Second Taste: Book a Break anthology 2018

Nourishment. That's food, but more than food. It's hope, love, belief, fulfilment. It's in our flesh and in our minds. And in one way or another, it's in the stories comprising this remarkable anthology. Here are the best stories selected from submissions to the Book a Break short story competition. 'Nourishment' was the theme, and each of the authors here used it to craft a story unique in its interpretation, delicious in its composition. With ingredients ranging from humour to philosophy to raw, piquant emotion, these stories are guaranteed to entertain, satisfy and leave you just hungry enough that you'll want to come back for more. Contributing Laura Theis, Boris Glikman, Gayatri Swaminathan, Arron Evans, Susanna Bellini, John Paul Davies, Steve Wade, Tom Wolosz, Susanna Callaghan, Emily Lomax, Parker McIntosh, Alexandra Hademenos, Cath Barton, Irma Goderdzishvili, Laura Geall, Anais Jay, Kriss Nichol, Moomal Ahmed, Thomas MacColl, Matt Gibson, Julian Cope, Radhika Borde, Jeremy Forge. The proceeds from this book go to the Against Malaria Foundation.

I grew up in Wales, was educated in England and have spent most of my life in France. I've been writing since the age of 10, when my first poem was sent to a competition by my English teacher. After moving to France, I ran a café-theatre till it got demolished, whereupon I scratched my head, wondering what to do next. Eventually I became a university lecturer, specialising in Second Language Acquisition, even though (apart, obviously, from French) I've spectacularly failed to learn any languages (I'm currently trying Dutch and can already say 'The turtle eats the sandwich', which is very encouraging). I spent two years in Mayotte, a tiny, unknown island in the Indian Ocean, which France bought for 1000 piastres in 1842. Magali Rousseau (my heroine) got into a lot of trouble there, but now, like me, she's back in Provence, where she jogs, paints, and catches murderers.
