With only their wits to aid them, Whip and Cosum of the Hostrum and Hayes stagecoach line are elected to carry a Union army doctor and much-needed medical supplies to the besieged Fort Thunder. The country is alive not only with aggressive Apaches but also bands of hard-pressed and starving Confederate soldiers in desperate flight after their recent losses during the battle at Glorieta Pass. A hazardous journey confronts the two stagecoach men, but if disease and war aren’t enough to contend with, there’s also a puzzling series of bizarre and mysterious murders that are baffling the trapped survivors inside the forlorn fortress.
The two protagonists of the Stageline series--Whip (the driver) and Cosum (the man who rides shotgun) are asked to transport and army doctor and medical supplies to a remote fort where the soldiers are being struck down by illness. That the fort is also surrounded by Apaches and the desert they have to cross is infested with desperate Confederate soldiers makes the trip particularly dangerous.
The best of the series so far, with several amazing battle scenes, a great set of supporting characters (the deaths of several of whom carry real emotional impact), a mini-murder mystery, and a sad but appropriate epilogue about how often battles, death, bravery and tragedy are simply lost to history, with no one remembering a generation later.
