Viet Nam! For me, a topic that always stirs up something deep within me. This book, however, touched me on a deeper level than any other book on the subject that I've read. It even moved me far more than the documentary that the magnificent story teller Ken Burns created a year or two ago.
As I read the book, I'll admit I've never felt such a stirring of pride and love for my fellow Viet Nam veteran as I did while I was turning those pages. American has the right to be extremely proud of its young men and women who served our beautiful country during that time that "tried men's souls."
Like the bumper sticker used to proclaim, "Viet Nam. I've been there."
This book is full of personal stories from a variety of Vietnam Vets, along with many photos taken by the vets themselves. Although my age caused me to miss the “Vietnam Era” by a mere two months, I still went on to spend 38 years in the Air Force, and developed a deep kinship with my fellow airmen who were there. I always felt sorrow for those vets who came home expecting a welcome, only to find derision. I’m glad all vets are now finally being welcomed home. This particular book was billed as the “Iowa Edition,” although none of the vets portrayed are indicated to be Iowans. Other states have their own edition, but I’m guessing the books are all the same. Also includes a 60 minute dvd documentary.
