This is the THIRD book that I have read on the topic of worship. I have read "Meaningful Worship" by James Brauer. I have also read "Gathered Guests" by Timothy Maschke. This book was superior to both by a lot. It was readable, the historical context and concerns driving various practices were discussed, and it wasn't short enough to be a worthy introduction (much like "Meaningful Worship" is short).
I learned a lot reading this book, and admittedly, I should maybe be embarrassed that I learned so much, after all, I've been a pastor now for 13+ years. However, there were things I forgot, or things that weren't covered in my education.
I was grateful that this book did not get bogged down in discussion of the many types of vestments and their historical development. This book had a laser focus and didn't deviate from it.
I would gladly and heartily recommend this book to any Lutheran who desires to learn more about WHY we worship the way that we do.
