Liturgical Worship: A Lutheran Introduction

Rate this book
Liturgical worship is often viewed as nothing more than an outdated tradition, or a series of meaningless words and motions. The reality, however, is much different. The form of worship that is often described as liturgical, or traditional, has strong roots in both Scripture and Christian history. In this book, Rev. Cooper explains the Biblical and theological foundations of liturgical worship. This is then followed by chapters on various aspects of the worship service. The meaning of each element is illuminated alongside of the rich Scriptural teaching within these aspects of Christian worship. At the end of the work, a glossary is included which serves as a guide for those who are unfamiliar with liturgical terminology.

I love this book because it shows a real appreciation and respect for the history of the Church and our family in the faith. We are not alone in our worship, for we continue in this worship with the saints that have gone before us. And today, we are connected to our brothers and sisters around the world! I loved that the author took the time to show that these traditions did not pop out of nowhere but have a rich, meaningful history in the Church and that they have their foundation in Scripture. Furthermore, they are the practice of our confession, and they teach us as we do them. This is the ideal book for any layperson wanting to know more about the liturgy, or for any pastor looking for a handy reference guide. You will be encouraged and edified in reading about this rich history and gift we have in the liturgy.

This is the THIRD book that I have read on the topic of worship. I have read "Meaningful Worship" by James Brauer. I have also read "Gathered Guests" by Timothy Maschke. This book was superior to both by a lot. It was readable, the historical context and concerns driving various practices were discussed, and it wasn't short enough to be a worthy introduction (much like "Meaningful Worship" is short).

I learned a lot reading this book, and admittedly, I should maybe be embarrassed that I learned so much, after all, I've been a pastor now for 13+ years. However, there were things I forgot, or things that weren't covered in my education.

I was grateful that this book did not get bogged down in discussion of the many types of vestments and their historical development. This book had a laser focus and didn't deviate from it.

I would gladly and heartily recommend this book to any Lutheran who desires to learn more about WHY we worship the way that we do.
