Sequel to Solitude - ABR Listeners Choice: Best Sci-Fi of 2018

Following the incredible events of Solitude, Vaughn and Angela must probe the depths of space and time to unravel and perhaps even reverse the enigma of humanity's disappearance. But first, they must get past themselves. If you enjoyed Solitude, you'll love the action and plot twists in this apocalyptic epic.

Vaughn had visions of plying the seven seas with Angela at his side. Then she and fate crapped all over his plans. Bent on discovering the truth about what happened to humanity and the rest of the world's life, Angela drags a less than willing Vaughn across the Mediterranean and into central Europe. However, even the overhead presence of a line of levitating steel structures and ships couldn't prepare them for what lied ahead. The size and scale of what they find in Geneva rocks them to their cores.

Angela and Vaughn fall into the center of a world-consuming machine. While struggling to survive, they wander through a looping chain of utterly alien lands. When they finally deduce the true nature of their situation, Angela discovers a potential way out, not just for her and Vaughn but all of Earth's life.

Angela can bring back the whole of the human race!

But only if she and Vaughn can survive the journey home.

I can’t believe it,
When this audiobook came out a couple of days ago I when and got it right away.
Then in two days I listened to both audiobooks sure that it’s the complete series.
How wrong ! Now I got to wait who knows how long for the next audiobook to get released. I’m pissed of but I can’t say that this is a joy of a series so it’s going to be worth waiting !

Both audiobooks are great, easy to understand it all and full of enjoyment.

Perfect narration by R.C. Bray and Julia Whelan .
And for the author Dean M. Cole, keep it on with the same brain and imagination.

Fully recommend this audiobook to all !!!!!

NO! the first book was sooo amazing, and this one.... ugh. The plot went exactly where it didn't need to go. I am thoroughly disappointed. Perhaps it's a set up for the 3rd book, but I'm so done with the story that I'm not sure I want to read it.

Few books in the science fiction genre can truly be classified as unique...but along comes Dean M. Cole's much-anticipated sequel to "Solitude." With "Multitude," Dean has solidly laid claim to that label. I had expected more surprises from the characters of Vaughn and Angela. I had anticipated an action-packed story. I had hoped for an exploration into the cause of the catastrophe that wiped out life on earth.

I had not been prepared to be shoved, kicking and screaming, into new dimensions.
Including Hell.

Dean takes the reader on an existential roller-coaster ride unlike anything I've encountered before. There is no way to determine what is coming next or how (or if) Angela and Vaughn will overcome what they encounter.

There are not enough hyperbolic adjectives to sprinkle on this review and I can't give more details without providing spoilers. It is the best book I've read in years. It is entertaining. It is well-and vividly written. It will expand your thinking.

It is ... unputdownable.

It’s very difficult to write a review for a Dean M. Cole book. What Dean does with his writing is nearly impossible to describe without giving away spoilers. When an author is so talented that he can weave a story, taking you to a place you actually believe: you cannot help but be grateful to them for that gift. When that author can pitch you into an alternate reality and then bring you back to this time and place: you cannot help but appreciate their brilliant mind. When an author does all that with charm, and laughter and a genuine sense that he loves building the story for his writer: you have found an author who needs to write, rather than one who wants to write. I said about Solitude; the first book in this series, “This is the best journey I have been on since ‘The Stand’.” I stand by that statement with the addition of Multitude. I am eagerly awaiting Amplitude with baited breath.

Holy smokes!! Where do you even begin with this one. What a great and ingenious story. It is smart, wild and weird but it fits so nicely. What a continuation of the series and I cannot wait to see where the series goes next. I love both of our characters even with their worst flaws. The journey they are on is one for the ages and I cannot wait to follow more. My favourite thing about this book was the descriptions of all the landscapes and worlds that this author has created it is just fabulous. Such a good story. The technology gets better and better as you read on in the story and you will laugh, get angry and be happy alongside our characters. You usually only get one or two Ah ha moments in a story but this entire ride is one giant Ah Ha moment. That does not even begin to explain the ending either. The performance is spot on and delightful. This is dominated by a male performer and has sprinkles of a female performer throughout and it fits awesome. Definitely scared me at first but as the story goes on it just keeps getting better and better. The two voices were perfect for this book. Do yourself a favour and start the series as fast as you possibly can.

OMG! Multitude was absolutely fantastic! If you haven't listened to Solitude yet, I highly recommend that you do. This picks up right where the story left off and explains what happened to the rest of humanity. Angela and Vaughn make their way to CERN to figure out what happened to all human and animal life on the planet. What they find is horrifying! In an attempt to stop a horrible invasion, they end up in an unending loop between parallel universe trying to find their way back home and put a stop to this! This is a story you have to pay close attention to or you'll get confused. Even the main characters are confused!

Excellent narration by R.C. Bray and Julia Whelan! Bray always does a phenomenal job and is one of my absolute favorite narrators! Whelan and Bray work so well together in this series!

I'd hate to see this series butchered, but I think this series would be great as a movie! Can't wait for book 3!

I've been waiting for the follow-up to Dean M. Cole's "Solitude" for, it seems, forever. Solitude was a great book, and it left just enough of a hint about things to come in Multitude, that I knew I needed to read it as soon as it came out. And I'm happy to say that the book did not disappoint. Without giving up plot details, I can say that Multitude is one of the most imaginative books I've read. An adventure that spans dimensions. It differs quite a bit from the first book, in that the two protagonists are together for the entire story. My only complaint is that at times you get frustrated with the mail protagonist's bull-headedness and impatience, but that eventually gets lost amid a story that is as expanisve and colorful as this one. Great work, Mr. Cole, I'm now looking forward to the next one!

I had the opportunity to read an advanced copy of Multitude, and read it I did. Well, that's probably not exactly right, it's more like I devoured this wonderful banquet with no hesitation. Dean's writing is concise, well thought out, and quick paced. I became a sci-fi and fantasy fan after reading The Wizard of Oz at age 7, in 1950 and have been hooked ever since. One of the things that's hard to find these days, is original story lines and plots that contain direction, movement and interest. In Solitude and now Multitude, Dean has introduced a very different yet totally entertaining story line. Not only did he show great imagination in creating this, but it gives your own imagination lots of room to roam around pondering things. No specifics here, but this is a delighful read full of action and surprises, right up to the last paragraph of the book!! You will not be disappointed!!

2 1/2 stars Ok I’ve written a review twice now. See my updates for more information. Trying again.
Stretching to give this a 3. The first part was very disjointed and repetitive. MFC repeated said no,no,no. The word wan used over and over, few times ok, but find an alternative word once in a while. Bad language was unacceptable, seemed to improve a bit as it progressed. I almost gave up at 20-25% mark. It did improve about that mark, plot got better. I didn’t realize that this was a part 2, but feel like I didn’t miss much.
I probably will not go back to find book 1 or 3. Trying to find in chirp history if I paid for this per if it was free

I liked Solitude. It was a solid dumb bit of adventure fiction which was far fetched but was confined in its rescue each other, survive the crisis way. Multitude opens up a multiverse, time travel and some solidly toxic masculinity in the place of character development. There is very little sense of the emotional toll of the death of the entire planet on the leads, as the snark at each other between adventures which don't eventually resolve and never really clarifies or identifies the rules of its man worlds theory universe. And so... binned

I thought Solitude was filled with nonstop action, but it doesn’t hold a candle to Multitude. Following Angela and Vaughn as they attempt to find the source of the apocalypse is like riding a rollercoaster in total darkness – you have no idea what comes next, is it a drop, a curve, or the lead up to something even worse. I was hooked from the first page to the last of this action-packed adventure in the post-apocalyptic world where Angela and Vaughn find themselves. I received an advance review copy and chose to provide this review.

WOW! Another great read and a great addition to the series. One of the best writers I have ever had the pleasure of following. It picks up right where Solitude left off. Once I started reading I could not put it down. It was so good that I accidentally pulled an almost all nighter reading it. The plot, the characters and web that Dean wove was just amazing. Can’t wait for Amplitude!

Excellent sequel, Dean's writing is going from strength to strenght

I have been eagerly awaiting the sequel to the excellent solitude. The direction the story takes is quite spectacular, the story arc takes off like the proverbial rocket in a direction I did not see coming. The science is solid, the prose is witty and well constructed and delivers an almighty sucker punch to the gut at one point. Dean has really knocked this one out of the park, cannot wait for part 3.

Outstanding continuation of Solitude!

I initially shyed away from this series due to some reviews (those bastards), but after reading Sector 64 (and loving it). I needed to try some more Dean M. Cole books!

I'm very happy that I took the plunge into Solitude and Multitude. I've been immersed in the series for the last week and couldn't put it down. I mainly listened to the audio books (outstanding performances!!!) But read some as well, switching back and forth.

I can't wait to read/listen the next one! Kill those damn bastard necks!

This book tried far too hard to be clever and as a result, the story became convoluted and the characters became nothing more than vehicles to drive the plot.

The first book was straight forward and better for it. Humanity is wiped out in a disaster (albeit a relatively complicated disaster) and the two survivors need to work together to rescue one of them who is stranded in space. This simplicity created enough room for the scientific concepts to unfold without tripping up the story. This book failed to follow this format.

There's just too much going on, too many new concepts that don't quite make sense, and too many coincidences to keep me engaged. It didn't ever feel like the protagonists were driving the story, but more like it was happening to them and they were just there to describe what was happening to the reader.

Speaking of those characters, they were both unlikable in this book. They completely lack chemistry to the point where it seems like they hate each other at times. I never bought that they were in a relationship or that they had strong feelings for each other. This lack of emotion made it harder to care when they were in danger.

Finally, this book commits what in my mind is a storytelling sin; it introduces time travel. Only one author has ever made time travel work in my opinion, and Terry Pratchett only managed that because he created an order of magical monks who's purpose is to correct paradoxes. Even then, had that story not been a satirical take on time travel as a concept, it never would have worked. I get that it's a fascinating concept, but it always introduces paradoxes that break the internal logic of a story. The same is true here, and that's a shame because the first book felt like it was going for a similar hard science feel that The Martian achieved.

In short, I lost my attachment to the characters, the story became convoluted, and time travel ruins every story it appears in. So it's 2-stars on this book, and I'm going to part ways with this series here.

3.75 - 4.0 ⭐

I listened / read this book. The ebook was a KU.

In this sequel Vaughn and Angela follow a trail of metal floating on the sky to CERN. They need to find out why all life has disappeared and who is responsible. What they find shocks them. Their efforts to stop those responsible pushes them into a time loop, traveling to alien and decimated dimensions. They also discover the gruesome truth of where all the people and animals went. Now more than ever they have to stop the enemy.

I liked the book although it had that never ending action that I don't enjoy. It's exhausting when the characters move from one live threatening situation to another. It's a book, not a 2 hour action movie. I wish there would have been a bit of down time for the characters as well as more thoughtful consideration and planning to overcome their enemy. More than half the book Vaughn and Angela were just reacting to their situation.

Julia Whelan and R.C. Bray were excellent narrators. I hope their dual narration continues in the next book.

I picked this up immediately after reading Solitude, the first book in the series. After the adventure of getting a person off the ISS with no conceivable way of doing it plus the science of the large hadron collider, I was expecting more.

This descended quickly into defeat-the-aliens territory. Even with the added bonus of dimensional travel, I found myself saying to the book "it's different dimensions, not time travel!" When you find yourself yelling at an audiobook, something's wrong. This has a great ending and I'm interested in the third book when it does come out on audio. RC Bray and Julia Whelan are amazing. But I'm not sure I'll love it like I did the first book. As soon as you add in aliens, things tend to want to go downhill. Especially when they're all arms and virtually no heads. The romance? Yes. The dimensional travel and causality and science? Yes. Being chased by "taters?" Not so much.

Still an interesting story, but holy crap does the author either think the reader is REEEEALLY stupid or he wanted Vaughn to appear to be the dumbest pilot in history. There are things that take a few seconds to figure out and we get to spend half the book waiting for him to catch on.

This also serves to make Angela look like an ass.
V: "What are you thinking?"
A: "I don't want to say yet"
V: "What is it?"
A: "I don't want to say"
This goes on for hours when the explanation of what she was thinking (which we figured out a lifetime ago) would've taken 10 seconds.

Groundhogs and Aliens!

Any book like Solitude that leaves you with just two human beings alive on the planet watching a stream of buildings, vehicles and tanks flying over their heads is unlikely to have a follow-up that's all plain sailing! And so it proves here! Solitude had a unique perspective of two characters separated by space itself working together, it was a great premise and worked extremely well. Now that Angela and Vaughn are together it's a different chemistry and feel to the book. They set off determined to work out what went wrong for humanity and there are no surprises that they got a lot more than they bargained for.

If you thought that they were lucky and succeeded more by blind luck and ignorance in the first one then as they loop through inter-dimensional space you'll wonder at it once again as the plot and action veer off into a cartoon or video-game like space from fairly early on. But this isn't intended to be gritty, hard sci-fi by any stretch and if you park your reality scooter for your listening sessions and go with it you'll have a ball with this. If you're after something like Adrian Tchaikovsky or Arthur C Clarke then look elsewhere.

Part of the reason this works so well is the narration of course. It goes without saying that RC Bray gives a great performance and he is more than ably joined by Julie Whelan who's no slouch behind the microphone. In the first one they worked brilliantly in the first part of the book alternating with the characters separated but it wasn't so good when the two eventually came together. In this one they found a great formula with RC Bray doing the narrative and Vaughn's voice with his usual excellent high-tension delivery and Whelan doing Andrea's voice and some sundry other parts. Probably harder to put together but extremely effective so bravo whoever made that decision.

Eventually, this one brings it's own story to a conclusion and gives us a spoiler excerpt from the third book, Amplitude. For reasons I won't elaborate on that one looks set to once again shake things up in terms of the chemistry but I suspect we can expect more crazy action, pseudoscience and Laura Croft-like antics from the characters. And why not?

Solitude and Multitude are the first two novels in the Dimension Space Series by Dean M.Cole. Both are approximately 9-10 hours of listening, narrated by R.C.Bray and Julia Whelen, published by Candtor Press and Blue Heron Audio.

Plot: A wave of light emanates from CERN supercollider in Geneva, Switzerland and sweeps across the globe, annihilating all life forms. "Poof," no one is left. Animals, bird, bugs, all gone. Planes fall from the sky, trains ram into stations, boats plow into shore, cars, buses, trucks all without drivers, crash. The people are all gone.

Two survive. A lone astronaut, Commander Angela Brown, is stranded on a space station. An aviator, Vaughn Singleton, has survived in an earthbound experiment within the protections of a chamber. Initially, neither is aware of the other.

Months pass. On the space station, Angela makes a family of lab mice that live in her hair. Depressed, completely alone, Vaughn wanders the earth, intent on committing suicide. He absently glances through an old newspaper and discovers an article about an upcoming space launch. A light bulb glows over his head - there may be someone else alive, up there.

And so begins this apocalyptic SciFi series. What happened? Who did it, how, and why? An experiment at CERN gone horribly wrong? An alien invasion of earth? The future of mankind is a stake!

Liked: Story. It's intriguing, thought-provoking detail on the science of CERN. Narration by R.C.Bray as Vaughn Singleton and Julia Whelen as Angela Brown. Smooth transitions, well produced. No explicit sex scenes, no offensive language inappropriate to the scene. Feel free to give the books to anyone as gifts.

Not so hot: Although the books loosely conclude, there are cliffhangers — sequels to come.

If you're a SciFi fan or merely willing to stretch the imagination and get lost in an apocalyptic story, these will do.

Okay, this was not as fast paced as the first novel, but it was dealing with a multitude (no pun intended) of different adversaries.

Love the banter and communication that takes place between Commander Angela Brown and Captain Vaughn Singleston. It all seems very natural...for two very smart people (in their fields of interest), but also under the gun and pressure that the two of them are under in this story.

It isn't as tight as the first one, which naturally it couldn't have been, and it suffered a little bit in the pacing aspect, but just a little.

The frenetic pace that these two go on...was impressive and daunting.

Love how the author uses body weight and other aspects to show how badly they have been rushing through to places they've been in (no spoilers).

The ending is great, again...and I am jumping into the third book straight away.

Really loving this series. So thankful that I found it.

This story excels in every possible multiverse!

I have been waiting for this sequel for nearly two years. To say that it was worth the wait is an understatement.

I listened to the audiobook version of this story and it was performed so well. Bob and Julia both did a fantastic job. I loved the new duet narration style used in the sequel compared to the dual style used in Solitude.

I can't go into as much detail with my review as I would like without giving out spoilers. So, let me just sum it up with Dean is a great researcher and tackled a concept that has always fascinated me in the physics realm. I have always been drawn to stories about CERN and the LHC, and Mr. Cole's work definitely piqued my interest.

On a side note, I have never related more to a character than I did with Angela and her experiences with modern cinema in relation to her educational goals. That hit me right in the feels.

This cliffhanger has me really anxious to get to Amplitude. I am hoping that it comes to fruition quickly as I want to dive right in at the soonest possible opportunity.

Another easy 5/5 from Mr. Cole.

Slower pace than book 1, but still well written

These books have been edited well in that there are minimal distracting errors in the writing. The adventures of Vaughn and Brown continue, albeit in a rather repetitious way, as they fight to end the looping reality in which they are caught. The story loses momentum after the second journey to hell, but the author wisely condenses time to get the characters to a place where change can occur. Vaughn continues to take a back seat to Brown’s brilliance, but I hope he can have a few hero moments in book three. He’s definitely a supportive guy who keeps on going no matter how bad it gets. The basic human need for companionship and consoling drives their relationship, but their innate value to restore and protect life compels the reader to stay alongside them on their arduous journey.

The description of alien-ish worlds is sufficient to convey the different realities, but even more contrast in mundane details would have added greater originality to the story.

Overall, this is a good story, but the first book is more intense and filled with more science-tech elements.
