Witchbane Novella #2

One hundred years ago, a sheriff’s posse killed dark warlock Rhyfel Gremory, but his witch-disciples escaped, and their magic made them nearly immortal. To keep their power, each year one of the witch-disciples kills a descendant of one of the men in the posse, a twelve-year cycle that has cost dozens of lives, including that of Seth Tanner’s brother, Jesse.

Seth uncovers a cycle of ritual murders that feed the witch-disciples’ power, and he saves Evan Malone, one of the warlock’s potential victims. Neither Seth nor Evan expected to fall in love, but when the dust settles, they find themselves on the run and on the road together, heading toward Pittsburgh, on the trail of the next killer.

Seth wonders whether Evan will come to regret his choice to stay together, now that he’s living the reality of Seth’s nomadic life and the risks that come with it. He wants Evan to stay, but he’s afraid that Evan would be better off without him, living a normal life. Evan’s whole world has been upended, but there’s one thing he’s sure of, his love for Seth. Evan worries that he’s a liability, not yet able to hold his own in Seth’s rough-and-tumble world, but determined to do whatever necessary to have Seth’s back. On the way to face the next warlock, supernatural threats abound, forcing them to learn to fight as a team.

Fate and danger threw them together. But once the adrenaline fades, will love last?

Burn by Morgan Brice
Witchbane series #1.5. Paranormal M-M romance and mystery novella. Dual POV.
After meeting and saving Evan from a dark warlock’s ritual murders, Seth fell in love.
They are headed together to Pittsburgh on the trail of the next killer, the next warlock. It’s a nomadic and dangerous lifestyle and both are concerned that the other may be rethinking their new relationship. In the meantime, there is no shortage of evil that needs to be stopped.

It’s a fairly new relationship so there is angst between them, “will he stay” etc. Individually, both are in love. Now, they have to survive the warlocks, ghouls and murderers.

Best line:

This is actually listed as Book #1.5 in the series but it is actually book #2 even though only 120 pages in length. What it lacks in length it more than makes up for in content. This series really does need to be read in order...so we pick up from the end of Witchbane.#1. Seth and Evan are trying to recover and move forward in their relationship, which is having its ups and downs. Seth worries about how he can protect Evan and goes too far in the other direction. I believe that Evan needs to confront his insecurities and the bigger than life changes that have taken place in his life. Throughout it all we get to follow along as they battle creepy nasties of all types, which I highly enjoyed. We have enough “nasties” in our world and certainly don’t need anymore. As in the last book, there was a lot of action in this story. Wish it had been longer.

A Joyfully Jay review.

Burn is book 1.5 in the Witchbane series, following up a couple of weeks after the end of the first book. It is a shorter story and it is sort of a like an extended coda to the main story, giving us a glimpse into how things are developing after the happy ending of that first book. Given that, Burn is best read after Witchbane, as while the blurb does give a great recap of that story, you will miss how the guys began their relationship, as well as the foundation for the larger series, if you start here.

I really loved Witchbane and I enjoyed this peek into how things are faring for Seth and Evan. Sometimes follow up stories leave me feeling like the author is messing with the guys’ relationship just for the sake of another book, but here I think it worked well. While the men do struggle and deal with problems, it felt very natural given how fast they got together and how new the relationship is. Their concerns made sense, and (after a couple of stupid mistakes) the guys talk things through and work it all out. Along the way, the pair also are fighting a series of supernatural bad guys, which keeps the excitement high and prevents the story from getting too bogged down in the relationship drama.

I really like Morgan Brice's stories, and usually she gets the chemistry between her characters just right. Weirdly there's something that just didn't work between these guys in this episode. I've listened to Burn and that one worked just fine, so maybe this episode is just too short for all the sex she's packed in?

Fans of this series will still enjoy this one, especially if you're listening to Kale Williams perform them. His serious, matter-of-fact delivery works so well and is pretty effective when it comes to the sexy-times.

Yelp this is a Supernatural salute of Sam and Dean fanfiction. Besides who doesn't like a training session that ended in a coal mining town. A town so smoke infused it reminds one of the Silent Hill game. I mean who doesn't get concerned about a cobalt infestation.

3.5 stars rounded up because...still no 1/2 stars here on Goodreads...

More things that go bump in the night...

'Burn' is the second story or more accurately it's story #1.5 in Morgan Brice's 'Witchbane' series and essentially picks up where 'Witchbane' leaves off. Sonny and Seth have survived the events of Halloween and defeated the dark forces that had been determined to see Sonny sacrificed to the dark wizard and his disciples in their quest for power and eternal life.

As Seth and Sonny begin to work at settling into a life together both men find that they are continuing to repeat their mistakes...mistakes based on experiences from their past. This combined with fighting a paranormal creature or two or maybe even twelve leads to a breakdown in communication between them and it's only through sheer determination on Sonny's part that things finally get resolved when he confronts Seth. It's not a perfect fix but more like the beginning of one and I'm sure there are going to be some rough times ahead but Sonny's persistent efforts are beginning to pay off and it feels like Seth is beginning to accept that Sonny is right where he wants to be.

While this story wasn't quite as enjoyable for me as the first one there were definite elements that I not only liked but hope to see more of in future stories...things like Seth and Sonny's interaction with some of the other hunters' in their network and I admit I'm hoping for even more relationship development between these two...maybe a bit more banter. I liked hearing Sonny step up and be a bit more assertive when Seth was hurt, not that he's by any means a shrinking violet but it was sweet to hear him get a bit protective about his man when one of the hunters asked them to go out on a mission before Seth had fully healed from the last one he'd been on.

Kale Williams is once again the narrator for the audio book, he continues to make the story all the more enjoyable with his rich narrative and character voices and I'm looking forward to joining Seth and Sonny for 'Dark Rivers' where they journey to Pittsburgh in a battle against an ancient evil that will cost them more than their lives if they lose.

The story takes place immediately after the end of Witchbane and it's best to not read it as a standalone book.

Well, as expected, these two are having a lot of issues with their relationship as they really don't know each other and trust is not something that any of them will easily give. Communication is hard for them and most of the time, honesty seems to be... optional :P

But they are trying, and I like that here the author is addressing the fact that they still have a lot of work to do if they want a healthy (and lasting) relationship.

Way better than the first, so I took the right decision when I choose to keep reading the series. Oh, and Kale Williams' narration is superb.

Note: This novella takes place directly after the events of Witchbane. It isn’t recommended that this be read as a standalone as it contains major spoilers for the first book in the series.

Seth and Evan have escaped the horrific death that the witch-follower had planned for him. Evan is beyond grateful to Seth and he’s still adjusting to his new reality. He had no idea about this shadow world of ghosts and witches and zombies and other scary monsters that go bump in the night. Seth has tried not to overwhelm him, but honestly he needs him to very careful and watchful because they could be attacked at any time. Evan is no slouch – he’s studied martial arts for years. But as he discovered, he is no match for supernatural enemies right now. Seth vows to keep him safe, but Evan sees it as Seth not trusting him and not seeing him as an equal. Given his past with this ex, this is extremely difficult for him and his first reaction is always to go on the defensive.

Seth is terrified that a) Evan will figure out he can do MUCH better than Seth, a loner monster hunter and b) Evan will get tired of the constant danger and the nomadic existence Seth leads and c) Seth will not be able to protect Evan and Evan will get hurt or worse. Evan needs to be seen as an equal and he wants to help Seth. He wants to contribute and he wants Seth to take him seriously and not try to keep him away from the danger – especially because Evan is worried that without him Seth will take unnecessary risks when together, they could be so much stronger.

This novella focuses on the building relationship between Evan and Seth. They have a difficult time communicating their needs and more importantly, their fears to each other. The only time they seem to be on the same page is during sex – and boy – there is quite a lot of it in this short novella! I honestly could have done with a little less sex and a little more talking in this one. They need to figure out a way to be more honest with each other, since not doing that could get them killed. Again, Kale Williams does a great job with the voices and the emotional levels in this novella. I’m looking forward to the next story in this series.

BURN is a fast-paced novella that takes place right after the events in the novel WITCHBANE. Evan and Seth are adjusting to their new life of battling supernatural threats together. The monsters they fight are fascinating, and as a student of Southern folklore I was glad to see a “boo hag” included in the mix. But the emphasis here is on the brand-new romantic relationship between Even and Seth, as they work through their own self-doubts and try to forge a life together. Like all of Morgan Brice’s novels and novellas, BURN is a fascinating mix of urban fantasy, action, and M/M romance. Highly recommended!

Hmmm. I forgot to record this. It's a nice continuation with the guys learning to live together meanwhile tackling some more obscure creatures while trying to track down the bad guys. I did get a bit frustrated with Seth and his continuous thoughts that Evan would get tired of this and leave him and as a result he took stupid risks (in part to "protect" Ethan) and ended up causing more trouble for their relationship than if he'd been up front. Still it was a fun addition.

Review in English and Polish || Recenzja po angielsku i polsku

After Evan and Seth defeated the witch-disciple and came out of this alive, it might seem that they would be able to overcome all obstacles. It turns out, however, that fighting with paranormal beings, although Evan wants to help his boyfriend with this job, is not the only problem waiting for the lovers. Their relationship is completely new and it was build in a hurry, which means that although these two are sure of their own feelings for each other, they begin to have doubts if the other party really feels the same way they do. Unexpectedly, they start to pay closer attention to their every gesture, word and behavior, which makes the atmosphere around them really tense. To make matters worse, their hunts are far from ideal, which also makes them worry. And so the first storm clouds loom on the horizon.

Starting this review I must admit that there's a lot we can write about "Burn", although it is just a short novella. First of all, Morgan Brice undoubtedly was fully aware of the fact that after a crazy race against time and a difficult fight for survival, Seth and Evan deserve to finally let themselves think their relationship and their fragile bond over. The story the author presented in this novella is very much based on this subject. The characters don't feel too confident in a new relationship and they are struggling not only with their own feelings, but also with their guesses about the feelings of the other person. Consequently, in "Burn" we are able to see a whole kaleidoscope of various emotions that life and love entail. I think it's important that the author doesn't show us a relationship without any worries and full of joy, which is immediately perfect as if in a fairy tale, but allows her characters to build it on the same rules on which in the real life the relationships are often build – on knowing each other and fight with everyday problems.

What is more, in "Burn", the author presented in a perfect and fully satisfying way the paranormal creatures that the hunters must deal with, and thus also our lead characters, Seth and Evan. In this little bit more than one hundred pages long novella, Morgan Brice gave us the opportunity to participate not in one, but in several hunts for a variety of paranormal beings. Thanks to that fact our knowledge about the universe in which this story is set and the creatures that inhabit it gradually expands. However, lets note that the author showed us not only the creatures that in the majority we know quite well, as we repeatedly read about them in various books or watched some films and TV shows about them, but she made some researches in other countries' and cultures' bestiary. This undoubtedly makes not only this novella but the whole series even more interesting, unique and really addictive. It also makes us look forward to our next adventure alongside the characters we love.

Another undoubted advantage of "Burn" is the fact that the author, much more than in the previous volume, put emphasis on the relations of the main characters, in particular of Seth, with secondary characters. Although we already knew that they are largely part of this young hunter's life, it seems to me that we didn't really feel it that much. But now, more than ever, we feel that Toby, Milo and Mark are not only Seth's friends and teachers, but above all his friends and family. By sharing their advice, personal information and their history, they let us – the readers – get to know them better and because of that we start to really like them much more than while reading "Witchbane". Morgan Brice showed us that she not only can perfectly create the main characters of her stories, but she also knows how to open our hearts to her secondary characters. Even to those whom we haven't yet met "personally", but whom we are beginning to adore.

To sum up, "Burn" indeed is just a short novella, but it is full of valuable content. It allows the reader to participate in the hunt for paranormal beings, while watching with bated breath how the lead characters deal with their love dramas. In addition, it ignites the desire to reach for the next volumes of the series and deepen our knowledge about the characters about which we read. It's really a perfect story we quickly fall in love with.

Podsumowując, „Burn” to zaledwie krótka nowela, jednak mieści w sobie naprawdę wiele treści. To naprawdę perfekcyjna opowieść!

Seth is a lovesick foll, and Evan is really the only reason i'll keep reading this series. it's not a bad series, it's just not my cup of tea and Seth's insecurities are not helping me like it. I do like that they do have issues to work out as a couple. i dispise the whole meet and love under tension and then carry on as if they have been together for ever. and so the very fact that Seth has insecurities pleases me. so yeah, not the most helpful review, but i don't understand my feeling either, so we even.

Book 2 continues with Seth and Evan's story. For me, this was not a continuation of how Seth and Evan met up, but a story of learning to work together and how to be a couple while chasing done monsters. Both men have not done well in past relationships so both are leary and have lots of self doubts. In the meantime, Seth teaches Evan simple spells, history of monster and physical training. I would call this a HFN as there is more to come. I listened on audible. I was a quick and easy listen.

Well, it's only been a couple of weeks since doing battle with the witch disciple after Evan. Seth and he have been busy doing side jobs, which basically translates to going after other monsters on their way to finding the next descendant on the radar of the witch disciples.

The witch disciples are a group who, through ritual killing, use the energy of the descendants of the sheriff and his deputies responsible for killing their leader decades earlier to keep themselves alive.

While going from place to place in an RV that belonged to Seth's parents, the guys battle an irate Spectre from a haunted painting, return a Boo Hag to the ether, and Seth battles a few zombies.

The worst battle comes from the demons inside themselves, however. Seth doesn't believe he is good enough for Evan, and soon he will see just how hard life as a hunter is and leave. Evan's demons mock in different ways, reminding him of past relationships gone bad, and putting fear and doubt in his mind that his relationship with Seth might end just as badly.

The guys have a long way to go before fully trusting each other. If they don't learn the importance of trust and reliance soon, it isn't their relationship they will need to worry about dying. Just to catch you up.

This series is taking a little longer to grow on me than the Badlands. I am enjoying it very much, from a paranormal aspect, but I haven't felt the same chemistry yet between the guys that I did with Simon and Vic, in the Badlands.

Seth and Even have a different kind of relationship however, so I have to bear that in mind. While Simon and Vic dealt with supernatural beings and we're in danger sometimes, with Simon being a psychic medium and Vic a homicide detective, they don't live like front line soldiers, Seth and Even do. Seth gets calls, sometimes in the middle of the night, and often back to back, and he has to hunt down whatever monster is tormenting humans. He is constantly battling, and until Even, he hunted alone.

Morgan creates the most fascinating worlds, and I am always blown away by how much effort and work she puts into knowing the lore, and legend behind a creature, pagan ritual, or religious aspect. As hot and sMMoldering as the sMMexy times are, the world-building and supernatural elements are my favorite.

Now we just gotta get those boys to communicate better and this old dragon lady will be content.

I am looking forward to seeing what the guys get up to next.

This story picks up a couple of weeks after the events of Witchbane. I really liked that both Seth and Evan are still finding their way in their relationship and that neither settles into it like they’ve been together forever, and ditto with the monster hunting. They both have doubts about the other’s feelings, and this story explores that, which makes their situation and growing relationship much more realistic.

One of the other things I love about this story is that Seth has a ‘day job’ to bring in money when he’s not monster hunting, and in this vein he gives Evan the opportunity to do the same. I also liked that Evan didn’t automatically know what to do to take on his new role to have Seth’s back, but had to train hard to learn about the new world he’s now in. On the flip side, I thought the author did a great job in showing how Seth has to rethink his own strategies. There is a big difference in going into a fight not caring if you survive, as opposed to having a reason to live. The fight scenes are very edge-of-seat and wonderfully tense and action-packed.

As with the other stories by this author, there are references to characters in their wider universe, and I must admit I squeed a little at that, although it makes me realize I have a lot of backlist to still read through as I’ve ‘met’ some of these characters, but not others yet. I really like Toby and Milo and would love to read more about them, so hoping that is coming in a future book—or is in one I still need to read. Watching the slow building of a network of “overly independent hunters” is going to be fun, and I’m very much looking forward to it.

Although this story is a novella, it felt like I was reading a novel because of the depth of the world building, and characterisation, and my only complaint is that I’m now waiting for the next story in the series.

I’d recommend Burn to readers who enjoy urban fantasy with realistic characters, fabulous action scenes, and a story that is part of a larger universe.

Naked Bubble Wrap Rolling (an audio review)

I really enjoyed Witchbane and so had high hopes for Burn. This novella sees Seth and Evan take a break from fighting warlocks to fighting ghosts and zombies. They also find time for sex, so that’s helpful.

What they struggle with is talking to each other. I understand that’s the underlying conflict for the entire story, but after a while I just wanted to bop their heads together to see if some sense could be knocked into them. Both have reservations and doubts about the relationship – it didn’t start conventionally (more like with a bang) and it has been filled with high action and massive amounts of tension. So are they together because of the adrenaline, because neither has a true home, or because they just don’t know how to quit each other?

I believe there is love there. Or at least some true affection with a whole bunch of hot sex. But while they struggle with trust, there are feelings of jealousy and streaks of independence. A simple conversation could have cleared up most of the misunderstandings.

That being said, there are lots of things in this book for Morgan Brice fans and paranormal junkies to sink their teeth into. I liked the variety of demons, witches, ghosts, and zombies they took on.

I’m looking forward to the next full book as the men continue their journey to destroy all the warlocks determined to wipe out all descendants of the lawmen responsible for the demise of their head honcho. It’s a little convoluted but Ms. Brice is able to keep the story logical so I’m excited.

Kale Williams again narrated this story and I was so pleased. His voice is nice to listen to and he gives each man a distinctive voice. I always enjoy his performances and they’re always solid and reliable. Overall a good audio to listen to. (4.5 rounded up)

A Scattered Thoughts and Roguew Words review

“Burn” is a novella in the Witchbane series, making this part 1.5. As such, it really doesn’t work as a standalone and you should absolutely read part 1 first.

The thing that probably bothered me most about “Witchbane”, the first book in the series, was the rather sloppy editing. I hate bad editing with a passion. But I’m glad to say that the editing in “Burn” is much, much better.

This novella picks up right after where book one left off. I have a thing for established couples. I like to see what happens after the HEA (or the HFN). “Burn” didn’t disappoint in that regard. Daily life as nomadic hunters of supernatural creatures is hard. Where before, Evan felt like the more insecure one, it’s now Seth who’s struggling to believe in their relationship.

While the relationship is definitely once more a very important part of the story, we now also get to see more actual hunting. We meet several new different creatures and at least one of them was completely new to me. There was also more world building in general, with a more in-depth view into the way magic works in this world. It’s no secret that I have a thing for myths and legends, so I really liked those parts.

There was quite a lot of sex once again. The two occasionally behaved like horny teenagers with very little self-control. It was a bit too much for me at times, tbh.

All in all, I enjoyed “Burn” more than “Witchbane”. It actually made me curious to find out what happens next, so I think I’ll keep reading this series. If you liked the first part of the series, you’ll like this novella too. It’s absolutely worth reading.

The cover is very similar to that of the first part, it has the same spooky look to it.

If you follow my audiobook reviews, you know that I wasn't completely in love with Witchbane, Book 1 in the Witchbane series. Burn, even though a novella, was better, and I found myself really getting into the story. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series now and have already downloaded the next book. Let's get into the review.

Story: 4 Stars
I'm going to be honest with you, I wasn't expecting much. This was Witchbane and a short novella, but I was proven wrong. The book put Seth and Evan more on an even playing ground, although, Seth has some issues and needs to get over them. This time though, the banter and interaction was enjoyable instead of borderline annoying. I liked this addition to the story and am really looking forward to the rest of the series. Great interaction, great characters, and I loved the action in this one. 4 stars!

Narration: 4.5 stars
Kale Williams is back for Burn, and once again, he has made the characters his. The pace was good and steady, and each character was made an individual with the different voices and annunciation. I thoroughly enjoyed his version of this book. 4.5 stars!

Overall: 4 Stars
Loved this book, and I can't wait to read the rest of the series. Because I liked Burn so much, I have already downloaded the next book in the series. Leery at first, Morgan Brice blew me away, and I'm thinking as this series goes on, I'll find myself enjoying it more and more. The characters have grown on me and I want to see what happens next. I couldn't stop listening. Overall, 4 stars!

3 stars for story and narration.

Kale Williams does get the emotion through and he brings the characters to life and his Seth comes through strong but Evan... his Evan though I don't know, it's not there. Maybe it's because of the characters attitude and his constant back and forth.

I'll be writing 1 review for Witchbane, Burn and Dark Rivers and repeating to the each book's page 'cos I listened to them back to back and the plots in my head are all intertwined.

In the Witchbane series we follow Seth and Evan (and if I understood correctly maybe some new characters from the 3rd book onwards?) on a witch hunt against a warlock's disciples that murder the descendants of a Sheriff's posse, that caught and killed said warlock a couple hundred years back, to gain immortality.

Evan was the first descendant Seth saved and maybe because of circumstances they dropped the L-bomb pretty quickly. Evan had a really nice tendency of TSTL and both of them went on doing one stupid thing after another, making stupid decisions aplenty. That was kinda fixed by the 2nd book but the #1 and #1.5 was a merry-go-round of idiocy.

The inner monologues and the repetition of facts already given were a bit tiring as well as the highs in the story and then the falling flats.

In the 2nd book there were a lot of new characters added from the midway point and I kinda lost the ball there especially since there are 2 characters with similar names (Brent and Brett or something), and the narration didn't really help, but I'm curious to see how it'll play out in the next book.

This series is a bit more gory than the Badlands was/is so that took me by surprise and compared to Badlands it has less mystery. I like the series and their supernatural aspect that's why I'll continue listening to them even though I don't love them.

On the heels of the dramatic events in Witchbane Seth and Evan are faced with the reality of what life will look like if they stay the course. Evan struggles to reconcile everything that was with everything that could be and Seth is always assuming Evan will wise up and leave. With both of them avoiding the communication that matters they're getting farther away from where they both yearn to be but don't know how to get to. They've got a lot of work and confessing to do if they're going to build a foundation and make progress toward a solid partnership.

This was a great novella to connect books one and two of the series because it delves into both of their hangups as well as giving a sense of what else is out there in the world of hunters. We're able to see the ups and downs of adjusting to the relationship that started with such drama. Seeing them both training and hunting keeps the overarching plot fresh in our minds and also gives us a chance to see how they work together in a more "normal" setting and I have to say that I think they make a great team...they just need to get on the same page and stay on it. It's not all happiness and roses, in fact, aside from their passion Burn is mostly filled with a lot of frustration, mistrust, second-guessing, and hurt. When the big decisions come it's not without pain, but it is honest. Burn is a believable segue between the uncertainty after Witchbane to all the crazy that's coming in Dark Rivers.

Fate and danger threw Seth & Evan together. But once the adrenaline fades, will their love last?

Seth and Evan are traveling together towards their new adventure while trying to get reacquainted without the rush of adrenaline and danger. Both were dealing with their own insecurities and struggling to communicate with one another. Seth kept worrying about putting Evan in danger while Evan questioned if maybe their connection wasn’t what they both thought it was.

It was a treat to read how both Seth and Evan were trying to make their new found relationship work despite having doubts about where they stood. I loved the fact that their connection was still intact and better yet, that it kept thriving in the midst of their adventures. It helped that their chemistry was as strong as ever, which served to keep that connection strong.

I enjoyed visiting with the boys and taking part on their adventure. The thrills continued for Seth and Evan with plenty of fast-paced action and supernatural encounters.

At only 100+ pages of content, BURN packs a punch both in the romance department and supernatural elements. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for Seth and Evan on their next! All in all, a great follow-up story in the Witchbane series.

The action in this novella takes place about a hundred years after a powerful warlock was killed by a sheriff and his posey. Since then ever so often one of the descendents of offspring of the family of those men is murdered. It is this century old war that Seth Tanner has been a soldier in for a number of years till he rescues Evan Malone who loses his home due to the attack and is given a place to sleep in Seth's big mobile trailer.

They start out by having feelings for each other, including sex and Evan is introduced to the rest of the war, with fighting ghosts who special power, and zombies who bite. He is unsure about his ability and Seth is worried about Evan staying with him. After all, Evan has op tions, he has talents that would earn him a more mainstream way of life. We, the reader, get to watch while they agoonize at cross-purposes for what seems like a long while, but is likely only a day or two. Finally, we get the impression that this could is going to stick out and have further adventures.

I recommend it to anywhere who enjoys watching two people fight with accepting what is given while worrying about whether they are good enough...on both sides. it doesn't hurt if you are a person who enjoys some hot sex scenes between two gay men.

Watch out for...

Seth and Evan are my M/M fantasy of Supernatural and Grimm come to life. I also think it could be fun to visit some of those places if I could be brave enough. We pick up from the end of Witchbane. They’re trying to recover and move forward in their relationship, which has its ups and downs. Seth worried about how he can protect Evan goes too far in the other direction, I think, and Evan has to confront his insecurities and the myriad changes in his life. Throughout it all we get to follow along as they battle nasties of all types, which I highly enjoyed.

I adored their silly wand humor and approve of Evan’s beer preferences. I also vote yes for Seth’s creative thoughts about bubble wrap. I really like Toby’s sense of humor and am glad Seth has him and Milo as friends. I think they give him perspective. I loved seeing Evan and Seth grow closer even if they frustrated me at times. They really do make a fantastic team, and I can’t wait to see them kick warlock butt.

Burn continues the story of Seth and Evan. The book focuses more on the development of the relationship instead of an overarching single monster hunting quest. That does not mean that action and hunting were not important parts of the storyline. The men fought a number of different monsters instead of one main target. The hunts and times between served to show how Seth and Evan were learning to navigate their relationship and work together. Evan is still dealing with the effects of his trauma over being stalked. Seth is having a much harder time trusting that Evan will choose him. He makes some decisions that could potentially damage their relationship along the way. Seth is learning to trust that Evan can hold his own in a fight, but he has a long way to go in believing that what he can provide is good enough for Evan to stay. I look forward to seeing where their adventures take them next. I highly recommend this series.

I listened to the audiobook. The narrator did a great job.

Second in series (Witchbane), must be read in order. Novella. Paranormal. Established couple. Dual POV.

Picking up almost immediately after the first book, this is a quick glimpse into Evan learning the hunter trade while Seth questions whether Evan will want to stay for the long term in such a dangerous partnership. The reader gets a quick introduction to a series of supernatural beings and how Evan and Seth must deal with them.

This story felt more like an intermission as we get a large concentration of world building in a shorter book and more relationship quandaries as Evan and Seth try to settle into a more established and committed relationship. There is plenty of action, steam and a lead up to more honest communication about both men's personal fears and reasons for doubting the relationship will work. I still am invested in these characters and the life they are building together, and look forward to more adventures and spicy times with them. 4.5 rounded up
