Death should be final, but in LaPierre, there are no guarantees. Child Lost, a refugee from the state foster system, thought her heart was safe when she let the friendly spirit of a dead dog into her life. When her new best friend was ripped away and cast back into the aether of the afterworld, life for Child became something you just do until you die. Now a shocking inheritance from a family she never knew will force her to make decisions about her future and the future of LaPierre. With the town's protective wards destroyed by Child's hasty actions, the magical community of the town must join together, from witches to Voudouns, to exorcise an evil that threatens the children of LaPierre. Child must face her own fears of risking her heart or abandon these innocent lives the same way she, herself, was abandoned as a young girl. The Haints and Hot Steams Trilogy is a Southern Gothic contemporary fantasy with themes of alternative belief systems and found family. Good continuation of Crooked Crossroads, but some editing issues - punctuation, missing or wrong words, a few spots that could use an extra sentence or two (or word or two!) to add clarity - and some minor continuity issues. Some minor things needed to be followed up on - or the inclusion of the scene(s) makes little sense. Maybe they will be picked up in a later book, but it would seem unlikely. As much as I'm enjoying the story, it really needs another round with an editor - or a critical reader the author trusts. Lose one star for editing issues. All that said, I still pre-ordered book 3, Graveyard Grit - which now (6/19) seems to be on hold .
This second book was a bit darker then the first but I'm totally into the characters and storyline. I'm going to finish book three today and I can't wait to find out how Child manages to finally find the happy ending (I hope ) she deserves.
