I received Extrication as part of a Goodreads Giveaway and began reading it the instant the congratulatory email arrived. Extrication mixes a near-apocalyptic modern world and futuristic space travel with fairytale aspects while including a healthy dose of espionage and assassins.
Unfortunately, I am mixed when it comes to my opinion of Extrication. I absolutely adore spies, aliens, assassins, dragons, elves, mysteries, and betrayal, and this book features all of those items in one neat little bundle. I enjoyed hearing about Two and seeing her developments throughout the story, however, I do wish there was more background on the Institute.
Honestly, while it was a nice read, I don't see myself rereading Extrication. The book features so many different aspects that it is hard to see how they all quite mesh together. I wasn't sure how I felt seeing aliens, dragons, and elves all in the same area with space travel and assassins roaming about. It felt like too much, but that's my personal taste. I suspect a romance or science fiction fan would be absolutely in love with the mixture, but it isn't for me.
Loved the book, the story was well written and the characters were intriguing. Once I started I could not get enough, from the start till the end I was engrossed I was even on the edge of my seat with twists and turns, lust and passion, strength happiness and funny. The story of sensation. Do yourself a favor and buy the book you want be disappointed. Thank you for allowing me to review your book.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Extrication (Veiled Eliminators Book 1) has a complex and inventive plot that matches the book's unique world building, completely unlike any romance I've read in some time. Two and Four, or Starla and David are interesting and sad characters: torn from their families as children, memories wiped and trained to be soldiers. They never really have a chance to rebel against the pair who run the facility, Schmidt and Schultz, until after their task is completed. The dialogue is crisp and descriptive, the writers staging the scenes and providing colorful imagery for each event. I enjoyed this installment, and can't wait to read the next book, Virama.
I was provided a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
I never read a science fiction/fantasy romance before, so I was looking forward to digging into the series when I won the first two books in a contest at the Book Carousel (a Facebook Group where eXtasy Books and Devine Destinies readers and authors gather to participate in games, giveaways, contests, etc.)
Since part of my blog is dedicated to reviewing books, I looked forward to reading Extrication.
The series blurb and book blurb say it all, so I’ll get right to the review. First, I’ve been reading a lot of books lately that are co-authored, and I must confess this is new to me, and something that I’m enjoying, because I can’t tell which author is writing which part. Bravo to this duo. They did a great job combining their own voices to blend as one for Extrication.
As for the plot, this was rock solid. I enjoyed the background I was fed that wasn’t overkill. It was simply enough to explain to me the setting and dilemma of Two’s mission. She has her misgivings, and she’s not happy about it, but she’s accepting because this is how she’s been trained since the age of five, I do believe.
Two has a wonderful arc. She goes from an accepting trainee to a woman fighting for her individual rights. And she has help from Four, a man from the men’s institute that’s been appointed to aid her.
I liked the tension between them. There was a great push and pull. Once they’re on the run it’s all action and romance. I could not stop reading! There is also great world building that really intrigued me.
A very intriguing concept for this book and it's new series. Teens trained as assassins from early childhood reminds me of the tv series DARK ANGEL! Which was good also.
Taken away at childhood from her family, memory wiped, and trained to be a skilled assassin, Two, formerly the child “Starla”, has become an eliminator sent on assignment through the portal to assassinate a rogue general, then activate her own microchip to wipe her memory of the event. But this time she is uncomfortable and rebels against the Institute. Seeking help from her partner, Four, they will do all that they can to find a way to escape from their detestable future as tools under the control of the director, Doctor Schultz, and the assistant director, Doctor Schmidt.
This is a sci-fi theme I have encountered several times before, but it is well done in this book and makes an impact on the reader. Emboldened by the precious flashbacks of who she was before her capture, Two is stronger than she realizes when she fights against her life-long indoctrination training and begins instead to regain her rights as an individual to think for herself and be free. Great character development and empathy engendered in the reader make this a memorable story line that touches the emotions!
