If you love page-turning crime novels, noir crime thrillers, heist novels, private detective series or detective crime mysteries then Harder They Fall is the book for you.
Hello folks, My name is Solomon Carter, and I am the author of the Roberts and Bradley PI crime thriller series, The Last Line international thriller series, the DI Hogarth Darkest series and more. I write mysteries, crime and thriller novels and more besides.
I was born in Southend, Essex and lived there for most of my life apart from eventful student days in South London. But my life in Southend was even more eventful still. I ended up working in a string of jobs including as a jobcentre clerk, a book seller, tutor for youth with low skills and low self esteem, mortgage broker, and latterly manager of a food bank which dealt with all kinds of interesting people facing all kinds of eye-opening, jaw dropping problems. Because of these ear-to-the-ground jobs the majority of my novels are set in Southend. In 2016 I moved to North Cornwall because I liked the idea of never-ending holidays - but I also write almost every single day. My aim is to write action-packed thrillers and page-turning mysteries that readers love and my hope is to get better at what I do with every book across each and every year.
I like to give away lots of free books as part of what I do. If you would like to receive some of these and get the exclusives on offer, than you're invited to join my free readers group at SolomonCarter.net. What I am good at: telling stories What I am bad at: dancing, being patient. What I love: nature, the seaside, adventures Writers I heartily recommend: Lee Child, Ian Rankin, Henning Mankell, Val McDermid, Harlan Coben, Robert Crais. Writers I need to read more of: Val McDermid, Ian Rankin, Michael Connelly and others. Other things I do beside writing: at present I like to keep my running going to balance out the sitting behind a laptop (a habit inspired by Haruki Murakami's 'What I talk about when I talk about running' - a great book). -I am currently doing surf lessons. When in Rome, as they say... -Getting out into nature as the weather allows.
I look forward to hearing from you. Until then I'll keep on writing. Or running. Or surfing. Or chasing my children around the house.
All the very best, Solomon :)
PS if you have enjoyed any of my books, I'd be honoured if you could post a review. Those reviews really do help!
Harder They Fall is a fast-paced thriller which kept me guessing for a long time and turning pages to find out what was going on. There are two different mystery plots and once you finish this one you will want to continue the series to get more answers.
I really liked the main characters, especially Eva. I loved her attitude and how she dealt with people in different situations. Dan has a short temper, not very useful when dealing with some people but with other abilities which makes him a perfect partner for Eva.
This is my first read by this author and it seems that this is not the first series with these main characters but I didn’t have any issues following the story. Definitely I will continue the series to find out more!
He has done it again. This book is a great read. It will keep you guessing until the end. Liked the weathered DI and how Eva was able to solve not only one but, three murders. Enjoy not the bbok.
Say what you like about these Roberts & Bradley adventures. There may be the occasional typo (Suzi Cruz acquired an initial K in the same chapter) but the characters are always varied and interesting. The hippy-dippy Croyde Crew were so accurately described I could almost name the real-life persons they were based on. As for the action, that's always pressing forward at a pleasing pace. What you get is a quick read about a timely tale and the promise of another episode to follow in due course. What more do you want?
Quite a good book, I like Solomon Carter's books, I did start this a long time ago but for some reason didn't finish it although it looks as if I got near to the end on my kindle, maybe that was the time I had covid! Anyway this book is about private investigators Eva and Dan, Mark who works for them doing their admin comes in very upset one day because he has online support from Camilla Roman who is a member of a commune in Croyde bay in Devon, but he had just heard the news that Camilla had died suddenly and it sounded suspicious to him. He persuaded Eva and Dan to go down to Devon to take a look.
They do and also favour murder and not natural causes. The investigation seems to be going nowhere when another person is murdered, Miss Jolene, who seems to have gone to a meeting with possibly a racist killer. Jolene had written part of a book on the racist killing of a young Londoner and when the man's father had sent pictures of the riots in London which is where the man was killed, Jolene recognises the one who was the possible killer, and he worked alongside them. Eva and Dan do get their man and the story also involves Porton Down who come along to decontaminate the commune as during the postmortem they couldn't identify the substance which killed Camilla. There is also a back story which is where Dan runs along Southend seafront and is shot at by a boxer-type man coming up behind him, it is 6mths later when he is investigating Camilla's death in Devon when he realises that there has been a spate of murders involving his gym and his gym trainer. He also single handed manages to solve that as well!
This was another enjoyable story in the Eva and Dan private investigator series.
This time, Mark implores the couple to look into the death of somebody he admired, all the way in Cornwall...
The case is complex, the characters intriguing, while the scenery is sublime.
It's fast-paced with plenty of action, and though, as usual, there is another personal concurring problem for Dan, we only get answers for the main case.
I did enjoy it and maybe one day I will buy the other stories in this mini-series when finances allow.
Overall, a good and worthy tale with twists and turns that keep you guessing.
The was a great thriller that kept me entranced until the very end. Well worth the read.
I'm sorry I can't be as positive about the editing. The book neded a good editor and evidently it didn't have one. There were instances where conversations occurred with one person talking to themselves, and one glaring error when a participant in a conversation had been dead for several days.
In spite of this, I thought it was an excellent, well written story, and I plan to read more from this author.
Another will written British murder romantic relationship adventure thriller novel by Solomon Carter book one ☝in the Harder They Fall Private Investigator Crime Thriller Series. They are sent to investigate a maybe murder and end up solving a fifteen year old murder. I am a fan of Solomon Carter and recommend all of the series by this author. Enjoy the adventure of reading 👓 or listening 🎶 Alexa as I do because of eye issues and damage. 🏡🔰👒☺ 2022
Harder They Fall by Solomon Carter Terrifying to wake up and feel like something is wrong, a run to clear his head, and the sun reflects a gun. A group called weblebrity, one of them was targeted. The case that Eva and Dan investigate, turns into more twists and turns. They are out of their territory, and have the dour policeman to help them. As usual his writing draws you in and no stopping till the end. Well done, and look for more by author.
Another fabulous, past paced thriller from Solomon Carter featuring Dan and Eva two private investigators. A suspicious death of an on line blogger. Dan and Eva offer their assistance to Leiticia at Croyde house to investigate. Dan has his own issues, just recovered from being shot in the stomach, but still has no clue to why but thinks the shooter may have been a boxer. Two very different cases. Recommend.
I would class myself as an occasional reader. However when I do pick a book to read it needs to grab my attention. I found this book hard to put down, which speaks volumes, my husband even commented; "reading again". Enjoyed it so much that I have downloaded the next book in the series. I have given it 4* because the ending left me a little frustrated, no spoilers, intentional I believe so that I would want to read the next book. 😊
The fall repeats itself with different members of the Crew
A murder mystery that starts with a young man worried about The Croyde Crew . A loosely allied group of bloggers who want to save the world One is killed and the boffins from Port on Down appear . They get in the way of Killigrew- a police inspector who reminds me of Colombo. I loved the book and rush ed to buy the next one before I went this review!
I was captured on page one! What a thriller this turned out to be. The author draws you in with one scene after another which had me asking repeatedly who could possibly be behind the murders. Each character was so believable that anyone could have been capable of the murders. It wasn't until the very end that you found out the guilty. I was ready to get another of Carter's books immediately.I
Another great work of fiction from this author. The harder they fall no 1 is a work of fiction that grips you from the start. Those who enjoy Lee Childs, Karen Rose & James Patterson would enjoy. Solomon draws you in from the first page and the narrative just gets better. Clever idea working 2 cases together, concluding one and the other carries over; I just want to carry on reading.
Seems like a lot of people really liked this one, but I just couldn't get into it. I gave it some time because I really don't like to not finish books, but I was ready for this one to end. It just felt like it dragged on. I found the boxing storyline much more interesting than the main focal storyline. It just seemed repetitive and simple. I think I'm just in the minority on this one, but I do tend to read a lot of mystery/thrillers and just didn't feel thrilled by this one.

WOW! What an incredible read. Gripping right from the start . The detail and depth of the story so gripping you just lose yourself in the book. Well done Solomon and thank you.
Fantastically gripping from the start. So many twists and turns. Very difficult to put the book down. Brilliantly well written.
As usual Solomon Carter gives you two crimes in one book with a cliff hanger where one case is solved by these pair of Private Investigators and a question mark hanging over the other. Dan has been shot in the stomach and barely survived, who did it? Also a blogger is found dead, was it murder? Gripping story.
I'm not a big fan of books with cliff hangers , but I understand this being a series that being done. As for the primary plot it was very well developed. The characters had depth, the settings were vivid, and the story line made sense. Not much more you could ask for.
Loved this book. Fascinating and fast moving from start to finish. Best in series so far I feel. The new setting was fab and topical story lines made it even more interesting.
Clunky and simplistic. Only stuck with it to the end as it's set in North Devon and Cornwall which I know well. Don't think I'll be picking up the sequel which will follow from the loose ends left dangling.
I love this series of books. The relationship between Dan and Eva is so real. The way they both work in such different ways but complement each other to get the case solved is enjoyable. Looking forward to The Stone Girl.
Couldn’t put it done, so now I have to get the next book to follow the story. It’s all at a good pace, well written, keeps you on your toes and has enough meat in it to be interesting and believable.
Eva & Dan take on a case to placate a young intern and find themselves smack in the middle of police and MoD investigations going nowhere! Add in a more personal problem involving Dan's past and you're off!
This represents my introduction to this original series. The cool, analytical Eva is well complemented by the more aggressive Dan, as befits an ex-boxer. The story was nicely written and well researched. The subplot, in which Dan seeks to unmask and confront a horrible assassin, is not resolved in this novel; i look forward to the next to learn more.
I have found this book hard going. It starts Ok but then I found it really boring as the story just seems to go round in circles and doesn't move on. I am sorry to say I gave up on this book about half way through.
Was very suspenseful. Kept me guessing who the killer was.. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys the suspense of who done it. I will read more of this author s books.
As usual with all Solomon’s books just could not put it down. Got to know Southend well in all his previous books now it looks like I’m going to get to know north Devon just as well. Your books are the best keep ‘em coming. James
