathedral with the decoy was nice.
Next up are the battle scenes. There are three in there. On Amazon, there was this series starring Jean Claude Van Damme, in which he basically made fun of himself. In the pilot, there is this scene where the bad guys are about to rush him. But then one of them stops the others telling them that they would be in each other's way and should attack one after the other. 😃 These fighting scenes were too much like that.
The plot twist at the end was nice even if not particularly logical. It basically suggests that someone who died in a horrendous fashion to free humanity from sin would hold a grudge and curse someone for all eternity. And there were teasers for the second book that might make me check it out especially as its part of Kindle Unlimited. I wouldn't buy it though.
This was a quick read that was both entertaining and funny. The story reminds me of Raiders of the Lost Ark with a female Indy!
Cass, our MC, has a PHD in Archeology; her dissertation is on religious relics and her thesis is how to track the pieces of the one true cross. Yet, she proclaims to be "faithless". It's an interesting journey with good and evil searching for the cross.
The characters are unique. Cass is a snarky kick ass female. She learns her aunt is a witch...that vampires are real and that her best friend is prepared to battle vampires. I didn't like that there was instant love with Richard. Otherwise the story was really good.
I did like the overall storyline, but it could have been better. I can't articulate exactly what I found lacking. Not the amount of typos. I am rather use to them in e-books.. Not enough drama, perhaps. It never grabbed me. I think with some editing, it could be improved. I have the utmost respect for writers. I couldn't do it. This read like a first novel. I enjoyed the original take on the distinction that separates the two types of Vampires in this story. Also, omitting if Vampires sparkle or not. So overdone. Thank you for NOT doing that. I plan on reading more by the Author to watch her grow. She definitely has the imagination..
I liked it and will continue. Fell in love with it more towards the end. But something was missing with the characters. I didn't feel a deep connection with them like I wanted to. But because I liked it enough to continue, I hope I learn about some of them on a deeper level.
I dated three stars wanted to date it 3.5 stars. The story line was great but her falling for Richard so quickly with in couple of hours is silly. You don't know someone that quickly. Judas I believe had faith but he believed that Jesus was more for claiming His kingdom now. Not I. Heaven. But I guess he did repent in the end.
I really liked this book. But it was too short. Other than that, the plot character's and dialogue are all interesting. I love that the main character isn't perfect.
Former grad student turned barista, Cassandra Jones finds out her family has been keeping secrets from her when she is contacted, meets and attacked by two kinds of vampires.
On one side is Richard York, one of the Turned who claims to be the good guy. On the other is one of the Lost, whom Cassis calls the Thin Man. But Cassie herself is not totally human. And neither are some of those around her.
Atlantis is adorable. Going to fun watching her character.
Footnote: 1) I understand having Miranda drive in Oregon since she knows her way around. And the same thing for Richard in Spain, but there’s no way Cass should been allowed to drive in Europe. She wouldn’t know where to go or how to handle the way they drive over there.
2) Even though I am a saved Christian, I’ve always doubted this thing about the pieces of the One True Cross, or any of the so-called relics, for many reasons. First, even though Jesus had many followers at the time, I doubt any of them kept the cross he’d hung on. The last thing they’d want is reminder of his torture and death. They all were too upset by the situation and concerned about what to do with Jesus’s body, thinking they’d never see him again. Next, the Romans and Jewish priests wouldn’t have let them. They were trying to cover up the whole thing. It would have gotten lost in the crowd, so to speak. And lastly, God wouldn’t have allowed it since we’re supposed to worship Jesus and not an artifact. That’s why we haven’t found Noah’s Ark or the Ark of the Covenant. To keep us from worshipping them. But it makes a good story.
Fave scenes: taking out the vamps by the car, ‘open the window’ and the old graveyard.
I really wasn't expecting much when I downloaded this book. But it looked like it might be fun and was free on Amazon Prime. I wasn't a great way to kick of a series by comparison to the next three books but it was good enough to keep me interested in the series. Until I had corrective surgery I had a wandering eye and I had no idea I was making people so uncomfortable. Truth is I don't think it would make Cassandra quite the physical freak the author portrays her as and if she's all that beautiful I don't think it would detract that much from her beauty. I really didn't know what to expect from Cass when in the opening she ignores a customer while texting on her phone. I also don't think the author did a great job on describing Cass's emotional issues or lack of emotion. She talks about not being able to feel things in the first person but she can feel that she likes Zach. She had an instant dislike for the trophy wife customer. She felt an immediate attraction to Richard York. She felt hurt that her doctoral thesis was rejected and even more so that her father had fired her from her job as a librarian. So while Cass not being able to feel her emotions in the first person is supposed to be a big part of her personality and the story it just didn't ring true. At any rate give this book and the remaining three books a chance and perhaps like me you'll be hooked on the series.
This book had some promise. I found the wandering eye of the lead character and some of her banter interesting. The storyline of the one true cross was also something new I haven’t read before. Even though I had zero expectations when I started reading, I felt pretty disappointed after finishing it. The world building was not great. Even though this is a vampire book, I found the reactions of the characters to be very unrealistic. I’m not quite sure how/why/or when Cass and Richard develop deep feelings for each other. When the villain at the end tells Cass she shouldn’t mix love and work I was actually confused. How could she think she may be in love with him? She barely knew him. I’m not a fan of insta-love romances, I prefer a little more slow-burn. Zach and Miranda were underdeveloped characters. Overall, the book felt rushed and I don’t really feel compelled to read the rest. Maybe if I get in to a reading rut I’ll check out the second book to see if the story improved.
This was a "meh" for me. I just didn't connect with the characters as much as I would have liked. I did connect with Cass a bit because of her self-image problem with her funky eye, but neither of the love triangle guys did it for me. Maybe in the next book they will develop, but since it didn't grab me I won't be reading the next one.
This has archeology including some Biblical references. Cass is a truth seer. She can tell if someone is lying, but works as a barista since she dropped out of her doctoral program. Two vampires read her unfinished dissertation and think she can help them find the pieces of the one true cross because she knows if something is real or fake. One is apparently a good vamp and one is bad. Its a race to see who can find all the pieces.
On a side note the audio narrator stops and clears her throat in chapter 26 and it's hilarious!
DNF'd at Pg 146 of 312, aka Chapter 18, or in other words close to 50%. This book is not really terrible, but it simply isn't good enough to keep me reading when there are piles and piles of better books in my TBR.
I picked this up on the off chance that it would turn out interesting, despite the very cliche plot & description. It's heavily inspired by Buffy and tries for some of the snark/comebacks, but overall, the dialogue and internal narration really fell into the category of "trying too hard." At least it wasn't poorly edited.
I'm sure this could be some fun, light reading for someone out there - but considering I stopped reading after a huge showdown fight, it just wasn't for me. Overall, it's way too cliche to hold my interest.
The book was not written well. There seemed to be a disconnect with the characters. I felt like i didn't get to know them and after reading about a third of the way in, I didn't want or care to know. The book grossly resembled the movies and/or books referenced makong ot not original. Also, whoever proofed this book did a horrible job. I was actually getting annoyed with the grammatical errors. I was actually shocked that more were written. I read book one out of courtesy so that i would give it a fair chance. I wont be reading the remainder of the series. I dont think I could stomach it. I didnt research the author, but if this was her first novel, it was quite obvious.
I like the storyline, I thought some parts of it were really different which kept me interested. As the story progressed there were some slow dragging parts that’s why I gave it four stars, it seem like it just took a long time to get from point a to point B let’s say. I really like Cass I think she’s very interesting character that is both strong and naïve and I like Richard, I’m not quite sure what secrets he has but anxious to find out. Judas was one freaky enemy I’m curious to see what awaits in the next book.
I was pleasantly surprised by the story. It is different from other vampire stories, which I loved. It has lost ,it has maybe a budding relationship, it has a girl finding out who she is, and about her mother and her aunt and her father and best friend. The story held me spellbound to finding out how it will end. I must say I'm ready to read book two for follow up. To me it kept you interested in the story and very well written.
This is a very unusual story. It starts out with you thinking that Cass was a different person. She was working in a coffee shop because she had lost her job at the library. She got a text about the article she wrote for school and they said they wanted to hire her. She thought it was a joke. Then Richard shows up and she thinks he sent the text and they get attacked by vampires. Then her world goes crazy.
A single 26 year old with a PHD in Archeology faces off against seemingly insurmountable odds in order to discover her true self. This makes for a great story when you consider her goal, her company, and the enemies that unfold during the telling. I enjoyed this story. The author painted clear picture mental images while telling a rather complex story.
