THE BIG RED DEVIL: --ALL HALLOWS' EVE EDITION--

Rate this book
John Harker has suffered terrible things. And one dreadful night, as a result of his ghastly injuries, he falls into coma. After five years, in October of 1977, he wakes. But when he does so, it is no happy or splendorous occasion. Instead, defying medicinal science and logic, like the undead walking again, he simply rises and leaves in the middle of a moonless night. Clark Bandosky, a member of the hospital’s Neurology unit, sees the security footage and becomes instantly obsessed. He seeks out John Harker across several states, stricken in every story he hears from those who have witnessed John Harker’s horrible eyes. The dark and gray and horrible eyes.

“THE BIG RED DEVIL” was John Huber’s debut novel. To date, it is his most violent and brutal work. And it has been entirely rewritten, word for word, front to back in this ultimate –All Hallows’ Eve— edition. Revised, reimagined, and expanded with nearly a hundred graphic inserts, both digital photography and illustrations to highlight and enlighten the experience.
And that story is something to behold. This novel has become completely conscious, intelligent and precise. It is relentlessly dark and entirely balletic. This book is a powerful, harrowing and shattering descent into Hell. The visceral and terrible hell we make of ourselves. Full of beasts, possession, murder, gore and violence, this novel is horror itself. And with near flawless execution, it is horror art. The special space between beauty and brutality that culminates in the epic “HALLOWEEN SERMON” that is sure to be an instant classic, and entirely legendary.

This isn’t just horror. It is a violent, emotional and tragic nightmare. Epic and visceral, John Huber is entirely obsessed with depravity. And he tells his phantasmic tale in grand conjuration.

. . . And the reader is sure to be haunted by its echo.

"He is the Devil, and he does not know defeat. He lives inside the very heart of every man. He rises again and again, turning man against man, until man is no more. The Devil is real. I will always know that. His existence is not insistent upon your belief. The Devil is real, I promise. I have seen his work. "

I will preface this by say the author sent me this book as a friend. I doubt he expected a review from me because of this, but I do know he expects any review from me to be completely honest, and that, I can give him.

I've read two books by John Huber: Grave Walker and now The Big Red Devil. I almost wonder if I should have given Gravewalker 4 stars because I have now seen exactly what John Huber is capable of when you allow his mind to tell his fingers what to do.

This isn't to say Gravewalker is a 4 star book. I gave it 5 because of how well written and unique it was, but it nearly pales in comparison to this book. This book is Huber's way of flaunting and pushing his literary abilities. I was captivated very early on. I didn't want to put this book down and I didn't want it to end.

However, I will say that the people I recommend this book to will be limited. Huber uses the human language until it submits to him. This isn't a cheap read that you come for the thrills alone. You think. You may even need a dictionary. This is written so beautiful and with such a visceral force that you have to devote your full attention to it. I think, for most people, they won't like that. They are fools because it is truly an experience. With the imagery, both written and physical, it is beautiful.

It's also disturbing. Some horror thinks it's disturbing for blood, guts, gore, and what have you, but this takes it all to the next level. You'll cringe. You'll ache. You may throw up. It's a great book, but it's not for the faint of heart.

I love this book. I think the author of this book is amazing, both in talent and as a human being. If you're willing to try something new, don't mind the extremes, and can use your brain, I definitely recommend trying this book out.

The Devil Is Real

I don’t often get the chance to read my own work. After doing so, I can only hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed creating it. Because this one, despite how relentlessly dark and violent it becomes, is fun. Fun in the horrific way and terrible way you’re ashamed to admit.

And it is also my hope that you are as haunted by this story as I am. Because this story will refuse to stay dead. And one of the readers who contacted me personally put this notion best...

‘This isn’t a horror story. It’s beyond that. It’s a tragic, emotional and torturous nightmare.’

So, just like LAVENDER BLUE, be careful with this one. While LAVENDER may have teeth... this one does not know death. It does not rest and it does not sleep. Be wary of how far you let it inside your head.
